Experts On What Could Save Africa From Coronavirus

Experts have warned against any complacency in Africa, although the coronavirus pandemic has so far produced relatively few reported deaths on the continent.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Deputy Director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Ahmed Ogwell Ouma said the quick response by different countries and less mobility of people in the continent has so far saved the continent.

“Africa is different because we started acting quickly. When we saw the pandemic spreading, we began to prepare. And governments began to put in place mechanisms to identify those who may have the disease, to test them and to follow up those who may have been exposed,” he said.

Ouma said due to past experiences that have devoured many lives in African countries, they started early, unlike much privileged European and American counterparts.

He said the less mobility of people and the absence of a rapid transport system also made a difference.

“The second difference is that in Africa the modes of travel as not the same as the rest of the world. Someone in Addis Ababa is unlikely to go outside the city frequently. And the modes of transport are poor. In other parts of the world, air travel is the most common means. And people travel quite frequently, which also made the virus to travel fast,” said Ouma.

He, however, cautioned that it was not time to celebrate as the continent is not completely out of danger.

“We must remain vigilant to make sure we do not have many infected people. It will be a disaster in the continent, “he said.

The top expert also complained that lockdown across the continent has also affected medical and other supplies. He said there was a need to start solidarity flights to transport supplies.

Of the five regions in Africa, northern Africa has taken over southern Africa as the most affected both in terms of cases and deaths. According to U.S.-based John Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Centre, Egypt has so far reported 3,490 infected cases with 264 deaths, while South Africa registered 3,465 cases and 58 deaths.

    East Africa least affected

East Africa has been least affected so far. Djibouti, with a population of 958,920 has registered 945 cases, while its neighbor Ethiopia with 110 million population has so far 114 confirmed cases.

Like all over the world, Africa is also likely to witness a sharp decline in productivity, loss of jobs and revenues to the pandemic.

“As engines and drivers of economic growth, cities face considerable risks in light of COVID-19 with implications for the continent’s resilience to the pandemic,” said Thokozile Ruzvidzo director of the Gender, Poverty and Social Policy Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

“The effects are likely to be severe in urban areas. The urban economy [manufacturing and services] currently account for 64% of GDP in Africa,” said Ruzvidzo.

Firms and businesses in African cities are highly vulnerable to COVID-19 related effects, especially SMEs which account for 80% of employment in Africa.

“Additionally, urban consumption and expenditure [on food, manufactured goods, utilities, transport, energy, and services] are likely to experience a sharp fall in light of COVID-related lockdowns and reduced restrictions,” he said.

Sonko’s Automated Sanitization Booths Vandalized And Puts Blame On PS Kibicho

Nairobi Governor Sonko is once again back in the limelight with public spat with Interior PS Karanja Kibicho. This follows vandalism on the automated sanitization booths that he has been erecting across the city mainly in populated public areas.

Somko through his organization SRT has been distributing relief food, fumigating the streets and estates since the start of the pandemic. His latest project has been the booths. They were brought down on the instructions of the PS as Sonko alleges.

“I am saddened by the vandalism that occurred earlier today supervised by the Kibra Deputy County Commissioner allegedly with instructions from the Nairobi Regional Coordinator who also confirmed the removal of the new public sanitization booth installed at the Kibra DCC’s offices.” Sonko said.

Somko is placing the blame on competitors whom he alleges had placed bids to supply the state with the booths at inflated prices while himself doing it freely. “Cartels who wanted to supply public sanitation booths at an exaggerated cost to the Government are not happy with SonkoRescueTeam which is an NGO and is installing the same FOR FREE in all public places hence the vandalism order by Nairobi Regional Coordinator.” He points out.

“Watu wangu no matter what it takes I’ll never give up. This isn’t the time to play petty politics but to come together and do whatever it takes to tame the COVID-19 pandemic. Nobody is immune to this disease, including those who do not want the public to be assisted to stay safe. What they don’t know is that I’m still the Governor of Nairobi County sworn in to defend and protect the great people of Nairobi and the constitution.” He assured.

A member of SRT fumigating the estates.

Sonko is not relenting and going ahead to curse those whom he perceives to be behind his troubles and putting up spirited efforts to derail his philanthropy activities. “May the Lord punish all the senior gov’t officers at the O.P who gave instructions for the Kibra, Kencom and Buruburu sanitization booths erected by SonkoRescueTeam to be vandalised by Police.” He’s quoted.

A furious Sonko continued, “May those who’ve suspended our daily fumigation of estates & slums, distribution of food, masks & sanitizers burn in hell-fire including P.S Karanjakibicho & R.C Wilson Njega who’ve behaved like the brood of vipers which were condemned to hell in the book of Mathew 23:33. “You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?”

  • President Uhuru Speaks About Rent

    President Uhuru Speaks About Rent

Coronavirus has destabilized the economy and many people have either lost their income with job cuts or have their salaries trimmed down as corporates struggle with the losses.

Its not known how long this disaster will go and with only 40 days into it, things are already getting stiff for the majority. In Kenya, the informal sector makes up for 70% of the workforce meaning all those are the jobs lost.

WHO is warning the the virus could further send underdeveloped countries into depression and deeper poverty.

In Nairobi and other major towns in the country, rent has become one of the biggest challenges with many landlords threatening tenants with evictions over unpaid dues. It has often been expected from the government to offer a stimulus plan that would cushion tenants for instance from the wrath of the landlords whom on the other end have to deal with banks in paying their mortgages.

While speaking on local radio stations on Wednesday, the President waded into the rent waiver debate, saying that the state respects private property and can only urge landlords to be humane by considering relief to tenants.

This leaves the struggling tenants in the mercy of their landlords. It has been suggested elsewhere that the two parties can have an agreement to postpone the bills and pay on a later date when things return to normalcy. A bill in senate to address the issue of debt alongside other economic cushions is still in the table.

  • Turkana County To Spend Sh667 Million To Combat Covid 19 Pandemic

Turkana County To Spend Sh667 Million To Combat Covid 19 Pandemic

Speaker Erastus Lokaale on Monday told journalists that the county assembly had approved the supplementary budget 2 which allocated shs 667,570,600 towards covid 19 emergency response.

Lokaale said he has forwarded the appropriation Bill to the Govenor for assent.

He said the funds had been allocated to the ministries of water, health and public service and disaster management.

The ministry of public service and disaster management would receive the lion’s share of shs 441, 231,000 to provide relief food to the vulnerable people.

“We made this decision because the majority of our people are poor so we needed to cushion them during this crisis,” said Lokaale.

The ministry of health was allocated shs 159,335,600 while the ministry of water was allocated shs 67 million.

The speaker said funds for health docket would be used to purchase essential commodities like facemasks, and completion of the Lodwar county referral hospital intensive care unit as well as the purchase of ventilators and other equipment.

Water was also identified as a key component and the funds would be used to enhance hygiene standards by ensuring boreholes are working and for water tankering in areas without water.

To ensure accountability, the county assembly of Turkana has formed an adhoc Committee to oversight the utilisation of funds meant to address the covid 19 pandemic.

Lokaale said hat the committee is keen to ensure that funds meant to fight the pandemic are not embezzled.

“We understand that in times of crisis like these people can use the opportunity to do funny things that is why we are very keen to ensure funds are utilised to help the wananchi as intended,” said Lokaale.

The ad-hoc committee which he leads includes deputy speaker Mike Ewoi, leader of majority Bethwel Kobongin, leader of minority Benedict Lokamar, Katilu MCA James Abei.

The assembly Committee on finance will soon be meeting to discuss proposals from the executive including reducing cess for small scale traders during the crisis.
Govenor Josphat Nanok last week said his government has come up with a raft of measures to protect the most affected by the corona virus crisis.

He said that the County Treasury will waive a total of Sh40.7m from agricultural produce cess, water distribution and drill services, health sector fees, educational institutions, liquor licensing, market fees and single business permits for salons, barber shops and restaurant and entertainment facilities that is contained in the Turkana County Finance Amendment Bill 2020 as an additional measure to address COVID-19.

The Governor has also directed a tax exemption on market collection fees in the months of April, May and June to cushion the citizens, both traders and household water users from the loss arising from COVID-19.

Governor Nanok who was addressing the media with other County leaders at the new County HQ complex said that the County will clear eligible pending bills worth Sh90 Million within one month to “improve liquidity and ensure businesses remain operational.”

  • Netflix Subscribers Surge By 16 Million

Netflix Subscribers Surge By 16 Million

(AFP) – Netflix on Tuesday reported soaring profits as subscriptions surged by almost 16 million at the streaming television service during lockdowns to slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

“After record subscriber additions, Netflix is and will continue to be the media company least impacted by COVID-19,” said eMarketer forecasting analyst Eric Haggstrom.

“Their business is a near perfect fit to a population that is suddenly housebound.”

Netflix made a profit of $709 million on revenue of $5.8 billion in the first three months of this year, while the number of paid subscribers grew by 15.7 million from the previous quarter to total nearly 183 million, according to earnings figures.

Strict confinement rules are keeping billions of people at home in a bid to curtail the outbreak, effectively providing an enormous captive audience to entertainment giants competing in the streaming market.

“We’re acutely aware that we are fortunate to have a service that is even more meaningful to people confined at home, and which we can operate remotely with minimal disruption in the short to medium term,” Netflix executives said in a letter to investors.

“Like other home entertainment services, we’re seeing temporarily higher viewing and increased membership growth.”

Netflix expects viewing and membership growth to decline as coronavirus concerns abate and people can move about more freely.

The streaming firm expects a net increase of 7.5 million paid subscriptions in the current quarter to June but said: “Given the uncertainty on home confinement timing, this is mostly guesswork.”

    – Turbulent times –

The California-based company said that the long-term effects of job losses due to the coronavirus crisis on Netflix’s revenue remain unclear. The US alone has lost 22 million jobs since mid-March.

“In our 20+ year history, we have never seen a future more uncertain or unsettling,” Netflix executives said.

The company’s shares danced fractionally around their closing price in after-market trades that followed the release of the earnings report.

While the coronavirus crisis revved up membership growth, it has also strengthened the US dollar, offsetting revenue gains.

“Netflix faces some headwinds moving forward from a poor economic environment,” Haggstrom said.

“But a significant chunk of consumer entertainment budgets have been opened up from the closures of movie theaters, sporting events, restaurants and bars.”

    – Sidelined shows –

Another effect has been the shutdown of show production that has postponed expenses.

“We’ve paused most of our productions across the world in response to government lockdowns and guidance from local public health officials,” Netflix said.

“No one knows how long it will be until we can safely restart physical production in various countries, and, once we can, what international travel will be possible.”

Streaming television service competitors are in the same situation, but Netflix has a library with thousands of titles and an array of show launches ready for release, its executives noted.

“Our member satisfaction may be less impacted than our peers’ by a shortage of new content, but it will take time to tell,” Netflix said.

The Walt Disney Company in early April said its television streaming service had already won 50 million paid subscribers just five months after its launch in the US.

Disney+ subsequently rolled out in India and eight western European countries as well.

“I have been so impressed with Disney+ execution; my hat is off to them,” Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings said in an earnings presentation.

“Are we kicking up our kids and family animation? You bet. We are both going to do good work.”

The major challenge for Netflix and other leading streaming subscription services, in particular Disney+, will be “not just attracting new subscribers after lockdown, but perhaps more importantly, retaining existing ones,” said Futuresource analyst David Sidebottom.

  • Covid19-19: Hackers Strike and Leak Bill Gates, WHO, and Wuhan Lab Emails

Covid19-19: Hackers Strike and Leak Bill Gates, WHO, and Wuhan Lab Emails

Anonymous hackers successfully hacked accounts belonging to Bill Gates, the WHO, and a lab in Wuhan believed to be the location researching coronavirus that received funding from Dr. Fauci.

The event appears to have taken place on or about April 20th.

Netizens have taken to activism and people are logging in via SSH and downloading the contents of these hacks. This means that many people will be combing through the hacked documents with a fine-toothed comb.

Hackers apparently looking for the truth behind the coronavirus outbreak have allegedly hacked the World Health Organization, the Wuhan biolab and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. A set of huge databases containing usernames and passwords has been leaked.

    What are hackers looking for?

Many are speculating that the Gates Foundation is linked to the research of “gain of function”. This describes a function where scientists add deadly features to a virus. It was outlawed in the US back in 2015 by a moratorium and research was all migrated to Wuhan, Dr. Fauci funneled nearly $4 million USD to complete his research.

COVID-19 was ostensibly made in a lab. French Nobel prize winning scientist Luc Montagnier are publicly alleging that this is the case. According to him, there’s no possibility of this virus occurring naturally. It has the “insertion points” of 3 different viruses. That means it is a chimera of 3 separate diseases combined into 1 coronavirus.

In an interview given to French CNews channel and during a podcast by Pourquoi Docteur, professor Montagnier who co-discovered HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) claimed the presence of elements of HIV in the genome of the coronavirus and even elements of the “germ of malaria” are highly suspect, according to a report in Asia Times.

    https://www.livemint.com/news/world/nobel-winning-scientist-claims-covid-19-virus-was-man-made-in-wuhan-lab-11587303649821.html

Thousands of emails, passwords, & documents have been said to have been leaked online. Screenshots of documents, emails, and their credentials are currently on the open web, even on Twitter.

A Christian hacker group known as Katehon is said to have had hacked Gates Foundation data and relayed this to another hacker group, USA Hackers. USA Hackers used the data to hack WHO, Wuhan Lab and the CDC, and promises more leaks.

    https://twitter.com/usahackers/status/1252654398888644609?s=21

Unconfirmed reports include that satanic witch Marina Abramovic’s email was also hacked.

There is a history of Microsoft/Gates accounts being hacked, so this would not be unprecedented, nor impossible.

The Atlantic Council controlled publication of the Deep State – Vice Magazine – seems also to have confirmed the story.

For reasons only understandable to those following the broader establishment narrative, Vice has made this about the ‘far right’ and ‘neo-nazis’, terrorism, and so-called accelerationism.

A data dump of what appears to be the email addresses and passwords of members of the Gates Foundation, World Health Organziation (WHO), Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and a virology center based in Wuhan, China, is circulating within a network of neo-Nazi extremists.

The data dump and circulation appears to be an attempt at intimidating several of the leading government and non-governmental groups currently leading the fight against the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, though it’s likely many of the emails and passwords are outdated.

Judging specifically from a list of the data obtained by Motherboard, it appears like this may be an aggregation of previously-hacked usernames and passwords that was compiled from a previous data breach, though Motherboard cannot say for sure at the moment where the list comes from and how it was compiled. Motherboard ran a series of the email addresses through the website haveibeenpwned.com, which compiles data breaches, and found that each of the addresses we tested have previously been part of known data breaches. Many of them were also confirmed by the site to have been circulated in large aggregated lists of usernames and passwords tracked by the site.

In recent weeks, far-right extremists have become particularly enamoured with sowing disinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic, stoking protests and anti government sentiment in hopes of creating social chaos. Many experts have openly warned that “accelerationists”—followers of violent political doctrine calling for terrorist actions to hasten the collapse of society—have seen an opportunity in the current pandemic to test already weakened governments that are struggling to contain the virus.

Scientist Who Discovered HIV Says Coronavirus Is Man Made

Editor’s note – SARS-COV-2 is the technical name of the novel coronavirus purported to cause covid-19

French Nobel prize winning scientist Luc Montagnier has sparked a fresh controversy by claiming that the SARS-CoV-2 virus came from a lab, and is the result of an attempt to manufacture a vaccine against the AIDS virus.

“The Wuhan city laboratory has specialized in these coronaviruses since the early 2000s. They have expertise in this area,” he was quoted as saying.

The theory that Covid-19 virus originated in the lab is making rounds for quite some time.

US President Donald Trump last week acknowledged Fox News report that the novel coronavirus may have been accidentally leaked by an intern working at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China.

The Fox News, in an exclusive report, based on unnamed sources has claimed that though the virus is a naturally occurring strain among bats and not a bioweapon, but it was being studied in Wuhan laboratory.

The initial transmission of the virus was bat-to-human, the news channel said, adding that the “patient zero” worked at the laboratory. The lab employee was accidentally infected before spreading the disease among the common people outside the lab in Wuhan city.

Professor Montagnier was awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize in Medicine for the identification of AIDS virus, with his colleague professor Françoise Barre-Sinoussi.

His fresh claim on coronavirus, however, received criticism from scientists, including his colleagues.

“Just in case you don’t know. Dr Montagnier has been rolling downhill incredibly fast in the last few years. From baselessly defending homeopathy to becoming an antivaxxer. Whatever he says, just don’t believe him,” tweeted Juan Carlos Gabaldon.

As per a recent Washington Post, two years ago, the US embassy officials in China raised concerns about the insufficient biosafety at the Chinese government’s Wuhan Institute of Virology where deadly viruses and infectious diseases are studied.

Though the institute, located quite close to the Wuhan wet market, is China’s first biosafety level IV lab, the US state department had warned in 2018 about “serious shortage of appropriately trained technicians and investigators needed to safely operate this high-containment laboratory”

  • Nelson Havi: DCI To Put Blogger Nyakundi In Forced Quarantine

Nelson Havi: DCI To Put Blogger Nyakundi In Forced Quarantine

There’s an exchange of fire online if you’re active on Twitter then you must have noticed it. This follows a notice given on DCI’s Twitter against blogger Nyakundi over an impending arrest. “#WANTED| Mr. Cyprian Andama Nyakundi is WANTED by the @DCI_Kenya Regional Criminal Investigations Office – Nairobi following the issuance of a warrant of arrest in respect of him from the Chief Magistrate’s Court Milimani after he failed to attend Court as expected.” The tweet reads.

Nyakundi has been arrested for posting on his twitter page that the KRA boss had traveled abroad and rained to self quarantine on his return.

Nyakundi would later be released on a police bond. He had been accused for Publication of False Information Contrary to Section 23 of the Computer Misuse and Cyber Crime Act.

Courts like many other public institutions, have been working from home following directives by the CJ David Maraga. LSK President Nelson Havi, however protested this and asked for an open court sessions.

On Tuesday, the CJ ruled out the possibilities of resuming and allowing open sessions cori g dangers posed to vulnerable judicial officers and eruption of spread of coronavirus.

And now with Nyakundi’s case hitting the limelight, the LSK Chair Havi jumped to his defense, while replying to the DCI’s public summon, Havi said, “How is he supposed to have attended a Court that is not open but operates digitally from home? The Magistrate doesn’t want to be infected. Police cells are full to the brim. Guess where they will take him upon arrest? Forced quarantine! How does that solve the problem?”

Blogger Nyakundi on the other hand, defended himself in the court of public opinion that the DCI put him in, “1. Never been processed to appear before Milimani Law Courts. I know before you appear in court for plea taking in criminal matters, there must be fingerprints etc. Nothing! Arrest warrant shocking.” He stated.

He continued, “I’d like @DCI_Kenya, @ODPP_KE and @dkmaraga to investigate how a warrant of arrest has been issued against me yet I have never been processed to appear at the Milimani law courts for plea over a post that a KRA manager died of Covid19.”

“The alleged story of a KRA manager that died of #Covid19 was also done by other media houses including @Kenyans @dailynation etc but now Nyakundi is the focus. This is harassment. Even Nyakundi has rights.” Reads part of his tweets.

“The KRA matter that I was also accused of sharing about is currently active at the Kibera law courts. The process was followed (Fingerprints, statements etc).” He opined.

The tussle has now degenerated into an only exchange for two camps, you can do a search on Twitter about Nyakundi and see the results and the general views.

  • Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Hints at Filling a Lawsuit Against China on The Consequences Of Covid-19

Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Hints at Filling a Lawsuit Against China on The Consequences Of Covid-19

China’s troubles are far from starting, while the country where the virus originally emanated from hence referred to as Wuhan/China virus boasts of having contained Covid19, the worst could just be starting for them.

China whose official figures remain under 4,000 despite accusations that they covered up the true figures, has its normal lives back in track but the world is not buying.

Germany, recently through a newspaper memo, threatened to sue the Chinese government for compensation for upto $162B. It’s not just Germany eyeing this. Suburban NYC County has also sued the Chinese government and the WHO for conspiring to escalate the pandemic by disclosing crucial information to contain the virus.

There have been suggestions by experts to have Chinese government to pay for the huge loses cost to economies especially to the struggling Africa’s.

In Kenya, major economic pillars like tourism and agriculture has literally ground to an halt. As a mitigation measure, most firms have worthier closed down or reverted to working from home.

In America, over 25 million have already been rendered jobless and applied for unemployment benefits. The state of Missouri through their Attorney General, Eric Schmitt, is filling a lawsuit against Chinese government for causing severe economic consequences in the state.

“COVID-19 has done irreparable damage to countries across the globe, causing sickness, death, economic disruption, and human suffering. In Missouri, the impact of the virus is very real – thousands have been infected and many have died, families have been separated from dying loved ones, small businesses are shuttering their doors, and those living paycheck to paycheck are struggling to put food on their table,” said Attorney General Schmitt. “The Chinese government lied to the world about the danger and contagious nature of COVID-19, silenced whistleblowers, and did little to stop the spread of the disease. They must be held accountable for their actions.”

Kenya’s SC Ahmednasir Abdullahi who has been openly vocal about Chinese capture and destruction of the Kenyan economy, hinted at the closest possibility of pursuing the case and suing China Fr the sane consequences. “The FIRST OFFICIAL LAWSUIT by a STATE in America against China on the cause and consequences of the Coronavirus…more will follow all over the world…and I’M CAREFULLY studying the relevant laws…” He hinted.

Ahmednasir has not been mincing his words and a largely suspicions of China, “From masks to testing machines and even VENTILATORS, CHINA has flooded the world with faulty third rate and fake equipment…it’s in the DNA.” He noted.

chinas billionaire Jack Ma took to his Twitter yo announce about a 3rd batch of medical supplies donation to Africa and once again the vocal lawyer didn’t mince his words, “I just hope the quality and standards are up there.” There have been cases where medical supplies from China were found to be contaminated with coronavirus as in the case of UK and being substandard as in Spain where they were returned.

Its only time that will tell how the SC will go and how hard he will punch.

Barcelona FC Is Giving Up Their Stadium Name Camp Nou To Raise Money For The Fight Against Coronavirus

Spanish football powerhouse Barcelona will give a sponsor naming rights to the Camp Nou stadium for the first time to raise funds for the fight against coronavirus, the club announced on Tuesday.

In a statement, the club said its board of directors has “approved the ceding of the title rights to Camp Nou for the season 2020-2021 to the Barca Foundation to raise money to invest in research projects being carried out in Catalonia and the rest of the world involved in the fight against the effects of COVID-19.”

The foundation will now look for a sponsor who will be able to rename the Camp Nou stadium for one season – the first time in the iconic venue’s over six-decade history.

Camp Nou, which has a capacity of nearly 99,000, has been Barcelona’s home since 1957.

Commercializing stadium names through sponsorship deals has been a rising trend worldwide in recent years as it allows clubs to generate extra revenue.

Europe, along with the U.S., is the hardest-hit area in the world in the coronavirus pandemic.

Spain has the highest number of cases – over 204,100 – on the continent and its death toll of more than 21,200 is behind only the U.S. and Italy.

More than 2.5 million cases have been reported in 185 countries and regions since the virus emerged in China last December, with the death toll close to 172,000 and nearly 660,000 recoveries, according to data compiled by the U.S.’ Johns Hopkins University.

  • Investment Guru: Strong Dollar Won’t Survive The Coronavirus Pandemic

Investment Guru: Strong Dollar Won’t Survive The Coronavirus Pandemic

The U.S. dollar will not continue its current strength as both the government deficit and its monetary policies pose great dangers to the currency, a prominent international investor warned on Tuesday.

“So far the dollar has been very strong against some currencies, up more than 20% this year, against the Brazilian real and Mexican pesos, but if you look at the fiscal deficit of the U.S. and all the money printing, I just can’t believe that it will continue to be strong,” Marc Faber, a Swiss investor said.

The dollar could be strong for another 10 days or so, but in the long run, the U.S. monetary policies are dangerous and negative for the currency, he added.

Saying that to date emerging markets have not rallied a great deal in the current crisis, he said there is a window of opportunity for the next two to three months to make some money in emerging markets, including in Turkey.

    Bankruptcies

On the pandemic’s economic impact, Marc Faber said interventions by governments to stem the crisis will have serious effects.

Western economies already faced serious problems before the virus hit, he said, and now with the coronavirus crisis things will get worse, he added.

“The U.S. Fed started intervening in the repo market starting from September of last year. Then the coronavirus came and we had this huge intervention, monetary and fiscal measures,” he related.

“That is cushioning the recession and depression, but I think after all the restrictions are lifted, a lot of businesses won’t be opening, a lot of people will go bankrupt and companies will default.”

Stating that the global economy system will change drastically after the pandemic is under control, Faber said that airline revenues plunged 95%.

He added that this situation will improve when international flight service resumes, but the previous high levels may be out of reach.

Some people will think they no longer need to travel and would prefer to talk by video link rather than face-to-face visits with customers, he predicted.

“People’s behavior will change,” he said

Stating that economies in the wake of the virus will have new winners and losers, Faber said: “Platforms such as Amazon, Netflix, and Zoom have won. [Brick-and-mortar] retailers are losers.”

“Some big retailers will never be able to open their shutters again,” he predicted.

Again: Ruth Matete Grilled For Hours by The DCI Over Husband’s Death

There’s a looming war with justice, DCI detectives today questioned musician Ruth Matete for hours over the death of her husband John Apewajoye.

This would be the third time she’s being grilled and perhaps the longest. Initially, it was the normal reporting of the events that transpired. She had told the police that her late husband had suffered severe burns after a gas cylinder exploded in the balcony.

Ruth who’s said to be 2-months pregnant, has however run into more trouble with accusations that this wasn’t a normal death but that she had a hand in it.

This followed a viral video that was posted by a man in Nigeria claiming to have been the manager of the late. In his recording, he sensationally pointed fingers at the gospel singer alleging that she was violent towards the husband and could’ve had something to do with his death.

He quoted third parties, some of whom were first responders and helped taking John to the hospital as confirming that Ruth had a hand. He asked the Nigerian embassy to follow up the case to determine the true cause of death.

The body has been held at KNH morgue awaiting for instructions from the embassy whom have now given the go ahead and a post-mortem scheduled for Thursday.

The Tuesday intense grilling raises more concerns as to the loopholes that the DCI might have gathered after visiting her house last week. But for sure there’s a developing story.

Panic In Parliament: A Tanzanian MP Tests Positive For Coronavirus

A Tanzanian member of parliament has tested positive for coronavirus, triggering calls for a suspension of on-going House sessions.

Without naming the politician, Deputy Speaker Tulia Ackson said the MP had travelled to the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, the country’s epicentre of infections.

She believes that is where the MP contracted the virus.

Parliament’s sessions started three weeks ago, albeit with fewer MPs in the chamber, shorter hours of discussions and some debates held over video conferencing facilities.

Speaker Job Ndugai has defended reconvening amid the epidemic, arguing that the country’s important operations must continue.

Mr Ndugai, together with President John Magufuli, have disapproved of stricter measures such as a lockdown to curb the spread of the virus in the country.

But some politicians want parliament to be suspended to allow for disinfection of the chamber and testing of all MPs to identify and quarantine those who may be infected.

“There shall be no two set of laws – for MPs and for the people. All MPs should be isolated, tested and contact-traced. Right from the beginning we advised that the parliament sessions should not be held. It’s dangerous,” said Zitto Kabwe, an opposition MP and leader of the ACT-Wazalendo party

Another opposition MP, Upendo Peneza, previously suggested a lockdown for Dar es Salaam city to curb the spread of coronavirus.

“Because Dar es Salaam has the largest number of cases, people from there shouldn’t be allowed to go to other places so as to stop the spread of the infection to other regions. Only movement of basic goods and services should be allowed,” said Ms Peneza said in parliament.

The total number of coronavirus cases in Tanzania now stands at 254 and 10 deaths, with the virus spreading into close to half of regions of the country.

  • Africa: The ‘New World Order’ – A Chance for Africa?

Africa: The ‘New World Order’ – A Chance for Africa?

    GUEST COLUMN

For decades, Africa has struggled to find its way in a process of globalization and being led by money powers with, as a consequence, an increasing widening of inequalities: more prosperity for a tiny minority and  more poverty for the greatest number.

The world seems to be moving towards progressive dehumanization.  The achievement of man is no longer the major concern, but the strengthening of capital through an endless accumulation appears as the priority objective.

Like a machine out of control, the world of men has run into a frantic race for more profit.  It is a race led by men who will themselves be forgotten at the end of each transformation process.

Production is localized with the objective of seeking productivity and profitability gains.  Profit sites become the centers of creation of world wealth, a force for good which would be best shared for the greatest happiness of humanity.

I wish through this reflection, and in these difficult times that cross all the nations, to challenge Africa, through its leaders and our Union (the African Union) through its members, to play as a continent in its own right.  I should say as an African Nation.

At the moment when a new world is being built before our eyes, giving birth to a new world order, the Africa we love so much must be a leading player in this process.  I mean as an actor and not spectator.  United Africa should not only claim this place but also take charge of it if necessary!

I would like to quote President Emmanuel Macron in his speech of April 13 “it is our responsibility to build solidarity today, new cooperations”.  I understand here the “responsibility” in the inclusive sense of the term (African leaders), because he had just spoken in other words marked by sincerity, of the need “to help Africa at the economic level with a massive cancelation of debt”.  This posture of President Macron is to be commended for its fair value.  It is up to African leaders to play their full role by speaking with one voice, that of Africa, the one that our youth expect.  With all the assets now in hand, we must not desert the youth who are watching us!

Africa has it’s say in this new globalization, in this globalization of the economy.  Some silver lining!  The present and especially the coming times will certainly be among the saddest and perhaps the most heartbreaking in the history of mankind, but with great hope that a new world, full of hope and renewal will open up.  Humanity is seized with doubt, because of an invisible virus which is crossing the world to sow desolation. “Powerful” countries compete for leadership with poor countries every night at the announcement of the daily results and the gruesome ravages of the disease on a planetary scale.

The gap between rich and poor countries is suddenly “bridged” because the consequence is the same for all rich and poor. The solution so far has not been found and the powerlessness of the people continues to assert itself every day.

I said that Africa has a say, yes!  Africa has its say. Africa must act here and now, with full responsibility, taking its full place, relieved of this burden of an inferiority complex.  Africa will no longer have this alibi, after this period in the contemporary history of peoples, to make it clear that everything that happens to it is due to others … Africa is facing its destiny.  This is where the idea of an African Nation through all-African solidarity will make sense.

Africa must think quickly and well.  It has the means, the skills and the support of friendly countries around some major non-limiting issues.

    1. What will be the place of our continent in this new global socio-economic governance with a model that until now has just shown its limits?  What governance at last will put the development of the HUMAN in the broad sense of the term at the heart of all concerns and not the development of the MAN in the individual sense.

According to reports from the World Bank and OXFAM, it is mentioned that because of the novel coronavirus pandemic, Sub-Saharan Africa:

    • is moving towards its first recession in 25 years;

    • growth should retract between 2019 and 2020, going from 2.4% to a range between -2.1% and -5.1%;

    • the contraction of agricultural production will be between 2.6% and 7% (trade deadlock scenario) with losses between 37 and 79 billion dollars in 2020;

    • an unprecedented food crisis

    • a decline of 10 or even 30 years in the fight against poverty (OXFAM);

    • food imports will decrease by 13 to 25% (for countries which are not self-sufficient);

    • the disaster is that half a billion people could fall by the wayside

The G20 has just met, with all due respect to the G20 authorities, I fear that this will be another missed appointment with “56% of the total of the extremely poor people in the world” According to the last report  World Bank Triennial on “Extreme Poverty in the World” the reorganization and the relaxation of the conditions of payment of the debt do not have the same scope as the cancellation of the debt.

Faced with such an apocalyptic scheme, Africa expected from the G20 a bolder, unequivocal response to support the BUDGETARY effort of the States.  Several researchers and analysts have said this.  World Bank Vice President Hafez Ghanem calls official bilateral creditors to a debt service moratorium … to free up cash … and save lives.  I would say that you must dare to go further, towards debt cancellation as suggested by President Macky Sall alongside other African leaders, and as President Macron has just reiterated, so as not to be in a perpetual flight forward which will sooner or later overtake us.  We all know that the response to such a crisis can no longer be solely budgetary, whatever the will of the States.  Liquidity must be injected into the economies to support not only households in difficulty, but also businesses and the informal sector.  The informal sector in Africa, known to all, is one of the most important pillars in the fight against poverty in view of the structure of our social model.

If we want to restart the African economy in conditions of true resilience, all intellectuals know that canceling the debt is the ONLY ALTERNATIVE.  The Bretton Woods institutions (like the G20, moreover) should not set us on a different path by relying on all the instruments at their disposal.

This is why I welcome the initiative taken on April 13, 2020, by the IMF Board of Directors with debt relief for 25 countries, including 6 WAEMU countries, even if it remains insufficient (six months) pending the initiative launched to find the resources to complete for the next two years.  I question myself, however, on reading the full list of beneficiaries, and taking into account the time horizon (2 years), on the exclusion of Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal, for an initiative that wants to provide “subsidies to our poorest and most vulnerable members to cover their debts to the IMF”.  Let us hope that this exclusion will only concern the first 6 months at the risk of seeing a technical and democratic debate take place around the relevance of this decision.

I do not deny the efforts made by the IMF in Senegal through the instruments which are the Rapid Facility Instrument (IFR) and the Rapid Credit Facility (FCR) for nearly 277 billion.  However, lightening is not synonymous with indebtedness even on milder and less restrictive conditions in the provision.  The objective is not only to contain the shock, but to review the profile and the weight of the debt on our economies.  This will free up spaces in the hope of a real resilience of our weak economies to the resumption of economic activity.

Africa in general and the WAEMU countries in particular, today need a massive injection of liquidity, even with the risk of freeing up inflation in a responsible way, to support the productive sectors within the framework of activities.  We should take advantage of this to bring our health care system, that of education and RESEARCH, which we often tend to neglect to the point of pushing our researchers to expatriation.  Some countries were unable to provide emergency services (if any) with a minimum of respirators, masks and protective clothing for medical personnel, when orders in the north were made by the thousands.  I salute in passing the great sacrifice and highly civic behavior of the health personnel who worked in disastrous conditions to manage this pandemic.  These people who gave their lives to save that of others (in all countries of the world) deserve beyond the decorations (if they have any) to be cited as martyrs.

Africa and the world in general expect us to review this model of globalization which everyone knows has reached its limits.  And the most striking demonstration was given by the absence of immediate, coordinated and united responses to some of the most basic requests to fight this pandemic …… with the impossibility of satisfying urgent requests because excessive (regional) centralization of production by profit centers.  The consequence was an indescribable cacophony and an unprecedented state selfishness in the face of the suffering next door, despite all the supposed “benefits” of globalization that we have always been praised for.

For more justice, this economy integrated by globalization can no longer be a corridor arranged so that the search for prosperity for the smallest number is the only objective, even an unconscious one.

Profit centers should no longer be concentrated in a single region for the greatest benefit of the greatest number.

    2.  We need a new link with the Bretton Woods institutions to make their mode of intervention in the “weakest Nations” a little more flexible.

IMF initiatives such as IFR and FCR are to be welcomed.

The convergence criteria have been put to the test.  The dogmatism of the budget deficit at 3%, inflation at less than 3% in economies like ours, where we are under construction, faced with emergencies every day must remain the same even if we know, that faced with the crisis, the noose is a bit loose around the budget deficit.  Even if we know, the tempering effort of interest rates will certainly stimulate demand and keep businesses in a situation of controlled risk.

    3.  What new directions can we give to the United Nations specialized agencies for greater responsiveness even if we can give them the benefit of the doubt because of the spontaneity (suddenness) and the scale of the crisis.

A great deal of reflection must be carried out in this direction with far-reaching reforms on the side of the institutions, but also of the States, so that the latter, in the event of a divergence of interests for the benefit of the greatest number, that they have the latitude to suspend their State party obligation.

    4. Finally, we must pursue relationships of genuine friendship with the “Great Nations” by dismissing (putting on hold) the adage that “the Nations have no friends but only interests”.

  • Who Is Next In Line To Take The Throne From North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, Here’s Her Sister The World Is Talking About

Who Is Next In Line To Take The Throne From North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, Here’s Her Sister The World Is Talking About

The mystery surrounding Kim Jong Un’s health exposes deep uncertainty about North Korea’s line of succession more than eight years after he took power.

While the Kim family has ruled for seven decades by passing power between male heirs like other hereditary dynasties, the 36-year-old Kim has named no successor. His own children are still young and the ruling family’s surviving adults all face potential barriers to their rise.

    Here are some possible successors:

    Kim Yo Jong, Sister

North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un Visits The Monument to War Heroes and Martyrs And Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

Kim Yo Jong attends a wreath laying ceremony in Hanoi in 2019.

Part royal representative, part personal assistant, Kim Yo Jong has emerged as one of her older brother’s closest aides. Earlier this month, she was reinstated as an alternate Politburo member of the ruling Workers Party of Korea. As such, she’s the only other member of the Kim family with anything approaching real power in the regime.

Although she became the first member of the ruling family to visit Seoul and accompaniedKim Jong Un in his summits with U.S. President Donald Trump and China’s Xi Jinping, she’s also performed mundane tasks, such as helping the leader extinguish a cigarette during a train stop in China. Whether North Korea’s patriarchal elite will support a relatively young woman as the country’s next “supreme leader” is unclear.

    Kim Jong Un’s Son

A male heir would provide the most conventional line of succession in a dynasty previously ruled by Kim’s father, Kim Jong Il, and founded by his grandfather, Kim Il Sung. South Korean intelligence said Kim married Ri Sol Ju, a former singer, in 2009 and is thought to have three children.

Problem is, the children have yet to be officially mentioned in state media and the oldest is believed to be a son born in 2010, according to South Korea’s DongA Ilbo newspaper. Dennis Rodman, the offbeat former basketball star who visited North Korea, said in 2013 that he also held a baby daughter named Ju Ae. That would likely require any of the children to rule under some form of regent until they come of age.

    Kim Han Sol, Nephew

Kim Han Sol, born in 1995, may have become heir-apparent himself if his father, Kim Jong Nam, hadn’t fallen out with Kim Jong Il and gone into exile in the Chinese gambling hub of Macau. Kim Jong Nam was Kim Jong Un’s older half-brother and his most serious rival, frequenting casinos and occasionally criticizing his younger sibling’s regime.

    The family.

Any hopes that Kim Han Sol might have had of returning to Pyongyang were dashed in 2017, when his father was murdered at the Kuala Lumpur airport by two women who smeared VX nerve agent on his face. Chinese police later arrested several North Koreans dispatched to Beijing on suspicion of plotting to kill Kim Han Sol, South Korea’s JoongAng Ilbo newspaper reported at the time. His whereabouts remain unknown.

    Kim Jong Chol, Brother

Kim Jong Chol, Kim Jong Un’s only surviving brother, would be another longshot, since he has shown more interest in guitars than politics. Thae Yong Ho, the former No. 2 at North Korea’s embassy in London who defected to South Korea, once said Kim’s elder brother “doesn’t own any official title” adding he’s “just a really talented guitarist.”

Kim Jong Il saw his middle son as “girlish,” according to the person who goes by the pen name of Kenji Fujimoto and claims to have been the personal sushi chef for the former North Korean leader. In 2011, South Korean broadcaster KBS captured Kim Jong Chol enjoying an Eric Clapton concert in Singapore. Little else is known about him except that he studied in Switzerland and is a fan of U.S. professional basketball like his brother.

  • Dr. Misango: Covid-19 Is Not A Deadly Disease, It Has Been Made Deadly For A Reason

Dr. Misango: Covid-19 Is Not A Deadly Disease, It Has Been Made Deadly For A Reason

    By Dr. Samson Misango

Kenyans, let me remind you of my youth, a long way back, when I was a newly qualified doctor who would do everything according to how I was taught. We called it working according to the book.

The persons who wrote that book went by the names of Hutchinson, Bailey, Love, Anderson, Apleys, Schwartz, Moore, Ganong, Greenwood, Blackwood, Whitewood and all other wood colours you can imagine….

I think you get my drift..(if you don’t, maybe this post is not for you….????)

We were supposed to read the many westernised compilations these people wrote…and quote them as authorities on medical matters….and quote them we did, like the Bible.

We needed to, all the way from early medical school.

We had to satisfy some local and international examiners who believed in these same teachings for the senate to recommend us to continue to the next level of study, and ultimately recommend that we were deserving of being given powers to read and do all that appertains towards the award of our medical degrees

We received those medical degrees with a lot of pomp, glamour and glitz…relatives came to join us from the village in all manner of dressing and vehicles, carrying banana leaves, Christmas decorations, bibles and all other things our simple people celebrate achievements with.

Most of us went on to read as asked, but we forgot to do all that appertains towards that degree as empowered.

There was a certain pandemic disease at the time called HIV (they called it novel then). It was a scourge in the 90s, some people still consider it as such. (Poor misguided souls).

One of my most distressing moments as a young doctor in a ward round at the time was coming across a patient labeled as HIV positive. The patient would be neglected. Abandoned by relatives, friends and health care workers..let me explain….

We would dutifully and enthusiastically be treating a patient for TB or diarrhoea or severe pneumonia or meningitis or Malaria etc…until someone (usually an intern doctor at the instigation of the consultant) triumphantly displayed some positive HIV test results…then the mood would change…

The consultant would declare…”Wow, this disease is serious, it is finishing our people….we have to avoid it at all costs. You can see how it comes up everywhere and has frustrated all our treatments…Now, please do the necessary.”…

Which meant we do the barest minimum to maintain the patient comfort as the patient wasted away to a stigmatized and lonely death….we called it palliative care..but it was more of supervised neglect.

Many sincere doctors will relate to this dangerous situation where a patient is given a terminal illness and their condition then becomes terminal.

Patients diagnosed to be HIV positive rarely survived beyond 1 week after this ominous diagnosis (how could they, after health care workers, friends, relatives and the system gives up on them….?)

We would come across similar situations in mortality meetings where we discuss patients’ deaths and how they could be avoided. A patient being HIV positive was not considered a good patient for discussion because the death was a foregone conclusion…! A post mortem (after death) diagnosis of HIV for a complicated case resulted in many doctors having flash bulb moments..”oh…so that was it…”

It took me a while before I realized that many of these patients died with HIV, not of HIV. The HIV just stigmatized and jeopardised their treatment.

Health care workers are human beings…they are trained to deal with cases without feelings but feelings sometimes get in the way….feelings introduced by people who decide to introduce these feelings.

Fast track to later life ..I became a surgeon, many many years later. But my pathway there is a story for a another day. Let me not digress.

In ward rounds and medical interactions, I now discourage medical students, junior doctors or any other colleagues from informing me the HIV status of patients who are undergoing treatment for whatever condition. This is so even despite some donors making it mandatory for all hospitalised patients to be tested…they are collecting data for some joint government and donor funded research….one day we will be given the results…

Here we are now, with another pandemic called Covid-19 Coronavirus, that some people want us to believe is so deadly and that it is causing the death of many infected people.

Senior medical and non medical officials are all over telling all and sundry just how we have to avoid contracting this disease at all costs, going to the extent of deploying police to enforce public health measures to protect the public from contracting and transmitting the disease.

Any medical personnel, after looking at trends in different countries and studying our own trends, will tell you that this is a mild infection that most people will recover from without anything to talk about. We have however reacted to it with all manner of prescriptions aimed at stigmatising the infection….not for our own benefit but for the sake of fulfilling some donor requirements or prescription…(why else would we be reacting this way?)

Patients who are critically ill in hospitals or dying in ICU are being tested for Covid-19….if found positive, their treatment is going the old HIV way…stigma, isolation, quarantine etc…

Without downplaying the significance of Covid-19 to some groups of people, I have refused to let this highly infectious but mild disease take us where HIV took us…we lost our minds and followed the donors.

I was young then. I am now older, more self actualised and wiser.

There are many people.. scratch that…there are very many people who are Covid 19 positive. It is here with us and it will not go away. Widespread community antibody testing will soon show that….it is a simple, cheap and quick fingerprick blood test that picks out people who have previously been infected and recovered or are recovering, NOT NECESSARILY SICK.

It is not a test to diagnose Covid-19 positive patients who are actively sick to isolate, quarantine or treat….but some people will start doing that (little knowledge is very dangerous)

Being Covid 19 positive does not mean death and is not a reason to get stigmatized. Many people will die with Covid-19 and not due to Covid 19.

Some donor (Belinda Gates) has loudly broadcast that the true extent of the infection will be known after we do mass testing….they are concerned that we are not yet dropping like flies as predicted in their models.

The reason we are not dropping like flies is because so far, many deaths cannot be attributed to the virus since we are not doing mass testing…. otherwise…many deaths would be wrongly attributed to the infection.

Remember, we have many other diseases that kill us… daily. We have never stopped our country for them. Once mass testing starts, someone will want you to believe that Covid 19 is the cause of these deaths. Do not board. RESIST!

We have stopped our country for this unknown disease that has been overhyped by the press and used to fight a superpower economic war with China.

Do not allow it to convert you into headless chickens running around the country waiting for directions from more headless chickens.. following a script from some imperialists.

    Think…..Read…..Get informed.

Covid 19 is not a deadly disease…..it has been made deadly for a reason.

Do not spread panic about it…Do not justify draconian state measures towards containing a minor infection…we have more deadly infections to worry about.

Practice good basic hygiene to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.

  • Global Covid-19 Deaths Pass 170,000

    Global Covid-19 Deaths Pass 170,000

The number of deaths worldwide from the novel coronavirus surpassed 170,000 late Monday, according to a running tally by U.S.-based Johns Hopkins University.

The university’s data counted 170,042 fatalities while the number of cases and recoveries stood at 2,473,209 and 646,012, respectively.

The U.S. continues to be the worst-hit country, recording more than 784,500 cases and 42,138 deaths.

Italy has the second-highest death toll at 24,114, while Spain has the second highest number of cases with 200,210.

Overall, the virus has spread to 185 countries and regions since it first emerged in Wuhan, China in December.

Despite the rising number of cases, most people who contract the virus suffer mild symptoms before making a recovery. Kenya has 270 confirmed COVID-19 cases so far, with 14 deaths, and 67 recovery, according to figures compiled by the U.S.-based Johns Hopkins University.

  • The Kenyan Economy Is In A Crisis

The Kenyan economy is in a crisis. The coronavirus pandemic is affecting everyone regardless of their age, ethnicity, social status or profession.

Fishers along the Kenyan coast, who export seafood to Europe and China, say their trade has almost come to a halt since the past few weeks. Only 20% of their catch is being sold as they lack a market now.

“The closure of the Chinese export market has really affected us fishermen,” Ahmed Abdi, a fisherman from Malindi told Anadolu Agency. “There are local sales but for Kenyans fish is fish… they don’t care about the type… they would pay the same for salmon as they would for a rare tuna.”

He said sales from the local market could not meet his living expenses.

“We cannot depend on the local market… our main market was China, all our prices are set by the Chinese market,” he said. “Kenyans can’t afford expensive lobsters but China used to buy them in tons.”

Abdi said that the dusk to dawn curfew imposed to curb the spread of the virus has also affected them.

“The water temperature drops at night and from my 23-year experience, I can tell you it is the best time to fish,” he said.

Like the fishers, even farmers are bearing the brunt of the outbreak.

Producers in the East African country say they are already late for the planting season, and have warned that the country might face starvation in the coming months.

“We have a triple tragedy: one we have not planted so we face hunger if the rainy planting season ends, two there is the coronavirus…three we have a locust invasion, this is like hell for us farmers, it is like the end of times,” George Wetaba, a farmer in western Kenya told Anadolu Agency.

Wetaba said Kenya will suffer from food shortage if the government did not step in to assist them.

He pointed out that it is around April that most farmers plant locally-consumed foods but the entree supply chain has been impacted.

“From the seed vendors, people who supply fertilizers, those who deal in pesticides, and the ones who operate tractors… they have all been locked down… we have nothing to do or plant, we want the government help as soon as possible,” Wetaba said.

Ambrose Ngetich, an officer from the Food and Agriculture organization in Laikipia, Kenya, warned that the second wave of locusts might impede COVID-19 fighting measures put in place.

He said the curfew was affecting their efforts against the swarms.

Meanwhile, last week Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta announced $47 million for a newly-formed emergency fund, bringing the total amount sent to all 47 counties in the country to $94 million.

Kenya has 270 confirmed COVID-19 cases so far, with 14 deaths, and 67 recovery, according to figures compiled by the U.S.-based Johns Hopkins University.

  • Senator Wants China To Pay $100 Billion For Destroying The Kenyan Economy With Covid-19

Senator Wants China To Pay $100 Billion For Destroying The Kenyan Economy With Covid-19

Germany is currently trending after a newspaper sent a letter to China and in it demanding a compensation of $162 billion over the destruction caused by the virus.

The later put blame on China for not acting fast enough to curb the spread and lack of openness. The virus that originated in Wuhan, China has now clocked 2 million mark of infected people globally.

In Kenya, the virus has now infected 254 people and 14 already dead with numbers projected to accelerate in the coming weeks and months.

Currently, the country is in a partial lockdown with movements restricted outside designated areas. The country is still observing the curfew and many people are either now working from home or jobless.

Tourism industry has been dealt a big blow and nearly all hotels have been shut. It’s not just that, key economic pillars have been frozen and country crawling to a halt.

With many countries now blaming China for the mess caused by the coronavirus, Narok County Senator, Ledama Olekina now wants the Chinese government held responsible and billed for it. “This COVID19 is expensive someone must pay for it! Kenya has lost over $ 1.2b in tourism revenue, $2B in diaspora remittances, the NSE has tumbled. Our entire economy has shrunk and someone must pay for it! StateHouseKenya please send a bill of $100B to China to pay!” He said.

”Can’t sleep thinking about how life has changed, thousands of SMS’s asking for rent money, food money for the day and we continue entertaining this Chinese Mess? I agree with @realDonaldTrump the Chinese must pay! No gym just getting FAT! Hapana!” He continued.

  • North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un Recently Underwent A Heart Surgery That Went Terribly Wrong

North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un Recently Underwent A Heart Surgery That Went Terribly Wrong

(Reuters) – South Korean and Chinese sources on Tuesday cast doubt on reports North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was gravely ill after media outlets said he had undergone a cardiovascular procedure in hospital and was in “grave danger”.

Daily NK, a Seoul-based speciality website, reported late on Monday citing one unnamed source in North Korea that Kim, age 36, was recovering after undergoing the procedure on April 12.

CNN cited a U.S. official with direct knowledge of the matter as saying Washington was “monitoring intelligence” that Kim was in grave danger after a surgery.

However, two South Korean government sources rejected the CNN report without elaborating on the surgery. The presidential Blue House said there were no unusual signs coming from the reclusive state building nuclear weapons.

An official at the Chinese Communist Party’s International Liaison Department, which deals with North Korea, told Reuters the source did not believe Kim was critically ill.

South Korean shares exposed to North Korea tumbled and the Korean won KRW= fell on the reports. The won traded down more than 1% against the dollar even as South Korean government sources said Kim was not gravely ill.

Daily NK said Kim had been admitted to hospital on April 12, just hours before the cardiovascular procedure, as his health had deteriorated since August due to heavy smoking, obesity and overwork.

It said he was now receiving treatment at a villa in the Mount Kumgang resort county of Hyangsan on the east coast after undergoing the procedure.

“My understanding is that he had been struggling (with cardiovascular problems) since last August but it worsened after repeated visits to Mount Paektu,” a source was quoted as saying, referring to the country’s sacred mountain.

An authoritative U.S. source familiar with internal U.S. government reporting on North Korea questioned the CNN report that Kim was in “grave danger”.

“Any credible direct reporting having to do with Kim would be highly compartmented intelligence and unlikely to leak to the media,” a Korea specialist working for the U.S. government said on condition of anonymity.

Kim’s potential health issues could fuel uncertainty over the future of the reclusive state’s dynastic rule and stalled denuclearisation talks with the United States, issues in which Kim wields absolute authority.

Speculation about Kim’s health first arose following his absence from the anniversary of the birthday of its founding father and Kim’s grandfather, Kim Il Sung, on April 15.

    Reuters

On April 12, North Korean state media reported that Kim Jong Un had visited an airbase and observed drills by fighter jets and attack aircraft.

Two days later North Korea launched multiple short-range anti-ship cruise missiles into the sea and Sukhoi jets fired air-to-surface missiles as part of military exercises.

The missile launches were part of the celebrations for Kim’s grandfather, Seoul officials said, but there was no state media report on his attendance or the tests.

Reporting from inside North Korea is notoriously difficult, especially on matters concerning the country’s leadership, given tight controls on information.

Kim is a third-generation hereditary leader who rules North Korea with an iron-fist, taking over the titles of head of state and commander in chief of the military since late 2011.

In recent years Kim has launched a diplomatic offensive to promote both himself as a world leader and his hermit kingdom, holding three meetings with U.S. President Donald Trump, four with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and five with China’s President Xi Jinping.

He was the first North Korean leader to cross the border into South Korea to meet Moon in 2018. Both Korea’s are technically still at war, as the Korean War of 1950-53 ended in an armistice, not a peace treaty.

Kim has sought to have international sanctions against his country eased, but has refused to dismantle his nuclear weapons programme, a steadfast demand by the United States.
