‘We Failed’: Secret Service Chief Calls Attack On Trump ‘Most Significant Operational Failure’

The assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump was “the most significant operational failure” of the Secret Service, said its Director Kimberly Cheatle on Monday.

“The assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump on July 13 is the most significant operational failure of the Secret Service in decades, and I am keeping him and his family in my thoughts,” Cheatle said during a House Oversight Committee hearing.

Stating that the agency’s mission is to protect the US leaders, Cheatle added: “On the 13th, we failed. As a director of the United States Secret Service, I take full responsibility for any security lapse of our agency.”

She pledged to “move heaven and earth to ensure” that an incident like the Trump attempted assassination does not happen again.

During his opening remarks, James Comer, the chair of the House Oversight Committee, demanded resignation of Cheatle.

“However, in complete defiance, Director Cheatle has maintained she will not tender her resignation, therefore, she will answer questions today from members of this committee seeking to provide clarity to the American people about how these events were allowed to transpire,” said Comer.

Comer also called the assassination attempt as “one of the darkest days in American political history.”

“It represents the ugliest part of what American politics has become, hatred of each other and a dangerous turn to extremism. Before we are Republicans or Democrats, we are Americans if we play political affiliations above our duty and love of country,” said Comer.

Trump was attacked on July 13 at his campaign rally in Butler County in the state of Pennsylvania while addressing supporters. One person was killed and two injured. The Secret Service announced that the assailant was “neutralized” at the scene.

The FBI classified the attack as an assassination attempt and identified the perpetrator who was killed at the scene as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.

    – Secret Service scrutiny

Cheatle was grilled multiple times by House lawmakers regarding the timeline of the shooting during the hearing, and faced calls from several members to step down from her office.

At one point, she was asked about footage and reports that showed the shooter climbing onto the roof before the attack.

“We are still combing through communications and when communications were passed,” Cheatle said. “I don’t know all of the communications”.

The director also said the initial investigation of the agency into the assassination attempt will be completed in two months and no employee from the agency has been disciplined for their role in Bulter.

Representative Andy Biggs, a Republican, was among the lawmakers demanding Cheatle resign. “You should have come today, ready to give us answers… I call on you to resign today. Today,” said Biggs.

However, she brushed away the calls, saying: “I think I am the best person to lead the Secret Service at this time”.

Representative Jamie Raskin, a ranking member of the Committee, pressed Cheatle regarding information about the presence of a “suspicious” person in the crowd and why was Trump allowed to take the stage.

“If the detail had been passed information that there was threat, the detail would never have brought the former president out onto stage,” she said.

She said the agency was informed about a suspicious individual “somewhere between two and five times” on the day of the attempted assassination.

“I don’t have an exact number to share with you today, but from what I have been able to discern, somewhere between two and five times there was some sort of communication about a suspicious individual” to the agency, Cheatle said.

    – ‘Full of sh*t’

Rep. Tim Burchett asked several questions and later called the Secret Service chief a “DEI horror story.”

“You said that ‘the buck stops with me,’ and I agree. I don’t think you should resign. I think you should have been fired,” Burchett told Cheatle. “Ma’am, you have not achieved today. You have let the American public down.”

Rep. Nancy Mace was also among the lawmakers to grill Cheatle, asking her to answer a series of yes or no questions on the agency’s response to the assassination attempt.

“Both sides of the aisle today have asked for your resignation. Would you like to use my five minutes to draft your resignation letter? Yes or no?” Mace asked.

    “No. Thank you,” Cheatle responded.

The Republican representative later asked: “Have you provided all audio and video recordings in your possession to this committee, as we asked on July 15? Yes or no?”

“I would have to get back to you,” Cheatle said.

“That is a no. You’re full of sh*t today. You’re just being completely dishonest,” Mace said, adding: “You are being dishonest or lying. You’re being dishonest here with this committee. These are important questions that the American people want answers to.”

“And you’re just, you’re just dodging and talking around it in generalities. And we had to subpoena you to be here. And you won’t even answer the questions. We have asked you repeatedly to answer our questions. This isn’t hard. These are not hard questions,” Mace concluded.

Rep. Glenn Grothman asked Cheatle whether the roof that the shooter was killed on had been cleaned or not.

“I don’t have an answer for that,” she replied.

  • Senator Wants Secret Deal To Lease JKIA To Indian Firm Probed

Senator Wants Secret Deal To Lease JKIA To Indian Firm Probed

A senator now wants the management of Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) to explain how it entered into an alleged private deal to lease the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to an Indian firm, Adani Airport Holdings Ltd.

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka wants KAA to provide details of the contract between them and transaction advisor ALG, a Spanish firm citing the ownership of the company, processes undertaken to identify and final award of the contract to develop an Air Transport Policy in Kenya and subsequent payment of Sh160 million to the company.

    Public land

In a statement tabled before the Senate Plenary, Onyonka further wants the airport management to furnish the Senate with the notice of the meeting, agenda, minutes and resolution of the board meeting convened by KAA on July 15, 2024.

“In the statement, the committee should state the reasons for the government plans to make available free land to the company to build a city-side development on public land which may lead to land issues in areas surrounding JKIA,” reads part of the statement.

According to Onyonka, KAA entered an agreement with ADANI Commercial a private company to ‘Build, Operate and Transfer’ to lease JKIA and the process to pay a fixed concession fee as will be agreed in the concession agreement.

Onyonka argues that the tenure of the model was to be 30 years where the assets developed through capital expenditure by the company will be transferred to KAA at the expiry of the concession term.

In addition, the value was to be determined and agreed upon by the parties which value shall be structured to grant the company an equity of 18 per cent. “The company will be entitled to set the charges it levies from airline and other users for its services at JKIA among other proposed terms of the concession,” reads part of the statement.”

    Faced criticism

Onyonka also wants the Senate Roads and Transport committee chaired by Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa to explain the government’s plans to provide free land to the company for a city-side development on public land, which may lead to land issues in areas surrounding JKIA.

“We must not allow the auctioning of our International Airport, JKIA. They wanted to privatise it, they failed now they are trying to enter into backdoor deals with international firms in total disregard of the law,” said Onyonka.

JKIA has long faced criticism over issues such as leaking roofs, inadequate drainage, and lack of shelter, which have been particularly problematic during the onslaught of heavy rainfall in early March.

It has been established that KAA awarded the initial contract of refurbishing terminal 1A n B to a Chinese company- China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Cooperation Company Limited at Sh316.95 million.

Already a lawyer Titus Makhanu has written to the KAA Managing Director requesting information regarding the privately initiated proposal (PIP) for the development and operation of JKIA by ADANI Airports Holding Limited.

In a letter dated July 17, 2024, Makhanu claimed that after the lapse of the 30 years’ period, ADANI Airports will own 18 per cent Equity in the project for life in spite of not funding anything. “This is absurd. Considering that the project is of serious public interest and stake, urgently supply us with the information failing which, you may not withstand the next cause of action,” stated Makhanu.

Security Beefed Up At JKIA Ahead Of Protests

A contingent of security officers from various units has been mobilized to ensure the safety of travellers and normal operations at JKIA.

The deployment is in response to the anticipated protests at the facility.

A group of protesters are planning to occupy the facility.

A spot check has shown a multitude of officers, especially from the General Service Unit (GSU), and anti-riot officers from the administration police service.

Sources within the security apparatus reveal that the deployment followed a day-long meeting Monday between top security bosses and the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) at the facility.

At the primary screen yard which is the main entry point to the facility, hundreds of armed security officers kept vigil from as early as 6am.

The area is normally manned by regular officers from the JKIA police station assisted by GSU officers from the nearby Embakasi Training School.

Services, however, remained uninterrupted inside the facility.

  • Kenyan Parliament To Spend Over Sh100M In Repairs From Protest Damages, Insurance Refuses To Cover: PSC

Kenyan Parliament To Spend Over Sh100M In Repairs From Protest Damages, Insurance Refuses To Cover: PSC

The Initial damage assessment of the extent of destruction following the invasion of precincts of Parliament last month during the anti-finance bill demonstration now stands at over Sh100 Million.

The Parliamentary Service Commission indicated that the assessment is ongoing with the figures expected to increase.

The revelation was made during the presentation of the 2024/2025 supplementary budget by the commission.

“They were substantive damage with the physical damage so far is Sh100 million, we are yet to get the estimates from the system which was mainly the security side is estimated to be quite high,” PSC Director General Clement Nyandiere said.

The youth, demonstrating against the Finance Bill 2024, managed to breach security and gain entry into the bicameral house, leading to chaotic and unprecedented scenes.

The Commission stated the cost of damages, destruction of building and property will be catered for by Insurance while the institution will bear the cost of vandalism.

“We had insurance for buildings and fire which will be taken care of. The insurer has given us information on things which will not be taken care of which include systems which may be significant,” Nyandiere stated.

For three week now, the parliament precincts has been regarded as a ‘crime scene’ as investigation continues on the security breach with repairs ongoing following the destruction.

Members of the Public who include journalist had temporarily been barred from accessing the main precincts of the bicarmel house to pave way for the renovations.

The demonstrators, initially gathered along City Hall Way, charged towards Parliament Road, raising concerns about how they managed to overpower the police and gain access to the highly secured area.

Within minutes, the youth breached the exterior gate adjacent to the Jomo Kenyatta Mausoleum and divided into groups, wreaking havoc inside Parliament.

One group targeted the Senate Chambers, causing widespread damage by shattering windows, destroying furniture, and removing decorative fixtures. Although they attempted to gain access to the house, the locked doors thwarted their efforts.

Another group managed to enter the National Assembly Chambers, which were open at the time.

A third group raided the dining area, helping themselves to the arranged buffet for MPs who had just exited the chambers after passing the Finance Bill 2024. The demonstrators, lacking cutlery, ate with their hands as parliamentary staff fled for safety.

The situation escalated further as protesters vandalized windows and set fire to the new wing of the Parliament building, causing significant damage. MPs and parliamentary staff scrambled for safety, questioning how the demonstrators managed to breach such a secure zone.

  • Tanzanian President Suluhu Fires Senior Ministers Amid Loyalty Crisis

Tanzanian President Suluhu Fires Senior Ministers Amid Loyalty Crisis

Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan has fired two senior members of government including the foreign minister in a mini-cabinet reshuffle, her office said.

The changes came as Hassan seeks to regain trust from foreign powers over a programme of economic and political reforms, including easing restrictions on opposition parties and media, that some critics had seen as faltering.

The presidency announced late on Sunday, July 21, that Hassan terminated the appointments of the minister of foreign affairs and East Africa cooperation, January Makamba, and the minister of information, communication and information technology, Nape Nnauye.

They are influential figures in the ruling party, Chama cha Mapinduzi (CCM).

No reason was given for their removal.

The dismissal of Nnauye comes a week after comments he made surfaced in a video, saying elections results would depend on who counts votes and announces the results.

Nnauye later apologised, saying it was a joke, but activists and some social media users said the statement undermined Hassan’s push to improve democracy.

Hassan appointed Mahmoud Thabit Kombo as new foreign affairs minister and Jerry Silaa as minister of information, communication and information technology.

Before Kombo’s appointment, he was Tanzania’s ambassador to Italy while Silaa was the minister of lands, housing and human settlements development. Two more ministers and deputy ministers were also appointed, the presidency said.

In power since 2021, Hassan’s government has won praise for rolling back her predecessor’s crackdowns on the opposition and civil rights groups. But arrests last year of a lawyer and an opposition politician have raised questions over her government’s human rights record.

  • Revealed: Kenyans Linked To Sh14B Israeli Tender Probe

Revealed: Kenyans Linked To Sh14B Israeli Tender Probe

For 10 years leading to 2018, officials from Israeli contractor Shikun & Binui would jot down transaction details of kickbacks paid to Kenyan government officials to secure lucrative road contracts.

That little black book could now open a Pandora’s box as the anti-graft watchdog completes its investigation into a bribery ring which saw Shikun & Binui, trading as SBI International in Kenya, fined over Sh9 billion by an Israeli court.

The book is just one of numerous pieces of evidence that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) expects to receive from Israeli authorities to conclude local investigations in a case it hopes will sustain convictions in Kenyan courts.

Former Transport ministers Michael Kamau, Franklin Bett and ex-Transport Principal Secretary John Mosonik headline the list of 18 Kenyans whose names came up in the Israeli investigations into SBI International and the resultant court case.

Others mentioned as beneficiaries of the bribes include top officials of the Kenya National Highways Authority (Kenha), Kenya Urban Roads Authority (Kura), Kenya Rural Roads Authority (Kerra) and the National Environment Management Authority (Nema).

The officials are Samuel Okech (director, Kenha), Linus Tonui (ex-director, Kenha), Mwatu John Mwichia (Kura manager), Mwangi Maingi (former Kerra director-general), John Okuna Ogango (former Kerra director-general) and Nkadayo Joseph Nakodony (former Kura director-general).

Others are Kidenda Otiano Meshack (ex-Kenha director-general), Ephraim Munene Mwangi (Kenya Revenue Authority), Justus Bosire Nyakego (health inspector), Stanslaus Palapala Muteshi (Nema), John Okumu and John Karinge (Kenha). Officials of AMA Consultants, which undertakes consultancies in civil engineering and construction projects in Kenya and other countries, are also adversely mentioned.

According to the EACC, the scheme included inflation of the project costs to enable payment of kickbacks. Most of the projects and contracts in connection with which the alleged bribes were paid were largely funded by the World Bank. The global lender supplied Israeli authorities with documents that aided the conviction of, SBI International officials.

Many of the documents and evidence used by Israeli authorities were obtained by the EACC.

On Friday, EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi said the Israel investigation and court case got first priority because that was where the first complaint against SBI International was filed.

Mr Ngumbi said a good chunk of the Kenyan investigation is now complete and that the EACC is only awaiting some documents from Israel and statements from SBI International officials so as to complete the probe.

He said the threshold of proving bribery in Israel is much lower than that in Kenya’s judicial system, but that the watchdog is confident of building a solid case.

“We have covered a lot of ground. A lot that needs to be done has been done. The nature of bribery cases (in Kenya) is that the person has to come out and provide the evidence that they gave out the bribe. We requested the information and the officials of the company are yet to record a statement and provide the evidence for the case to proceed,” Mr Ngumbi said.

Mr Ngumbi said its officials had visited Tel Aviv where they were given access to the evidence gathered by the Israeli authorities.

    False invoices generated

The evidence included false invoices generated and used to justify the payment of bribes to Kenyan officials, documents held by employees of their subsidiary Amos Hadar and Shay Skeif and “the double books” in connection to the bribes. The 20-page notebook where the transactions related to the alleged bribes were recorded was also seized.

In 2010, SBI had been awarded a Sh14 billion tender for the construction of Mau-Summit-Kericho-Kisumu highway.

The bribery ring came to light in 2018 when two former SBI International employees approached Israeli authorities and blew the whistle. Israeli detectives partnered with EACC to build a case by collecting documents from SBI International offices in Kenya and recording witness statements.

On February 20, 2018, Kenyan and Israeli detectives conducted simultaneous raids on SBI offices in Kenya and Israel.

EACC searched SBI’s Kenyan branch premises in Nairobi and Machakos. Documents, computer files and mobile communication devices were seized. SBI employees and agents, including Israeli nationals on site, were questioned. The names of the Kenyan officials were obtained by the Israeli law enforcement authorities while carrying out the raid at SBI Infrastructure Limited offices in Nairobi and Machakos.

    Received bribes

Other evidence obtained during the raid include the method used to carry out the payments, the amount that each of the officials received and the purpose of the bribes.

Israeli investigative agencies in 2019 froze assets worth billions of shillings belonging to the company. To release the assets, the company had to deposit Sh8.67 billion to the confiscation fund of the general custodian. The amount later increased to Sh9.61 billion due to interest over time.

The settlement agreement between the company and the government also determined that the company should pay Sh9.02 billion of the amount that includes Sh346.95 million on its subsidiary SBI Infrastructure.

On Friday, Mr Bett, a former State House comptroller under President Moi’s government, said he was questioned for over six hours in 2018. He, however, denied ever receiving any bribes from SBI International or its officials. Mr Bett maintained that by the time he was appointed Transport minister in 2009 by President Kibaki, SBI had already been awarded road contracts and that his job was to oversee the projects.

Mr Kamau, who was Transport CS between 2013 and 2015 under President Kenyatta’s administration, did not pick our calls or respond to our text messages. Mr Mosonik, and Mr Mwatu and Mr Oketch neither picked our calls nor responded to text messages.

  • ‪Kenyans National ID Cards To Expire After Every 10 Years, Govt

‪Kenyans National ID Cards To Expire After Every 10 Years, Govt

Kenyans will need to renew their national ID cards every 10 years, the Principal Secretary for Immigration and Citizen Services, Julius Bitok, has announced.

In a statement issued on Monday, the PS clarified that the expiry date has no direct correlation with the general election date and dimistified the claims that dismissed claims that the expiration dates of the newly introduced Maisha Card are tied to the timing of general elections.

Bitok explained that the card’s microchip, similar to ATM cards, has a shelf life of 10 years from the date of issuance.

“The Maisha Card features a machine-readable microchip that contains relevant security features and personal details. Like other documents, such as ATM cards, the microchip has a shelf life of a maximum of ten (10) years from the date of issuance. The expiration date has no direct correlation with the general election date,” he stated.

The clarification comes after civil society organisations raised concerns over the legality and expiration dates of digital identity cards.

Bitok said that the introduction of the Maisha Card seeks to enhance the security of national identification and comply with International Civil Aviation Organisation requirements.

The government rolled out the issuance of Maisha Cards on February 23 to replace traditional IDs.

So far, 972,630 cards have been issued, with 531,329 being new applications and 441,301 duplicates.

Holders of the Maisha Card will be required to renew their IDs every ten years without undergoing new biometric registration, although updated photos will be required to reflect changes in facial features.

“Applicants seeking renewal of expired National ID cards will not be required to undergo fresh biometrics. However, they will retake their passport-sized photos due to potential changes in facial features over the years,” explained Bitok.

  • DCI Probing A List Of NGOs For Operating Illegally In Kenya

DCI Probing A List Of NGOs For Operating Illegally In Kenya

Three organisations are on DCI radar for operating illegally.

The Public Benefit Organisations Regulatory Authority previously NGO Coordination Board Monday revealed that the NGOs in question were not registered and were receiving funds they cannot account for channelled through unauthorised accounts.

Addressing a presser, PBO Chairperson Mwambu Mabongah withheld the names of the organisations which are now under further investigation by the detectives.

He further confirmed that 16 organisations which had been flagged by the government are registered, three under the PBOs Act, 2013 while the rest by both the Registrar of Societies and Companies.

Some of the listed organisations were linked to anti-government protests over alleged funding by the Ford Foundation.

“Out of the 16 organizations listed in the correspondence by the PS State Department for Foreign Affairs, only 3 are registered under the PBOs Act, 2013 whereas the rest are registered by both the Registrar of Societies and Companies” Mabongah stated.

However, an inquiry into allegations of regulatory breaches exposed the three PBOs for running unauthorised bank accounts.

“The Authority has further forwarded to the DCI for further investigations, PBOs that are currently in operation without obtaining the requisite registration and yet the PBOs in question are receiving funding and running bank accounts that have not been authorized and implementing projects that cannot be quantified or accounted for,” he said.

    PBOs Act

The Public Benefit Organisations Act, 2013 (the Act) came into force in May replacing the Non-Governmental Organisations Coordination (NGO) Act.

With the new law, all organizations engaging in Public Benefit in Kenya are required to either obtain public benefit status as provided for under section 7 and/or register with the Authority under sections 10 and 11 of the PBOs Act.

NGOs registered under the NGO Coordination Act shall be deemed to be registered as PBOs under the Act and shall have up to one year from the commencement date to seek registration as a PBO while those that were exempted from registration under the NGO Coordination Act have three (3) months from the Commencement Date to apply for registration.

Failure of NGOs to register as PBOs under the Act within the specified periods will lead to loss of PBO status.

  • Report: Several Tanks Of Toxic Sodium Cynade Looted In Rironi Accident

Report: Several Tanks Of Toxic Sodium Cynade Looted In Rironi Accident

Several containers of Sodium Cyanide are missing following a road accident that occurred on Saturday in the Rironi area along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway, Kiambu County.

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has issued a serious warning to the public regarding the hazardous nature of the contents.

The public is cautioned that the contents of these containers are extremely harmful and should immediately report any sightings to the nearest police station or chief’s office.

The truck involved in the accident was transporting Sodium Cyanide, a toxic chemical posing severe risks to both human health and the environment.

The missing containers contain this dangerous substance, recognizable as a white pellet-like material.

In response to the incident, the Ministry of Health Saturday issued a public alert urging people to avoid the area and cooperate fully with authorities.

“The ministry advises the public to avoid the site of the incident and to cooperate with our emergency and disaster response teams as they work to contain the situation,” Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni stated.

According to Muthoni, the substance is extremely toxic, and ingestion or inhalation of even small amounts can be fatal.

“Exposure can cause immediate symptoms such as headache, dizziness, shortness of breath, nausea, and vomiting.”

“Severe exposure can lead to loss of consciousness and convulsions within minutes,” she added.

Prolonged or repeated exposure to lower levels can result in long-term health issues, including neurological damage, thyroid dysfunction, and cardiovascular problems.

In terms of environmental hazards, Sodium Cyanide can pose a significant threat to aquatic life.

Any accidental release into waterways can cause extensive fish kills and long-term damage to aquatic ecosystems.

“Although Sodium Cyanide can degrade over time, its initial impact is often devastating,” Muthoni pointed out.

She also recommended proper personal protective equipment when handling the substance to prevent direct exposure.

The ministry remains committed to ensuring public safety and managing the risks associated with the chemical.

“Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available,” the statement read.

  • PROFILE – All Eyes On Kamala Harris As Joe Biden Withdraws Candidacy For US Presidential Election

PROFILE – All Eyes On Kamala Harris As Joe Biden Withdraws Candidacy For US Presidential Election

US President Joe Biden announced Sunday that he is withdrawing his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election against former President Donald Trump, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him in the bid for Democrats to keep the White House.

“While it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling the duties as president for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote in a letter posted on X.

The unprecedented decision puts the Democratic Party into scramble mode to choose its official nominee for the Nov. 5 presidential election. Time is ticking, as the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois from Aug. 19-22 is quickly approaching.

The president wasted no time in endorsing his vice president to replace him in the race against Trump.

“My very first decision as the party nominee in 2020 was to pick Kamala Harris as my vice president. And it’s been the best decision I’ve made,” said Biden.

“Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” he continued. “Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”

Biden’s endorsement does not guarantee that Harris will be the Democratic presidential nominee, but if Harris is chosen by her party and wins the presidential election in November, she will become the first female president in American history.

Harris was born in 1964 in Oakland, California to a biologist mother who came to the United States from India as a student. Her Black father was an economics professor who came to the US from Jamaica, also as a student.

Harris studied political science and economics at Howard University in Washington, D.C. before receiving her law degree at the University of California, Hastings College of Law. She had a storied legal career, becoming the first female district attorney for San Francisco in 2004. She also won the 2010 race for California attorney general and was victorious in her reelection bid for her second term as attorney general in 2014.

In 2016, Harris won the US Senate race in California, becoming the first senator of South Asian origin and the second Black senator to enter Congress from that state. She launched a campaign for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination in January 2019 but dropped out of the race less than a year later in December.

When Biden was officially nominated as the 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, he announced in August 2020 that he had chosen Harris as his vice-presidential running mate. After Biden defeated Trump in the 2020 election, Harris became the first woman to serve as the 49th vice president as well as the first Black woman and person of South Asian descent to serve in the nation’s second highest office.

During her vice presidency, Harris traveled to more than 19 countries and met with over 150 world leaders. She also worked with Biden to reduce unemployment in the US by investing in the economy. Harris actively engaged in fighting against racism and sexism and was an outspoken advocate for abortion rights as well as LGBTQ rights.

After entering Congress, Harris first made a name for herself with her reaction to a regulation that banned travel to the US from seven Muslim countries which Trump signed into law on Jan. 28, 2017 as soon as he took office.

While Harris continued her scrutiny and questioning of Trump’s cabinet and senior appointments in 2017, she was elected to the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2018. Harris also took an active role in the Senate investigations regarding Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential elections.

In this context, Harris, who questioned US Attorney General William Barr in the Senate about the “Muller report,” was frequently mentioned in the media. In addition to the Judiciary Committee, Harris also served on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Select Intelligence Committee and Budget Committee.

Despite her impressive credentials, Harris remains a polarizing figure for Democrats, so receiving the endorsement from Biden does not make her a shoe-in for the Democratic presidential nominee. Her views on every topic, including immigration, abortion, health care, student debt relief, climate change and the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, are being scrutinized from top to bottom.

Political experts believe that Harris automatically filling the void for Biden as the party’s nominee is not etched in stone. At the Democratic National Convention next month, Biden was expected to receive the party’s nomination hands-down with nearly 3,900 delegates from all 50 states pledging to support his candidacy, double the 1,976 delegates needed to win the nomination. Now, those delegates are free to vote for whoever they want to.

If Biden had stepped down as president, Harris would have automatically replaced him as the party’s nominee, but because he is planning to serve out the remainder of his four-year term, Harris does not automatically become the Democratic Party’s candidate for the 2024 election.

While there have been a number of vice presidents in recent US history who have become the presidential candidates for their respective parties, including Richard Nixon, Walter Mondale, George H.W. Bush, Al Gore, and even Joe Biden, tapping Harris as the next presidential candidate for her party is not necessarily a foregone conclusion, even though choosing her may appear to be the obvious choice.

Other names being talked about in Democratic political circles include Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, California Governor Gavin Newsom, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and Maryland Governor Wes Moore, as well as US Senators Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Cory Booker of New Jersey.

If Harris is nominated as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, recent polls have put her on equal footing with Biden’s numbers facing Trump, with some polls giving the vice president a slight edge, although given the margins of error in many polls, a potential race between Harris and Trump would be too close to call.

A CBS News/YouGov poll showed that Trump led Harris by three points (51%-48%) compared to a five-point difference versus Biden (52%-47%). An Economist/YouGov poll had Trump leading Harris by five points (44%-39%) whereas Trump only led Biden by two points (43%-41%).

Polls aside, Democrats now have less than a month to decide if Harris should be their choice to face off against Trump in November.

  • Catholic Bishop Criticizes Ruto’s New Cabinet Choices

Catholic Bishop Criticizes Ruto’s New Cabinet Choices

The newly appointed Cabinet has sparked mixed reactions, with Bishop Cleophas Osese of the Nakuru Catholic Diocese criticizing the move as superficial.

The outspoken cleric accused President William Ruto of recycling individuals previously rejected by the public, warning that this could incite a new wave of demonstrations.

Speaking two days after the President appointed 11 members of the Cabinet in the first phase, Osese expressed disappointment, stating that the appointments fell short of the country’s expectations.

“The new list of Cabinet appointees does not meet public expectations, and we hope that Parliament will fulfil its role during the vetting process,” he said.

The Bishop also criticized the proposal to form a government of national unity with the opposition, arguing that it would undermine the spirit of democracy.

He claimed the President’s move was intended to weaken the opposition and should be rejected as it contravenes the spirit of the constitution.

“A country should have a vocal opposition, and we question whose interests these politicians are serving by seeking a government of national unity,” he said.

Addressing the press in Kinungi, Naivasha, after distributing food and clothes to the elderly, the Bishop expressed the church’s full support for the demonstrations by Gen-Z.

However, he condemned the loss of life due to excessive police force and the destruction and looting of property by demonstrators in parts of the country.

“As we call for peaceful demonstrations, we also urge the community to remember the elderly, who have been forgotten and are suffering due to poverty,” he said.

Jude Otogo from Ethel Foundation highlighted their efforts in supporting the elderly through nutrition, health checks, and advocacy, noting that many are suffering at home.

“We are working in five counties, marking this day by supporting the elderly who have been abused, violated, and neglected,” he said.

Hellen Kuria from Kenya Community Development echoed these sentiments, identifying neglect as a major challenge currently facing the elderly.

One beneficiary, Margaret Wambui, described the visit and gifts as a blessing, noting that many elderly individuals are enduring significant hardship.

“We thank the church and donors who have come to our rescue during these hard times when many of the elderly are perceived as a burden and forgotten,” she said.

  • You’re Playing With Fire, Museveni Warns Gen Z Planning Protests In Uganda

You’re Playing With Fire, Museveni Warns Gen Z Planning Protests In Uganda

Ugandan protesters who said they would press ahead with a banned anti-corruption march on Tuesday are “playing with fire”, the country’s president warned.

“Some elements have been planning illegal demonstrations, riots,” President Yoweri Museveni said in a televised address late Saturday.

Museveni has ruled the East African country with an iron fist since 1986.

He said the protesters included “elements working for foreign interests”, without elaborating.

Earlier Saturday, Ugandan police had informed organisers it would not permit the planned protest in the capital Kampala as authorities had intelligence that “some elements were trying to take advantage of the demonstration to cause chaos in the country”.

“Demonstrations can only be allowed under our mandate as long as they are not causing public disorder and disrupting lives of lawful citizens,” Ugandan police operations director Frank Mwesigwa told AFP.

The protest organisers told AFP they vowed to press on with the demonstration regardless.

“We don’t need police permission to carry out a peaceful demonstration,” one of the main protest leaders, Louez Aloikin Opolose, said Saturday. “It is our constitutional right.”

The protesters hope to take the march past parliament, which they accuse of tolerating corruption.

“Our starting point in the fight against corruption is parliament… and the demonstration is on irrespective of what police is saying,” protester Shamim Nambasa said.

The NGO Transparency International ranks Uganda low on its corruption perceptions index. With the least corrupt countries ranking highest, Uganda comes in at 141 on the list of 180 countries.

The anti-corruption protesters have been keeping track of the sometimes deadly demonstrations that have shaken neighbouring Kenya for more than a month.

The Kenyan protests, beginning as peaceful rallies against controversial tax hikes, turned into a wider anti-government campaign, with disgruntled activists also seeking action against corruption and alleged police brutality.

At least 50 people have been killed and 413 injured since the demonstrations began on June 18, according to the state-funded Kenya National Commission on Human Rights.

  • Enough Is Enough, President Ruto Vows To End Gen Z Protests

Enough Is Enough, President Ruto Vows To End Gen Z Protests

President William Ruto has declared “enough is enough” after weeks of protests that have claimed over 50 lives across the country.

Speaking in Bomet County, Ruto emphasized that he has given ample concessions to the “leaderless” protests by Gen Z, and any further continuation will only serve to disrupt the nation’s fabric.

“I have said going forward, I will protect the nation,” he stated, addressing a roadside gathering after attending a church service. “

Last week, President Ruto accused Ford Foundation of sponsoring the protests in Kenya through some civil society organisations but the American NGO has dismissed the claim.

And even as the president vowed to spoke the protests, the Gen Z movement has already released plans for more protests starting Tuesday this week.

However, Ruto has vowed that they will not proceed. “I want to promise it is going to stop. Enough is enough,” he said after unveiling a new Cabinet of eleven members, retaining six from the previous Cabinet he dissolved a week ago.

“We will protect life, we will protect property, we will stop the looters, we will stop the killers, we will stop the mayhem, we will stop anarchy because Kenya is a democracy and we want a peaceful, stable nation. Our issues are resolved using democratic means,” the president said.

This decision to retain some of the Cabinet Secretaries has angered the Gen Z protesters, who accuse him of recycling the old guard they want out of power.

The demonstrations initially started as protest against the Finance Bill in June which the president eventually shelved after protesters stormed Parliament on June 25 when it was passed.

“They said we should not pass the Finance Bill, and I dropped it. Then I called them, and they said they didn’t want to come for talks with me. They told me to go to X [spaces], and I went there, but they ran away,” the president said, adding “Then they told me to call for a national dialogue, I have called for dialogue, and now they have refused. They are still saying they are faceless, formless. I have given everyone a chance to say whatever they want. I cannot continue like this. The country is much more important than any group of people. We must come together as a nation, protect our nation, and ensure that Kenya is a democracy. Anyone who has issues should use the front door and tell Kenyans what they want.”

Azimio leader Raila Odinga on Sunday laid out a six-point action plan that the government must address before he will engage in any discussions with President William Ruto. The latest demands come as Raila faces mounting pressure from some of his allies and Kenyans to boycott the talks with President Ruto.

President Ruto initiated the talks, which Raila had agreed to but later rejected, citing the demands of the youth—specifically Generation Z—who continue to mobilize anti-government protests.

Key items on the actionable plan include compensating victims of police brutality, dismissing all protest-related cases, releasing all abductees and prisoners, and addressing unresolved issues in healthcare (specifically for healthcare workers) and education (especially for JSS teachers).

Additionally, the plan advocates for returning public healthcare insurance to the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), eliminating the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), and prosecuting all security sector individuals involved in atrocities against peaceful Kenyans. “Once these issues are resolved, we can focus on a National Conversation, and conduct it transparently in a neutral venue,” Raila said.

President Ruto had on July 9, 2024, announced a multi-sectoral national conference aimed at addressing the nationwide protests that have resulted in loss of life and widespread property damage.

Despite accusations of opportunism from some quarters, Raila underscored the importance of including diverse stakeholders in the discussions. “It is my proposal that representatives for this convention should come from various sectors including youth, government, religious leaders, healthcare professionals, lawyers, and teachers,” he said.

  • Raila Issues Ruto With Fresh Demands As He Abandons Dialogue Move

Raila Issues Ruto With Fresh Demands As He Abandons Dialogue Move

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has announced a halt to the planned national dialogue process, presenting a new set of demands to the government.

In a statement on Sunday, Odinga stressed the need for justice to be prioritized before any talks can proceed.

Odinga highlighted several prerequisites, such as compensating all victims of police brutality, dismissing all protest-related cases, and releasing individuals who were abducted or jailed during the demonstrations.

He also urged the government to address grievances raised by healthcare workers and Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers.

Additionally, Odinga insisted that the government abandon the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) in favour of the previous National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) and hold accountable all security officers who committed offences during the protests.

“Once these issues are resolved, we can focus on a national conversation, conducted transparently in a neutral venue,” he stated.

Odinga proposed that representatives for the dialogue should come from various sectors, including youth, government, religious leaders, healthcare professionals, lawyers, and teachers.

He emphasized the importance of discussing issues such as governance, the high cost of living, eradicating tribalism, combating corruption, and managing debt and fiscal policies.

President William Ruto recently called for the formation of a national multi-sectoral forum to address concerns raised by the youth following nationwide protests.

The six-day dialogue process was scheduled to begin last Monday.

However, Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura indicated last Thursday that the opposition and the government had yet to reach an agreement on some critical issues.

“Discussions are ongoing within both sides. As you may be aware, the opposition has its supporters, and they need to dialogue first, just as we are doing on our side,” Mwaura stated.

He also mentioned that a final list of individuals to participate in the forum had not yet been released.

“It is also important to note that we must not necessarily sit and talk. We may even use technology and agree on any issues. So let us be patient,” he added.

In conclusion, Odinga reaffirmed his solidarity with the young generation, which has led anti-government protests for over a month.

Initially, Odinga had supported Ruto’s dialogue initiative, describing it as “the best way forward out of the crisis we are having today as a country.”

However, he has now changed his stance, insisting that the government must meet his demands before he engages in the six-day multi-sectoral dialogue forum proposed by Ruto on July 9, 2024.

The talks proposed by Ruto were meant to start on July 15, but with Odinga’s new demands, the process now faces uncertainty.

Trump’s Doctor Says He’s In Good Health After Assassination Attempt

Former US President Donald Trump’s White House doctor said Saturday that the ex-president, who was the target of an assassination attempt, is in good condition.

Ronny Jackson said in a statement that he has been with Trump since the assassination attempt, evaluating and treating his wound daily.

He said the bullet passed millimeters from Trump’s head and struck the upper part of his right ear that created a wound 0.8 inches (2 centimeters) wide that extends to the cartilage surface of his ear.

He noted that initially there was significant bleeding and then noticeable swelling above the ear, which has since improved.

He said the wound has begun to heal properly and there is intermittent bleeding that still requires dressing.

Jackson said Trump’s overall condition is good and his wound has healed as expected.

“It is an absolute miracle he wasn’t killed,” he said.

Trump was attacked July 13 at a rally in the Butler region in the state of Pennsylvania while addressing supporters at a rally.

One person was killed and two injured in the attack. The US Secret Service announced that the assailant was “neutralized” at the scene.

The FBI classified the attack as an assassination attempt and identified the perpetrator who was killed at the scene as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks.

Govt Scraps Fees For First Year University Students

The Ministry of Education Ministry nullified fees for first year students placed in universities by KUCCPS.

In a statement dated July 19, Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyangala said the new structure will be issued from August 5.

Inyangala advised parents to ignore earlier communication from the institutions.

“The Ministry of Education wishes to inform the public, particularly parents and guardians of students that the fees to be paid by students and their families as relates to the full cost of each degree programme as previously communicated in the admission letters is hereby nullified and does not apply anymore,” Inyangala said.

“Beginning August 5, the respective universities will communicate the new fees to be paid by each student as household contribution,” she said.

The ministry however said the placement of students in the respective academic programmes remain unchanged.

“We wish to confirm that their places in the academic programmes are firmly secured.”

Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) placed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2023 cohort of students in various degree programmes. and the information communicated to the students by the respective universities.

This comes amid concern that thousands of students set to join universities in September might miss out on government funding.

Inyang’ala on Thursday told MPs they are unable to cater for loans and scholarships for the 2023 KCSE exam candidates that have already been placed in various universities.

Some 153,292 students are set to join university.
