New KRU Boss Harriet Okach Vows Refreshing Leadership To Bring Back Kenya’s Rugby Glory

Historic appointment sees first female chairperson take charge amid administrative turmoil

    By Sports Correspondent

Kenya Rugby Union has entered a new era with the historic appointment of Harriet Achieng Okach as its first female chairperson, replacing Alexander “Sasha” Mutai who resigned amid administrative chaos and looming no-confidence motions.

The appointment on June 5, 2025, marks a watershed moment for Kenyan rugby, with Okach inheriting a union plagued by internal wrangles, court cases, and governance issues that have overshadowed the sport’s development.

At over 40 and a mother, Okach brings a unique perspective to what has traditionally been viewed as a “gentleman’s game.”

Her path to rugby’s top job is unconventional – she has never played the sport professionally, yet her leadership credentials and business acumen earned her the board’s confidence.

“People think that, as I am a woman, I am not supposed to be at the helm, but people will be surprised by what I can achieve,” Okach said confidently in a recent media interview.

“I have built individual relations with everyone on the board, KRU secretariat and the clubs, which is what made it easier for my appointment.”

Okach’s leadership journey began in the rough-and-tumble world of Kenyan politics, where she served as finance and campaign manager for former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero in 2013.

Fresh from the United Kingdom with a degree in international relations and mental health from Oxford Brookes University, she admits to being a “softie” when she first entered local politics.

“It was baptism by fire, but I managed to swim from the deep end,” she reflected.

“Politics taught me to be impartial and a good listener so that you are able to make wise decisions. That has helped me in rugby, especially in the board games, where there were so many accusations flying around.”

Her rugby journey began through the late Fidel Odinga, former Kisumu Rugby Club chairman, who introduced her to the sport in 2013.

She served as treasurer at Kisumu RFC before joining the KRU board in March 2023, where she received the highest number of votes (22) among elected directors.

Taking over during turbulent times, Okach has identified unity as her primary mission.

The KRU board has been fractured by allegations of corruption, certificate forgeries, and conflicts of interest, with multiple court cases pending investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.

“I believe fellow board members saw that it would be much easier for me to unite the board,” she explained. “I can crack jokes, but be serious when it comes to delivery. I focus on doing what is right and what I believe in.”

    Her immediate priorities include:

    • Constitutional Reform: Adopting the new KRU constitution completed in November 2024, which redistributes power from the board to affiliate clubs
    • Sponsor Restoration: Building on her success as commercial director in bringing back key sponsors including SportPesa, Tusker, Kenya Airways, Crown Paints, and Safaricom M-Pesa
    • Media Coverage: Securing live mainstream media coverage for all leagues and national teams
    • Player Development: Ensuring Kenyan players reach the global stage permanently

    Restoring rugby’s lost glory

Okach’s long-term vision centers on returning Kenyan rugby to its former heights. She emphasizes that power should rest with affiliate clubs rather than the board, reflecting a more democratic approach to governance.

“My long-term plan is to give rugby its lost glory. Power should be with the affiliates, not the board,” she stated. “We need more sponsors in all our leagues and national teams. I want the main product that we have, the players, to get what they deserve: the global stage, permanently.”

Her commercial background has already proven valuable.

As commercial director, she helped restore confidence among sponsors who had previously withdrawn support, demonstrating her ability to rebuild damaged relationships.

The new chairperson faces significant challenges beyond internal politics.

Kenyan rugby has struggled with inconsistent performances, inadequate funding, and limited exposure compared to regional rivals.

The ongoing investigations into past governance issues also threaten to overshadow her reform agenda.

However, Okach appears undaunted by the criticism and commentary surrounding her appointment.

“Coming from public relations, no news is bad news, especially when you are at the helm,” she noted. “I have received ‘all the greetings’ from social media with humility and gratitude.”

What sets Okach apart is her acknowledgment of her limitations while leveraging her strengths.

“I won’t lie to anyone that I am technical. Everybody has their own strength, but when we work in unity, we shall achieve a lot,” she admitted.

This honest self-assessment, combined with her proven ability to unite diverse stakeholders, could be exactly what Kenyan rugby needs.

Her experience working with former Governor Kidero taught her to navigate complex political environments while maintaining focus on delivery.

As Okach settles into her new role, the rugby community watches with cautious optimism.

Her appointment represents more than just a gender milestone – it signals a potential shift toward more inclusive, accountable governance in Kenyan sports.

“We must be respectful and do what is right,” she emphasized. “If we truly love the game, let us silence the noise.”

The success of her chairmanship will ultimately be measured not by breaking gender barriers, but by her ability to deliver on promises of unity, transparency, and results.

With investigations ongoing and structural reforms needed, Okach’s leadership will be tested from day one.

For now, Kenyan rugby has a new voice at the helm – one that promises fresh perspectives, renewed focus on stakeholder engagement, and an unwavering commitment to restoring the sport’s glory days.

The rugby community awaits to see if this historic appointment will indeed mark the beginning of a new chapter for Kenyan rugby.

  • Inside KRU Rot: The Toxic Boardroom Politics That Forced Sasha Mutai’s Resignation

Inside KRU Rot: The Toxic Boardroom Politics That Forced Sasha Mutai’s Resignation

A web of corruption allegations, forged documents, and political vendetta brings down Kenya Rugby Union’s embattled chairman

The resignation of Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) Chairman Alexander ‘Sasha’ Mutai on Friday marked the dramatic climax of a toxic power struggle that has paralyzed Kenyan rugby for over two years.

In a tense Special General Meeting at the RFUEA Grounds, Mutai threw in the towel rather than face what appeared to be certain defeat in a looming no-confidence vote.

“Maybe I am not a good politician…maybe I don’t know how to cajole,” Mutai told the gathering, his voice heavy with resignation.

“I can read the mood in the room, and I can now follow a person whom I looked up to, Mwangi Muthee. I wish to tender my resignation as chairman.”

The reference to Muthee was telling.

The former KRU chairman had stepped down under similar circumstances in December 2014, citing boardroom wrangles and refusing to work with individuals he accused of corruption. History, it seemed, was repeating itself at Kenya rugby’s headquarters.

    The Sh13.2 Million Scandal

At the heart of Mutai’s downfall lay allegations of financial impropriety that had dogged his 27-month tenure.

He faced accusations of misappropriating Sh13.2 million through alleged illegal payments to vendors who failed to deliver services, charges that formed the backbone of the motion seeking his removal.

The allegations, championed by KRU Secretary General Ray Olendo, painted a picture of systematic financial mismanagement.

The money was allegedly paid to vendors who never delivered services, raising serious questions about KRU’s procurement processes and oversight mechanisms.

Mutai vehemently denied the charges, maintaining his innocence throughout the ordeal. “Thank you, Mr. Secretary, for making me a rich man. I’ll see you in court,” he said defiantly during Friday’s meeting.

“My name has been dragged through the mud.”

A House Built on Forged Documents

The corruption allegations were just the tip of the iceberg in what investigators describe as a systemic breakdown of governance at KRU.

Mutai’s camp alleged that the very board seeking to remove him was itself illegitimate, claiming that three members had been elected using forged Credit Reference Bureau (CRB) certificates.

The forgery scandal centered on Olendo himself, who had been suspended from the board on August 4, 2023, for allegedly presenting fraudulent documentation.

However, in a twist that epitomized KRU’s legal quagmire, the Sports Disputes Tribunal later ruled on March 5, 2024, that his suspension was illegal and declared it null and void.

Though he was initially suspended over the matter, he later won a legal battle at the Sports Disputes Tribunal, which ruled his suspension illegal, effectively allowing him to return and spearhead the campaign against Mutai.

    The Politics of Personal Vendetta

What emerged from months of court battles and public spats was a picture of KRU leadership consumed by personal vendettas rather than rugby development.

Mutai found himself at loggerheads not only with Olendo but also with Vice Chairman Moses Ndale, with the parties trading accusations and dragging each other to court over integrity issues.

In a typical boardroom tussle, members had placed Mutai at the centre of allegations relating to misappropriation of the board’s funds, while Mutai accused his detractors of orchestrating a smear campaign designed to destroy his reputation.

The personal nature of the conflict became evident when multiple rugby clubs filed separate motions against various board members.

Kisumu and Bungoma Rugby Clubs accused Mutai of lacking leadership and transparency, while Mwamba Rugby Club chairman Jason Braganza filed motions targeting Ndale, treasurer Joshua Aroni, and director John Kilonzo, all accused of overstaying their eight-year term limits.

    A Pattern of Failed Leadership

Friday’s resignation followed a familiar script that has plagued KRU for over a decade.

The union has become synonymous with leadership instability, with chairmen regularly falling victim to boardroom coups and corruption scandals.

Mutai’s reference to Muthee highlighted this troubling pattern of promising leaders being consumed by the very institution they sought to reform.

The irony was not lost on observers that Olendo, who led the charge against Mutai, had himself been at the center of forgery allegations.

Olendo faced allegations of presenting a forged Credit Reference Bureau document during the March 2023 elections, raising questions about the moral authority to lead anti-corruption crusades.

    Legal Battles and Court Interventions

Throughout his tenure, Mutai’s survival had depended on favorable court rulings.

He had successfully weathered two no-confidence motions at the March 24 Annual General Meeting after the Sports Disputes Tribunal intervened and halted the process, ordering arbitration instead.

When a faction of board members led by Ndale and Olendo attempted to remove him on March 6, Mutai again sought legal redress.

The Sports Disputes Tribunal barred the board from removing him until the case was heard, providing temporary reprieve.

However, Friday’s Special General Meeting proved to be different.

Reports indicate that members were due to present a vote of no confidence against him, prompting his resignation to avoid an undignified ouster.

Faced with what appeared to be insurmountable opposition, Mutai chose to leave on his own terms rather than face the humiliation of removal.

    The Cost to Kenyan Rugby

The prolonged leadership crisis has taken a heavy toll on Kenyan rugby.

While board members engaged in endless litigation and public spats, the sport struggled with funding challenges, poor international performances, and declining grassroots participation.

The Kenya Sevens team, once a powerhouse on the world circuit, has struggled to reclaim its former glory amid the administrative chaos.

Development programs have suffered as resources were diverted to legal battles, and the union’s credibility with sponsors and international partners has been severely damaged.

    What Lies Ahead

With Mutai’s resignation, KRU faces yet another transition period that could further destabilize the sport.

The union must now navigate the process of selecting new leadership while addressing the underlying governance issues that have plagued it for years.

The challenge will be finding leaders capable of rising above personal interests and political maneuvering to focus on rugby development.

The sport’s stakeholders are demanding comprehensive reforms to prevent a repeat of the toxic dynamics that have characterized recent years.

As Mutai prepares to follow through on his threat to take his accusers to court to clear his name, KRU must grapple with the reality that its problems run deeper than any single individual.

The rot, as many observers note, is systemic and will require more than cosmetic changes to address.

The resignation of Sasha Mutai may have closed one chapter in KRU’s troubled recent history, but the fundamental question remains, can Kenya’s rugby governing body finally break free from the cycle of corruption, cronyism, and conflict that has held the sport hostage for far too long?

For now, as the dust settles on Friday’s dramatic events, one thing is clear – Kenya rugby deserves better than the toxic politics that forced another promising leader to walk away from a job that should have been about developing the sport, not surviving boardroom warfare.

  • FIFA Boosts Kenya’s Cerebral Palsy Team with Equipment Donation

FIFA Boosts Kenya’s Cerebral Palsy Team with Equipment Donation

The Football International Federation Association (FIFA) has donated 35 footballs to the Cerebral Palsy Football Kenya Federation (CPFKF) as the team prepares for the upcoming Intercontinental Cup in Birmingham, UK, scheduled for August 15–24, 2025.

Speaking during the handover at Parklands Sports Club, FIFA’s Diversity and Anti-Discrimination Project Manager Terry Ouko emphasized the importance of inclusion in football.

“FIFA recently launched a Disability Toolkit to make football accessible to everyone. Our goal is to ensure persons with disabilities can enjoy and pursue football, whether recreationally or professionally,” Ouko said.

“I chose to begin this initiative at home with CPFKF.”

Ouko was joined by Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Administrative Manager Neddy Atieno and Rael Kamanda from the Kenya Footballers Welfare Association (KEFWA).

CPFKF President Lydia Iregi thanked FIFA for the donation, noting it will help the team intensify preparations for the Birmingham tournament, which also serves as a qualifier for the 2026 Cerebral Palsy Football World Cup in Spain.

“This tournament is key for international exposure and talent development. Many persons with cerebral palsy in Kenya haven’t had the chance to showcase their abilities. That’s what we’re working to change,” she said.

The national team, led by coach Willis Odhiambo, is expected to name its final squad for both men’s and women’s sides in mid-July as training intensifies with the new equipment.

  • Government Bans Celebrities, Influencers from Promoting Gambling Ads in Kenya

Government Bans Celebrities, Influencers from Promoting Gambling Ads in Kenya

New regulations end 30-day advertising suspension with strict guidelines targeting youth protection

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Kenyan government has implemented a comprehensive ban on celebrity and influencer endorsements of gambling activities as part of sweeping new regulations that came into effect following a month-long suspension of all gambling advertisements.

The Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) announced the permanent prohibition on celebrity and social media influencer gambling promotions as gambling advertisements resumed on May 30, 2025, after a 30-day suspension that began April 29.

BCLB Chairperson Jane Mwikali Makau declared that the new guidelines represent a fundamental shift in how gambling is marketed in Kenya, with protecting young people from gambling addiction as the primary focus.

“Operators are not allowed to use celebrities, social media influencers, or former winners to promote gambling,” Makau stated during the announcement of the new regulations.

“No gambling ad will be allowed unless it has been approved by the BCLB and classified by the KFCB.”

    Multi-Agency Enforcement Framework

The enforcement of these new rules will involve unprecedented coordination between multiple government agencies, including the Ministry of Interior, the Office of the Attorney General, the Communications Authority of Kenya, Kenya Revenue Authority, Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Kenya Film Classification Board, Media Council of Kenya, and the Financial Reporting Centre.

Under the new system, all gambling advertisements must undergo a two-stage approval process. First, they must be submitted to the BCLB for approval under the Betting Lotteries and Gaming Act, then forwarded to the Kenya Film Classification Board for content classification under the Films and Stage Plays Act.

    Strict Content and Placement Restrictions

The regulations introduce severe limitations on where and how gambling can be advertised.

Gambling advertisements are now completely banned near schools, religious institutions, playgrounds, shopping malls, and other locations frequented by children.

For outdoor advertising, operators may only use digital or electronic billboards, with a strict limit of two advertisements per hour.

Print media gambling ads are restricted to sports sections of newspapers, with only two placements permitted per week.

The government has completely prohibited gambling advertisements through roadshows.

Mandatory Warning Messages and Compliance Requirements

All approved gambling advertisements must prominently display specific warning messages and compliance information. Each ad must include:

    • The BCLB license number
    • The warning “Gambling is addictive! Play responsibly!”
    • Age restriction stating gambling is not for anyone under 18
    • The operator’s name and physical address
    • A customer care contact number
    • The message “Authorized and regulated by the Betting Control and Licensing Board”

    Digital Platform Obligations

Social media companies operating in Kenya must now restrict gambling advertisements to verified adult audiences and ensure full compliance with the new regulations.

Online betting platforms are required to install age verification systems before users can access gambling content.

The regulations also prohibit speed dial options and what authorities term “aggressive, predatory messaging” in gambling advertisements.

    Content Restrictions Target Glamorization

The new guidelines specifically prohibit any advertising that glamorizes gambling or presents it as a quick path to wealth.

Advertisements cannot feature testimonials or present gambling as a means to achieve personal success or social status.

All call-to-action messages encouraging viewers to place bets are banned, marking a significant departure from previous advertising practices that often included direct betting prompts.

    Industry Response and Compliance Timeline

The gambling industry had been operating under a complete advertising blackout since late April, when the BCLB cited concerns over the “rampant airing” of gambling advertisements during the 5am-10pm watershed period and excessive exposure of gambling content to vulnerable populations.

Media houses are now required to verify that all gambling advertisements they air or publish have received both BCLB approval and KFCB classification before broadcast or publication.

All advertising must also comply with the newly introduced Code of Conduct for Media Practices, 2025.

    Public Health Focus

The regulatory overhaul reflects growing government concern about gambling addiction rates in Kenya, particularly among young people.

The 30-day suspension was implemented to allow authorities to develop comprehensive guidelines focused on promoting responsible gambling practices.

“The changes are meant to promote safe gambling and protect the vulnerable, especially the youth,” Makau emphasized, noting that all gambling operators must now submit advertisement requests for dual approval before any content can be distributed.

The ban on celebrity and influencer endorsements represents one of the most significant restrictions, as these marketing strategies had become increasingly popular among gambling operators seeking to reach younger demographics through social media platforms.

    Enforcement and Penalties

While specific penalties for violations were not detailed in the announcement, the multi-agency enforcement framework suggests serious consequences for non-compliance.

The involvement of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations indicates potential criminal charges for violations of the new advertising standards.

The Financial Reporting Centre’s inclusion in the enforcement team suggests authorities will also monitor the financial aspects of gambling advertising to ensure compliance with money laundering and financial crime prevention measures.

    Regional Implications

Kenya’s comprehensive approach to gambling advertising regulation positions the country as a leader in responsible gambling advocacy in East Africa.

The celebrity and influencer ban, in particular, addresses modern marketing techniques that traditional advertising regulations had not previously covered.

The new framework requires continuous monitoring and reporting, with the BCLB maintaining oversight of all gambling advertising content while working with partner agencies to ensure comprehensive enforcement across all media platforms.

As gambling advertisements return to Kenyan media under these strict new guidelines, the industry faces a dramatically different regulatory landscape that prioritizes public health and youth protection over promotional freedom.

  • Victor Wanyama Makes A Return To Harambee Stars, Olunga Dropped

Victor Wanyama Makes A Return To Harambee Stars, Olunga Dropped

NAIROBI, Kenya, May 27, 2025 – Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has come out of retirement to rejoin the national team.

The former Tottenham midfielder is part of a 25-man provisional squad named on Tuesday evening by head coach Benni McCarthy for next month’s international friendly against Chad.

Over the weekend, Wanyama had revealed to BBC Sport Africa that he was mulling over a return to the national team following prodding by McCarthy.

Wanyama, however, was then non-committal, only promising to make an announcement soon.

The midfield lynchpin last donned the national jersey in November 2020 when Kenya lost to Comoros by a solitary goal in their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.

He, shortly after, hang his boots in September 2021 albeit there were discussions around bringing him back to the national team in December 2022.

The discussions were spearheaded by then Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba who argued that Wanyama still had a lot to contribute to Harambee Stars.

    Double header friendly

Stars will face the central Africans on June 7 and 10 in Morocco in what will be McCarthy’s third and fourth matches in charge of the national team.

The South African has thus far drawn once and lost once — a 3-3 draw and 2-1 loss to Gabon in their 2026 World Cup qualifier in March.

Kenya are preparing to co-host the Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) in August, alongside Tanzania and Uganda.

A glaring absence from Tuesday’s squad is skipper Michael Olunga who plies his trade for Al Duhail in Qatar.

  • CAF Expresses Concern Over Kenya’s Stadium Readiness Ahead of CHAN Tournament

CAF Expresses Concern Over Kenya’s Stadium Readiness Ahead of CHAN Tournament

Inspection team finds major venues behind schedule with just over two months to kickoff

Kenya’s preparations to co-host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) have come under scrutiny from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), with inspection officials expressing disappointment over the current state of tournament venues.

The CAF delegation, led by federation Third Vice President Pierre Alain Mounguengui, conducted an assessment tour last week and found several facilities significantly behind schedule, raising concerns about Kenya’s readiness to co-host the tournament alongside Uganda and Tanzania from August 2-30.

The most pressing concern centers on Kirigiti Stadium in Kiambu County, designated as a key training venue, where construction crews are still leveling the ground with heavy machinery.

Sources familiar with the inspection revealed that grass has yet to be planted on the pitch, creating a timeline challenge given that new turf requires approximately two months to become match-ready.

“These guys think that we are big jokers on earth,” said an anonymous source who participated in the inspection tour. “How can we say that we are on the right track when we have caterpillars on the pitch still leveling the ground?”

The CAF team expected to find venues in final preparation stages rather than ongoing major construction work. Of the designated training facilities—including Ulinzi Sports Complex, Police Sacco Stadium, and two pitches at Kasarani—only Ulinzi Sports Complex was deemed close to completion.

A significant technical concern identified during the inspection was the absence of floodlighting at most training venues. CAF officials noted this as a “major concern” that requires immediate attention, as proper lighting is essential for evening training sessions and potential broadcast requirements.

The main competition venues—Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani—also face pending installations including floodlights, giant screens, and LED boards. At Nyayo Stadium, construction of a perimeter wall remains ongoing.

Sources attributed the construction delays to funding challenges, revealing that main contractors have not received payments, creating a cascading effect that prevents subcontractors from accelerating their work.

This financial bottleneck has slowed progress across multiple venues despite the approaching deadline.

Local Organising Committee chairman Nicholas Musonye acknowledged the Kirigiti Stadium situation while expressing confidence in the main venues’ readiness.

“The only challenge we are facing is the Kirigiti training venue, but we hope it will be ready for use by the end of July,” Musonye stated.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya defended Kenya’s preparations, citing the government’s Ksh 1.6 billion hosting fee payment and significant infrastructure investments.

“There should be no cause for alarm,” Mvurya said during a Monday event in Homa Bay County.

The 2024 CHAN, featuring 19 teams including the three host nations, showcases players competing exclusively in their domestic leagues.

The tournament has already faced multiple postponements—originally scheduled for September 2024, then February 2025, before settling on the current August dates.

Kenya’s hosting capabilities remain under international scrutiny, particularly as the country prepares to co-host the larger 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

However, budget documents reveal that the required Ksh 3.9 billion for the 2027 AFCON rights fee was omitted from the 2025-2026 budget allocation, adding another layer of concern to Kenya’s continental football hosting ambitions.

With just over two months remaining before kickoff, Kenya faces a race against time to address CAF’s concerns and demonstrate its capability to successfully co-host major continental football competitions.

El Clásico 2025: How Real Madrid and Barcelona Left Us Speechless

Few rivalries in sports can match the sheer intensity of El Clásico. When Real Madrid and Barcelona face off, it transcends football, becoming a global cultural phenomenon that enchants millions. While yesterday’s scores may have settled, the echoes of this battle will resonate long after the final whistle. The latest clash in 2025 was no exception, delivering a rollercoaster of emotions, jaw-dropping moments, and storylines that will keep fans buzzing for weeks. Let’s unpack the most intriguing narratives that made this El Clásico a thriller for the ages.

A Battle of Titans: The Scoreline That Kept Us Guessing

From the opening whistle, the Santiago Bernabéu was electric. Real Madrid, with their trademark flair, faced a rejuvenated Barcelona side eager to reclaim their dominance. The match ended in a pulsating 3-3 draw, but the scoreline only tells half the story. Both teams traded blows like heavyweight boxers, with momentum swinging wildly. Real Madrid’s lightning-fast counterattacks, led by Vinícius Jr.’s blistering pace, were matched by Barcelona’s intricate tiki-taka, orchestrated by a resurgent Pedri. Every goal felt like a plot twist, leaving fans on the edge of their seats.

Star Power Shines: Young Guns and Veterans Collide

This El Clásico showcased a fascinating blend of youth and experience. For Real Madrid, Jude Bellingham proved why he’s the heartbeat of their midfield. His audacious long-range strike in the 67th minute was a moment of pure magic, curling past Barcelona’s keeper and igniting the Bernabéu. Conversely, Barcelona’s 17-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal stole the show. His fearless dribbling and pinpoint assist for Robert Lewandowski’s equaliser reminded everyone why he’s being hailed as the next big thing.

Veterans weren’t outdone, either. Lewandowski, at 36, showed he’s still a lethal finisher, while Luka Modrić’s masterful playmaking for Real Madrid proved age is just a number. The clash of generations added a layer of intrigue as fans debated whether the future or the past ruled the day.

    Tactical Chess: Managers’ Masterstrokes

The tactical battle between the managers was as gripping as the action on the pitch. Real Madrid’s cool-headed strategist, Carlo Ancelotti, opted for a high-pressing game to disrupt Barcelona’s rhythm. Meanwhile, Barcelona’s Hansi Flick leaned into quick transitions, exploiting spaces behind Madrid’s defence. The chess match unfolded with bold substitutions-Ancelotti’sintroduction of Eduardo Camavinga shifted the midfield dynamic, while Flick’s gamble on a young winger paid off with a crucial goal. These decisions kept analysts and fans alike dissecting every move post-match.

Controversial Calls: VAR Steals the Spotlight

No El Clásico is complete without a dose of controversy, and 2025 delivered. A late penalty call for Barcelona sparked heated debates, with replays showing minimal contact. VAR’s decision to uphold the call left Real Madrid fans fuming, while Barcelona supporters celebrated the equaliser it produced. Social media platforms like X lit up with reactions, with #ElClasicotrending worldwide as fans shared memes and hot takes. This moment underscored the acceptable margins that define these epic encounters.

The fallout from this El Clásico is packed with narratives:

Can Barcelona Build on Their Resilience? This draw showcased a Barcelona side rediscovering its swagger. Will they carry this momentum into the La Liga title race?
Vinícius Jr.’s Quest for Greatness: His electrifying performance has reignited talks of a Ballon d’Or push. Can he maintain this form?
Pressure on Ancelotti? Despite the draw, Real Madrid’s inconsistent season has fans questioning whether Ancelotti’s magic is fading.

  • PSG Finish Off Arsenal to Reach Champions League Final

PSG Finish Off Arsenal to Reach Champions League Final

Paris Saint-Germain clinched a place in the Champions League final as goals by Fabian Ruiz and Achraf Hakimi gave them a 2-1 win over Arsenal in the second leg of their last-four tie on Wednesday, securing a 3-1 aggregate triumph.

Ruiz crashed in a shot from the edge of the area in the 27th minute at the Parc des Princes to leave PSG firmly in the driving seat after they had withstood an early bombardment from the visitors.

Already leading in the tie after Ousmane Dembele’s goal in last week’s first leg, PSG then saw Vitinha have a second-half penalty saved.

However, Hakimi put the tie beyond Arsenal when he scored in the 72nd minute, even if Bukayo Saka did then pull one back for the visitors.

PSG advance to a showdown in Munich on May 31 against Inter Milan, and it will be the second Champions League final in their history, five years after a defeat by Bayern Munich in Lisbon.

Arsenal, meanwhile, saw their European dream come to an end as they fell short of reaching what would have been their second final, 19 years after losing to Barcelona in Paris.

Still without a trophy since the 2020 FA Cup, all that is left to play for now for Mikel Arteta’s side is securing a third consecutive second-place finish in the Premier League.

There was an electric atmosphere all evening in Paris, and PSG were able to celebrate getting to a final in front of their fans for the first time, after their victory against RB Leipzig in the last four in 2020 was played behind closed doors during the pandemic.

There was a feverish mood in and around the ground pre-match, but PSG have tripped up in big Champions League ties plenty of times over the last decade.

In addition, their top scorer Dembele was not in the starting line-up having come off with a hamstring problem in the first leg.

Arsenal, with Thomas Partey back in midfield after missing the first leg through suspension, did their best to silence the raucous home support by throwing everything at the Parisians right from the off.

Declan Rice headed just wide, and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma denied Gabriel Martinelli from close range before producing a stunning save low to his left to keep out a Martin Odegaard shot, all inside the opening eight minutes.

PSG did eventually settle, and they almost went ahead on 17 minutes when Desire Doue teed up Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, whose curling shot hit the far post.

Then Doue wasted a great chance, shooting straight at David Raya in the Arsenal goal after Bradley Barcola had intercepted a loose ball.

But PSG did score before the half-hour mark, the goal coming in the wake of a free-kick awarded for a Rice foul on Kvaratskhelia.

Vitinha’s delivery was headed out by Partey but fell to Ruiz on the edge of the box, and he controlled before smashing in a left-foot shot as the ball bounced back up.

It was the ideal moment for the 29-year-old Spaniard to score his first Champions League goal.

Barcola failed to convert a good chance for the hosts to score again moments later, and Arsenal still had some hope going into the second half.

Only another stunning Donnarumma save with his fingertips prevented Saka from pulling one back on 64 minutes, before PSG were awarded a spot-kick.

German referee Felix Zwayer gave the penalty after being summoned to the pitchside monitor when a shot by Hakimi brushed the outstretched hand of Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Arteta was furious at the decision, yet Vitinha’s kick was turned away by Raya diving to his left.

Nevertheless, PSG made it 2-0 on the night when Dembele, on from the bench, teed up Hakimi to finish in style.

This being PSG, however, there was a wobble as Saka quickly pulled one back from close range after Arsenal substitute Leandro Trossard had got the better of Marquinhos on the wing.

Saka then somehow blazed over with an open goal gaping from Riccardo Calafiori’s cross, ensuring that there would be no miracle Arsenal comeback and it would be PSG’s night.

  • Violence Mars Gor Mahia vs Shabana FC Match at Gusii Stadium

Violence Mars Gor Mahia vs Shabana FC Match at Gusii Stadium

What began as a highly anticipated Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League clash between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia quickly descended into chaos Sunday afternoon as fans from both sides engaged in violent confrontations at Gusii Stadium in Kisii County.

Several spectators, predominantly women, sustained injuries requiring hospitalization after stone-throwing clashes erupted over seating arrangements at the packed venue. The incident has once again highlighted persistent hooliganism issues plaguing Kenyan football.

    Tension Builds Over Stadium Allocation

The violence reportedly broke out when Gor Mahia supporters, allocated only three sections of the stadium’s terraces compared to Shabana’s ten, attempted to force their way into additional areas after their designated spaces filled to capacity by 11:00 AM.

“The three stands were not enough to accommodate the Gor Mahia fans who quickly filled the stands early in the morning,” a witness reported. “On seeing that Shabana fans had been allocated more space, Gor Mahia fans started forcing their way onto the other stands.”

What followed was a chaotic scene as supporters hurled stones at each other across the terraces, transforming the previously festive atmosphere into running battles that security personnel struggled to contain.

    Stadium at Maximum Capacity

The 12,000-capacity Gusii Stadium had reached its limit by 11:30 AM, with more supporters still queuing outside hoping to gain entry for the 2:00 PM kickoff.

The stadium’s suitability for hosting such a high-profile match had been questioned in advance, with Gor Mahia reportedly requesting an alternative venue that could accommodate their large following.

“Fans from both teams have been engaging each other in online banter on who will have the last laugh. I suspect that could have also flared up the tempers coming into this match,” said Bernard “Pepe” Ochieng, a former Shabana player.

Stadium announcers made repeated calls for calm as the violence escalated, urgently requesting ambulances to transport injured fans to nearby hospitals.

Despite their efforts, the pleas largely fell on deaf ears as the stone-throwing continued.

“Our fans, let’s settle down and remain calm. The situation is being handled,” an announcer was heard saying over the stadium’s public address system.

The match eventually kicked off after a 42-minute delay once security personnel managed to restore relative order.

    Championship Implications

The fixture carried significant weight in the league standings, with Gor Mahia sitting third with 50 points while Shabana occupies fourth position with 46 points. Shabana entered the match on strong form, riding an eight-game unbeaten streak that has turned Gusii Stadium into what local fans call “a fortress” since coach Peter Okidi took charge in January.

For the first time in its history, Gusii Stadium featured pitch-side LED screens for advertising and other endorsements, adding to the high-profile nature of the event.

This incident marks another unfortunate chapter in Kenyan football’s ongoing struggle with fan violence, raising serious questions about security protocols and venue selection for matches between teams with large, passionate followings.

  • Class Is Permanent: Eliud Kipchoge Earns Millions Despite Sixth-Place Finish at 2025 London Marathon

Class Is Permanent: Eliud Kipchoge Earns Millions Despite Sixth-Place Finish at 2025 London Marathon

Eliud Kipchoge, the legendary marathon runner, once again proved that class is permanent, pocketing millions in despite finishing sixth at the 2025 TCS London Marathon.

The two-time Olympic champion reportedly earned a hefty appearance fee of KSh 24 million (approximately $176,000), plus an additional KSh 1.2 million for his top-10 finish, according to CNN.

The 40-year-old marathon icon clocked 2:05:25 in the elite men’s race, finishing behind winner Sabastian Sawe, who took the title in an impressive 2:02:25.

Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo claimed second place in a remarkable marathon debut, followed by defending champion Alexander Mutiso Munyao in third, Olympic silver medalist Abdi Nageeye in fourth, and Paris 2024 gold medalist Tamirat Tola in fifth.

Under clear skies with temperatures reaching 21°C, over 56,000 runners participated in the iconic race from Greenwich Park to The Mall. Kipchoge’s participation, his first in London since 2020, was a major draw for the event, one of the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors.

His substantial appearance fee reflects the value organizers place on his global appeal, even as younger athletes challenge his dominance.

The London Marathon offered a total prize purse of $308,000 (£243,000), with the winner earning $55,000.

Prize money decreases with finishing position, making Kipchoge’s reported KSh 1.2 million for sixth place consistent with estimated earnings for top-10 finishers.

However, it’s the KSh 24 million appearance fee that highlights the financial clout of a runner with 11 World Marathon Major victories and an unparalleled career.

Kipchoge’s performance comes after a challenging period, including a rare DNF at the 2024 Paris Olympics due to a back injury.

Yet, his sixth-place finish at age 40 demonstrates remarkable resilience, and his earnings reaffirm his status as marathon royalty.

“Eliud remains a legend,” said race director Hugh Brasher. “His presence elevates the event, inspiring runners of all levels.”

The 2025 London Marathon also celebrated its charitable impact, with participants raising funds toward a cumulative £1 billion since the event’s inception.

For Kipchoge, the race was less about the podium and more about legacy—and a lucrative reminder that his name still commands millions.

‪Sabastian Sawe Wins Men’s Only London Marathon, Eliud Kipchoge Finishes Sixth

Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe put in a masterclass run to win the men’s race at the London Marathon on Sunday.

Sawe clocked 02:02:27 to cut the tape, having broken away from the leading pack after 30km.

Ugandan legend Jacob Kiplimo finished second after timing 02:03:37, in what was his marathon debut, as immediate former defending champion, Alexander Mutiso Munyao, took third after clocking 02:04:20.

It was yet another disappointing outing for two-time world record holder Eliud Kipchoge, who finished sixth after timing 02:05:25.

It took some time for the race to take shape but when it did it was Sawe who was featuring on the lips of the commentators.

The Valencia Marathon champion had been part of a 10-man leading pack that also included Kipchoge, Olympic champion Tamirat Tola, Kiplimo, Munyao, Dutchman Abdi Nageeye.

After 15km, it was the evergreen Kipchoge at the head of the pack, with his younger compatriots following closely behind.

However, at the 30km mark, Sawe showed others a clean pair of heels, creating daylight between himself and the others as he broke away.

Kiplimo made the next move to break away, attempting to catch up with the Kenyan who seemed to be running short on his energy reserves with about 5km to go.

Nonetheless, boasting an average time of 14:47, Sawe was able to solidify his lead and romp home to his first ever World Marathon Majors victory.

  • Themed Slot Games: What Does It Mean?

Themed Slot Games: What Does It Mean?

The success of slot machines can’t be denied. Since pretty much the moment they were released, slot games became super successful. Within a decade of the first slot machine’s creation, machines like it were available around the United States, in bars and pubs.

Even after a ban made it so slot games can no longer be used as gambling devices in bars, the fruit machine took their place, and remained a hit. It also might be a sort of progenitor of the themed slot. But, just what do we mean by themed slots? That is what we are here to explain.

    What are Themed Slots?

Themed slots are pretty much what the name suggests; slot games that carry some sort of theme that enhances the experience of the players. If you were to visit an online casino of any sort, like the christchurchcasino.com for example, you would find an assortment of slot games, with unique, interesting, and inviting aesthetics. These are all themed slot games.

Some may wonder, why are themed slots growing in popularity now? But, as we said, fruit machines could be considered themed slots, and they’ve been successful since the early 20thcentury. The question we should be asking is why themes have gotten so diverse now. The answer to that is simple; the evolution of technology has made it possible.

    Popular Slot Themes

When discussing slot themes, we can’t ignore the success of the historical aesthetic. It seems that many people are fascinated by the ancient world, as Egyptian-themed, Chinese-themed, and Roman-themed slots climb to the top of any casino online. Furthermore, Medieval history seems to also hit the spot, as slots inspired by the dark ages are always a treat for gamblers.

For those who like to inject a little magic into their gambling, fantasy-themed slots are also on the rise. We are seeing more and more dragons, elves, and sorcerers appear alongside brave heroes, to help adventurous gamblers get the jackpot. On the other end of the spectrum, science fiction-themed slots are not far behind in terms of popularity. But, are all customers satisfied with this shift?

    Do People Like Themed Slots?

While there may be some that miss “the good ole’ days,” for the most part, customers couldn’t be happier with themed slot games. The main reason for that is that there are even slot themes that appeal to gamblers who don’t like themed slots. For example, there are retro slots and old-school slots, that do their best to emulate the style we most commonly associate with the early days of the industry.

In other words, themed slots are a universally beloved phenomenon in online gambling. They’ve made slots a lot more creative and a lot more engaging, and have served to bring in a brand new audience. Their effectiveness is in their aesthetic, and nothing else. Themes don’t alter the gameplay of slots, nor do they affect the outcome. They are simply a visual enhancement, that amplifies fan enjoyment.

Rachier to Extend 17-Year Reign as Gor Mahia Chairman in Unopposed Bid as Gidi Gidi Joins SG Race

Gor Mahia Football Club is set to retain its longest-serving chairman, Ambrose Rachier, who is the only candidate vying for the position ahead of the club’s elections this Sunday.

Rachier, who has led the club since 2008, will serve his final term, which will run until 2029. Should he assume the chairman position, he will add another four years to his remarkable 17-year tenure at the helm of the club.

A statement from the Gor Mahia FC Election Board, led by Chairman Gichu Wahome, confirmed the list of cleared candidates following a thorough review.

The statement reads, “This is to inform you that the Gor Mahia Football Club Election Board received the following applications for consideration and clearance to contest the four vacant positions in the management of Gor Mahia Football Club. After a thorough scrutiny and review, the Election Board cleared the following candidates to contest in the forthcoming election.”

The Vice Chairman position has been assured to Victor Omondi, who remains unchallenged in his bid. Omondi is set to serve another term in the key leadership role, with no other candidate contesting for the post.

The Secretary General position has seen three candidates cleared to contest. Sam Ochola, who is seeking a second term, will face competition from Nicanor Arum and Joseph Ogidi Oyoo, famously known as Gidi Gidi.

Gidi Gidi, who is well-known for his contribution to the iconic song Unbwogable and his popular radio show Patanisho, adds a unique element to the elections. His entry into the race brings attention, particularly from fans who are excited to see a popular public figure in the leadership contest.

The Honorary Treasurer position will see a contest between Gerphas Ogola and Philip Nyakwana. Both candidates have been cleared to run for this crucial role, which is responsible for overseeing the financial management of the club.

  • Concerns Grow Over Timothy ‘Babu’ Ouma’s Extended Stay in Nairobi

Concerns Grow Over Timothy ‘Babu’ Ouma’s Extended Stay in Nairobi

Concerns are mounting over the prolonged stay of midfielder Timothy ‘Babu’ Ouma in Nairobi following the recent international break, with sources close to the player raising questions about his commitment to his new club, Slavia Praha. The Harambee Stars star, who transferred to the Czech Republic-based club from Swedish side IF Elfsborg in January, has yet to make his debut for the team and appears to be in no rush to return.

Reports circulating in Nairobi suggest that Ouma has been spotted partying at various hotspots around the city, fueling speculation that the 20-year-old may be reluctant to resume his duties with Slavia Praha. Sources close to the player claim he has refused to return to Prague for reasons that remain undisclosed, prompting concern among fans and club officials alike.

Ouma’s move to Slavia Praha earlier this year was hailed as a significant step in his burgeoning career, following a promising stint with IF Elfsborg in Sweden. The attacking midfielder, who rose to prominence with Nairobi City Stars before his European adventure began, was expected to make an immediate impact in the Czech First League. However, his absence from the pitch and his extended stay in Nairobi have left many wondering about his next move.

Neither Ouma nor his representatives have commented publicly on the situation, leaving room for speculation to grow. Social media has been abuzz with reactions from fans, some expressing disappointment while others defend the young star’s right to enjoy time in his home city after a demanding season abroad.

Slavia Praha, currently a powerhouse in Czech football, has not issued an official statement regarding Ouma’s status, but the club is reportedly monitoring the situation closely. With the season in full swing, the pressure is mounting for Ouma to return and prove his worth on the European stage.

Ouma’s journey from the streets of Nairobi to the international spotlight has been nothing short of remarkable. Born on June 10, 2004, he quickly caught the eye of scouts with his flair and tenacity, earning a call-up to the Kenyan national team and a transfer to IF Elfsborg in 2022. His subsequent move to Slavia Praha was seen as the next chapter in a promising career, but his current hiatus has cast a shadow over those expectations.

As of now, it remains unclear when—or if—Ouma plans to rejoin his teammates in Prague. With his talent undeniable but his intentions uncertain, the football world waits to see whether this rising star will rise to the occasion or risk fading into the Nairobi nightlife.
