‘Wapi Pesa Yetu,’ Goons Disrupt Church Service Attended by Rigathi Gachagua, Vandalize Vehicles in Kasarani Chaos

A Sunday service at the Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) in Mwiki, Kasarani Constituency, descended into chaos when a group of rowdy youths stormed the event attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, leaving a trail of destruction and fear among congregants.

The incident unfolded shortly after a fundraising event for a church construction project concluded. Witnesses reported that the intruders, chanting “Wapi pesa yetu?” (Where is our money?), hurled chairs into the air and clashed with rival groups within the church compound. The unrest forced Mr. Gachagua and the congregation to flee their seats as the situation spiraled out of control.

Armed security personnel accompanying the former deputy president fired warning shots into the air in a desperate bid to repel the goons, who appeared determined to breach the church’s sanctity.

Outside, the chaos escalated as several vehicles, including those in Mr. Gachagua’s convoy, were pelted with stones and vandalized. At least one motorbike was set ablaze amid the melee, which disrupted the service for over 30 minutes.

“People were running in all directions. It was terrifying to see such violence in a place of worship,” said a church member who requested anonymity. The bishop’s pleas for calm were drowned out by the commotion as stunned church leaders watched helplessly.

Local police were conspicuously absent during the incident, raising questions about the response to the security breach.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, though allies of the former deputy president pointed fingers at Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja, alleging the disruption was orchestrated to intimidate Mr. Gachagua.

This incident marks the second violent encounter targeting him in recent months.

In December 2024, he and his supporters were attacked with stones in Limuru, Kiambu County—an event he described as an assassination attempt linked to his fallout with President William Ruto.

Mr. Gachagua, who has been vocal about his opposition to President Ruto’s administration ahead of the 2027 elections, was at the church alongside several political allies, including MPs and MCAs loyal to his cause.

The timing of the disruption is notable, coming just a day before his scheduled national TV interview on April 7, where he is expected to address his supporters and critique the government’s performance following Ruto’s recent tour of the Mount Kenya region.

The former deputy president has intensified his public engagements in recent weeks, with his last appearance on March 31 at Wangige Market in Kiambu, where he accused the government of failing to deliver on its promises. Sunday’s chaos in Kasarani is likely to fuel his narrative of political persecution as he rallies support in his home region.

As calm was eventually restored, the congregation regrouped to continue the service, though the sense of unease lingered. The incident has sparked outrage among local leaders, with calls for a thorough investigation into those responsible for the brazen attack on a place of worship.

  • Widow Reveals Painful Legacy of Raila’s Longtime Bodyguard

Widow Reveals Painful Legacy of Raila’s Longtime Bodyguard

In a heart-wrenching interview with Sunday Nation, Caren Auma, George Oduor’s widow, shared her late husband’s life and legacy as Raila Odinga’s trusted bodyguard for over three decades.

Auma’s heartfelt reflections paint a picture of a devoted family man, a loyal protector, and a steadfast patriot who died too soon, leaving behind a legacy of love, sacrifice, and unspoken secrets.

George Oduor, who passed away on April 2, was more than just a bodyguard to Raila Odinga.

For 31 years, Oduor stood as a silent sentinel by Odinga’s side, navigating the turbulent waters of Kenyan politics with unwavering loyalty.

Oduor during the burial ceremony of the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.

Auma, still grappling with the pain of her loss, described her husband as a man whose commitment to duty often placed him in the crosshairs of danger.

“George lived a life where he knew a man could be snatched away without warning or explanation,” she said.

The couple’s story began in the early 1990s, a time when Kenya was embroiled in political upheaval. Auma, then a young woman, met Oduor at a political rally in Kisumu, where she was struck by his quiet strength and commanding presence.

“He was the opposition leader Raila Odinga’s trusted guard, and I was just a girl in the crowd,” she recalled.

Their love blossomed amidst the chaos of political rallies and protests, with Oduor often shielding Auma from the violence that erupted during those turbulent times.

“He would tell me, ‘Stay with my sister in Lang’ata,’ to keep me safe,” she shared, highlighting the protective instinct that defined Oduor both in his professional and personal life.

Auma’s account reveals the toll that Oduor’s role took on their family.

As Raila Odinga’s bodyguard, Oduor was frequently away, stationed at various locations to ensure his boss’s safety during politically charged moments.

Auma spoke of the sleepless nights, the constant worry, and the fear that one day her husband might not return home.

“When I met George during Odinga’s campaigns, I didn’t realize what I was signing up for,” she admitted. “After every rally, I’d wait for him to call and confirm he was safe. Sometimes he wouldn’t call, and I’d spend the night in tears.”

“The first time I truly understood the danger of his position was August 1998. The political tension between President Moi and Raila erupted, and suddenly George was arrested inside Parliament itself. For a week, he simply vanished. Those seven days were the longest of my life.”

“The outcome? One year and three months in Kamiti Maximum Prison. His siblings were furious when he walked out of prison and straight back to Raila’s side.”

“We’ve warned you about following Raila,” his siblings told him. “If you’re arrested again, we won’t come looking for you.” They couldn’t understand why politics was worth such sacrifice when it brought him nothing but trouble.”

Despite the challenges, Auma and Oduor built a life together, raising three children in Kangemi, Nairobi.

Their home, though modest, was filled with love and laughter, even as Oduor’s demanding job kept him away for long stretches.

Auma described how Oduor would return home exhausted but always made time to connect with his family.

“He’d come home, and even if he was tired, he’d play with the kids. He didn’t want them to feel his absence,” she said. Yet, the strain of his work was undeniable.

Auma revealed that Oduor often carried the weight of “party secrets,” knowledge he kept locked away to protect both his family and Odinga. “He’d say, ‘What I know, I know for a reason,’” she recalled, hinting at the burdens her husband bore in silence.

Oduor’s death has left Auma and her children shattered.

The loss has been particularly hard on their three children, who have struggled to come to terms with their father’s absence.

“The kids still ask about him,” Auma said, her eyes welling up. “They don’t understand why he’s gone, and I don’t have the answers to give them.”

Beyond his role as a bodyguard, Auma remembers Oduor as a man of deep faith and principles.

“He believed in Odinga’s vision for Kenya, but he also believed in doing what was right,” she said. Oduor’s dedication to Odinga was not just a job—it was a calling. He stood by Odinga through some of the most tumultuous moments in Kenya’s political history, including the 1998 protests, the 2007 post-election violence, and Odinga’s numerous presidential campaigns.

“George was there through it all,” Auma said. “He saw things that would break most people, but he never wavered.”

    Caren and George.

Auma’s tribute to her husband also serves as a reflection on the sacrifices made by those who work behind the scenes in Kenya’s political arena. “Everyone sees the star, but no one sees the people who make it possible,” she said, referring to Oduor’s often-overlooked role.

She expressed gratitude to Odinga for his support after Oduor’s death, noting that he had offered to help with funeral costs and even visited the family to pay his respects.

“Raila told me, ‘George was more than a bodyguard to me—he was my brother,’” Auma shared.

As Auma continues to navigate life without her husband, she holds onto the memories of their time together—the stolen moments of joy amidst the chaos, the quiet evenings in their Kangemi home, and the unspoken love that bound them.

“George gave everything for his country, for Raila, and for us,” she said. “I just wish he’d had more time.”

For many Kenyans, George Oduor may remain a footnote in the larger narrative of Raila Odinga’s political journey.

But for Caren Auma and her children, he was a hero—a man whose courage, loyalty, and love left an indelible mark on their lives.

As Auma put it, “There’s something most Kenyans don’t understand about my George. He was the kind of man who gave his all, even when it cost him everything.”

‪US Cancels All Visas for South Sudanese Passport Holders ‬

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that the US is immediately revoking visas issued to all South Sudanese passport holders due to the African nation refusing to accept its citizens who have been removed from the US.

Rubio, in a statement on Saturday, added that the US will also block any arriving citizens of South Sudan, the world’s newest country, at US ports of entry.

He blamed “the failure of South Sudan’s transitional government to accept the return of its repatriated citizens in a timely manner”.

A cornerstone of President Donald Trump’s immigration policy is removing unlawful migrants from the US, with the promise of “mass deportations”.

“It is time for the Transitional Government of South Sudan to stop taking advantage of the United States,” said Rubio.

“Every country must accept the return of its citizens in a timely manner when another country, including the United States, seeks to remove them,” he added.

It comes as fears grow that South Sudan may again descend into civil war.

On 8 March, the US ordered all its non-emergency staff in South Sudan to leave as regional fighting broke out, threatening a fragile peace deal agreed in 2018.

South Sudanese in the US were previously granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS), which allows them to remain in the US for a set period of time.

TPS for South Sudanese in the US had been due to expire by 3 May.

South Sudan, the world’s newest nation, gained independence in 2011 after seceding from Sudan.

But just two years later, following a rift between President Salva Kiir and Vice-President Riek Machar, the tensions erupted into a civil war, in which more than 400,000 people were killed.

A 2018 power-sharing agreement between the two stopped the fighting, but key elements of the deal have not been implemented – including a new constitution, an election and the reunification of armed groups into a single army.

Sporadic violence between ethnic and local groups has continued in parts of the country.

Since returning to office, the Trump administration has clashed with international governments over deportations of their nationals from the US.

In January, Colombian President Gustavo Petro barred two US military flights carrying deported migrants from landing in his South American country.

Petro relented after Trump promised to place crippling tariffs and sanctions on Colombia.

  • Trial: Chilling Details Emerge in Sarah Wairimu’s Alleged Murder of Tob Cohen

Trial: Chilling Details Emerge in Sarah Wairimu’s Alleged Murder of Tob Cohen

The murder trial of Sarah Wairimu Kamotho, accused of killing her husband, Dutch businessman Tob Cohen, resumed Friday at the High Court in Nairobi, with prosecutors revisiting grim details of the crime scene at the couple’s Kitisuru residence.

Key testimony came from Frank Anunda, a retired officer from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Crime Scene Support Service.

Anunda recounted the September 13, 2019, discovery of Cohen’s body in a sealed underground water tank on the property.

Investigators, acting on suspicion, broke open the cemented tank and found a black cloth-wrapped bundle inside.

Upon unwrapping it, they uncovered Cohen’s remains—his legs, hands, and neck bound, showing signs of torture prior to death.

Anunda presented forensic evidence, including 105 photographic prints across six booklets, documenting the body’s retrieval and subsequent autopsy.

The post-mortem revealed severe injuries: broken ribs, blunt force trauma to the head, and other wounds consistent with extreme violence.

Dental records, notably Cohen’s distinctive golden tooth, confirmed his identity.

Additional evidence collected from the residence included biological samples from bedrooms, bathrooms, and living areas, all critical to the prosecution’s case.

Justice Diana Kavedza denied Wairimu’s latest bail application, citing her “lack of remorse” and alleged attempts to intimidate witnesses and law enforcement. The court also ordered Cohen’s home preserved under police custody for further testimony.

Cohen was reported missing on July 20, 2019; his decomposing body was found nearly two months later.

Prosecutors allege Wairimu murdered him on July 19 or 20 at their Lower Kabete home.

After initial charges were dropped in favor of an inquest, new evidence led to revived charges.

The high-profile case has fueled public speculation, particularly regarding motives tied to Cohen’s Sh500 million estate. The trial adjourned until May 7, 2025.

  • Ruto Says He Is Ready To Go Home And Return To Farming If Voted Out In 2027

Ruto Says He Is Ready To Go Home And Return To Farming If Voted Out In 2027

President William Ruto says he will concede defeat and return to farming if the Kenyan electorate votes him out in the next General Election, slated for 2027.

Speaking after laying the foundation stone for the Othaya Modern Market in Nyeri County, Ruto highlighted key achievements, including agricultural reforms, the streamlining of the Competency-Based Curriculum, and the expansion of the road network.

“I want to say that I am fully aware that I must meet the development expectations set by Kenyans, and I have no intention of failing. However, if Kenyans vote me out, I am ready to go back home and engage in farming,” said Ruto.

His remarks come at a time when opposition leaders, including his former deputy Rigathi Gachagua, have stated that their mission is to ensure his removal from office.

The President expressed confidence that Kenyans would re-elect him due to his development initiatives, which he believes will transform the fortunes of the country.

“I have done a lot to improve the production and marketing of cash crops, especially coffee and tea. I have also initiated many projects in roads, electricity, and other areas that will improve the lives of the people. So, I am confident I will win back my seat,” said Ruto.

The President told his competitors that the Kenyan electorate will choose their next representatives based on their development projects.

During the tour, the President announced several benefits for the people of Nyeri, including electricity, roads, and markets.

President Ruto in Othaya Town, Nyeri County, on the 5th day of his Mt Kenya development tour

Nyeri Governor Kahiga Mutahi, a key ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, praised the President for taking the initiative to visit the region and affirmed that he is welcome back whenever he wishes.

“Your Excellency, we are happy you are here. But when we look at your record, we can see you still have 45 more visits pending,” he said.

“Whenever you visit, we have been the recipients of good things, such as the stadium here, whose construction had stalled for the past 7 years. I can also attest to the ongoing Affordable Housing Project and the construction of a modern market at Field Marshal. We encourage you to keep coming back and bringing development with you,” he added.

Nyeri County is considered the political stronghold of former Deputy President Gachagua, who has been vocal in accusing President Ruto of orchestrating his impeachment in October 2024.

Gachagua was impeached on charges, including abuse of office and tribalism.

  • PS Nominee Isaboke Under Fire Over MultiChoice Share Deal

PS Nominee Isaboke Under Fire Over MultiChoice Share Deal

The Principal Secretary nominee for Broadcasting and Telecommunications came under scrutiny regarding the acquisition of Sh5.2 million worth of shares in GOTV Kenya, a subsidiary of MultiChoice, and whether this will pose a conflict of interest if his nomination is approved.

Isaboke, who was recently nominated by President William Ruto for the PS position, was asked during his vetting whether his previous business dealings with MultiChoice, particularly the purchase of shares in GOTV, would lead to a conflict of interest in his new role overseeing the telecommunications and broadcast sectors.

A memorandum had been submitted before the committee of communication, information and innovation chaired by Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie to block his approval over integral issues and conflict of interest following the acquisition of the shares.

“Upon my nomination as PS, I stepped down as the Director of GOTV Kenya as required by the law,” he said.

He explained that he had no involvement in the company since his nomination, ensuring that there would be no overlap between his previous role and his potential new responsibilities in President Ruto’s administration.

He also defended the legitimacy of his acquisition of the shares, noting that it followed a long negotiation process, especially considering that, between 2012 and 2021, MultiChoice had to secure waivers to comply with regulations that required foreign entities to have a minimum of 20 percent shareholding.

“There was nothing irregular about acquiring these shares. It was above board for a business that had sought shareholding for so long,” Isaboke said.

Isaboke further detailed the history behind his involvement with GOTV, noting that when the company was fully owned by MultiChoice, negotiations with Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) were ongoing for KBC to take up the shares as their preferred partner in the country.

“At the beginning of 2021 they were told there won’t be any more waivers because they have exhausted negotiations time frame. As a businessman an opportunity arose and we has mutual negotiations to take up the shares and actually comply with the requirement and henceforth take up the shares,” the PS nominee stated.

He explained that, following the end of the waiver period in 2021 after KBC failed to requisition the shares, an opportunity arose, and after rigorous talks, he signed an agreement to acquire the Sh5.7 Million shares.

“We looked at the nominal set up of the group, which was Sh17 million, and I paid for my setup which was Sh5.2 million. There was nothing irregular about acquiring these shares it was above board for a business that had sort for shareholding for so long,” he asserted.

At the same time, he defended his capacity for the role by highlighting his earlier contributions to the country’s digital migration, which he called his biggest undertaking in the telecommunications sector.

“In 2015, when I was working at MultiChoice, we supported the government in the successful digital migration,” Isaboke stated.

“We provided Kenyans with affordable decoders, making Kenya one of the most digitalized countries in the world, and I am proud of that,” he added.

The Broadcasting PS nominee has served as the Chairman and Non-Executive Director of GOtv Kenya Ltd, a subsidiary of MultiChoice Africa Group. Additionally, he has held the position of Group Executive and Head of Regulatory Affairs at MultiChoice Group, overseeing Sub-Saharan Africa (48 countries) from Dubai.

Isaboke was appointed to his current role in 2018 when MultiChoice Africa made two high-profile executive appointments aimed at strengthening the group’s business strategies to deliver the best content on DStv and GOtv while ensuring an exceptional customer experience. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Managing Director and Regional Director for East Africa at MultiChoice Africa Group companies from 2008 to 2018.

  • Court Freezes Sh643M in Assets of City Hall Official in Corruption Probe Win for EACC

Court Freezes Sh643M in Assets of City Hall Official in Corruption Probe Win for EACC

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has secured a win after the Court of Appeal froze properties and cash belonging to a city hall employee suspected to be proceeds of crime.

Court of Appeal Judges Gatembu Kairu, Francis Ochieng and Aggrey Muchelule issued the order freezing the assets and cash linked city hall official Nashon Wilson Kinani, his firms Willy Walla International limited, Wilcoreg limited, Bridge side Farm and his spouse Regina Munyiva Mutinda and Regineez Enterprise.

The court barred them from dealing with the cash and monies in his bank accounts as well as transferring or selling motor vehicles and lands valued Sh.643,213,688.12.

“An order to prevent the respondents from transferring, disposing, or dealing with motor vehicles and land titles pending the appeal,” ordered appellate court judges.

Kanani, a director of Club 1824- had won the case against EACC last year when the High Court lifted the freeze order and said EACC had failed to prove that the assets were linked to corrupt dealings at City Hall.

The official had opposed the application saying he had fought for over two years, to prove that he legitimately acquired the properties and cars.

However, the appellate court said the potential for these assets to be moved or otherwise dealt with before the appeal was heard and determined presents a real risk that any success in the appeal would be rendered meaningless.

“The respondents’ assertion that the applicant had not proven the impossibility of recovery does not entirely negate this risk, especially considering the nature and value of the assets involved. We are satisfied that the applicant has demonstrated a risk of suffering irreparable loss,” said the judges.

The court added that the public interest in preserving assets suspected of being acquired through corruption was a significant factor that weighed in favour of granting the injunction.

The EACC said Kanani abused his position of trust by receiving revenue meant for the Nairobi County government through bank accounts held by his private companies and spouse.

The Commission said it concluded investigations and established Mr Kanani and his companies were in possession of unexplained assets amounting to Sh643.2 million.

Kanani successfully argued that the assets and funds in question were acquired genuinely.

But the anti-graft body appealed against the decision arguing that the assets were suspected to have been acquired through corruption and they should be preserved pending the hearing of the appeal.

  • IG Douglas Kanja Insists He Didn’t Attend Ruto’s Rally In Nyeri

IG Douglas Kanja Insists He Didn’t Attend Ruto’s Rally In Nyeri

Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has dismissed as misleading allegations by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) that he attended a political rally in Kieni, Nyeri County.

While reaffirming the IG’s unwavering commitment to constitutional impartiality in serving all Kenyans without political bias, the NPS, through Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, said, “At no point has the IG engaged in activities that could compromise the neutrality of his office”.

Nyaga clarified that the IG’s presence in Nyeri was strictly in line with his official duties, including oversight of security arrangements during the President’s development tour, a key mandate of the NPS.

“The Presidential Escort Unit (PEU) is legally tasked with protecting the President, visiting dignitaries, and other designated VIPs under the direction of the Inspector General of Police”, Nyaga added in the statement.

He outlined the IG’s various engagements since mid-March 2025 including an operational tour across Baringo, Samburu, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Laikipia, and Meru Counties, focusing on, impromptu inspections of police stations, welfare, mental health, financial prudence for officers, encouraging the enhancement of ICT skills to align with the digitization of police services, reaffirming the Reform Agenda, and the success of Operation Maliza Uhalifu in the North Rift.

Earlier, the IG and the CS Interior assessed progress in Loruk (Baringo) and Kirimon (Laikipia), where they commended the officers for restoring security in bandit-prone areas.

“NPS urges the public to disregard the misleading assertions, as it remains apolitical and committed to the mandate of maintaining law and order”, NPS advised.

The rejoinder was in response to a hard-hitting statement by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) that called out the police boss for addressing a political rally during the President’s development tour of Mt Kenya region.

LSK President Faith Odhiambo stated that the IG’s violated the constitution.

“Mr. Kanja’s actions are in direct conflict with the constitution, statute, and the National Police Service Standing Orders. By reducing the high office of Inspector-General to a conduit of advancing ethno-political balkanization, he has compromised its integrity and impartiality,” she said.

The lawyers are now demanding that he issue a public apology and immediately refrain from engaging in any political mobilization, rallies and discourse, or resign.

“We urge Mr. Kanja to re-evaluate his tasks and do that which is required of him by the law and the people of Kenya. In the alternative, we invite Mr. Kanja to step aside from the position of Inspector-General and allow”, LSK asserts.

  • Gory Details of How Missing Multimedia University Student Was Killed, Body Stuffed in Suitcase, and Dumped in a Water Tank

Gory Details of How Missing Multimedia University Student Was Killed, Body Stuffed in Suitcase, and Dumped in a Water Tank

In a chilling discovery, the decomposed body of a missing Multimedia University (MMU) student was pulled from a water tank on campus, unraveling a suspected murder that has left a community in shock.

Sylvia Kemunto, a first-year student pursuing Mass Communications and Computer Science, vanished on Sunday, March 30.

Her lifeless body was found two days later, on Wednesday, April 2, police and university officials confirmed.

The grim scene revealed a brutal end: she had been strangled and struck with a blunt object, her life snuffed out for reasons yet to be uncovered.

Police have zeroed in on her boyfriend as the prime suspect, a man now at the center of a desperate manhunt.

The nightmare began when Kemunto’s mother, Triza Kwamboka, a resident of Kawangware, couldn’t reach her daughter.

She had sent upkeep money through a church elder’s phone, but her calls to confirm its receipt went unanswered, swallowed by an eerie silence. Panic rising, Kwamboka made the journey to MMU, only to learn her daughter was nowhere to be found.

The university confirmed Kemunto’s absence, and a distraught Kwamboka rushed to Lang’ata Police Station to report her missing.

Through tears, she recounted to police how Kemunto had confided in her about a fellow student’s unwanted advances. “She said she didn’t like him, and I told her to stand firm,” Kwamboka said, her voice breaking as she wiped her cheeks.

Investigators now believe Kemunto was killed in her own room, her body later dragged to the rooftop of her hostel and dumped into a water tank.

The killers went to chilling lengths to conceal their crime, securing the tank with wire and placing a stone atop it to thwart detection.

    Kemunto.

On the day she disappeared, Kemunto’s roommate recalled her leaving for church, leaving the room empty—until the boyfriend arrived around lunchtime.

Witnesses later saw him hauling a suitcase, one that belonged to Kemunto, from her room to his own in a separate block. The horrifying suspicion emerged: her body was likely folded inside.

That night, the suspect’s roommate noticed the suitcase in their shared space. “I saw him lie on it,” the witness said, puzzled by the strange behavior, “but I didn’t understand why.” By morning, both the suitcase and the suspect had vanished. “I woke up around 8, and they were gone,” the roommate added.

Kemunto’s disappearance sparked an urgent investigation.

Police traced her phone signal to within the university compound near Ongata Rongai, though it had been switched off. Nairobi police boss George Sedah said this clue kept the search focused on campus.

Then, on Wednesday, a putrid stench wafting from Block E drew the search team’s attention. By afternoon, they pinpointed the source—a water tank on the hostel rooftop.

Inside, they found Kemunto’s decomposing remains, a sight so haunting it silenced the bustling campus. Her body was soon moved to the mortuary, leaving behind a trail of grief and unanswered questions.

MMU’s acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Geoffrey Kihara, confirmed the suspect’s connection to the crime. “It’s clear that on that Sunday, when the girl was reported missing, the boy entered her room. The police are working to find him,” he said, his words heavy with the weight of the tragedy.

Students at MMU are reeling, their cries for justice echoing through the halls.

The Multimedia University Student Association (MUKSA) has called for calm among students as investigations continue.

In a statement, the MUKSA Secretary-General described the incident as a “wake-up call” to address gender-based violence and toxic masculinity.

“We must confront the reality of gender-based violence and create a culture that respects and protects our women,” the statement read in part.

The student leaders have also planned a prayer session and sensitization programs to raise awareness on safety and non-violence.

Former Raila’s aide Silas Jakakimba whom they also worked alongside described him as competent.

“This folk, his comportment – everything, defined humility and loyalty. He was my Friend and, a Dearest Brother. He always called me, ‘Janam’. And I always called him – ‘JOMADONGO’. Moi University Issues Redundancy Notice To UASU

Moi University has issued a redundancy notice to University Academic Staff Union (UASU) as it moves to cut down on lecturers due to declining student numbers and a cash crisis.

According to the institution’s Acting Vice Chancellor Kiplagat Kotut, this has created “a difficult operating environment making it a challenge for the University to meet its financial obligations.”

“As a result, we are compelled to review our operations including payment of employee emoluments.”

He further pointed out that the move aligns with Section 40 of Kenya’s Employment Act 2007 and the university’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with UASU, the decision was required due to a decrease in revenue resulting from fewer students.

“This decision has been necessitated by a reduction of revenue brought about by decline in student numbers,” he said.

“During the notice period, we will engage in consultations with the affected employees and their Union representatives, in accordance with the law and the UASU CBA. Our obligation is to explore all possible alternatives to limit the impact of the redundancy, including potential redeployment or alternative roles where possible,” he stated.

Affected employees will be entitled to severance pay, salary in lieu of notice, accrued leave payments, and any other due benefits, as per statutory requirements.

Further details of the employees that are impacted and the proposed timeline for the redundancy will be communicated in due course, meanwhile, the university seeks cooperation during the process and assures them that they will be carried out fairly and transparently.

  • Kenyan Woman Arrested In India For Smuggling Cocaine Worth Sh300M

Kenyan Woman Arrested In India For Smuggling Cocaine Worth Sh300M

Mumbai Customs officials have arrested a 43-year-old Kenyan woman for allegedly smuggling 1.7 kilogrammes of cocaine hidden in her luggage at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.

Authorities said the drugs, valued at Sh268.35 million, were trafficked from Nairobi through Doha before reaching Mumbai.

Acting on intelligence reports, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) intercepted Emily Kanini Rodha upon her arrival on Tuesday.

According to The Indian Express, officials became suspicious due to her nervous behavior, prompting them to inspect her baggage.

“During the examination of her trolley bag, officers noticed an unusual heaviness. Upon further inspection, a synthetic material was found affixed to the bottom. After removing it, we discovered four plastic packets containing a white powdery substance. Field tests confirmed it was cocaine,” a Customs official said.

Authorities seized the 1,789-gram consignment and took Rodha into custody for questioning.

    Judy Wangeci Ngahu

She admitted to knowing the bag contained illegal substances and disclosed that she had been recruited by a woman named Millicent in Nairobi.

“Rodha stated that Millicent handed her the contraband in Nairobi and had also arranged her flights and hotel stay in Mumbai. She was promised Sh100,000 for successfully delivering the drugs to a contact in Delhi,” the official added.

Investigators believe Rodha was working for a larger drug syndicate operating between Africa and India.

“We suspect this is part of a wider network. Efforts are underway to identify her accomplices,” the official said.

Rodha has been charged under India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and remains in custody as investigations continue.

    Drug smuggling involving Kenyans

Her arrest comes amid heightened concerns over drug smuggling involving Kenyan nationals. The case follows another high-profile conviction of a Kenyan woman in Vietnam.

The Kenyan government is currently working to secure the life of Margaret Nduta Macharia, a 37-year-old woman sentenced to death in Vietnam for drug trafficking.

Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei confirmed that the government is intervening in her case after pressure from leaders and concerned Kenyans.

“Nduta’s case is complex and difficult, but we are doing everything within our disposal to secure reprieve for our national,” Sing’Oei said.

Nduta was convicted on March 6 by the People’s Court in Ho Chi Minh City after being found guilty of smuggling over two kilogrammes of cocaine. She was arrested in July 2023 while in transit to Laos. However, her family says they only learned about her arrest and sentencing through the internet on March 8.

Her mother, Purity Wangari, has pleaded with the government to intervene and have her daughter repatriated to serve her sentence in Kenya.

“It was the first time my daughter was travelling overseas searching for greener pastures. I plead with the authorities to help bring her home, even if it means serving her sentence locally,” Wangari said.

She further claimed that Nduta was unaware that she was carrying drugs, alleging that the narcotics were hidden in luggage given to her by a Kenyan man for delivery to a woman abroad.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi had warned Kenyans living abroad against getting involved in illegal activities.

He expressed concern over the increasing number of Kenyans traveling to Asia for job opportunities but ending up entangled in scams and other unlawful dealings.

“We must ensure that Kenyans venturing into the diaspora do not fall into the trap of engaging in illegal activities. This is extremely important and must be taken seriously,” Mudavadi said.

Kimani Ichung’wah Heckled In Front Of President Ruto In Nyandarua

Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wah faced a tough time while addressing a crowd during President William Ruto’s development tour in Ol Kalou, Nyandarua County.

The incident began when the MP was called to speak immediately after ICT CS Eliud Owalo (Note: Correction—William Kabogo is not the current ICT CS; Eliud Owalo holds the position as of 2023) addressed the crowd.

As Ichung’wah took his position atop his vehicle, the crowd turned hostile as he attempted to promote the government’s agenda.

Amid chants from the crowd, the MP was heard defiantly telling off the hecklers in the Kikuyu dialect, saying, “No one sells me fear.”

However, the agitated attendees refused to relent.

Despite his efforts to calm the situation, the crowd continued disrupting his speech, making it impossible for him to proceed.

Ichung’wah is among the leaders accompanying President Ruto on his Mount Kenya tour to inspect ongoing projects in the region.

The President commissioned several development projects, including the Ol Kalou Water Project, J.M. Memorial Hospital Complex, Last Mile Connectivity initiative, and a sewerage project in Ol Kalou Constituency.

He also laid the foundation stone for the construction of affordable housing in Ol Kalou Town.

Earlier, Ruto hosted several women at Sagana State Lodge in honor of the late Ann Wanjiru Mumbuchi, a grassroots leader best remembered for passionately steering the 1,000-member Mathira Women Choir.

“President William Ruto hosted Mathira women at Sagana State Lodge for breakfast to honor the late Ann Wanjiru Mumbuchi (Muchiru), praising her dedication to women’s empowerment in the constituency and her participation in development activities. May her soul rest in peace,” he stated.

It is said that on diverse dates, between February 3, 2021, and March 5, 2021, the two jointly conspired to defraud director Mututua, Tanzanite minerals measuring 687.283 carats valued at USD 203,436, which is equivalent to Ksh22,337,273, contrary to Section 317 of the Penal Code.

Lawyer Denis Seko, representing the accused, urged the court to release his clients on a reasonable bond.

Milimani Law Courts Magistrate Carolyne Nyaguthii released each of them on a bond of Ksh5, 000,000 or they pay a Ksh2,000,000 cash bail.

The case will be mentioned on April 15, 2025, for further directions.

  • ‘Devastating Loss,’ Raila Mourns His Bodyguard Oduor

‘Devastating Loss,’ Raila Mourns His Bodyguard Oduor

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, is grieving the sudden loss of his long-serving bodyguard and personal aide, George Oduor, who passed away this evening at Nairobi West Hospital following a brief illness.

Oduor, a steadfast presence by Odinga’s side for over three decades, was more than just a security detail—he was family, a confidant, and a pillar of strength through some of Kenya’s most turbulent political chapters.

In a heartfelt statement released tonight, Odinga expressed his “profound shock and sadness” at Oduor’s passing, noting that the bodyguard had been a part of the Odinga family since the late 1980s.

“George has been a part of Jaramogi’s and my family since the late 80’s. We have stood, fallen, and risen together,” Odinga said, referring to his late father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, Kenya’s first vice president. Oduor initially served Jaramogi before transitioning to Raila’s security team after Jaramogi’s death in 1994.

Odinga painted a vivid picture of Oduor’s character, describing him as “vigilant, calm, confident, and extremely professional.” He added, “He has been a dedicated aide and dependable rock on my side all these years through tumultuous periods. I will miss George, and I am sorry to the myriad friends who miss him already.”

The ODM  leader extended his condolences to Oduor’s wife, Carol George, their family, colleagues, and friends, joined by his wife, Mama Ida, and the entire Jaramogi family. “May the almighty rest his soul in eternal peace,” he concluded.

Oduor’s death comes after a two-week hospitalization, though the specific cause of his illness remains undisclosed.

Known for his physical prowess and dedication, Oduor grew up in Nairobi’s Eastlands area of Kaloleni and was a police reservist with specialized VIP protection training, both in Kenya and abroad.

His towering presence was a familiar sight at political rallies and public events, safeguarding Odinga through decades of opposition struggles and presidential campaigns.

The news sent shockwaves through Kenya’s political circles, prompting an outpouring of tributes.

Philip Etale, ODM’s Communications Director, took to X to mourn Oduor as a “steadfast friend,” while Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai hailed him as a mentor, writing, “You were more than an aide to Baba. I will miss your wise counsel.”

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir and former Nairobi senatorial candidate Millicent Omanga also joined the chorus of condolences, with Omanga noting, “We thank George Oduor for his sacrifice and dedication in protecting Raila for us for decades.”

Oduor’s passing marks a personal blow to Odinga, who recently faced a political setback in his February 2025 bid for the African Union Commission Chairperson post.

  • ODM Accuses Kalonzo’s Wiper Party Of Plotting To Interfere With IEBC Chair Selection

ODM Accuses Kalonzo’s Wiper Party Of Plotting To Interfere With IEBC Chair Selection

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has accused the Wiper Party of attempting to disrupt the reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) following Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s call for urgent consultations with President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga.

At a press briefing on Wednesday, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna responded to claims by a section of the Azimio La Umoja coalition led by Wiper, which alleged undue interference by ODM in the IEBC reconstitution process.

Sifuna dismissed the accusations as politically motivated and aimed at discrediting ongoing efforts to reform the electoral body.

“The process is being conducted in full accordance with the recommendations of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, which was chaired by none other than Honorable Kalonzo Musyoka,” Sifuna stated.

He further noted that the delay in reconstituting the IEBC was initially caused by Wiper’s failure to nominate a representative to the selection panel.

“Following ODM’s support, Wiper’s nominee, Koki Muli, was appointed to the panel and has been part of the process from the shortlisting stage to the ongoing candidate interviews,” he added.

The NADCO report, which was established to restore confidence in Kenya’s electoral system, emphasized the need for an independent and transparent selection process for the new IEBC commissioners.

    ‘Indipendent panel’

Sifuna stressed that the selection panel operates independently and should be allowed to execute its mandate without interference.

“The panel should be allowed to carry out its work without political or external interference. We view these accusations by some Azimio leaders as an attempt to preemptively discredit the panel and the entire process,” he said.

Kalonzo had in a letter addressed to Ruto and Raila warned against skewed appoitments to IEBC insiting on non-partisan electoral officials.

“For the avoidance of doubt, should the UDA/ODM Alliance proceed with the appointment of the IEBC Chairperson and commissioners without the meaningful participation of the opposition, such an action will be viewed as an attempt to establish a partisan electoral body and pre-rig the next elections,” the Wiper leader wrote on March 28.

Kalonzo called out ODM for forging an alliance with the ruling UDA-led coalition to constitute a partisan electoral commission.

Addressing allegations of ODM’s involvement in selecting the IEBC Chairperson, Sifuna denied the accusations.

“ODM is not in government,” he asserted.

“If we were consulted, I would probably find a very good chairman for the IEBC, but that is not my job. That is the responsibility of the selection panel.”

He maintained that the selection process must remain in the hands of the panel, which includes representatives from various societal sectors, including political parties, religious groups, and professional organizations.

“It cannot be up to political players alone,” Sifuna argued.

“For anyone to demand consultation when they already have representation on the panel is disingenuous.”

Canadian National Charged With USD350,000 Investment Fraud

A Canadian citizen who is alleged to have obtained
357,300 US dollars from an American citizen using fake investment scheme was on Friday charged with fraud.

Phillip William Knight was arraigned at Milimani Law Courts where he denied the charges.

It is alleged that on diverse dates between September and October 2024, with intend to defraud, he obtained the said money from Casey Drew Cain by falsely pretending that he would invest the money for profit in World Food Programme and Sunshine Minerals Limited.

He was also charged with forging a letter from United Nations World Food Programme and using the said letter to defraud Cain USD 357,300.

The state further alleged that the suspect on September 30, 2024, defrauded Cain USD 163,000 by forging a World Food Programme Invoice purporting it to be genuine document from the United Nations.

Knight was apprehended on March 22, 2025, at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport following a stop order issued by the Kenyan government.

His arrest followed a complaint by Casey Drew Cain, who accused Knight of luring him into fraudulent investment deals.

  • Ruto Reveals Gachagua How Gachagua Attempted To Blackmail Him For Sh10B

Ruto Reveals Gachagua How Gachagua Attempted To Blackmail Him For Sh10B

President William Ruto has for the first time addressed the impeachment of his former Deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, revealing that Gachagua tried to blackmail him into handing over Ksh10 billion or face being a one-term president.

Speaking from Sagana State Lodge on Monday night, Ruto said Gachagua’s downfall was self-inflicted, blaming him for creating conflicts with officials and MPs instead of focusing on his duties.

“He was not working; he was always engaged in fights, constantly complaining about officials, including bloggers like Dennis Itumbi. I had to intervene every time until I got tired,” Ruto said.

The President, who is in Central Kenya for a five-day tour, dismissed concerns over political tensions in the region, accusing Gachagua of fabricating crises. He disclosed that the former DP demanded Ksh10 billion to “resolve issues” in Mt. Kenya, leveraging threats against him.

“I refused when he asked me for Ksh10 billion, saying that if I didn’t give him the money, I would be a one-term president. This is someone I repeatedly shielded from impeachment when leaders sought his removal for intimidation, but at some point, I gave up,” Ruto said.

Gachagua was impeached in October 2024 on charges including abuse of office and tribalism. Ruto later appointed Kithure Kindiki as his replacement.

Despite the fallout, Ruto exuded confidence in his deep-rooted support in Mt. Kenya, downplaying the impact of Gachagua’s removal.

“I have been visiting Mt. Kenya for over 20 years. This is not a friendship of months or days; it is one built over decades. Such a bond cannot be questioned based on a few months of political shifts,” he said.

Ruto dismissed Gachagua’s claims that his administration had neglected the region, citing infrastructure projects launched under his leadership.

“I have heard some leaders claim that I have done nothing. But I was the one who started the road project from Marua, passing through Wamunyoro, where this same critic resides,” he said, in a veiled attack on Gachagua.

The President also took a swipe at former Attorney General Justin Muturi, accusing him of incompetence.

“He was incompetent, and that can be confirmed by various government departments. When I moved him to the Cabinet, he absconded meetings,” Ruto said.

Muturi, who has openly criticised Ruto, previously demanded action over the abductions of youths after his own son was allegedly taken by the National Intelligence Service (NIS).

    Gachagua Fires Back

Following Ruto’s remarks, Gachagua hit back in a scathing response on X (formerly Twitter), calling the President a “pathological liar” and accusing him of misleading Kenyans.

“I am now convinced more than ever before that pathological lying is a mental disorder,” Gachagua wrote.

“The greatest existential threat to our beloved country is outright lying to the people of Kenya without blinking and failure by a leader to put his team together to harmonise their lies. I weep for my country, Kenya.”

Ruto’s visit comes amid growing political unrest in Mt. Kenya, where Gachagua has positioned himself as the region’s opposition leader. The former DP has accused Ruto of taking credit for projects initiated under former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Gachagua’s impeachment sparked backlash in the region, which overwhelmingly backed Ruto in 2022. Since then, discontent has grown, with sections of the electorate vowing not to support Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027.

Despite appointing Kindiki, Ruto has struggled to consolidate support in Mt. Kenya. Kindiki, from Tharaka Nithi, hails from a county often viewed as less influential in regional politics.

During his tour, Ruto will inspect and launch multi-billion-shilling projects in infrastructure, housing, electricity, water, and industrial development. Among them is the inspection of modern fresh produce markets aimed at benefiting small-scale traders.

He is scheduled to commission completed projects, inspect ongoing ones, and unveil new initiatives across Laikipia, Nyeri, Meru, Kirinyaga, Nyandarua, Murang’a, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Kiambu counties.
