Verstappen fell back from the Ferrari after a few laps into the clutches of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, who passed the world champion with five laps to go.
McLaren’s Lando Norris managed to salvage a point after a difficult race by passing Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin with two laps to go.
Hamilton’s victory was a resounding recovery after a disappointing Ferrari debut at the opening race of the season in Australia last weekend, in which he qualified eighth and finished 10th.
He was praised on the slowing-down lap after his victory by his engineer Riccardo Adami for a “masterclass in tyre management” on a day when every other driver struggled to make their rubber last.

Hamilton savoured the cheers from the packed grandstands after climbing out of his car on the pit straight at the end.
“I woke up feeling great today,” he said. “The first race was difficult and I really do feel a lot of people underestimated the steep climb it is to get into a new team, with communication and understanding and a whole lot of things.
“The amount of people I heard yapping away maybe because they haven’t done it and don’t have the experience.
“I came here and the engineers and mechanics have done a great job of fine-tuning the car and it felt great today. There is so much grip on this new tarmac but I think everyone struggled.”
Verstappen appeared as if he could challenge Hamilton in the early stages but the 40-year-old began to edge away after about eight laps as the Dutchman slipped back into the clutches of Piastri.
The Australian bided his time for a few laps, inching closer to the back of the Red Bull, before pulling off a clinical pass into Turn 14 on lap 14.
Piastri said: “It was a really productive sprint. Finishing second is always a great result and I learnt a lot. As much as the result, the way I got the result was the encouraging thing.
“We didn’t quite have the pace for Lewis out front but we have some ideas and see if we can go better.”
Verstappen said: “I tried to give it a go but unfortunately, the last eight laps we just didn’t have the pace of the others, so I was just truing to survive out there, so I definitely take the P3. It was tough to manage the tyres.
“In general we just lack a bit of overall pace so you have to push a bit harder and that kills you tyres more.”
Norris, winner in Melbourne, dropped back from sixth on the grid to ninth on the first lap with an error at Turn Six, running wide after apparently misjudging his braking behind Russell and losing three places.
Norris spent most of the race complaining he had no grip from his front tyres and could not go any faster, but pounced as Stroll himself ran into trouble in the closing stages.
The result means Norris’ championship lead has been cut to two points by Verstappen.
Norris said: “I went in a bit hot (into Turn Six). On me. I struggled after that. I didn’t have any pace. I struggle a lot in these conditions, with the front graining. It’s my worst nightmare.”
Behind Verstappen, Mercedes’ George Russell passed Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc for fourth place with a dive down the inside of the hairpin at the end of the long back straight on the first lap.
Leclerc came back at Russell in the closing stages but the Briton was able to hold him off.
Yuki Tsunoda took an excellent sixth for Racing Bulls, fending off Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes for the entire race.
Former Formula One team owner Eddie Jordan has died at the age of 76 following a battle with an “aggressive form of prostate cancer,” his family announced on Thursday.
The Irishman disclosed in December that he had been diagnosed with bladder and prostate cancer, which had spread to his spine and pelvis.
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Eddie Jordan OBE, the ex-Formula 1 team owner, TV pundit and entrepreneur,” his family said in a statement.
“He passed away peacefully with family by his side in Cape Town in the early hours of 20th March 2025 at the age of 76, after battling with an aggressive form of prostate cancer for the past 12 months.”
President William Ruto on Thursday flagged off the 2025 WRC Safari Rally, reaffirming Kenya’s commitment to hosting the prestigious motorsport event and challenging the private sector to take a leading role in its future sustainability.
Speaking during the flag-off ceremony held outside Nairobi’s City Hall on Thursday, Ruto described the Safari Rally as the best rallying leg in the world, praising its role in cementing Kenya’s place on the global sports tourism map.
“I have it on the authority of WRC and FIA reports that the Safari Rally is one of the most eagerly anticipated events worldwide, while the Hell’s Gate power stage is among the most watched globally,” he said.
The President lauded the 72nd edition of the Safari Rally as a proud part of Kenya’s sporting heritage and a key driver of sports tourism since 1953, noting that it remains the only FIA World Rally Championship leg in Africa.
Ruto reaffirmed the government’s support for the event but emphasized the need for increased private-sector involvement.
“The future of Safari Rally depends on private sector participation. I am looking forward to the day this will cost zero for the Government of Kenya,” he remarked, highlighting efforts to reduce public spending on the rally from Sh2.1 billion in 2023 to Sh980 million this year.
The President further announced government backing for the FIA’s Affordable Cross Car project, aimed at nurturing motorsport talent among young Kenyans.
He urged local federations to work with the Technical and Vocational Training Authority (TVETA) to enable local manufacturing of affordable rally vehicles using FIA-provided blueprints.
Further, Ruto welcomed the FIA Helmet Wearing Programme, an initiative rolled out by the Automobile Association of Kenya to boost road safety for boda boda riders. This, he said, aligns with the country’s 2024-2028 National Road Safety Plan.
The President commended multiple government agencies, county governments, and corporate sponsors for adopting a whole-of-government approach to deliver the 2025 Safari Rally.
He singled out the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports for leading the collaboration across ministries and the private sector.
The Head of State further revealed that talks have begun between the WRC Safari Rally and Toyota Gazoo Racing to train local drivers and mechanics, underlining his administration’s focus on developing Kenya’s motorsport ecosystem.
“To our local drivers led by the 21-year-old Dinashe Gatimu, the entire country is rallying behind you,” he said.
The flag-off event was steeped in nostalgia, with Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja paying tribute to the rally’s rich history.
“In 1963, the South Africa Safari Rally was flagged off right here, outside this same building,” Sakaja noted, recalling the legendary “Unsinkable Seven” who completed the grueling rally.
Sakaja also used the occasion to call for the event to be rooted firmly in Nairobi’s heritage.
“We hope that we will continue to have the flag-off right here because of that history and legacy that has been set,” he said.
“As a government and in partnership with corporates, we must build and support our local talent so that more Kenyans can make their mark globally,” Sakaja urged.

World Rally Championship (WRC) drivers have launched a boycott of stage-end interviews in English at this week’s Safari Rally Kenya, protesting new FIA language guidelines.
The action follows a €10,000 fine imposed on Adrien Fourmaux for using profanity during a stage-end interview after the power stage in Sweden.
In response to the FIA’s stricter rules, all Rally1 drivers and co-drivers, along with some WRC2 participants, formed the World Rally Drivers’ Alliance (WoRDA).
In a statement released on February 24, WoRDA requested a meeting with FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, arguing that the “severity of sanctions for minor, isolated, and unintentional language lapses” is excessive given the adrenaline-fueled context of stage-end interviews.
No discussions with the FIA have occurred since.
The protest began during Wednesday’s shakedown stage at Safari Rally Kenya, the first event since WoRDA’s formation.
Elfyn Evans (Welsh) and Thierry Neuville (French) responded in their native languages, while others, including Fourmaux, remained silent.
Drivers plan to maintain this approach throughout the weekend.
Double world champion Kalle Rovanperä was the first to address the stance, saying, “Unfortunately, you won’t hear much from me this weekend, but if this is what it takes to make a difference, we’ll do it.”
Fellow champion Ott Tänak echoed the sentiment: “Adrenaline runs high at stage-end, and given recent actions, we can’t comment until it’s comfortable for drivers again. Hopefully, a solution comes soon.”

We regret the impact on fans, who we know support us, but this step is necessary for our sport.”
