The older brother of Paul Pogba, former Manchester United midfielder, has been sentenced to a three year jail term, two years suspended, after being convicted of attempting to extort the French footballer.
Mathias Pogba, who was also fined €20,000 (£16,500), will avoid time behind bars and instead serve one year wearing an electronic bracelet.
Five other men were found guilty of extortion and other crimes, and received sentences between four and eight years in a Paris court on Thursday.
Paul Pogba, 31, said he had been “tricked by childhood friends” who held him at gunpoint in 2022 and demanded €13m (£10.8m). He said he paid them €100,000 (£82,600).
Mathias Pogba’s lawyer Mbeko Tabula told RMC Sport the sentencing was “extremely harsh” and said “I think we will appeal”.
The other five defendants were handed the following sentences: Roushdane K received eight years, Boubacar C four years, two suspended, Adama C five years, Mamadou M five years, 12 months suspended, and Machikour K four years, three suspended.
Last year, Paul Pogba told Al Jazeera that he had considered retiring from football because of the extortion attempt.
“When there is money you have to be careful,” he said. “Money changes people. It can break up a family. It can create a war”.
Former professional footballer Mathias Pogba played for clubs including Partick Thistle, Wrexham, Crewe Alexandra and Crawley Town. His last club was Belfort in France, leaving them in 2022.
Swedish prosecutors on Thursday dropped a rape investigation that was launched in connection with soccer star Kylian Mbappé’s visit to Stockholm in October.
In a statement, lead investigator Marina Chirakova said there was not enough evidence to continue the investigation, which centered on an incident at a hotel.
“During the course of the investigation, there has been a designated person suspected on reasonable grounds of rape and two cases of sexual assault, but my assessment is that the evidence is not sufficient to proceed and the investigation is therefore closed,” Chirakova said. “The designated person has not been notified of suspicion of a crime.”
Prosecutors never publicly named the suspect in the investigation, but many Swedish media reported it was Real Madrid striker Mbappé, who visited Stockholm in October during a break in the Spanish league.
At the time Mbappé’s legal team dismissed those reports as false.
Mbappe’s lawyer Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard and the player’s representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comments on Thursday.
In an interview that aired Sunday on French TV station Canal Plus, Mbappé said he was “surprised” by the reports that he was the subject of a rape investigation and he had not been contacted by Swedish authorities.
“These are things that come into your life like that, you can’t see them coming,” Mbappé told Canal Plus. “It’s just incomprehension. I don’t think it weighed on me in the sense that I have never considered myself involved.”
The 25-year-old soccer star appeared in Stockholm on Oct. 10 during an international break instead of playing for France in the Nations League. Just days later Swedish media reported he was the subject of a rape investigation.
At the time Swedish prosecutors confirmed that a rape investigation began but declined to comment further.
Kenya’s ambition to host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) alongside Uganda and Tanzania is teetering on the brink of failure due to severe delays in stadium preparations. Despite the initial jubilation when Kenya was awarded co-hosting rights, the reality of the country’s infrastructure readiness paints a grim picture.
Unfinished Stadiums and Missed Deadlines
With just over three weeks until the Confederation of African Football (CAF)’s deadline on December 31, 2024, Kenya’s primary venues, Nyayo Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, are far from ready. Nyayo Stadium, although closer to completion, still requires significant work on lighting, grass, and painting. Kasarani Stadium, closed for renovations since December 2023, has not seen the expected progress, with key elements like the playing surface, dressing rooms, and media centers still under construction.
Financial and Logistical Challenges
The budget set for these renovations is approximately Sh3 billion, a substantial sum yet seemingly inadequate given the scope of work needed. The financial strain is exacerbated by the history of mismanagement and the unending renovations, turning these venues into what some critics describe as “cash cows” without substantial progress.
Historical Precedents and Current Realities
Kenya’s track record in hosting international football events is not encouraging. The country lost the rights to host the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations due to unpreparedness and was stripped of the 2018 CHAN hosting rights for similar reasons. This pattern appears to be repeating, with recent social media buzz suggesting that Rwanda might be stepping in, although official confirmations from CAF have denied such claims.
Comparative Readiness of Co-Hosts
In stark contrast, Uganda and Tanzania have stadiums that meet CAF standards, with both countries having successfully qualified for upcoming tournaments due to their infrastructural investments. This readiness disparity highlights Kenya’s lag in preparation, underscoring the challenges of hosting international sports events without adequate facilities.
Government’s Last-Ditch Efforts
Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, along with CAF representatives, have tried to assure the public of Kenya’s commitment to hosting CHAN. However, the practicality of completing such extensive work in such a short timeframe is questionable. Even with promises of expedited construction and oversight by a newly formed Local Organising Committee (LOC), the physical evidence suggests otherwise.
Expert Opinions and Public Distrust
Former Kenyan international Boniface Ambani has been vocal about the improbability of Kenya hosting CHAN, emphasizing that a proper playing surface alone requires at least six months to prepare. His skepticism is shared by many, fostering a public sentiment of distrust towards the government’s optimistic claims.
The Bigger Picture
While Kenya’s government focuses on salvaging the situation for CHAN, the broader implications for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) are dire. The ongoing issues could lead to a repeat scenario unless drastic, immediate action is taken. The lack of ready facilities has already impacted Harambee Stars, forcing them to play home matches abroad, which has affected their performance and morale.
Kenya’s inability to host CHAN 2024 isn’t just about missing a deadline; it’s a reflection of deeper systemic issues in sports infrastructure management and planning. Without significant, immediate interventions, Kenya risks not only losing CHAN but also facing ongoing challenges in hosting any major international sporting events. The situation calls for transparency, accountability, and perhaps, a realistic reassessment of what Kenya can deliver in the near future.

Authorities raided Adidas AG headquarters in Germany as part of a years-long tax investigation, a spokesperson from the company said on Tuesday.
Adidas said in a statement it has been in contact with customs authorities for several years about the matter and is providing them with documents and information.
The raid was first reported by Germany’s Manager Magazine.
The investigation covers the period from October 2019 to August 2024 and is related to compliance with customs and tax regulations regarding the import of products into Germany, the company said, adding it was cooperating with authorities.
The company said it continues to work closely with customs authorities to clarify questions that have also arisen due to different interpretations of German and European law.
“The company does not expect a significant financial impact in connection with the investigation,” Adidas said in a statement.
Just like Hussein Mohammed and his running mate Mcdonald Mariga’s campaign tagline, it’s officially a ‘Fresh Start’ for the Kenyan football.
This is after political tension of Football Kenya Federation (FKF) elections descended at Saturday’s elective Special General Meeting (SGM) at Kasarani Gymnasium.
Mohammed, an experienced football administrator, was second time lucky after he was finally elected the new FKF president hence ushering in a new dawn in the country’s most followed game.
Mohammed garnered 67 votes in the second round as delegates entrusted him with the mandate to restore Kenya’s lost glory.
A total number of 90 delegates drawn from 46 branches, 43 clubs and Kenya Footballers’ Association (KEFWA) representative converged at the historic venue to decide the future of the Kenyan game which has been bedeviled by wrangles, mismanagement, embezzlement of funds and lack of standardised stadiums for a while.
Mohammed succeeds Nick Mwendwa whose bid to remain at Kandanda House failed after Doris Petra finished second with 31 votes, nine votes behind Mohammed before she eventually conceded defeat ahead of the runoff. She went ahead to get one vote in the second round same as former FKF CEO Barry Otieno.
Newly elected Central National Executive Committee member Robert Macharia termed Mohammed’s as a huge relief to Kenyan football.
“It’s an overwhelming feeling. It is always not easy to get incumbent out of office because they have all powers. We didn’t have same level of playing ground but we made it. We are happy to have taken the leadership of the game. Things are bad, but we will make them better,” said Macharia, who’s also Murang’a SEAL chairman.
Barry Otieno collected 10 votes, Kakamega Homeboyz chairman and owner Cleophas Shimanyula (4), Sammy Owino (2) and Tom Alila (1). Sam Ochola and Chris Amimo got zero.
To legalise the process despite Petra’s verbal withdrawal, FKF Electoral Board chairman Hesbon Owilla called for a run off for the first three candidates after the winner failed to garner 50+1 votes.
Having seen his presidential ambitions dealt a blow in 2011, the Extreme Sports CEO has brilliantly made a comeback with his camp garnering seven National Executive Committee members seats as he aims to restore the federation’s reputational damage. Charles Njoka (Eastern), Caleb Amwayi (Western), Mohamed Dabar (North Eastern), Robert Macharia (Central), Collins Opiyo (Nyanza), Peter Kamau (Lower Rift) and Dan Shikanda (Nairobi) newly elected NEC members were all allied to Team Fresh Start. Gabriel Mghendi retained his Coast NEC member seat, Bernard Lagat clinched the Upper Rift Valley post, while Violet Kerubo Momanyi won the Women’s Representative NEC member seat.
Despite seven of his NEC members being elected, Mohammed had to achieve his dreams the hard way through the run off.
However, the game changer ahead of the second round came when Barry Otieno publicly declined advances from Petra on the floor to join Mohammed’s camp alongside Cleophas Shimanyula and KEFWA president James Situma. Sensing danger Petra concede defeat ahead of the second round.
The tension was evident from onset with the exercise which was initially expected to start at 9am delayed for over two hours with some of candidates rumoured to be forming coalitions. There was a beehive of activities on most candidates’ camps on the eve of the eagerly anticipated exercise with candidates lobbying for votes.
But when the exercise eventually kicked off, chaos suddenly erupted during the verification of the crucial voting materials as some candidates were accused of illegally continuing with campaigns and bribing delegates within the elections hall premises forcing the election officials to temporarily stop it. Prior to this, two camps of supporters almost got into a physical alteration at the arena’s main entrance as tension intensified.
It was almost the same situation outside the hall as police engaged supporters of different candidates in running battles and lobbed teargas to disperse the crowd that had gathered at the Kasarani Stadium main gate.
However, like the real boss of the day, FKF Electoral Board chairman Hesbon Owilla quickly intervened, and contained the situation in the arena. He read a riot act to the delegates who had sneaked out of the hall, warning to block them from participating in the elections.
Once normalcy was restored after security reinforcement, the exercise went on smoothly until the entire NEC was elected.
A woman who accused Conor McGregor of raping her has won her claim against him for damages in a civil case.
A jury found that the Irish mixed martial arts fighter assaulted Nikita Hand in a Dublin hotel in December 2018.
He has been ordered to pay her more than €248,000 (£206,000) in damages.
The jury at the High Court in Dublin had been deliberating since Thursday afternoon before returning its verdict that McGregor did assault Ms Hand.
The woman had also taken a case against another man, James Lawrence, 35, of Rafter’s Road, Drimnagh in Dublin.
She alleged that Mr Lawrence assaulted her by having sex with her without her consent in the Beacon Hotel.
The jury found that he did not assault her.
Speaking outside the court on Friday afternoon, Ms Hand said she was “overwhelmed and touched” by the support she had received.
“I want to show [my daughter] Freya and every other young girl and boy that you can stand up for yourself if something happens to you, no matter who the person is, and that justice will be served.”
Offering a message to “all the victims of sexual assault”, she said her story was “a reminder that no matter how afraid you might be to speak up, you have a voice”.
Both men had denied the claims by the 35-year-old hair colourist and said they separately had consensual sex with Ms Hand at the hotel almost six years ago.
Before being sent out to consider their verdicts yesterday afternoon, the judge Mr Justice Alex Owens reminded the jury that the onus of proof was on the plaintiff.
He also explained that the standard of proof was on the balance of probabilities – more probable than not.

Manchester United great Alex Ferguson will step down from his lucrative role as club ambassador at the end of the season, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Tuesday.
The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the move has not been publicly announced.
Ferguson will be 83 in December and the person said the ending of his ambassadorship — which had been worth millions of dollars — was “amicable” and he would “always be welcome at Old Trafford.”
Ferguson, a regular at matches since he stepped down in 2013, will remain a non-executive director of the football club board.
It comes as part of a wider cost-cutting exercise at United under INEOS, which has had responsibility for football operations at the club since its founder Jim Ratcliffe completed the purchase of a minority stake earlier this year.
Last month United posted losses of £113.2 million ($148 million) for the year ending June 30, 2024 — their fifth straight year of losses.
But the club said they are compliant with the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules.
Top Sports ministry officials were yesterday summoned to explain how Sh1.057 billion was spent on consultancies related to African Cup of Nations (Afcon) stadiums.
Another Sh352 million was spent on regional consultancy services.
The ministry officials, led by Sports Principal Secretary Peter Tum, and others from Sports Kenya, the Sports Fund, and the Academy of Sports are accused of paying private consultants in total disregard of President William Ruto’s directive.
A high-profile source at State House revealed that the officials were questioned shortly after 2pm.
Extravagant spending
In the spotlight over the spending are members of the Sports Fund board, which is responsible for approving projects to be undertaken and payments for them.
The board comprises Tum, Harry K Kimtai (Health PS), Belio Kipsang (Educa-tion), Chris Kiptoo (National Treasury) and Jack Tuwei (Sports Fund chairman).
Besides the consultancies, the officials spent Sh700 million on construction work at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani and Sh 167.35 million on the Kenya Sports Academy in Nairobi.
The ministry had allocated Sh1.533 billion for building 30 stadiums in constituencies across the country in the 2023/2024 financial year.
But it is the extravagant spending on shadowy consultants that has raised questions and sparked public anger, with demands for accountability.
“The consultancies were a skunk and flew in the face of a directive by President William Ruto. The officials have many questions to answer,” said another source at the Sports ministry who sought anonymity for fear of reprisals.
“The PS and other key actors were summoned to explain circumstances under which well-connected individuals were given millions in consultancy services yet there is nothing to show for it. Heads might roll at the Sports ministry. The Sports Fund has become a gravy train.”
The officials will be asked to explain when the consultancy services were advertised, provide evaluation reports, award letters for successful bidders, contract specifications, the source of the money, and the identities of the consultants.
There are also questions regarding any links between the consultancy firms and ministry officials, specifically PS Tum, Sports Kenya CEO Pius Metto, and Sports Fund CEO Nuh Ibrahim.
There’s has been a vicious fight to merge Sports Kenya and the Kenya Academy of Sports under the management of Metto.
The ministry officials defied a presidential directive not to engage the services of private consultants for Afcon 2027.
It is also said that senior ministry officials took advantage of the lacuna created by President Ruto’s decision on July 1 to dismiss all Cabinet secretaries to reach questionable deals that have now left Kenya’s quest to co-host the continent’s top flight football tournament on shaky ground.
Contract termination
Before he left the Sports ministry following the dissolution of the Cabinet, the then Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, in a letter dated June 26, 2024, directed all departmental heads in the ministry and semi-autonomous government agencies under his docket to “immediately terminate the services of consultants for Afcon”.
The letter, with the heading, “cancellation of all consultant contracts and stan-dardisation of infrastructure project costs”, indicated that the government was “losing millions of shillings through the uncoordinated scheme”.
Tum said the ministry had hired consultants from the University of Nairobi.
But he assured a parliamentary committee that the ministry was reviewing the consultants’ contracts to assess their value.
“The ministry has terminated (the] contracts of some of the consultants firms in the new arrangements,” he said.
Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich obliterated the women’s marathon world record in Chicago on Sunday, lopping nearly two minutes off the previous best to win in an unofficial time of two hours, nine minutes and 57 seconds.
Chepngetich got off to a blazing start and left the rest of the competition behind her by the halfway mark and went on to claim her third title in Chicago and break Ethiopian Tigst Assefa’s previous record of 2:11:53, set last year in Berlin.
Brazilian authorities on Friday began closing down more than 2,000 betting sites, including those that sponsors popular football team Corinthians and other first division clubs, as part of a push to regulate online gambling.
Latin America’s biggest economy is struggling with what Finance Minister Fernando Haddad has called a betting “pandemic,” prompting the government to tighten the screws on the sector.
Since 2018, when Brazil legalized sports betting sites, online gambling has operated in a regulatory free-for-all, subject to virtually no rules or taxes.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s government has called time on sites that failed to sign up to new regulations due to take effect in January.
The new rules seek to combat fraud and money laundering and protect users, by for example banning minors from betting.
“Anyone who is not regularized, or in the process of being regularized, is being taken off the air,” Haddad said in a statement.
The finance ministry said it had identified 2,040 “suspicious domains” which it had asked the telecoms regulatory agency Anatel to block.
On the blacklist is Esportes da Sorte, which sponsors Corinthians, one of Brazil’s most popular football clubs, as well as Athletico Paranaense, Bahia and Gremio de Porto Alegre.
The ministry said the betting sites would be blocked and banned from advertising, “which includes, for example, sponsoring football clubs.”
More than 200 other sites will be allowed to continue to operate after agreeing to the new rules.
Brazil’s central bank estimates that 24 million out of Brazil’s 212 million inhabitants, roughly one in nine people, gamble online.
Lula warned recently that betting was causing many low-income Brazilians to get into debt.

Victor Osimhen’s refusal to transfer to Chelsea has sent shockwaves through the football world, highlighting the complexities of player negotiations in today’s market.
The Nigerian striker turned down a reported salary offer of €4 million per season—less than half of his current wages at Napoli.
Frustrated by what he deemed an insulting proposal and disappointed by Napoli’s failure to finalize a lucrative deal with Al-Ahli, Osimhen now faces an uncertain future, potentially sidelined at Napoli unless a club in the Saudi Pro League makes a late offer before the transfer deadline.
Chelsea’s salary offer angered Victor Osimhen
Sky Sport Italia reports that Victor Osimhen turned down a transfer to Chelsea. They offered him €4 million in annual wages, plus another €4 million in bonuses.
Now, he faces being sidelined at Napoli unless the Saudi Pro League makes another offer.
The striker expected a significant offer in the final hours of the transfer window. Napoli negotiated with two different clubs but failed to reach an agreement.
Details are emerging about why the talks with Chelsea fell apart so dramatically this evening.
Chelsea deal reduced Osimhen’s wages by half
Gianluca Di Marzio reports on Sky Sport Italia that Chelsea offered Victor Osimhen only €4 million per season, which is less than half of his current €10 million salary. They also included €4 million in performance-related bonuses.
Of those bonuses, €2 million depended on Chelsea qualifying for the Champions League, and the other €2 million was tied to his goals and appearances for the club.
Osimhen, Nigeria’s top footballer, found this offer insulting. He refused it, especially since Chelsea barely qualified for the Conference League last season, making the Champions League seem unlikely.
Italian sources have stated for weeks that Osimhen would not accept a pay cut from the €10 million he agreed to with Napoli in December 2023.
He is also angry with Napoli for failing to finalize a fee with Al-Ahli, where he would have earned €40 million per season with a release clause. Napoli wanted an additional €5 million in add-ons on top of the €80 million offer.
Now, Osimhen faces a difficult situation. He has nowhere to go, and Napoli does not want him. He will train separately from the squad.
His only hope is that a club in the Saudi Pro League will make an offer before their transfer deadline on September 2.
The Future of Africa’s Top Player at Napoli
Osimhen ended up staying at Napoli on transfer deadline day, even though he may not play for the club again.
Sky Sport Italia reported a complicated situation involving an agreement with Al-Ahli and a transfer fee that Chelsea had agreed upon with Napoli.
However, Al-Ahli did not finalize their fee, and Osimhen was unhappy with the personal terms Chelsea offered.
His agent recently indicated that Osimhen preferred to stay in Europe instead of moving to Saudi Arabia.
Without acceptable options to remain in Europe, it seemed the player was ready to go to the Middle East until talks between the clubs fell apart.
What Next for Victor Osimhen?
Osimhen’s relationship with Napoli is now “completely broken,” and his career has unexpectedly hit a wall. A move to another European club is not possible until January.
This means he may have to rely on quick interest from another club in Saudi Arabia, where the transfer window remains open until September 2.

Victor Osimhen has had a meteoric rise to stardom, showcasing his exceptional talent and goal-scoring ability. Here are some of his career highlights:

Three-time Olympic gold medalist Faith Kipyegon has opened up about her interaction with Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay following the controversial 5000m final, which nearly cost Kipyegon her silver medal.
Tsegay, known for her aggressive tactics on the track, pushed Kipyegon early in the 5000m final. In response, Kipyegon appeared to push back, leading to a tense moment that overshadowed the race, which was ultimately won by Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet, with Kipyegon finishing second.
Kipyegon revealed that Tsegay later begged for forgiveness for her actions, which had sparked outrage among athletics fans worldwide, particularly in Kenya, where many were furious about the incident.
After returning to Kenya from the Paris Olympics, Kipyegon shared that the incident was traumatic and emotionally draining, admitting that it affected her mentally during the race.
Speaking on Citizen TV, the world champion expressed her shock at being disqualified, as she believed she had done nothing wrong. Many assumed her tears after the race were due to disappointment over not winning gold, but Kipyegon clarified that it was the disqualification that upset her most.
“I didn’t think I would be disqualified after finishing my race. Most people think I was disappointed by getting a silver medal, but I wasn’t. I was disappointed by the disqualification because I didn’t know what I had done,” she explained.
Following a successful appeal by the Team Kenya technical officers, Kipyegon’s medal was reinstated. The next morning, Tsegay approached Kipyegon before the 1500m heats to apologize.
“The following day, when we ran the 1500m heats, she came and knelt before me, apologizing. She told me, ‘It was not you, it was me… please forgive me.’ So, I just forgave her. This is sports, and we will meet again tomorrow—we need each other. You can’t compete alone; you need someone to push you. So, I forgave Tsegay, and we became friends. This is sports; we have to be content with each other and keep breaking records while pushing each other to the limit,” Kipyegon added.
The Kenyan athletes have returned home as Africa’s Olympic champions and are currently being honored by President William Ruto at a stately reception at State House, Eldoret.
