I’m A Life Member Of KNUT, Sossion Warns Oyuu To Be Ready For A Showdown As Seeks To Reclaim SG Post

Former Kenya National Union of Teachers secretary general Wilson Sossion has doubled down on his bid to reclaim the union’s top seat, setting up a direct showdown with incumbent Collins Oyuu ahead of the April 3 national elections.

Sossion maintains he is fully eligible to run, brushing off Oyuu’s claims that the Knut constitution bars him from the race for not being a member.

Oyuu, speaking after a union meeting in Embu on March 18, dismissed Sossion’s candidature, arguing that Knut does not recognise “life membership.”

“Some people are coming back to say ‘I’m a life member of the union’. In Knut leadership there’s no life member, the constitution is very clear; membership is by contribution and a member who we pick,” Oyuu said.

“We want to tell you, loud and clear before central region, Knut is not a banana republic. Take your time and go elsewhere, fetch for other things.”

But Sossion has hit back, framing Oyuu’s remarks as panic in the face of a serious challenger.

He insisted the union is democratic and does not discriminate against members who comply with its rules.

“I’m a fully paid-up member of Knut since September 1, 1993 when I joined the teaching service. Even when I stepped out in 2021, I have paid my union dues in full up to and including June 2026, and even paid supplementary dues, which is allowed internationally,” Sossion said.

The Knut constitution requires members to pay a Sh100 entrance fee alongside annual subscriptions and any levies set by the National Executive Council or Annual Delegates Conference.

It also limits membership to those who are or have been actively engaged as teachers. Any disputes over membership are referred to the National Executive Council for review by the union’s Professional Standards Committee.

Sossion’s eligibility question was effectively settled on February 27 when the Court of Appeal ruled that his deregistration and removal from the teachers’ register by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in 2019 were unlawful.

While the court acknowledged that TSC had grounds to terminate his employment following his political nomination, it found the process flawed and procedurally unfair.

The ruling restored his status as a teacher, clearing the way for his participation in union elections.

Sossion, who led Knut from December 2013 to June 2021 before resigning to focus on his role as a nominated MP, says his comeback is driven by pressure from teachers.

Speaking during a radio interview, he claimed the union had lost its voice under current leadership.

“The clamour for me to go back to Knut is not my initiative. It is the initiative of teachers across Kenya because Oyuu and his group have reduced the union from a vibrant Marxist union to a silent social union that sees nothing, hears nothing and says nothing about teachers,” he said.

He added that he had initially stepped back, hoping for a government role, but teachers urged him to return.

“They’re telling me, ‘No, don’t wait for government. Come and do this one because we know you can do it well for us.’”

Sossion likened his return to the Biblical Moses responding to the cries of Israelites in Egypt.

“I have heard the cries of my teachers in Egypt and I will go back,” he said.

The Knut elections are scheduled to be held at the Tom Mboya Labour College in Kisumu on April 3, preceded by nominations at a special delegates conference a day earlier.

Sossion challenged Oyuu to organise a democratic election process and prepare to face him at the ballot during elections.

The elections will be through secret ballot by all delegates accredited to participate at either the Annual Delegates Conference or a Special Delegates Conference.

“I’m eligible. Oyuu should prepare for a democratic process and accept both our names on the ballot, or alternatively, because he is retired, step aside,” Sossion said.

He criticised what he termed a growing trend of retirees clinging to union leadership.

“We have a bad culture where retirees are running unions. That is wrong. They cannot speak for their grandchildren. I want to face a teacher under 60 on the ballot,” he added.

Sossion, 57, said he would not have contested if a younger teacher had stepped forward to challenge for the secretary general position.

According to Knut’s constitution, every full time officer of the union shall vacate office upon serving his full five-year term in office, age notwithstanding, but will not be eligible for re-election upon attainment of 65 years of age.

Oyuu was 56 when he took over Knut leadership from Sossion in June, 2021.

‪Sossion Gears Up For Return To KNUT‬

Former Kenya National Union of Teachers Secretary-General Wilson Sossion has hinted at a possible return to the helm of the teachers’ union in the upcoming April elections.

Speaking during an interview with TV47, Sossion said he had already met the necessary eligibility requirements and was weighing the appropriate time to formally declare his bid.

“Maybe what is remaining for me is to make a concrete pronouncement, which I will at the right time,” he said.

Sossion served as the Secretary-General of KNUT from December 9, 2013, to June 25, 2021, a period during which he was at the forefront of negotiations and disputes involving teachers and the government.

His tenure was marked by intense engagements with the Teachers Service Commission over issues affecting teachers’ welfare, union membership and labour rights.

During the interview, Sossion maintained that he remains eligible to contest for the union’s top position, noting that the KNUT constitution allows individuals who have served as union officials to run for leadership roles.

“Those who qualify to contest for the Secretary General position in the elections are those who have been officials. I have been a KNUT official in many ranks for over 20 years,” he said.

He further clarified that the secretary-general of a trade union is not required to be an employee in the profession represented by the union, dismissing claims that his previous exit from teaching could lock him out of the race.

“The SG of a union also does not have to be an employee of that trade,” Sossion said.

Sossion revealed that he has already taken steps to ensure his eligibility is not questioned, including formally notifying the current KNUT leadership of his intention to run.

“I have ensured that all the protocols for my eligibility are in place,” he said.

According to the former union boss, he has already written to the current Secretary-General Collins Oyuu informing him of his interest in the seat.

He also disclosed that he had cleared his union dues to remain a fully paid member of the organisation.

“I have written to the KNUT secretary general Collins Oyuu notifying him of my candidature, and my union dues payments are up to date,” Sossion said.

He added that he had gone beyond the minimum requirement in maintaining his membership in the union.

“I am actually the most loyal member of KNUT. I have not just paid up to June 2026, I have also paid supplementary dues,” he stated.

Sossion’s possible return to the KNUT leadership comes after he secured a major legal victory against the Teachers Service Commission. The Court of Appeal of Kenya ruled that the deregistration and termination of the veteran teacher and union leader by the TSC had been carried out unlawfully.

The appellate court found that the disciplinary processes leading to Sossion’s dismissal did not follow mandatory legal procedures, thereby violating employment laws and protections afforded to teachers under Kenya’s labour framework.

The ruling effectively cleared a major legal hurdle that could have hindered Sossion’s eligibility to contest for the union’s top seat.

Sossion confirms ditching Raila for Ruto

ODM nominated MP Wilson Sossion is now set to join United Democratic Alliance (UDA) associated with the Deputy President Dr. William Ruto as he prepares to go for Bomet senatorial seat in 2022. Sossion claimed that the village elders who have endorsed his senate bid also directed him to join a party that resonates with the region as he popularizes his candidature.

“They say charity begins at home. Today in my residence, the elders of Motigo sublocation in Bomet Central have decided to endorse my senate aspirations in 2022. The elders have advised me to stick on the prize and avoid backing any politician but to support DP Ruto in his 2022 presidential bid,” Sossion said.

The former KNUT secretary general had hinted at running on Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) party ticket but has finally made the bold move to join ODM’s arch rival to reap from the influence and support that DP Ruto enjoys in the region.

CCM is owned by former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto, a one time fierce critic of Deputy President William Ruto who also pledged to throw his support behind the country’s second in command’s 2022 bid.

Sossion was nominated to parliament by ODM owner Raila Odinga who is expected to face off with UDA’s Ruto for presidency in 2022. He was however expected to ditch ODM after he was technically ‘kicked out’ of KNUT following a heated battle with the government and Teachers Service Commission but delayed the move that everyone had seen coming.

He is eyeing the Bomet senatorial seat which is currently occupied by Christopher Andrew Langat who has been accusing Governor Hillary Barchok of incompetence. In May 2021, Langat verbally attacked the governor challenging him to sack all health officials at the county over the incompetent manner in which they are running the department.

But Senator Langat has not declared whether he will be going the county’s top seat or defending his senate seat as the outspoken Sossion makes clear his intensions to oust him. Sossion’s move to join Ruto’s party is a big blow to ODM which is desperate for a point man in the region but a boost for DP who has been poaching ODM politicians since 2013.

“I am grateful for the time I have served as nominated MP on ODM ticket. I want to thank my brother Raila Odinga and my colleagues in ODM. Am now seeking UDA ticket to run for Bomet Senatorial seat,” Sossion added.

  • Sossion reduced to a shell ahead of KNUT polls

Sossion reduced to a shell ahead of KNUT polls

Kenya National Union of Teachers national secretary general Wilson Sossion is already sensing defeat a head of the union’s elections due to the rift between him and the acting first national chairman Collins Oyuu.

Sossion’s camp which is considering a power sharing deal is prevailing upon him to step down and let Oyuu go in unopposed. They are arguing that Mr Oyuu who joined Knut in 1996, elected Bondo chairman in 2003 and rose to Rarieda chairman in 2008 is experienced enough to replace the washed out nominated Mp.

Oyuu rose to be a national executive council member in the year 2013 and later as assistant
    secretary general in 2015.

It is doubted that the already ‘ shivering’ Sossion can beat an experienced unionist who grew with him in the union like  Oyuu who began shining when Sossion changed to a hardliner against the union.

Many  teachers have expressed disappointments over his leadership. Only 15 out of 110 branches in the country are supporting Sossion to retain the seat.

But Oyuu is enjoying sycophantic support in Eastern, Nyanza, Central, Nairobi, Western, North Eastern and Rift valley. His camp consider some two regions are battle grounds.

Sossion is fighting many was including on and off beefs with the  Teachers Service Commission chief executive officer Nancy Macharia which has exposed him to the looming defeat.

Even his would be allies like the Bomet branch executive secretary Malel Langat disclosed that less than 10 officials out of 31 officials in his branch are backing Sossion.

The ODM nominated MP is struggling to defending his seat after a majority of national officials accused of being a dictator who runs the union without consultations with his team. Oyuu has joined forces with Mutai to oust Sossion who they accuse of killing the union.

The former Tenwek High School teacher survived several attempts by the government and a section of knut officials  to oust him from his seat. He is also facing a fierce challenge from one Patrick Munuhe  and Stanley Mutai, a long serving national executive council member who is eyeing the national vice chairman seat.

Candidates are now left with a week to campaign with elections set for June 26 2021.

Election’s are coming when close to  300,000 teachers are unsure when their next pay hike will be. Their Collective Bargaining Agreement is is also about to expire.

  • Court Exonerates Wilson Sossion From The TSC Ban

Court Exonerates Wilson Sossion From The TSC Ban

A few weeks ago, Kenya Insights published an Opinion article on The Employment and Labour court and why Sossion is a permanent SG of KNUT.

And again, On Monday, a Nairobi-based Employment and Labour Court nullified a notice that TSC Boss Nancy Macharia had gazetted— in November this year—deregistering embattled KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion as a teacher and banning him from any teaching profession countrywide.

“Pursuant to section 30 of the TSC Act, the Commission has removed the name of the individual named hereunder (Sossion) from the Register of Teachers. Further, under the law, the individual cannot engage in teaching in any school,” read the gazette notice.

Justice Stephen Radido while delivering the ruling at the Employment and Labour Relations Court in Nairobi stated that TSC notice has been set aside and issued a conservatory order reinstating the expunged KNUT boss back to the teacher’s register.

Funny enough, Timon Oyucho, the head of a legal team that was representing TSC and Nancy Macharia said that his clients want to expunge the name of Ms. Macharia from the case.

A move that saw the ageing lawyer Paul Muite, who was representing Wilson Sossion, rant out in court. Lawyer Muite said that the genesis of problems in the TSC is individual because of Nancy Macharia.

Last week, Kenyans On Twitter slammed the embattled TSC Boss for running the commission as if it’s her own house.

  • Labour Court And Why Sossion Is A Permanent SG Of KNUT

Labour Court And Why Sossion Is A Permanent SG Of KNUT

In Kenya, some people pray to get justice, i don’t know if it works, while others buy their own Justice and control our Judiciary like it’s not an Arm of Kenya’s government.

Labour court has been reinstating Wilson Sossion as the SG of KNUT everytime the Unionists converge to face him out. Because, y’all know he’s not retiring anytime soon and doesn’t look like he will either.

Earlier today, the Labour and Relations Court ruled in favour of embattled Secretary General Wilson Sossion. The court ordered that he will remain in the office till his case is determined by the same labour court!

What is this that has made Sosion stick at KnUT like a tic? What is this that the ODM nominated MP is sucking from the Teachers Union? Why is labour court favouring him if he’s not working to improve the Union and the teachers? Who are these that have rather did install him at KNUT and don’t want to see him out?

Sossion had been kicked out of office by a faction led by his deputy Hesbon Otieno, which he challenged in court. And sarcastically he has been reinstated.

The Employment and Labour Relations Court Justice Hellen Wasilwa in today’s ruling stated that the Knut National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in which Sossion was ousted defied a court order stopping his removal.

Justice Wasilwa, in her orders issued on September 2, had reinstated Mr Sossion as the union’s boss until the case he filed is determined.

Activities at the union have been paralysed as leaders fight over positions with staff going for three months without salaries.

On Monday, Mr Sossion claimed the trouble in Knut is as a result of an “external savage attack” on the union’s solidarity.

“For them Knut must be a yes union with no bargaining power. Strike the shepherd and scatter the sheep then feast on them one by one,” Mr Sossion said.

Sossion is not out of the woods yet as he faces another court case. One wonders why is he forcing himself in the Union? How do you protect or fight for the people that are fighting you!

Employment and Labour Relations Court judge will on Friday rule whether Sossion can hold both the positions of a member of Parliament and that of secretary-general in a union.

Justice Maureen Onyango will give the determination in the case filed by seven teachers.

Sossion has made KNUT his retirement shelter just like his mouthy grandpa folk Atwoli has at COTU. Workers are being paid peanuts and Kenyans being enslaved and overworked like donkeys, while they busy jetting abroad to buy new designer clothes and gold chains like they are Trap rappers.

Why suffer and pay to join a Union that at the end of the day is just making one man filthy rich as the entire family of Kenyan workers remain stinging poor?

By the way, Atwoli has sucked workers his stomach is about to burst. He can barely walk. The stomach is twice the weight his legs can carry. Na bado utasikia ikisema yeeees… Yeess to what?

Sossion on the other side is not adding weight nor flesh. The man with over 6 payslips yet nothing is, well he might be eating on the ground, showing. Just wondering, what’s that one thing that Sossion can say he has done for the teachers at KNUT where he has permanently installed himself?

Ama ni kukaza serikali then he get sorted aside then come and start yapping”solidarity forever” to bluff other teachers. He’s a very bad example of Teachers and the teaching system in this country.

Teachers are suffering throughout Kenya and Unionists have gone for 3 months without pay while Sossion remains dictating learned folks. Courts are also a disgrace to entire existence of humanity. Why keep recycling orders to keep these aged out dangling confused Union leaders?
