Kenya’s Goalkeeper Matasi Seeks Financial Help

The national team Harambee Stars goalkeeper Patrick Matasi is appealing for financial assistance from friends and well wishers over medical bill resulting from surgeries of close family members following a road accident they suffered on June 4.

Two weeks ago,Matasi who plays for St. George in Ethiopia, his wife, son, a cousin and brother-in-law enroute to Nairobi from Kakamega cheated death when the car they were travelling in rolled at least three times after a tyre burst.

The former Posta Rangers goalkeeper was treated in Lessos before being transferred to Kakamega, where he and his family are recovering.

The goalkeeper was released a day after the accident, but his wife and son required additional medical attention, and it is because of their mounting bills that he has come forward to seek monetary support.

The 33-year-old custodian has been a constant figure in the national team in recent games until October last year when the former AFC Leopards goalkeeper was dropped from the squad that faced Comoros in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Former Stars tactician Francis Kimanzi revealed his worries over the physical shape of then first-choice goalkeeper, Matasi after omitting him from the team that played against Mozambique in an international friendly in Nairobi in October 2019 saying this decision was influenced by Matasi’s dip in form.

Matasi made his debut for the national team in 2017 and has so far featured in 27 games for Harambee Stars, including the Cecafa finals when Kenya lifted the trophy under Paul Put.

  • Are The FKF Right To Skip The June International Football Window

Are The FKF Right To Skip The June International Football Window

While many countries around the world will be engaged in several international friendly matches in June, the Harambee Stars of Kenya will be inactive during the FIFA international window.

According to Football Kenya Federation (FKF) CEO, Barry Otieno, Kenya’s no-show is not an accident. It was a deliberately planned move to give the federation a chance to complete its domestic competitions.

“We will not have any matches lined up for the national team Harambee Stars this international break simply because we have a very tight schedule ahead of us in terms of the top-flight tier and also the domestic cup”, Otieno said ahead of the FIFA window.

The Kenyan Premier League was temporarily halted in March after the government imposed a lockdown in the country, but the league restarted in May, with about half of the season yet to be played.

The FKF’s concerns and logic are understandable, but has it been at the detriment of the Harambee Stars?

The FIFA window in June was initially supposed to mark the start of the next phase of World Cup qualifying in Africa, but the Confederation of African Football, CAF, was forced to readjust its schedule due the lockdown and lack of readiness in several countries.

According to the new CAF timetable, the six group matches will be crammed into September and November, with the final play-offs coming up in March.

Given that there is no other FIFA window between June and September, the June window presented a great opportunity for African countries to have one final get-together before the intense qualifiers begin in September.

However, Kenya has opted to pass up this opportunity.

When the World Cup qualifiers begin later in the year, the Harambee Stars will be battling in Group E, alongside Mali, Rwanda and Uganda. The group winners will proceed to the final round of the qualifying series in March.

Mali are the bookmakers’ favourites to win this group, but all four teams will feel they are in with a shot at moving on to the final round of qualifying.

The prospect of qualifying for a first ever FIFA World Cup should be enough motivation for Kenya, but if the Harambee Stars are in need of something else to fire them up, it is the chance to claim regional bragging rights, with East African rivals, Uganda and Rwanda both in the group.

A lot of Kenyan fans are quietly optimistic, to the extent that many will be putting their money on the Harambee Stars on betting sites in Kenya.

Coach Jacob Mulee’s men have managed to avoid big guns like Senegal, Algeria and Egypt, and will fancy their chances against their group opponents.

Kenya will be encouraged with the way they finished the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in March, picking up four points from their final two matches. They played out a 1-1 home draw against Egypt before rounding off their campaign with a fine 2-1 victory in Mali.

Unfortunately, their quest for AFCON qualification had been damaged much earlier following a stuttering start which saw them register just three points from their first four matches.

Kenya’s strong end to the campaign was only good enough for a third-placed finish, with Egypt and Comoros Islands qualifying for the AFCON in Cameroon.

The FKF have got to make sure that they get the preparations right so that the Harambee Stars make a much better start to their World Cup qualifying bid.

Hopefully, their decision to skip the June international window will not come back to hunt them.

  • Tennis Star Naomi Osaka Quits French Open

Tennis Star Naomi Osaka Quits French Open

Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open on Monday and wrote on Twitter that she would be taking a break from competition, a dramatic turn of events for a four-time Grand Slam champion who said she has “suffered long bouts of depression.”

Osaka’s agent, Stuart Duguid, confirmed in an email to The Associated Press that the world’s No. 2-ranked tennis player was pulling out before her second-round match at the clay-court tournament in Paris.

The stunning move came a day after Osaka, a 23-year-old born in Japan and now based in the U.S., was fined $15,000 for skipping the postmatch news conference after her first-round victory at the French Open. She also was threatened by all four Grand Slam tournaments with possible additional punishment, including disqualification or suspension, if she continued with her intention — which Osaka revealed last week on Twitter— to not “do any press during Roland Garros.”

She framed the matter as a mental health issue, saying that it can create self-doubt to have to answer questions after a loss.

“First and foremost we are sorry and sad for Naomi Osaka. The outcome of Naomi withdrawing from Roland Garros is unfortunate,” French tennis federation president Gilles Moretton said Monday. “We wish her the best and the quickest possible recovery. And we look forward to having Naomi in our tournament next year.”

Moretton said the four major tournaments, and the professional tennis tours, “remain very committed to all athletes’ well-being and to continually improving every aspect of players’ experience in our tournament, including with the media, like we always have.”

In Monday’s post, Osaka spoke about dealing with depression since the 2018 U.S. Open, which she won by beating Serena Williams in a final filled with controversy.

“I would never trivialize mental health or use the term lightly,” Osaka wrote.

She also said speaking with the media makes her anxious.

“I think now the best thing for the tournament, the other players and my well-being is that I withdraw so that everyone can get back to focusing on the tennis going on in Paris,” Osaka wrote. “I never wanted to be a distraction and I accept that my timing was not ideal and my message could have been clearer.”

She continued: “Anyone that knows me knows I’m introverted, and anyone that has seen me at the tournaments will notice that I’m often wearing headphones as that helps dull my social anxiety. … I am not a natural public speaker and get huge waves of anxiety before I speak to the world’s media.”

Osaka has never been past the third round on the French Open’s red clay. It takes seven victories to win a Grand Slam title, which she has done four times at hard-court tournaments: the U.S. Open in 2018 and 2020; the Australian Open in 2019 and this February.

“Here in Paris I was already feeling vulnerable and anxious so I thought it was better to exercise self-care and skip the press conferences,” she wrote.

Tennis players are required to attend news conferences if requested to do so. The maximum fine of $20,000 is not a big deal to Osaka, the world’s highest-earning female athlete thanks to endorsement contracts totaling tens of millions of dollars.

Other players, notably 13-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal and No. 1-ranked Ash Barty, have said they respect Osaka’s right to take a stance but explained that they consider speaking to reporters part of the job.

After Osaka’s post Monday, several athletes in tennis and other sports tweeted their support.

Martina Navratilova, an 18-time Grand Slam champion, wrote: “I am so sad about Naomi Osaka. I truly hope she will be ok. As athletes we are taught to take care of our body, and perhaps the mental & emotional aspect gets short shrift. This is about more than doing or not doing a press conference. Good luck Naomi- we are all pulling for you!”

Two-time NBA MVP Stephen Curry wrote that it was “impressive taking the high road when the powers that be dont protect their own. major respect.”

The tragic incident occurred in Ramba village, Mfangano North Location of Suba North Constituency in Homa Bay.

The pupil identified as Mavin Ochieng Okuku, from Ramba Primary School reportedly hanged himself using a trouser inside his bedroom, Saturday night, after the parents refused to let him watch the final match between Chelsea and Man City.

According to Chief of Mfangano North Location, Bernard Oloo, the boy requested to go and watch the finals at Ramba Trading Center on Saturday night but the parents declined the request and ordered him to go and sleep.

  • Chelsea Beat Manchester City 1-0 To Win UEFA Champions League

Chelsea Beat Manchester City 1-0 To Win UEFA Champions League

Chelsea have won the Champions League title for the second time after beating Manchester City in a thrilling final in Porto.

Kai Havertz scored the decisive goal just before half-time, running on to Mason Mount’s excellent ball before knocking it past Ederson and then rolling into the empty net.

City, who were looking to win the competition for the first time, never really showed the imposing dominance that had brought them the 2020-21 Premier League title, with Pep Guardiola’s bold team selection having failed to come off.

The former Barcelona boss had left Fernandinho and Rodri on the bench as he named an attacking line-up but they struggled to take control of midfield in their absence.

They did have a good chance to score before Havertz’s goal but Antonio Rudiger made an excellent block to deny Phil Foden.

Riyad Mahrez flashed a shot just wide in the final seconds but it was not to be for City as Chelsea held firm to claim the trophy.

The victory banished memories of their FA Cup final disappointment earlier this month and seals their first piece of silverware under Tuchel, who replaced Frank Lampard back in January

Gerard Moreno gave the Spanish side a 1-0 lead over Manchester United in the 29th minute at the Gdansk Stadium in Gdansk, Poland.

In the second half, Edinson Cavani scored the equalizer for the English club in the 55th minute and the match went to extra time.

Both sides then failed to score, and Villarreal defeated Manchester United 11-10 in a thrilling penalty shootout.

After 21 straight penalties were scored, Geronimo Rulli saved Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea’s penalty to give Villarreal their first cup in UEFA competitions.

Villarreal’s Spanish manager Unai Emery sealed his fourth Europa League title as he previously won this cup with Sevilla in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

  • CS Amina rolls out new sporting guidelines

CS Amina rolls out new sporting guidelines

Cabinet Secretary for Sports Amina Mohamed has unveiled a raft of measures that will guide the resumption of sporting activities in the country but spectators will still be kept off the sporting events.

The CS also announced that Kenya will send its first delegation of athletes to Kurume City in Fukuoka on July 5 for a pre-camp ahead of the Olympic Games scheduled to begin on July 23 in Tokyo, Japan.

This year’s Olympic will see participating teams accommodated at designated Bubble training camps in strict adherence to the guidelines of the Japan’s Ministry of Health and the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games playbook.

“Testing of Athletes shall be done every 96 hours until the commencement of the Olympic Games to ensure that Kenyan athletes are safe and exposed to the rigors of Covid-19 control expected in Tokyo,” the statement reads.

CS Amina’s announcement comes two weeks after President Uhuru Kenyatta directed the Ministries of Sports and Health to develop a road map to resumption of sports as he lifted the suspension on all sports activities and cessation within five counties including Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Kajiado and Machakos.

Nick Kithuku Mwendwa, President, Football Kenya Federation [p/courtesy]
“I thank my colleague in the Ministry of Health, Hon. Mutahi Kagwe for the support in revising and approving these guidelines and call upon all stakeholders to comply with them. “Together, we can fight the pandemic and maintain a low case load to guarantee continued play,” said CS Amina.

The announcement will see FKF Premier League will become the first top-flight football competition to resume action in Kenya when Kariobangi Sharks face off with Kakamega Homeboyz in Nairobi on Friday.

The league was halted on March 26 after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the indefinite suspension of all sporting activities citing a spike infections weeks before the Easter celebrations.

FKF has been struggling to have the league resume but the Ministry of Health stuck on the decision that plunged the Kenyan league into uncertainty on whether it will be played to the end or it will be cancelled like the 2019-20 season.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Rape Accuser Is Demanding Sh6B In Damages For ‘Past Pain, Future Pain And Suffering’

Newly released courts documents have revealed that a former model, Kathryn Mayorga is seeking $56 million (about Ksh6 billion) in damages from football star, Christian Ronaldo after accusing him of sexually assaulting her in a Las Vegas hotel room in 2009.

She wants £18m for “past pain and suffering”, £18m for “future pain and suffering” and £18m in punitive damages.

The 37-year-old’s expenses rack up to £1.4m with legal fees of £1.1m giving a total of £56.5m – equal to two years of the Juventus star’s salary.

Ronaldo, 36, vigorously denies Mayorga’s claims, the UK Mirror reports.

In 2010 she accepted $375,000 (£270,000) as part of an out-of-court non-disclosure settlement.

But three years ago, Mayorga filed a civil lawsuit in Las Vegas saying she had been “mentally incapacitated” when she agreed to it and signed it under duress.

Her legal team has filed a list of more than 60 witnesses they want to testify

They include British former Big Brother star Jasmine Lennard, 35, who claims she dated the former Manchester United ace 10 years ago.

Also on the list are three police officers who investigated the original complaint, Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli, Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes and adviser Andy Quinn.

Ronaldo has said: “I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me.

“Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in.”

Arsenal Not For Sale, Owner Kroenke Insists

Stan Kroenke will not entertain any offers for Arsenal, his Kroenke Sports and Entertainment (KSE) group said on Tuesday, amid growing supporter unrest at the American billionaire’s ownership of the club.

Thousands of Gunners fans protested outside the Emirates Stadium ahead of Friday’s 1-0 defeat to Everton after they were one of 12 clubs to initially sign up to proposals for a breakaway European Super League (ESL).

Arsenal, along with five other English clubs, withdrew from the plans within 48 hours due to the backlash from supporters, players, governing bodies and the British government.

On Friday, Spotify founder Daniel Ek said he was considering a takeover bid and reports this week suggested former Arsenal players Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp would be part of an advisory group for the Swedish billionaire.

“In recent days we have noted media speculation regarding a potential takeover bid for Arsenal Football Club,” KSE said in a statement.

“We have not received any offer and we will not entertain any offer.

“Our ambition for Arsenal remains to compete to win the biggest trophies in the game and our focus remains on improving our competitiveness on the pitch to achieve this.”

On the field, Arsenal sit 10th in the Premier League and are on course for their worst league finish since 1995.

DCI Rounds On International Racket Developing Fake Doping Reports Of Kenya Athletes

Forgery suspect believed to be part of an international conspiracy ring, out to tarnish Kenya’s image in the athletics world, was Monday morning arraigned before Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Court.

Elias Kiptum is accused of developing false doping allegations against Kenyan athletes.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Kiptum’s arrest and subsequent arraignment followed investigations by the DCI Anti-Nacortics Unit detectives, who since September 2020 were pursuing a criminal syndicate which has been working with foreign journalists in fabricating information on doping in Athletics Kenya.

“The perpetrators had prepared documents purporting that doping was being promoted and encouraged by several state agencies in the country, with the aim of having Kenya suspended from participating in the forthcoming Olympics in Japan.” Said DCI

DCI says that forged documents purportedly signed by officials from the Anti-Dopping Agency of Kenya (ADAK) and Athletics Kenya (AK) were shared with the Europe-based journalists, who have been part of the ring.

“In a thorough operation by DCI sleuths on April 18, a raid conducted at Kiptum’s residence in Iten, within Elgeyo Marakwet County saw the confiscation of several documents bearing ADAK and AK letter heads, alongside suspicious bank slips.” Added DCI

Contract agreement documents between local suspects and the foreign journalists, three laptops, mobile phones among other electronic gadgets were also confiscated from the suspect’s house and are undergoing forensic analysis at DCI Headquarters.

Appearing before the JKIA court, Kiptum denied all 12 charges leveled against him and remains in custody pending bail ruling which has been scheduled for Tuesday April 27.

  • Why Mourinho gamble emphatically failed at Tottenham

Why Mourinho gamble emphatically failed at Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspurs Manager José Mourinho was shockingly sacked on Monday, just six days to their Carabao Cup final clash with Manchester City at Wembley stadium.

Mourinho was sacked seventeen months after he was appointed by the London based club to transform it from ‘nice’ players into aggressive attackers winning titles. That plan has emphatically failed.

In fact the Spurs are headed to finish outside of the top four for the second straight season. Mourinho’s style has been criticized for the negativity of their football and uncertainty about the future of many key players.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy made the unpopular decision to kick out Maurio Pochettino in November 2019 and replaced him with Mourinho to transform the club’s historical style into a more ruthless one under Mourinho but failed.

Now Levy has to find a ‘Mr Fix It’ to appease Spurs supporters who are already rebelling following the two fruitless campaigns under the Portuguese tactician.

In fact the decision to hire Mourinho  was a big risk for both club and the tactician whose reputation had suffered a blow following a fruitless stint at Manchester United.

Mourinho is known for succeeding in big clubs with high spending power which Spurs are lacking. Even Gareth Bale’s summer arrival did not convince the world that the club owners had stumped up cash to spend in the transfer market to achieve Mourinho’s goals.

Bale, a hero who returned to his former club was benched most of first half of the season as the coach preferred Harry Kane and Son’s counter-attack style which delivered remarkable results at the beginning of the season.

Mourinho leaves the club with his future simmering in uncertainty after dismal performance at United which he managed before joining Tottenham. Most of the cub’s hardcore fans who were swept up in hype about Mourinho’s arrival at White Hart Lane were not really shocked with the sack.

His ugly stint continued with recent defeats to Chelsea, Wolves, and a FA Cup exit at home to Norwich.

Tottenham has already made Red Bull Leipzig manager Julian Nagelsmann their preferred candidate to replace Mourinho.

  • Why José Mourinho Was Sacked By Tottenham

Why José Mourinho Was Sacked By Tottenham

AGENCIES | The Athletic – English Premier league side, Tottenham Hotspur have sacked Jose Mourinho as manager.

Sports Magazine/website, The Athletic reports that Spurs have decided to dispense with Mourinho after just over a season and a half in charge.

Tottenham are in seventh in the Premier League and at risk of missing out on a place in the top four.

How has Mourinho performed at Tottenham?
Mourinho was brought in to take Tottenham to the next level, to do what Mauricio Pochettino could not do and win Tottenham a trophy.

But Spurs finished sixth in the league last year and are now seventh, with almost no chance of Champions League qualification for next season.

They are out of the Europa League and only have a Carabao Cup final on Sunday against Manchester City as a chance to win a trophy. They are further away from the elite than they were under Pochettino.

Why have they decided to get rid of the manager?

Tottenham saw Mourinho as their way to get back into the Champions League but now that is impossible, he was on borrowed time.

The club were also unhappy with Mourinho’s constant criticism of the players in public, and very conscious of how the fans had turned on Mourinho.

They knew that if the fans came back to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium they would make their feelings on Mourinho very clear. That scenario has now been avoided.

    How have Spurs played recently?

After their bright start to the season, which saw the north London club top the league in November, Spurs have struggled to find any sort of consistency this season.

Their form has nosedived particularly of late, with only one league win in their last five games. The run has included defeats against rivals Arsenal and Manchester United.

Spurs also crashed out of the Europa League round of 16 last month, following a humiliating 3-0 loss in the second leg at Dinamo Zagreb.

What will his legacy at Spurs be?

Mourinho provided some stability after the departure of Pochettino in November 2019 and did at least secure Europa League football for this season.

But his legacy has been to make no real progress while also creating friction between the players and fans, that will need to be fixed by the new manager.

  • Naomi Osaka Beat Serena Williams Ending Her Bid For A 24th Tennis Grand Slam At Australian Open

Naomi Osaka Beat Serena Williams Ending Her Bid For A 24th Tennis Grand Slam At Australian Open

The Japanese third seed swept past the American veteran 6-3, 6-4 on Rod Laver Arena in front of thousands of fans allowed back in after Melbourne lifted a snap five-day lockdown.

She will face either American Jennifer Brady or Czech Karolina Muchova on Saturday for a fourth Slam title after her success at Flushing Meadows in 2018 and last year, and Melbourne in 2019.

The victory left Williams, who won her last major in Melbourne in 2017, stranded on 23 Grand Slam titles as she strives to match Margaret Court’s all-time record.

Since winning while pregnant in Australia four years ago, Williams has lost four Slam finals, including one to Osaka in a controversial and heated 2018 US Open decider which left both women in tears.

“I hit a lot of unforced errors in the first few games, I was just really nervous and scared,” said Osaka, who reeled off five games in a row in the opening set after going 2-0 down.

“But then I sort of eased my way into it and the biggest thing for me was having fun.”

“For me, it’s always an honour to play her and I didn’t want to go out (of the tournament) really bad, so I just tried my best,” she added.

    Big-match experience

While Osaka held a 2-1 head-to-head advantage going into the blockbuster clash, 39-year-old Williams had a huge edge on big-match experience.

Ahead of the showdown, she had won all eight of her previous semi-finals at Melbourne Park stretching back 18 years to when she beat Kim Clijsters on her way to her first title in Australia.

Her first ever Grand Slam semi, against Lindsay Davenport at 1999 US Open, was played when Osaka was just one.

But the 23-year-old boasted a 100 percent win record in Slams when she got past the fourth round, and she kept it intact Thursday.

Williams worked hard on her fitness during the off-season and quickly asserted herself, breaking Osaka straight away with the Japanese sensation having issues with the sun and ball toss.

She consolidated by holding serve, with Osaka guilty of five unforced errors in the opening two games.

Osaka said before the match she still felt intimidated seeing Williams on the other side of the net, but her early nerves soon settled.

She saved a break point in the next game and got off the mark with an ace, then broke back to level the scores at 2-2 when Williams sent a forehand long.

Now well and truly in her groove, with her forehand doing most of the damage, Osaka won five games in a row, and the set, to leave Williams stunned.

She broke again on Williams’s opening serve of the second set, with the American screaming: “Make a shot, make a shot!”

With the crowd roaring her on, Williams stayed in touch and Osaka’s eighth double fault gave her the American a break back.

But it was a short-lived reprieve with Osaka breaking again and calmly serving out for victory.
