VIDEO: Moments When The Ugandan Military Took Over Entebbe Runway Before Arresting And Bundling Away Bobi Wine

Bobi Wine a prolific Ugandan legislature today made his way home after a trip to the USA where he had gone to seek specialized treatment following torture in the military camp where he was being held on treason charges which were trumped by the regime.

Bobi made a stopover at the Nairobi’s JKIA where he was received joyfully with airport staff and fellow passengers who scrambled for photos with him. Aboard Kenya Airways, Bobi sat calmly and later in the middle of the flight drowned into deep thoughts perhaps wondering what was awaiting when the plane touched down.

The writings were already on the wall, the government had banned public gathering and warned against turning out for Bobi’s grand reception which had been scheduled from the Entebbe airport.

Bobi Wine’s brother was arrested earlier this morning while making preparations for the welcoming of his brother. Police had also camped at various homes of leading opposition leaders stopping them from leaving to mobilize grounds for receiving Bobi Wine.

When the plane touched down in Entebbe, Bobi seemed uneasy perhaps the reality was hitting him that nothing had changed as the military had taken over the airport as if it was a high profile terrorist landing. The military was literally on the run way. The plane carrying Bobi was even taken to the far end of the airport where the military was waiting.

As soon as he got off the plane, he was met by army officials who first greeted him before turning into their custom beastly mode, bundling him into an awaiting military van and driving him away to unknown destination. Press was totally blocked and passengers were restricted from filming anything. Those found had their phones confiscated and photos deleted. We’re however, the Kenya Insights so we had our ways.

  • Police Raid At Mwalimu Abduba Dida’s South C Home Ties Him To A Prostitution And Human Trafficking Syndicate

Police Raid At Mwalimu Abduba Dida’s South C Home Ties Him To A Prostitution And Human Trafficking Syndicate

Former Presidential candidate Abduba Dida is a man in trouble, away from his positive public image glittering with a religious and wise old man, a cloud of darkness engulfs his private life.

During a raid by immigration officers and DCIs at his South C home where members of the public had reported suspicious activities were taking place at his two apartments, 12 Chinese officials engaging in prostitution were arrested. It’s said this was a brothel running right in Dida’s home.

Police discovered sex enhancing drugs, filming equipments which points at possible porn production. Rumours Of Dida engaging in illegal activities as human trafficking didn’t start flying today but have been there since he surfaced to the political scenes in 2013.

According to a Twitter user by the name Of choppy and who’s a neighbor, the raid was timely, “The guy does  illegal businesses in his premises. I was there myself.he seems was engaging in trafficking and money laundering. His boys were busy yapping how  they have pocketed the system. When abduba came he was arrested. Hiyo kameme yake ikaisha hapo pap!”

“Some like Abduba Dida are just vying to market their human trafficking businesses.” Said blogger Alai in 2013. Dida apparently owns an agency that sends Kenyans to the Middle East for employment and it’s in this that he’s suspected to be involved in the illegal activities.

In a swoop targeting fugitives, human traffickers and immigration violators, officers uncovered that Dida’s apartment was operating as a brothel and 12 Chinese prostitutes; eight girls and four men were arrested.

One of the Chinese men arrested in the raid was on the police watch list for prostitution and illegal gambling and had been deported in 2017 only to sneak back into the country disguised under a new passport. Immigration has marked all the arrested as illegal immigrants and are currently being processed for deportation.

At the same time, ten Uganda citizens set to be trafficked To Saudi Arabia by a Kenyan trafficker were also unearthed in the raid. This becomes the first public explode the former presidential candidate is having with the law and will be interesting to watch how it all goes.

Kenyan businessman Don Bosco Gichana who has been jailed without trial in Tanzania for almost six years has finally been set free.

Through the negotiations with Tanzania President John Maghufuli , Mr Gichana has been sentenced in a plea-bargain deal in which he admitted guilty to conspiracy to commit a crime and money laundering for a negotiated lesser sentence of five years in prison(Which he has arleady served) and a fine of approximately Kshs.13.4 to Sh15m which the once monied flamboyant politician is said to be able to afford.

At one time, all Tanzanian lawyers went on strike withdrawing services in protest of his arrest and the detention of his Tanzanian advocate. He was accused that between 2008 and 2010 he filed false tax returns electronically to the US State Department of Treasury internal revenue service using different names of Dale Houston, Herbert Breneman and Syron Hess among others.

Gichana was first arrested on March 29, 2013, when he went to Tanzania to visit Mwale who had been in detention since August 2011 over various charges, among them money laundering.

He was arrested at the Namanga border point on his way back to Kenya after visiting Mwale at the Arusha Central Prison. As it stands, the friends and family are working to pay the fine to secure his freedom and unless something happens, he’s a free man. More details to follow.

  • Kenyans Reacts To The New Police Reforms, Uniform And They’re Disgusted

Kenyans Reacts To The New Police Reforms, Uniform And They’re Disgusted

President Uhuru Kenyatta today enacted major reforms in the structure, command, control and welfare of the National Police Service. Speaking when he received a task force report on police reforms at the Kenya School of Government in Nairobi today, President Kenyatta said the reforms  are aimed at making the police a “service that is respected” rather than “a force that is feared”.

The report prepared by the taskforce headed by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i spells out an array of measures to unify the Kenya Police and the Kenya Administration Police formations. The Head of State made it clear that the reforms, ranging from the changes in structure and command, integration of Regular and Administration Police, change of uniform, rebranding of colleges, introduction of housing allowances for junior officers, are meant to make the police force more efficient.

The reforms will put smiles on police officers, especially those in the lower ranks, who have traditionally lived in congested houses with no option of living in houses of their choice. The officers will now be paid house allowance and will live in places of their choice. “To solve the problem of housing police and prisons officers, and to better integrate them with the Kenyans they serve, the policy of mandatory and free housing for junior officers in institutional houses is hereby abolished. Instead, house allowances for all ranks of these officers will be provided,” said the Head of State. President Kenyatta ordered the National Treasury to factor in the new allowances in the supplementary budget.

The Head of State said the reforms are aimed at raising the morale of the security officers by improving their conditions of service. “They (reforms) will clarify and simplify command and control, increase both accountability and performance and they will make the police more than equal to the threats that face our nation,” said the President Kenyatta at the meeting attended by all senior police officers.

The President said the reforms he unveiled were the culmination of the transformations he started when the Jubilee Government took office in 2013. “When I took office in 2013 the National Police Service budget was slightly over Sh50 billion, today we have almost doubled the allocation to almost Sh100 billion tangibly demonstrating our commitment to the reform agenda,” said the President. He said the police service today has more than 5,000 vehicles in service to increase police mobility and response.

    The new police look

The President also cited the other milestones like the command and control centre in Nairobi and Mombasa as well as the increased number of police officers. On the reorganisation of the police, President Kenyatta directed the Interior CS and the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet to eliminate overlap and duplication in reporting functions.

The President further said the Deputy Inspector General, Kenya Police Service will now focus on public safety and security while the Deputy Inspector General Administration Police Service will focus on protective and border security as well as combating cattle rustling and banditry. In order to eliminate waste and duplication, 39,680 KPS and 24,572 APS will be integrated as General Duty Police Officers under the command of the Deputy Inspector General Kenya Police Service. “That will give us a total of 64,252 Police Service General-duty Police, given the unified command we can expect better security for Kenyans,” said the President. In the new dispensation, the Deputy IG APS will be in charge of the Border Police Unit, currently known as the Rural Border Patrol Unit, whose core role will be dealing with transnational threats.

The unit will be composed of 6,000 officers. The Deputy IG APS will also be in charge of a new unit that will integrate the Security of Government Buildings (SGB) and the Critical Infrastructure Protection Unit (CIPU) which will have a total of 13,053 officers. The Deputy IG APS will also be in charge of a new unit that will bring together the Kenya Police Service Anti-Stock Theft Unit and the Administration Police Stock Theft Prevention Unit and its strength will be raised to 5,000 officers.

The President unveiled a unified police command as follows (i) One Regional Police Commander (RPC), (ii) One County Police Commander (CPC) (iii) One Sub County Police Commander (SPC), and (iv) Officer Commanding Police Station (OCS)/Ward Commander in charge of a Police Station and its Posts/ Patrol Bases. The Cabinet Secretary for Interior and the Inspector General of Police also spoke at the function.

    Previous police look

    Kenyans have reacted to the the new changes and the General mood is hostile, most are disgusted in a show of disapproval to the changes more specifically on the uniform which has seen the custom one phased out. Below are some of the reactions;

Donald Kipkorir: The Uniforms for our newly unified Kenya Police is Ugly, Dull , Old fashioned & Uninspiring … The Beret is worse … They look like Salvation Army Band … Police Uniform must be one that shows fitness & inspires fear … Here, we were conned.

Joshua Njenga: The new police uniforms are ugly, but the bank accounts of those who made them are beautiful.

Bravin: You all will say am Hating but What makes this a National Police Uniform? No single Colour of the National Flag is represented and the Badges look more of the Uganda National Flag than the Kenya Police Service Flag. Tumeuzwa! Why are they coming after China visit?

Julius Mmasi: Another scum, Let the current uniform for Kenya Police remain intact, I say no to Dull, ugly and fake Chinese uniform with  Ugandan national flag. WHAT SHAME TO OUR POLICE FORCE!?

Abraham Mutai: Hizi ni nini sasa? I thought part of the #PoliceReforms on uniforms size and fitness was supposed to be emphasized. Those times when police looked shaggy, shapeless and badly dressed are over. Police UNIFORM the design especially should be the smartest around. But hizi! Baaad

Hon. Elisha Odhiambo: Dear President Uhuru. New police uniform is NOT police reforms. Reforms can only be achieved  when the following are addressed: decent housing for our police, good salary, ethics and integrity, ethnicity in recruitment and a tamper-proof investigating machinery

Oliver Mathenge: The new Kenya Police uniform is actually very ugly

Sen. Mutula Kilonzo Jr: The new police uniform reminds me of the biblical story of new wine in old wine skins ! Police are poorly paid & live in deplorable conditions .if you ask them for their views , uniform will not be in top ten need list

Kenya West: At this point I think G4S has better looking uniforms than their colleagues here.

Whoever designed this this need to charged with high voltage treason. How could he make our officers look like struggling security firm. We wanted #PoliceReforms not #Policeuniform SO UNINSPIRING!

Which one do you prefer, the old or new uniform?

The Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) has, with other investigative agencies, been investigating banks that were used by persons suspected of transacting illegally with the National Youth Service (NYS). This followed the serious concerns that came to light in May 2018, related to the channelling of NYS funds.

CBK has announced  the conclusion of the first phase of the investigation of the banks that were used by these persons in transacting the NYS funds. The investigations prioritised banks that handled the largest flows, namely; Standard Chartered Bank Kenya Ltd, Equity Bank Kenya Ltd, KCB Bank Kenya Ltd, Co-operative Bank of Kenya Ltd, and Diamond Trust Bank Kenya Ltd.

The main objective of the investigations was to examine the operations of the NYS-related bank accounts and transactions, and in each instance assess the bank’s compliance with the requirements of Kenya’s Anti-Money Laundering/Combating Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) laws and regulations. Violations were identified, principally related to the following:
 failure to report large cash transactions,
 failure to undertake adequate customer due diligence,
 lack of supporting documentation for large transactions, and
 lapses in the reporting of Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs) to the Financial
    Reporting Centre (FRC).

CBK assessed monetary penalties for each of the five banks in accordance with the extent of the violations that were identified and pursuant to CBK’s powers under the Banking Act and the Central Bank of Kenya Act. These penalties are detailed below.

    1. Standard Chartered Bank Kenya Ltd who received Sh1.6B fined Sh 77.5M.

    5. Diamond Trust Bank Kenya Ltd. handled Sh162M and fined Sh56M.

The second phase of the investigations will involve use of these findings by other investigators, inter alia, assessment of criminal culpability by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP). CBK has shared the findings with the relevant investigative agencies for their appropriate action. Further, an additional set of banks will also be identified and investigated.

Shell Fuel Station In Buru Buru Caught Selling Adulterated Fuel

  • Report: HIV Infections Highest Amongst Young Kenyan Women Because Of Sleeping With Older Men

Report: HIV Infections Highest Amongst Young Kenyan Women Because Of Sleeping With Older Men

According to the National Aids and STI Control Programme (NASCOP), HIV prevalence is high among male aged 35 -45 and women 15 -24 because of the relationship between the two.

Currently, an estimated 1.5 million people in Kenya live with HIV and out of this number, youth account for 280,000. Out of the 50percent, adolescent girls and young women are at 21percent.

Report also indicate that of the sampled women in the program, only 17% insists on using condoms during sex. “When you talk about new infections, these are people who are HIV negative today but tomorrow they are HIV positive…the increased numbers among the youth are worrying,” Anthony Chazara, LVCT Health, Youth Programme Officer said.

Transactional sex popularly known as sponsorship arrangement has become a norm in the community with the report linking poverty and peer influence from other successful women pushing young girls into sleeping with older women for cash and other favors.

What this mean is the young men who date these young women are as well tied in the web of infection since they assume faithfulness but unknowingly sharing the same partner with older men who’re having multiple partners  It is such a big worry.

  • Ruto’s Linked Company, KIDL Helicopters Buys A New Chopper And His Sixth, Bell 505 The First In Africa

Ruto’s Linked Company, KIDL Helicopters Buys A New Chopper And His Sixth, Bell 505 The First In Africa

Africair, has delivered a Bell 505 helicopter to KIDL Helicopters Operations in Kenya, Bell announced on 5 September.

The delivery marks the introduction of the first Bell 505 helicopter to a customer in Africa.

Africair Helicopter Support, a newly established Kenya Civil Aviation Authority authorised maintenance organisation, reassembled the aircraft for delivery to KIDL at Wilson Airport in Nairobi. It will now be deployed for VIP transport operations.

The Bell 505 is a five-seat aircraft that features advanced avionics technology. It incorporates dynamic components, advanced aerodynamic design and a dual channel FADEC Turbomeca Arrius 2R engine.

Kwae Island Development Limited (KIDL) allegedly  operates the choppers on behalf of DP Ruto including the controversial helicopter registration 5Y-DSN whose pilot assaulted a police officer years back and was used for country side Jubilee campaigns. The planes were also allegedly chartered to KPLC, KPC and energy ministry in a nutshell.

Interestingly, KIDL got the air ambulance contract for NHIF despite not having the capacity to deliver the job prompting an outsourcing deal with Amref to assist in far flung areas. The awarding of the contract was challenged with the board.

Ruto who’s wealth and sources has been of questioning, recently denied owning any chopper claiming the one he uses is borrowed from Moses Kuria a claim that many laughed off as a lie. The DP has invested heavily in hospitality industry and real estate. He’s remained a center of focus in the anti corruption purge with many calling for a lifestyle audit to determine the truth on his rapidly acquired big empire.

  • Governor Obado Wanted Sharon Otieno To Abort Her Baby But She Refused, Sonko Reveals As He Uncovers Details Of The Cold Murder

Governor Obado Wanted Sharon Otieno To Abort Her Baby But She Refused, Sonko Reveals As He Uncovers Details Of The Cold Murder

As the country continues to find to realities of the coldest murder in the country of Sharon Otieno who was 7 months pregnant, more details continue to trickle in going to prove how much gruesome her death was.

According to the government’s pathologist , Sharon Otieno died  as a result of overbleeding and was stabbed 8 times. 3 times at the back of the neck,  4 back, 1 left side of the stomach.  She also had strangulation marks on her neck.  Her abdomen  was stabbed from the back to the front that’s how the baby in her womb died.

Migori Governor Obado remains the prime person of interest as homicide experts dispatched from Nairobi by DCI embarks on extreme investigations. Sharon was seven months expectant and allegedly the governor was the father. It’s now emerging that Obado had demanded that the lady abort the pregnancy but had refused pushing her to consider blowing it all up on the media and that’s how NMG’s Barack Oduor came in.

Known for not holding back, Nairobi’s Governor has sensationally linked his Migori counterpart into the gruesome murder. Sonko alleged that Obado was responsible for the death of Sharon who was pregnant with his baby and instructed her to abort and that’s how it came into play.

Sonko went ahead to condemn Obado for not having used the condom to avoid impregnating. The governor has been lined for questioning by the DCI homicide unit. Apparently, Governor had sent his PA who’s in custody to handle the case that the journalist had brought up.

Sonko remarked that Governor Obado should be prosecuted for the murder in a claim that most people will agree with.

  • Living A Lavish Life, Murdered Rongo University Student Sharon Otieno Was Pregnant With Migori Governor Obado’s Kid And Had An Affair With His Son

Living A Lavish Life, Murdered Rongo University Student Sharon Otieno Was Pregnant With Migori Governor Obado’s Kid And Had An Affair With His Son

At 24, Sharon Otieno’s life has been ended by brutal hands of goons. While she should be enjoying her youthful days, the Rongo university medical records student is no more. Sharon was Governor Okoth Obado’s clande for a long time. As a matter of fact, peoole close to the Governor inform me that she used to accompany him on foreign trips abroad -and on taxpayer’s money. A third-year student at Rongo University College, and with lots of money coming in from Governor Obado, Sharon immersed herself into the glamorous life.

She was a frequent guest at Imperial Hotel in Kisumu where she threw endless parties for her friends -on taxpayer’s money. Sources tell me that an Executive Suite in the hotel was always reserved for her when she was in town -on taxpayer’s money. However, things soon took a nasty twist.

The murdered Migori lass, Sharon Otieno of Rongo University, apparently entertained both her governor, Okoth Obado, and his promiscuous son, Dan Totto, as lovers. The wife-mother, Hellen Odie, wasn’t amused by the revelations and accused Michael Oyamo, the arrested PA, of pimping for her husband, who was severally accompanied by the girl on foreign and local trips. Totto took over when the Old Man was tied up in the county, where he couldn’t visit a hotel alone. Obado is married to two wives who apparently, are sisters. The governor is said to have insatiable appetite for women.

    https://www.facebook.com/100021829680358/posts/185003522237303/

Sharon contacted Barrack Oduor, a Nation Media Group Correspondent based in Homabay to tell her story and how the governor has refused to take responsibility. Like most of escapists, the governor allegedly refused to take responsibility accusing the young lady of being promiscuous, he refused being the father. Sharon told her story and Barrack called the Governor’s office asking for a response -and an adequate response they received. The Governor promised  to send his PA Michael Oyamo to clear the air.

Oyamo met Sharon and Barrack at Graca Hotel in Rongo but he insisted  that they change the venue of the meeting and move to Homa-Bay. The two got into a waiting car whose occupants are Oyamo and a driver. They drive for a few minutes and stop at Ndege Oriedo. Two men jump into the backseat and sandwich Sharon and Barrack. At this point, Oyamo calmly gets out of the car which then speeds off.

Fast forward, Barrack Oduor managed to wrestle the assailants and got out of the moving car -sustaining serious injuries in the process. Sharon’s body was found dumped in Kodera Forest yesterday night. She was seven months pregnant. Michael Oyamo was arrested at JKIA as he tried to leave the country for Rwanda together with Okoth Obado. It is alleged that he already confessed to working under express orders from Obado.

If there are two people who should be put under witness protection immediately, they are Michael Oyamo and Barrack Oduor. If they are taken out, the crucial link between Obado and murder is gone.

A look into her social media pages, Sharon lived an above average life for a typical college girl and given her humble background word from her friends. Vacations, hotel life, the lady seemingly traveled and lived a lavish life from a face value. This could be attributed to her affair with the monied governor who’s also on EACC radar for his overnight acquired wealth as the governor.

    Jet life
    Airport

Cross generational and transactional sex has become rampant and popular amongst young girls especially those in campus who’ve become easy prey for older men who spoil them with money. High HIV infections amongst youths has been attributed to this arrangement that has now been normalized.

DCI Kinoti has despatched a team of homicide detectives to Migori to handle the case of Sharon and we hope they leave no leaf unturned. It’s still fresh in mind the case of another university study, Mercy Keino, the Nairobi university student whose murder was linked to William Kabogo the ex governor of Kiambu.

    Heavily pregnant Sharon Otieno.

Garissa Governor Ali Korane is also in radar over botched assassination of his finance executive Muktar, a twisted case that has had the key witness, hired killer David Mwai murdered in police custody. The picture painted of killer Governors is nothing to be proud about. Regardless of the circumstances, killing Sharon and taking away the life of the unborn is cruelty and evil of high scale that isn’t excusable. The police must ensure justice is served by getting all killers including the governor on concrete linking be brought to book. This must not remain a statistic.

  • Bobi Wine Narrates The Horrible Ordeal He Underwent In The Hands Of Soldiers

Bobi Wine Narrates The Horrible Ordeal He Underwent In The Hands Of Soldiers

WHAT EXACTLY HAPPENED IN ARUA? MY STORY!

Fellow Ugandans, friends and well-wishers from around the world,

I am sorry, I have taken a bit long to write to you about the trials and tribulations, for which you all stood with me. It’s been tough days, as I recover from the physical and mental trauma I endured. I am overwhelmed by your support and words of encouragement. I cannot repay you in any other way, except sticking to those values which bind all of us together- justice, equality and human dignity.

I will be communicating more in the coming days and where possible send my appreciation to the different individuals and organizations. In this post however, I want to recount what exactly happened to me. I am very grateful to my wife Barbie, and my lawyers who narrated to the world these events, but I also wanted to tell this sad story PERSONALLY. I felt more compelled to speak out after reading the many posts written by President Museveni and other government officials about what happened.

I read the things they were saying while I was in detention, and found them absurd to say the least. I was shocked on how they tried to downplay the atrocities committed by security agencies on innocent citizens.
So let me set the record straight.

It was 13th August and it was the last day of campaigns in the Arua municipality by-election. As always we had a great campaign day. As I left the rally, I was convinced that our candidate Hon. Kassiano Wadri would win the election. So we moved from the rally at about 5:30pm and the people followed us, singing songs of freedom and chanting “People Power – Our Power.” Together with Hon. Kassiano and a few other leaders, we parted with the multitude, bade them farewell and went into Royal hotel where Hon. Wadri was staying.

We watched the 7:00pm news from the hotel lobby as we took tea and took stock of the day’s events. It was of course very exciting to watch that day’s news. The anchor said we were clearly ahead of the other candidates and the television relayed images of the massive rally and procession we had had on that day. Shortly after, I decided to move to Pacific hotel where I was staying so as to rest after the very busy day. It was at that point that I sat in my tundra vehicle, in the co-driver’s seat. The gentleman who was driving the tundra that day is one of our drivers (not Yasin). He moved out of the vehicle to call other team members who were supposed to drive with us. He took a bit long and I moved into my other vehicle (a land cruiser) which was right next to the tundra and whose driver was already seated on the driver’s seat. We immediately set off for Pacific hotel as the tundra drove behind us. I did not even see what happened after or how late Yasin ended up on my seat in the tundra. For clarity, he had been driving another vehicle that day.

I had started taking the stairs to my room when this driver came running to say that Yasin Kawuma had been shot. I could not believe it. I asked him where he was and he told me they were parked outside the hotel. We paced down and I saw with my own eyes, my friend and comrade Yasin, giving way as he bled profusely. I quickly asked a team member to take him to hospital and another to call the police. We had not stepped away from that place when angry looking SFC soldiers came, beating up everyone they could see.

As soon as they saw me, they charged saying “there he is” in Swahili. So many bullets were being fired and everyone scampered to safety. I also ran up into the hotel with a throng of people who had gathered around. Inside the hotel, I entered a random room and locked myself in. It is at that point that my media assistant shared with me Yasin’s picture which I tweeted because the world needed to know what was going on.

I could hear the people outside and in the hotel corridors crying for help. I could also hear the soldiers pulling these helpless people past the room in which I was, saying all sorts of profanities to them while beating them mercilessly.

I stayed in the room for a long time. At some point, I heard soldiers pull some woman out of her room and ask her which room Bobi Wine had entered. The woman wailed saying she didn’t know and what followed were terrible beatings. I could hear her cry and plead for help as she was being dragged down the stairs. Up to now, that is one experience that haunts me; that I could hear a woman cry for help, yet I was so vulnerable and helpless. I could not help her.

I stayed put for some hours, and I could hear the soldiers come every few minutes, bang some doors on my floor or other floors and go away. At different times I would sleep off, but was always rudely awakened by the banging of doors and the impatient boots that paced throughout the hotel for the whole night. In the wee hours of the morning, the soldiers started breaking doors of the different hotel rooms. With rage, they broke doors, and I knew they would soon come to my room. I therefore put my wallet and phone into my socks. I also had with me some money which I had earned from a previous music show. I also put it into the socks.

A few minutes later, a soldier hit my door with an iron bar and after two or three attempts the door fell in. We looked each other in the eye as he summoned his colleagues in Swahili. Another soldier pointed a pistol on my head and ordered me to kneel down. I put my hands up and just before my knees could reach the floor, the soldier who broke into the room used the same iron bar to hit me. He aimed it at my head and I put up my hand in defence so he hit my arm. The second blow came straight to my head on the side of my right eye. He hit me with this iron bar and I fell down. In no minute, all these guys were on me- each one looking for the best place to hurt. I can’t tell how many they were but they were quite a number.

They beat me, punched me, and kicked me with their boots. No part of my body was spared. They hit my eyes, mouth and nose. They hit my elbows and my knees. Those guys are heartless!

As they dragged me out of the room, they continued to hit me from all sides. After some time, I could almost no longer feel the pain. I could only hear what they were doing from a far. My cries and pleas went unheeded. The things they were speaking to me all this while, I cannot reproduce here. Up to now, I cannot understand how these soldiers who I probably had never met before in person could hate me so much.

They wrapped me in a thick piece of cloth and bundled me into a vehicle. Those guys did to me unspeakable things in that vehicle! They pulled my manhood and squeezed my testicles while punching me with objects I didn’t see. They pulled off my shoes and took my wallet, phone and the money I had. As soon as the shoes were off, they started hitting my ankles with pistol butts. I groaned in pain and they ordered me to stop making noise for them. They used something like pliers to pull my ears. Some guy unwrapped me and instead tied the thick cloth around my head. They forced my head below the car seat so as to stop me from shouting. Then they hit my back and continued to hit my genitals with objects. The marks on my back, ankles, elbows, legs and head are still visible. I continued to groan in pain and the last I heard was someone hit me at the back of the head with an object – I think a gun butt or something. That was the last time I knew what was going on.

By the time I became conscious again, I was somewhere in a small room with a small window. My legs were tied together with my hands with very tight cuffs. I was bleeding from the nose and ears. I was in great pain. The cloth they had tied me in was red- soaked in blood. My whole body was swollen. I was shaking uncontrollably.

Two soldiers came in. I can now recall that they were visibly pleased to see that I was still alive. They came close to me. One of them apologized in tears about what had happened. “Bobi, I am sorry but not all of us are like that. Some of us actually like you,” he said. He said that doctors were on their way to treat me. I stayed in the same position and after a few hours, about four soldiers came in and lifted me on a piece of cloth. One of them took a picture of me, (I hope to see that picture some day in my life). As we went out, I read “Arua airfield’ somewhere. I was taken into a waiting military helicopter and taken to a place which I later found out was Gulu 4th Division military barracks. It was at that facility that some military doctors came in and started giving me injections.

At that point I could not even complain as I was not yet fully alert. I was very dizzy and had not eaten or drank anything for many hours. My sight was very weak as well. I spent the night there. Late in the night, I was picked again from this detention facility. With my head covered with a dark cloth that felt like a t-shirt, I was taken to Gulu Police Station where I was forced to sign a written statement by an officer called Francis Olugo in the presence of some other officer who I later learnt is the CID head of Gulu. I can hardly recall what was contained in that statement! I was then returned to Gulu military barracks, put on a metallic bed and handcuffed on it. Very early morning, I was picked from this room and taken to another very secluded and dirty room where I was put on another bed, hand-cuffed again and injected with a drug that immediately sent me into a deep sleep.

The following day I can recall that at some point, Hon. Medard Ssegona and Hon. Asuman Basalirwa came to me. My efforts to rise and speak to them didn’t yield much. The moment they saw me, they could hardly hold tears. I have a faint recollection of what they told me, but their visit was very short.

I was later carried into a hall where I saw soldiers dressed smartly. I would lie if I said I fully appreciated what was going on at that point. I was later told that I was appearing before the General Court Martial!!!

After a short while, I was again carried into a military helicopter.

When it landed, I was put into a vehicle and driven to another place which I later found out was Makindye military barracks.

At Makindye, I was now fully alert and had a drink for the first time after two or three days. I saw doctors come in several times and they gave me all kinds of injections. At some point, I tried to object and these guys would hold my arms from behind and inject me anywhere. If I asked what drug it was, the guy would say something like, “This is diclofenac, can’t you see?” At some point, some guy came in and wanted to stitch my ear which had an open wound. I pleaded with him not to, and he relented. All the while I was spending the day and night with my hands and legs cuffed until a few days later. Thankfully although the scars are still visible, the wound on my ear healed.

It was after some time at Makindye that I was able to see my wife and my brother Eddy Yawe, who came in with some lawyers, some friends and dignitaries from the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC). I will never forget the atmosphere in that room- people started crying upon setting eyes on me. At that point, I could not sit, walk or even stand by myself. I was still swollen and spoke with great difficulty due to chest pains. My teeth were shaking and the headache was unbearable. I am thankful that the UHRC made a report which I later read. At least it captured in part, the state in which they found me. As the government agency mandated to fight human rights violations, I am eagerly waiting to see what actions they will take to ensure that no Ugandan is taken through this ever again. Not even President Museveni. I cannot wish what happened to me upon anyone. Not even those soldiers who violated me as if they were beasts. I remember two other things about that visit. Despite the pain I had that day, I remember forcing a smile when they told me that I had been charged with unlawful possession of firearms.

I was told that three guns had been assembled and said to have been found in my room! I could not believe that the state would torture a Ugandan so bad and then frame him with possession of guns! I did not stop thinking about that for all the days I spent at Makindye. How ruthless, how callous, how inhumane could these guys be? It was also on that day that I was told about the alleged stoning of the President’s vehicle.

The other thing I remember is this- I asked my visitors if we had won the Arua election. They told me we had won with a big margin and I thanked God. That strengthened my spirit because I knew that the people were with us, even in the kind of sufferings and indignities we were being subjected to.

I was very sad as I am today, that they murdered my brother Yasin in cold blood and did not allow me to bury him. They told me about my other comrades who were also incarcerated and I kept praying for them. (Of course every visitor had to speak to me in the presence of military personnel.) Although I was very pleased to see all visitors, when I was released, I read the comments which some of the visitors made to the press (particularly government officials). I felt sad that we have a lot of dishonest, cold people who don’t care riding on someone’s tragedy for political capital. I want to believe that we are better than that, dear Ugandans.

Anyway, while at Makindye I was briefed that I was expected in court on 23rd August, about nine days after I was taken there. Some military doctors continued to come in to inject me, wash my wounds and give me pain killers. At night on two occasions, I was put into military vehicles and driven to Kampala Imaging Centre for scans. I could not object or even ask questions. I am worried because one of the machines seemed very dangerous. As soon as I was placed into it and it was switched on, the doctors ran to a safe distance and started seeing me from a small window. It was there that the radiologist told me how one of my kidneys and back had been damaged during the assault. I was however not given any written medical report by the military.

It was clear they wanted me to appear in better shape at the next time of my court appearance and they did everything possible to achieve that. A day or two at Makindye, this guy was candid. He told me it was in my interest to eat well, take in all the medicine and look better by 23rd or else they would not allow the press to see me and I would be remanded again until I was presentable enough! They even forcefully shaved my hair and beards. When I hesitated, this soldier told me, ‘gwe osaaga’ (You are kidding). Two of them held my hands from behind and shaved me by force. At some point, they insisted I must wear a suit for my next appearance before the court martial and asked me to tell my wife to bring me one. I also insisted that I did not have it. At another point I hesitated to allow some eye drops for my right eye which was very red and swollen. I always wanted to know what drugs I was being given. These guys held my arms from behind and one of them literally poured the entire bottle into my eye! Later, the military doctor also provided me with a crutch to aid me in walking. At that point, I was able to stand up, although with difficulty. When you hear all this you may think that all our soldiers are brutal. Far from that, most of them are wonderful people. There are many I interacted with during this ordeal who were extremely professional and sympathetic. It was hard to comprehend how people serving the same force, putting on the same uniform could be very different in appreciation and approach to a citizen of Uganda.

When I was taken back to Gulu on 23rd, I was very happy to see the people who came to court including family members, comrades in the struggle and lawyers. I cannot explain how I felt when the lawyer for the army said that charges of unlawful possession of firearms had been dropped. I did not feel vindicated. I was not excited. I was not moved. I just cannot explain how I felt. I just remembered what these people had done to me and tears came to my eyes. Shortly after, I was rearrested right in front of the courtroom and taken to Gulu prison. At the military prison, I was wearing a red uniform – this time, I was given a yellow one.

Friends, you cannot believe that you can be happy to be in prison but that day I was. I was very happy to leave solitary military confinement and meet up with colleagues who were being held at the Gulu prison. That night I was taken to Lachor hospital in Gulu- other tests and scans were conducted. At that point I was feeling better, especially psychologically since I had reunited with my comrades in the struggle.

Later that night the prison authorities decided to take me into the sickbay as opposed to staying with the other comrades. The other comrades led by Hon. Wadri protested. I could hear them bang the doors of their cell. The following day I was allowed to stay with them. This is when I interacted with the other 32 colleagues who had been arrested in the Arua fracas. Being in the same prison ward with Hon. Gerald Karuhanga, Hon. Paul Mwiru, Hon. Kassiano Wadri, Hon. Mike Mabike, John Mary Sebuufu and many other comrades made it feel like a boarding school. It was not a very happy reunion though. Because of the torture some of our comrades had been permanently injured. I cannot forget the pain which Shaban Atiku was going through. He spent every day and night groaning. The doctors had told him he would never walk again because his back had been permanently broken. Sadly, the world may never know him, but he will never go out of my mind. He would later collapse during a court session at Gulu. When I later met the women who were brutalised, it was very painful to see them and listen to their stories.

Many times we joked about the possibility of being hanged if the regime decided to give us the maximum penalty of the offence we had been charged with! This got many of our comrades silent.

Away from these sad moments, the overall prison leader had a box guitar in the ward and together we sang songs of freedom all night. This was the routine every night until we appeared before the Gulu High Court a few days later, for our bail hearing.

My next communication will be a vote of thanks to the world for the overwhelming support and comradeship. I will also talk about what I think we must do together to continue this struggle for liberty and freedom.

I am glad that authorities finally have bowed to your pressure and #HonZaake has been given bond to travel for urgent specialised treatment and I join the world to demand authorities to #FreeEddyMutwe and other political prisoners. WE SHALL OVERCOME.

NTV’s Dennis Okari Turns Into A Preacher After Messy Separation With Betty Kyalo

October 2015, Kenya’s show biz industry had one outstanding wedding, in one of the most fancied romance stories, the son of Kisii tied noted with the daughter of Kamba. It’s still clear in our photographic memories how the two went on honeymoon in Dubai and toured the world. They painted a perfect couple goal.

Six months down the line, things took different turn and with one child, the couple separated. Different theories flew around including a supposed affair with Mombasa Governor which was fueled with Betty being seen with a Porsche registered under the governors name.

Poster of Okari bring a guest minister.

Okari went into a deep depression and out of the public eye, we’re told he even contemplated suicide at one point. The weight of the separation must have weighed down on him or maybe he was undergoing other issues but one thing due a fact is he was going through a phase.

While Betty went on with her life as nothing happened, Okari took a whole steps back and repositioned his life. Stories from the NTV newsroom gossiped that the presenter got more introverted and part of his therapy was reading and so many books he read.

Okari kept on with his investigative pieces on NTV and it was only until the recent migration from NMG that he got back on prime time news as anchor. Behind the scenes, Okari metamorphosed into not only inspirational speaker but a graceful preacher.

It is just one amazing story in my view, every situation happens for a reason. If his TV career fails or be decides to quit it all together, he can join the lucrative religious industry and become an instant millionaires to afford cars that he couldn’t previously.

Betty on the other hand changed too, she left KTN and opened a beauty parlor and became a slay queen.

Kenyans On Twitter Questions Raila’s Silence On The 16% VAT Increase On Fuel Products

    By Japheth Kilonzo

Kenya’s key Opposition leader Raila Odinga has been relatively silent on national matters despite latest developments which are severely affecting Kenyans.

The former prime minister who on 9th of march 2018 came together with president Uhuru Kenyatta and agreed on “building bridges Initiative” made to help in national healing an event which saw the two bury their hatchet.
Kenyans took to social media to question the silence of the former prime minister following the controversial 16% VAT tax on petroleum products which took effect on 1st September.
Mr Odinga has been the country’s main whistle blower for long and his silence on this matter has left many Kenyans Shocked with many alleging the Handshake has made him silent.
Kenyans on twitter had this to say:
@BenjiNdolo: Did the handshake SILENCE @RailaOdinga to where he can’t even call a press conf to address the obvious. His supporters esp in the slums can barely eat, buy paraffin, most earn 200 a day and fuel is at 140????? Jubilee badly mismanaging the country like Moi. #PunguzaBeiYaMafuta
@IamMachuka: I warned you guys before but you didn’t listen. Handshake was not an easy decision but am blaming Raila for dinning with gov’t. Where is the opposition voice?? Raila Odinga was not for good but for harm.
@bonifacemwangi: President @UKenyatta has assured Kenyans that his government will reduce the high cost of living being experienced in the country. -June 1, 2017. After he was re-elected and handchequed @RailaOdinga, #Kenyaslaves can now sort them out. We are on our own. #PunguzaBeiYaMafuta
@IamMachuka: If Raila Odinga didn’t react on the 10billion NYS scandal, how do you expect him to talk about the fuel huge taxation?? It’s called POWER OF HANDSHAKE! Raila has already been rehabilitated into the system and playing along. #PunguzaBeiYaMafuta
This is the first time as we saw the same on NYS scandal Season 2 where he was later forced to break the silence and assured Kenyans that ending corruption is part of the handshake.
  • Lawyer Wanjao Caesar Ngungi Of Wanjao And Wanjau Advocates Owning Graceland Gardens Apartments Engaged In Unlawful Acts With A Client

Lawyer Wanjao Caesar Ngungi Of Wanjao And Wanjau Advocates Owning Graceland Gardens Apartments Engaged In Unlawful Acts With A Client

In what is yet another case of landlords reigning terror on tenants, one Wanjao Nginge has pounced on his client in what is a plain disregard of basic human rights. Being an advocate of human rights, the story you’re about to read will through you off cliff and make you reconsider choice of a lawyer purely based on humanity aspect.

Eric Theuri a Facebook user, unraveled the occasion on his profile going to show the levels of damage and disregard of the law circumstances constant.

“Yesterday at around 8 P.M I got a distress call to go check on a colleague whom the landlord had sent goons to evict from the house and her 5 year old son was alone in the house with the maid. She was on her way home when she was called. The eviction was without notice. The lady had paid rent for the month albeit 3 days late from the date of payment. A non existent penalty of Kshs 3,000 was imposed for late payment and the landlord disconnected power and water.” Eric opens.

He continues, “The landlord is holding one month deposit rent and Kshs 5,000 water deposit and Kshs 5,000 electricity deposit. The electricity is pre paid. So she called Kenya Power who reconnected. She went to the tribunal and got orders for reconnection of water. It was served on the landlord who disregarded and instead sent goons. The shocking part is that the landlord is an Advocate. A senior Advocate conversant with procedures for eviction. Who knows notice must be given. Who knows court orders must be obeyed. Who knows children must be protected. What I witnessed shocked me to the core. They vandalised the house. It’s the worst example of impunity that I have seen in ages.” He notes.

“So if you know WANJAO CEASAR NGIGE of
WANJAO & WANJAU Advocates owner Graceland Gardens Apartments in Langata tell him SHAME ON HIM. He’s a despicable human being. A poor example to the young Advocates. You don’t treat a person like that. More so a younger colleague.
Share this story. Impunity of this kind is sickening.” Reads parts of his post.

    https://www.facebook.com/571346212/posts/10155391400321213/

Another user Norah Njeri interjected with a different perspective saying the said Landlord is known person known to her, “He told me the story above has no Truth.” To which Eric responded, “NorahNjeri I wouldn’t put my name to this if it wasn’t true. I don’t know him. I have no reason to say untruths about him. The photos are there. I was at the house. I was there when a colleague called him and on being told why he said he was in a meeting and would call back. He didn’t call back. And refused to pick calls. What does he say is not true? That he was paid on 13th August instead of 10th? That he charged a penalty of 3 K? Or that he didn’t disconnect water and electricity? Or he wasn’t served with a court order to reconnect water? What is not true about the story? I can give you names of Advocates who called him before the tenant went to court and he declined to reconnect water. I can give you names of advocates who called him as the goons destroyed the property and he declined to talk or intervene. So tell me what he says is not true.”

One of the people at the heart of the matter talked to this writer saying, “Yes..I was actually one of the people who responded to the distress call. We were there until 3am. The caretaker/agent was arrested and we’re pursuing all legal remedies against the landlord and thugs who vandalised the young advocate’s property.”

All the legal jargon aside, tenants in this country have been subjected to what I can call absolute harassment from landlords like Wanjao who’ll have all justifications for their inhuman acts at any moment. The print of the law shouldn’t overrule its spirit in certain instances. A doctor shouldn’t for example let a patient die because they haven’t paid a fee, you save a life and do the rest after.

Wanjao probably has his own justifications for his actions but on human grounds, there’s a lot to consider before pulling such an action. You can only feel for his clients who have to put up with such an attitude and his disregard to humanity to me is a greater concern. Tenant protection from rogue landlords should a priority to the authorities.

  • In Final 2017 Kenya Election Report, Carter Center Terms Elections ‘Major Setback In Democratic Development’ Urges Momentum on Electoral Reform, Transparent Technology

In Final 2017 Kenya Election Report, Carter Center Terms Elections ‘Major Setback In Democratic Development’ Urges Momentum on Electoral Reform, Transparent Technology

The Carter Center released its final comprehensive Kenya 2017 election observation report today, which outlines its key findings and offers recommendations for reform to strengthen Kenya’s electoral processes, including new annexes that lay out the Center’s findings on women’s participation and on the use of information and communications technology in elections.

The Center’s report recommends that parliament review the electoral framework, making all necessary changes to the electoral law well in advance of the next elections, and urges it to implement the legally mandated two-thirds gender rule. The report also urges the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to move swiftly to implement all recommendations in the KPMG audit of the voter register and to conduct a new voter-registration audit at least 12 months prior to the 2022 election.

The Center calls on legislators and the IEBC to sustain momentum on electoral reform in order to allow for adequate implementation before the 2022 elections, and to prepare and train members of the election commission, judiciary, and other key electoral stakeholders.

The Center notes that in the months since the election, the political atmosphere has improved following the “handshake” between President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga on March 9, 2018. Their rapprochement resulted in the Building Bridges initiative, which has as part of its mandate a review of Kenya’s electoral processes. The Center urges all electoral stakeholders to use the lessons learned from the 2017 elections to inform the Building Bridges initiative and to initiate an electoral reform process in 2018. Recent political posturing over the 2022 presidential election and the upcoming national census and boundary delimitation process raises concerns that an electoral reform process could be delayed.

To move electoral reform forward, parliament should move swiftly to ensure that the requisite number of IEBC commissioners are in place. Meaningful reform cannot be implemented without a fully functioning commission.

Key highlights of the comprehensive report include:

Use of Information and Communications Technology: In an annex to the report, The Carter Center presents its assessment of the use of information and communications technology in Kenya’s election. The annex notes that while the use of these technologies presented numerous challenges during the 2017 electoral cycle, when used effectively, they have the potential to create confidence in the election results at all levels, including the Supreme Court. Having transparent and verifiable evidence and effective mechanisms to distinguish authentic information from fake information is the best way to create confidence in an election outcome.

Given the constitutional mandate that all election processes be transparent, the Center recommends that the IEBC utilize information and communications technology that is transparent and fully verifiable and that offer mechanisms for party agents and observers to check the accuracy of the tabulation and results transmission during an election and after the election is completed.

Women’s participation: The comprehensive report also includes an annex that summarizes its findings regarding women’s political participation during the 2017 electoral process. The Center reiterates its call to all stakeholders charged with strengthening women, youth, and persons with disabilities political participation – including political parties, the IEBC, and the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties – to put corrective measures in place to protect the rights of these and other special-interest groups, as safeguarded in the constitution.

The Center continues to follow the ongoing process in the parliament to pass legislation to implement the two-thirds gender principle mandated by the constitution. Parliament missed the initial five-year deadline for passing such legislation, the one-year extension allowed by the constitution, and several deadlines set by the High Court. Women’s groups challenging the failure of parliament to act have recently agreed to delay returning to court until Sept. 30. If no implementing legislation is passed by then, parliament risks being dissolved under Article 261(5)(6) and (7) of the constitution. To avoid this contingency, the Center urges the parliament to agree on legislation before the new deadline.

The Center conducted consultations in the summer of 2018 on women and youth engagement in political participation in several counties around the country. Both constituencies expressed a strong desire to engage politically but cited numerous financial, cultural, and societal challenges that make it difficult to do so. A summary report of those findings is forthcoming.

Legal framework: The Center encourages stakeholders to conduct a comprehensive review of the electoral legal framework. Parliament should conduct an inclusive consultative process well in advance of the 2022 election cycle to strengthen the electoral law, particularly with regard to the conduct of party primaries and electoral dispute-resolution

mechanisms. It should also clarify leadership and integrity requirements so that prospective candidates understand the requirements to run for office well in advance of the polls. In addition, parliament should clearly define the respective roles of the IEBC and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission in determining whether candidates have met these eligibility criteria.

Separate from the final report, The Carter Center recently conducted a review of decisions from the High Court and the Court of Appeals on challenges to the results of the 2017 elections.

The Center found that lower courts have inconsistently applied the legal reasoning in the Supreme Court’s Sept. 1 decision to annul the Aug. 8, 2017, presidential election. This is especially true when considering whether alleged irregularities were “substantial” enough to warrant the annulling of an election without consideration of the results.

The inconsistent application of the Supreme Court’s ruling threatens to create a situation where the threshold for annulling elections in Kenya is so low that the will of the people as expressed through the ballots cast could become a secondary consideration.

As of this month, there are 14 election petitions pending before the Supreme Court. The resolution of these cases may bring some clarity and consistency to the interpretation of the Elections Act (specifically, Article 83) and the Supreme Court ruling that pertain to the annulation of election results.

Following the election, the Center recommended that parliament amend the election law to clarify that election results should only be annulled when irregularities are of a sufficient magnitude to affect the outcome. The Supreme Court addressed this issue in its recent rulings and indicated that such a step would require a constitutional amendment. The Kenyan government should give this option serious consideration to bring its dispute-resolution framework into alignment with best practices across the continent.

The Carter Center in Kenya: The Center’s final election report is based on the reporting of Carter Center experts and long-term observers on the ground from April through November 2017. The Carter Center team monitored key parts of the electoral process, including the party primaries and candidate nominations, voter verification, campaigning, electoral preparations, and electoral dispute resolution. The core team of experts was joined by a large group of short-term observers to monitor voting, counting, and tallying in the days surrounding the Aug. 8 election. Because the Oct. 26 rerun election was marked by increased insecurity, an uncertain political environment, and an opposition boycott, the Center deployed a smaller, limited observation mission, which did not cover all areas of the country. The Center also deployed experts from February to August 2018 to discuss information and communications technology, legal reform, and women and youth participation recommendations with electoral stakeholders. The Center assessed the court decisions on electoral petitions challenging the results in down-ballot races and women and youth participation in the 2017 elections. Reports with findings and recommendations on these issues are forthcoming.

Police Raids Topstar Casino Associated With Ruto Arresting 20 Chinese Immigrants

Detectives last night raided Topstar Casino located at Adlife Plaza in Kilimani and arrested twenty Chinese citizens. The Casino which is linked with Ruto becomes the latest victim on the crackdown on aliens most of whom are in the country illegally and engaging in illicit businesses.

The operation was done with utmost secrecy. Across the town, a similar raid was done at Nextgen Mall and several Chinese citizens arrested. Currently they’re being held at Kilimani police station where they’re making frantic calls. They’re wondering how there point man despite holding high office has not been able to help them.

Crackdown on illegal immigrants is currently ongoing. Police have arrested 31 aliens in various operations as the purge on illegal immigrants gathers pace. In the swoop, 25 Sudanese, two Ugandans, two Egyptians and two Nigerians were seized in Uasin Gishu County.

28 immigration staff have also been sacked for engaging in illegal transactions as the government moves to seal loopholes in acquisition of critical government documents.

Matiang’i had issued a directive ordering foreigners working in the country without official work permits to get documentation or be arrested at the lapse of 60 days, saying the move will help the government get rid of tax evaders and criminals.

He explained that illegal migrants with fake working permits come to the country as tourists but take advantage of immigration loopholes to engage in business activities which are against the law.

Some of those so far deported were engaging in jobs that can be done by Kenyans. Interior CS Fred Matiang’i gave national security teams and the Immigration department until the end of November to deport all foreigners in the country illegally.

On August 27, 2018, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, along with four other senior U.S. Government officials and 30 U.S. business executives, met with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and announced over $850 million in public and private commercial deals and engagements. For details, please see the U.S.-Kenya Commercial Announcements Fact Sheet.

The meeting was hosted by the Business Council for International Understanding and focused on the opportunities for expanding trade and investment between the United States and Kenya.

“Kenya is open for business, and all we want to do is package our partnership in a way that it is mutually beneficial to you as a private sector and the people of Kenya,” President Kenyatta said during the meeting.

Secretary Ross underscored the value of partnering with American companies and the United States Government by saying, “When you do business with American companies, you start a virtuous cycle of success on both sides of the Atlantic. You can be assured that there are no back-door deals, and no shady financing. The U.S. government is supporting U.S. companies as they seek to expand their engagements with your country. You have a true partner in the United States.”

The $850 million in deals and engagements announced includes the intention of the U.S. Government and Government of Kenya to collaborate on a $500 million project to develop a nationwide integrated digital information and communications technology infrastructure for the Government of Kenya. The collaboration will involve engaging and supporting American companies to provide the project solutions. This will be the first project for intended collaboration under the auspices of the new Kenya-U.S. Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to focus joint efforts by the governments on developing infrastructure and priority projects to support President Kenyatta’s “Big Four” development agenda. The MOU was signed during the June 2018 visit to Kenya of members of the U.S. President’s Advisory Council on Doing Business in Africa (PAC-DBIA), which was led by Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Gilbert Kaplan.

Other U.S. Government announcements include three investments by the Overseas Private Investment Corporation to support food security ($5 million loan to Twiga Foods), affordable housing ($50 million loan to Acorn Housing), and renewable energy ($233 million loan to Kipeto Energy) in Kenya, along with new initiatives by the U.S. Trade and Development Agency to improve Kenyan public procurement practices and connect American private sector solutions providers with Kenyan authorities seeking to improve emergency management systems.

Private sector announcements include Boeing’s $46 million deal with Kenya Airways to provide spare parts and on-demand servicing, Kenya Komposites’ $15 million investment to establish a manufacturing facility in Kenya for housing and infrastructure construction materials, and Kentegra’s $4 million investment to revitalize Kenya’s pyrethrum sector.

Combined with the announcement that Kenya Airways will soon launch non-stop direct flights between Nairobi and New York City, the commercial successes announced today build on the enhanced commercial engagement between the United States and Kenya that was ushered in via the June 2018 PAC-DBIA visit to Kenya. With the signing of $100 million in deals and the new Kenya-U.S. MOU during that trip, Secretary Ross referred to it as “a clear signal of our commitment to being a strong, long-term, and stable partner in Kenya’s economic development,” a signal that has been amplified via President Kenyatta’s visit to the United States.

Diplomatic Standoff: Uganda Government Demands Apology From Kenya Over Anti Bobi Wine’s Protests

Uganda Government through the East African Affairs ministry has written to the parliament of Kenya demanding that its legislators apologise for allegedly abusing Uganda President Yoweri Museveni.

Kenyan lawmakers including Jared Okelo (Nyando), Babu Owino (Embakasi East) and Gideon Keter (nominated) of the Kenya Young Parliamentarians Association said they would first stage a protest against the arrest and torture of Bobi Wine at the Ugandan embassy in Kenya before escalating it into Uganda.

Now, the ruling party lawmakers in Uganda are demanding that action be taken against the Kenyan MPs for what they called meddling into the affairs of a sovereign state.

East African Affairs state minister Julius Maganda Wandera told the parliamentary committee on East African Community Affairs yesterday that ‘action’ had already been taken against the Kenyan MPs.

Unsatisfied by the minister’s verbal ‘action taken’ statement, Rukiga Woman MP Caroline Kamusiime Muhwezi insisted on knowing what action had been taken against the MPs, whom she said used abusive language to the person of the President of Uganda, which to her was unacceptable.

“After the recent protests, the Kenyans including MPs came out and abused our president but nothing was done by the ministry. They were demanding our president to free Bobi Wine. Free Bobi Wine, as who?” Kamusiime said.

The legislators are now threatening that if the Kenyan parliament does not take action against the legislators, the ministry would not hesitate reaching Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta for redress.
