Oparanya Faces Leaders’ Wrath For Claiming Raila Has Lost Western Grip

KAKAMEGA – Political temperatures in Western Kenya have flared after former Kakamega Governor and current Cabinet Secretary for SMEs, Wycliffe Oparanya, declared that ODM leader Raila Odinga has lost his political sway in the region.

Oparanya, speaking on Friday at an empowerment event hosted by Lurambi MP Titus Khamala, said Odinga’s influence in Western politics had waned and would be of little help to Governor Fernandes Barasa in his 2027 re-election bid.

“What makes you think Raila Odinga will come and help you get votes here in Kakamega? I know Raila more than you think you know him, and he will not help you,” Oparanya said, in remarks made before National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and several MPs.

The statement drew immediate backlash from Governor Barasa, who accused Oparanya of undermining Odinga’s legacy despite having benefited immensely from his support.

“With all due respect, you are the last person who should question Odinga’s influence in Western Kenya. Raila has held your hand for a very long time in your political career,” Barasa said on Saturday while addressing mourners at the burial of Mama Grace Nyona in Likuyani Constituency.

Barasa went further, suggesting Oparanya’s cabinet appointment was secured through Odinga’s backing. “If you think he is not influential enough, then resign from the position he helped you get. If not for him, then you would not be serving in the cabinet right now,” he added.

The Kakamega governor also defended his own political standing, warning Oparanya against belittling his chances. “I want to tell our elder Oparanya that you underestimate Barasa at your own risk. I was elected by the people, and we are focused on service delivery. When politics come, we will hit the road,” he said.

Likuyani MP Innocent Mugabe also joined the fray, cautioning leaders against dismissing Raila’s role in the country’s politics. “Raila has been a very respectable leader in this country for decades. Baba, wherever you are, know that we support you and respect you as our party leader,” Mugabe said.

The row between Oparanya and Barasa is the latest episode in an escalating power struggle within ODM in Kakamega, which widened after the hotly contested county chairmanship elections where Barasa defeated Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera—an ally of Oparanya.

The fallout has since split the party into rival camps, with Barasa’s allies rallying behind him, while Oparanya leads a faction grouped under the so-called “G-8” umbrella.

Analysts say the feud reflects a deeper battle over Western Kenya’s political future as Odinga eyes retirement from frontline politics, leaving room for new power brokers to emerge.

  • Is Mary Biketi Eyeing the Trans Nzoia Woman Rep Seat in 2027? How Oparanya’s Side-Wife Is Riding on Fame for Political Ambitions

Is Mary Biketi Eyeing the Trans Nzoia Woman Rep Seat in 2027? How Oparanya’s Side-Wife Is Riding on Fame for Political Ambitions

Mary Biketi, the youngest and most flamboyant wife of Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, has ignited whispers across Trans Nzoia County.

Riding atop a flashy 4×4 SUV, waving like a seasoned politician to roaring crowds, Biketi recently arrived in the region in a spectacle that left tongues wagging.

Though her visit was branded as philanthropic—under the Mary Biketi Foundation—the pomp, branding, and heavy security screamed something far more calculated.

From escorting boda bodas to customized jackets and orchestrated cheers, everything about her arrival bore the hallmarks of a soft political launch.

Could this be the beginning of her journey toward clinching the woman representative seat in 2027?

The Rise of Mary Biketi: From Oparanya’s Shadow to Public Spotlight

Mary Biketi is no stranger to public scrutiny. Ever since leaked images confirmed her relationship with CS Oparanya, she has embraced fame rather than shying away. What started as social media buzz about being Oparanya’s side-wife has now evolved into a well-oiled PR machine.

Biketi’s recent activities in Trans Nzoia point to a woman preparing to transition from influence to office. Her foundation has become the perfect cover for political groundwork.

Philanthropy, while noble, often serves as a launchpad for political careers in Kenya. Biketi’s actions mirror this trend. She speaks to the needy, donates to shelters, and hosts beauty pageants.

But it’s the military-style coordination of her convoys and the strategic location choices that have caught political observers’ attention.

This past weekend, chaos erupted during one of her stops after her high-end SUV was attacked by goons armed with crude weapons.

Some speculate the violence wasn’t random—it might have been political resistance. After all, flashy newcomers tend to ruffle feathers, especially in traditionally contested spaces like Trans Nzoia politics.

Online, her Instagram page is awash with curated posts and captions that toe the line between humility and political bravado. “Thank you, Trans Nzoia County,” read one post, accompanied by a video of her waving to cheering residents.

Another highlighted her foundation’s mission at Agape Rescue Centre. Yet behind the carefully chosen words lies a woman who is fast learning how to control the narrative—and perhaps, the vote.

Not Charity But A Political Blueprint in Motion

Despite her team’s insistence that the visit was purely philanthropic, the optics tell a different story. Mary Biketi arrived in a convoy that could rival a governor’s motorcade. Supporters wore uniforms branded with her foundation’s logo.

Her security was tight and noticeable. The speeches were vague, and while she did address some small business owners, there was little substance to the engagements.

The event’s highlight was the launch of a beauty pageant—Mr. and Miss Mary Biketi Foundation—a move that many saw as an attempt to build a loyal youth base. The pageant, according to insiders, had sponsors, emcees, and even a media crew.

Political branding disguised as “community engagement” is not new in Kenya’s political playbook. Critics argue that her activities mimic the political strategy used by other high-profile women to gain popularity before announcing official bids.

Biketi’s sudden interest in Trans Nzoia is especially telling. It’s not her home county, but it’s politically strategic—ripe for outsider influence and not as saturated with female political heavyweights.

CS Oparanya’s Influence – A Silent Power Behind the Curtain?

Mary Biketi’s rise cannot be viewed in isolation. Her relationship with CS Wycliffe Oparanya gives her access to powerful networks and financial muscle. While Oparanya has remained silent on his wife’s political steps, his influence looms large.

Some critics believe he is quietly facilitating her political dreams, using his political capital to smooth the way.

Trans Nzoia has long been a hotbed of political experimentation. With the current woman representative likely to face strong opposition, Biketi’s well-funded and dramatic entrance may be a sign of things to come.

The goon attack, while unfortunate, only deepens the mystery and the perceived threat she now poses to other political players.

Whether Mary Biketi succeeds or not remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: she’s not just riding on Oparanya’s name—she’s building her own brand, carefully curated and strategically positioned.

    Conclusion

Mary Biketi is no ordinary political aspirant. She’s young, bold, stylish, and knows how to command attention. Her sudden rise may be dressed in philanthropy, but the political undertones are hard to ignore.

As 2027 draws closer, expect to hear her name more often in Trans Nzoia’s political circles. The only question now is—will voters buy the brand or see through the glitz to the ambition beneath?

  • KUSCCO Declared Insolvent After Audit With Sh12.5B Deficit

KUSCCO Declared Insolvent After Audit With Sh12.5B Deficit

Kenya Union of Savings and Credit Cooperative Society’s (Kuscco) has been declared insolvent as investigations reveal the institution has a deficit of Sh12.5 billion.

Yesterday, Kuscco’s interim board handed over a forensic report on the findings of the alleged mismanagement of funds at the institution after carrying out thorough investigations.

Co-operatives and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) Development CS Wycliffe Oparanya, speaking at the handing over revealed that Kuscco is insolvent due to the investigations’ findings that the institution has a deficit of Sh12.5 billion.

Oparanya explained that due to the lack of oversight, there was a general mismanagement that allowed manipulators to see it as a state of income and understate expenditure, which was concealed through manipulation of books of accounts.

The forensic report comes after Sacco leaders confronted union officials demanding concrete answers and calling for action to hold the involved accountable following revelations from a Grant Thornton audit.
The audit had exposed that the union’s top officials had been siphoning Sh587 million annually between 2013 and 2024.

The officials’ alleged sins included transferring money to their own accounts, riding on a weak internal management structure to manipulate books of accounts and making transactions that cumulatively cost KUSSCO over Sh6.5 billion over the period covered by the forensic audit.

It was following the allegations that earlier this year, former Cooperatives CS Simon Chelgui sacked the entire board of Kuscco.

The Sacco leaders further accused the union of gross negligence that led to the massive depletion of members’ savings, many of them directly blamed Kuscco’s management, alleging their involvement in the financial irregularities and complicity in the illicit withdrawals.

Kuscco officials then had revealed to the leaders that they were working with agencies to investigate the loss but acknowledged that the union lacks the funds to compensate affected members.

They also blamed internal management failures for the irregularities. “Kuscco is asking members to accept the situation as it is while also urging them to continue saving. What are we supposed to tell our members when they start demanding their money back? The union has failed to address the core issue or provide any assurance that the money will be refunded,” said Christopher Wainaina, chair of PCEA Ruiru Sacco.

Oparanya promised to send the forensic report to relevant government agencies including the EACC, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the police so that those involved could face action.

“This is a serious issue, some of these issues are the ones which have brought us down in this country, where individuals or individuals conspire to bring down institutions like Kuscco, an institution that is meant to take care of other Saccos and extract money to use the money as personal property, which is not acceptable,” Oparanya said.

He added that the cooperative movement has been crying over mismanagement for so long, adding that he was happy the Cooperatives Bill, 2024, was moving very well at the National Assembly and hopefully could move to the Senate. “If it goes through, it will be able to cure some of the issues that arose at Kuscco,” he stated.

Disappointment As Audit Reveals Govt ‘Waiver’ To Nyeri Coffee Farmers Was A Loan

The debt-ridden Baricho Farmers’ Cooperative Society in Nyeri has been thrown into confusion after an audit revealed that a debt waiver granted by the government two months ago was a loan.

In September, Cooperatives Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya and Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi visited the society to present a “gift” from President William Ruto.

Mr Oparanya and Mr Wamumbi told members that the President had given them about Sh63 million, ostensibly to bail them out of debt.

This was good news for a cooperative that is now reeling under a Sh300 million debt accumulated over the past two years.

But little did the 7,000 coffee farmers know that what the MP called a debt waiver was a government loan.

On Thursday, the farmers were stunned when an audit report commissioned by Mr Oparanya revealed that the ‘gift’ was an additional loan from the New Kenya Planters Cooperative Union (KPCU).

The beleaguered farmers will now have to pay the new loan at an interest rate of three percent.

Speaking at a special general meeting held at Karindundu Coffee Factory on September 9, Mr Oparanya said President Ruto had directed his ministry to launch an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of millions of shillings from coffee farmers.

The CS also ordered the Commissioner of Cooperatives, Mr David Obonyo, to start the probe immediately and submit a report within two months.

During the September meeting, Mr Oparanya accused former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua of failing to turn around the coffee sub-sector as mandated by his boss.

“I was directed by the president to convene this meeting following an outcry by farmers. The president has heard your cry and the government has allocated Sh63 million,” Mr Oparanya said.

Mr Wamumbi, who was accompanied by his Nyeri Town counterpart Duncan Maina and Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga, told the farmers that he had come to deliver the good news from the President.

“I managed to meet the president who has offered to relieve farmers of their debt burden,” he said.

However, when the investigation report was read to them on Thursday, the farmers were in for a rude shock when it was revealed that the society owes Sh300 million including the Sh63 million “gift” from the President.

The report, read by Mr Philip Ouma from the office of the Commissioner for Cooperatives, showed that the society owes the New KPCU Sh97 million, including the Sh63 million that was supposed to be a debt waiver.

Mr Ouma said that according to available documents, the Sh63 million was part of the loan given to the society by the New KPCU.

“We can’t believe what we have just heard in that report. All along, we believed the President had waived the Sh63 million debt only to be told that it was a loan,” said Mr Gilbert Gicheru. “Why heap debt upon debt without revealing this to us? How can government officials lie to farmers? We are very disappointed.”

Mr Wamumbi, who did not attend the meeting, could not be reached for comment on the outcome of the audit. He did not respond to the Nation’s enquiries.

The audit report also highlighted alleged financial malpractices by some officials of the society, including about Sh14 million curiously spent on “public relations” in one year.

It was recommended that former officials found culpable should be surcharged. Nine officials were suspended and replaced by an interim committee to pave the way for the audit.

The society was also advised to hold elections within a month to implement the report’s recommendations.

Stephen Letoo Resigns As Chair Of Men’s Conference

Media personality Stephen Letoo has stepped aside from the ceremonial Men’s Conference seat effective today.

Letoo who recently got married in a largely publicized wedding ceremony held at William ole Ntimama stadium on April 20, failed to meet the expectations of his fans when he only wedded one lady as opposed to a polygamist setup as he had made many to believe he was.

The Citizen TV journalist made the announcement when he arrived from Zanzibar where he has been spending a better part of his honeymoon with the wife.

“After soul searching, I have arrived at a decision to step down as the chairman of the Men’s conference and I have tendered my resignation to the office of the Men’s conference based in Nairobi and I will cease being the chairman with immediate effect,” Letoo said.

He added that he arrived at the decision after a wide consultation with friends and allies in Kenya and beyond.

“I will allow my members to seek my replacement and I want to assure them that I will be available for consultations and any advices, if they seek them,” he said.

Letoo has been under immense pressure from the members who felt he was a letdown for only marrying one wife thereby making him unsuitable for the big position that was previously held by the late Mzee Kibor who was a polygamist.

In his recorded resignation speech seen by Kenya Insights, Letoo signed off by thanking his fans for the support and wished the incoming chairman well.

“I want to encourage the incoming chairman that being the head of men is not for the faint-hearted people and I want him to continue to advocate for rights of boy-child and men regardless of who they are, whether single, married, polygamous or any other status,” Letoo said.

It is not clear who will take after him but one thing is for sure, that person must be polygamous abd as for now, the only trending figure is former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya who’s swimming in the fresh waters of young Mary Biketi.

“I am not afraid. He is a polygamous man and I respect the other wives,” she said.

“I call him daddy because I’m fond of him that way,”

In a video posted on her Facebook page, Oparanya said he has a family that needs his protection and that those sending out fake news should stop.
