White House Hits Back at Reports Trump Named in Epstein Files

The White House has pushed back against reports that President Donald Trump is among hundreds of names that appear in justice department documents relating to the late convicted paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein.

The claims were “nothing more than a continuation of the fake news stories concocted by the Democrats and the liberal media”, a White House spokesman said.

It comes as a US judge denied the justice department’s bid to unseal Florida court files on Epstein.

The Trump administration has been under mounting pressure to disclose more information about the well-connected sex offender. While campaigning last year, Trump had promised to release such files.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump’s name appeared multiple times with many others, including other high-profile figures, in records held by the justice department.

Being named in these documents is not evidence of any criminal activity, nor has Trump ever been accused of wrongdoing in connection with the Epstein case.

Attorney General Pam Bondi told Trump in a routine briefing at the White House in February that the files contained hearsay about many people, including Trump, who had socialised with Epstein in the past.

Bondi also told the president that the Epstein records included child pornography and victim information that should not be disclosed, reported the Wall Street Journal.

    Jeffrey Epstein.
    Jeffrey Epstein.

The story was later matched by other US media outlets, but has not been independently verified by the BBC.

Trump was once friendly with Epstein before they fell out in 2004 – two years before Epstein was first arrested.

Last week, the president was asked by a reporter whether the attorney general had told him his name was in the files.

    “No, no,” Trump said.

Steven Cheung, a spokesman for Trump, called the report “nothing more than a continuation of the fake news stories concocted by the Democrats and the liberal media”.

The attorney general said: “Nothing in the files warranted further investigation or prosecution.”

FBI Director Kash Patel said: “The criminal leakers and Fake News media tries tirelessly to undermine President Trump with smears and lies, and this story is no different.”

But an unnamed White House official told Reuters news agency they were not denying that Trump’s name appears in the documents.

The official pointed to Epstein files disclosed months earlier by the justice department that had included Trump.

Those files, distributed to conservative influencers in February, included the phone numbers of some of Trump’s family members, including his daughter.

Trump had directed Bondi to seek the release of all grand jury materials, prompting the justice department to ask courts in Florida and New York to unseal files related to cases in both those jurisdictions.

But Judge Robin Rosenberg ruled on Wednesday that releasing papers from Epstein’s Florida case would violate state guidelines governing grand jury secrecy.

“The court’s hands are tied,” the Obama appointee ruled in her 12-page order.

The transcripts in question stem from Florida’s investigation into Epstein in 2006 that led to him being charged with soliciting a minor for prostitution.

Judge Rosenberg also declined to transfer the issue to New York, where two judges are separately deciding whether to unseal transcripts related to Epstein’s 2019 sex-trafficking probe. That request is still pending.

The ruling comes as interest has switched back to Ghislaine Maxwell, a convicted sex-trafficker who is serving 20 years in prison for helping Epstein abuse young girls.

A senior justice department official is planning to meet the former British socialite to discuss her knowledge of the case, her attorney confirmed to the BBC.

Republicans on the House of Representatives Oversight Committee have sent a legal summons for Maxwell to appear before the body remotely from prison on 11 August.

Her attorney, David Oscar Markus, told the BBC that if she chooses to testify, rather than invoke her constitutional right to remain silent, “she would testify truthfully, as she always has said she would”.

“As for the congressional subpoena, Ms Maxwell is taking this one step at a time,” he added.

“She looks forward to her meeting with the Department of Justice, and that discussion will help inform how she proceeds.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson has warned that Maxwell cannot be trusted to provide accurate testimony.

The Louisiana Republican said: “I mean, this is a person who’s been sentenced to many, many years in prison for terrible, unspeakable, conspiratorial acts and acts against innocent young people.”

Bondi said earlier this month the US justice department had uncovered no “incriminating client list” on Epstein.

She also said he did take his own life in a New York jail in 2019 – despite conspiracies over his death.

Bondi had previously suggested she would make major disclosures in the case, saying she had “a lot of names” and “a lot of flight logs”.

The attorney general’s reversal prompted fury from some of Trump’s most ardent supporters, who called for her to resign.

Democrats have seized on the Republican infighting to accuse the Trump administration of a cover-up.

On Tuesday, Speaker Johnson closed down congressional voting for summer break one day early, in an attempt to stall legislative efforts to force the release of documents related to Epstein.

But Republican rebels in a House Oversight Subcommittee voted on Wednesday afternoon to force the justice department to release the files.

Three Republicans – Nancy Mace, Scott Perry and Brian Jack – joined five Democrats in voting for the subpoena. Two Republicans voted against.

But James Comer, the Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee, must sign it off in order for the legal summons to proceed.

  • Melania Trump Opens Up About Attempts On Ex-President’s Life

Melania Trump Opens Up About Attempts On Ex-President’s Life

(AFP)-The wife of former president Donald Trump told Fox News she was in New York in July when live images of the attack at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania played out on television.

“I ran to the TV, and I rewind it. And I watched it. I was only a few minutes behind… But when I saw it… nobody really knew yet because when you see him on the floor and you don’t know, you don’t know what really happened,” she said.

Trump’s bid for a White House return was upended when Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire at him from a nearby rooftop at the event in Pennsylvania before Crooks was shot dead by a sniper.

Trump’s ear was grazed but he suffered no serious injury.

Melania Trump praised her husband’s Secret Service detail — calling the agents “fantastic” despite criticism over the stunning security failure.

She also briefly recalled her reaction to the suspected second attempt on the 78-year-old Republican’s life at the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida on September 15.

“I think both of the events, they were really miracles. If you really think about it, July 13 was a miracle,” she said.

The reclusive, media-shy former first lady was giving her first television interview in two years to promote her memoir, out on October 8, less than a month before the election that could put her husband back in power.

But while politician’s spouses often take an active role in campaigning, Melania has largely snubbed her husband’s rallies.

The Slovenian former model, 54, was also absent from his court hearings in New York this spring, where he was convicted of 34 fraud felonies as part of a scandal involving hush money payments to a porn star.

She was asked about the various criminal cases Trump was facing, and she criticized an FBI search at the couple’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida in 2022.

“It made me angry, yes. Invasion of privacy. And the way it was done… I was really surprised,” she said after the bureau entered the property to recover classified documents allegedly stored unlawfully.

“You get angry because nobody should be putting up with that kind of stuff. Some person — I don’t know even know who or how many people, they went through my stuff,” she added.

She also questioned the first assassination attempt against her husband because she felt it was being brushed under the carpet by the media.

“I had a lot of questions. What’s going on? This is not normal. And is it really shocking that all this outrageous violence goes against my husband?” she said.

“Especially (when) we hear the leaders from the opposition party and mainstream media branding him as a threat to democracy, calling him vile names… This needs to stop. The country needs to unite.”

The 256-page memoir is entitled simply “Melania,” and a signed version accompanied by photographs sells for $250.

  • Details Of US Secretary of State Blinken Phone Call To Ruto

Details Of US Secretary of State Blinken Phone Call To Ruto

President William Ruto received a call from the White House on Thursday, July 25, amid chaotic protests in Kenya that have lasted for more than weeks.

An ally of Washington, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, spoke with Ruto over the phone, where he underscored the fundamental freedoms of assembly and expression as enshrined in Kenya’s constitution.

In a statement issued by his Spokesperson Matthew Miller, Secretary Blinken emphasized the indispensable role of youth and civil society organizations in fostering healthy democracies and urged respect for their vital contributions to Kenya’s development.

Commending President Ruto, Blinken acknowledged the President’s commitment to accountability for security forces implicated in protest violence or responsible for disappearances. President Ruto’s directive to the police to abstain from any form of violence against protesters was particularly praised.

The Secretary of State also expressed gratitude for Kenya’s substantial contributions to the multinational security support mission in Haiti, recognizing the country’s commitment to global peace and security.

Secretary Blinken also reiterated the United States’ steadfast support for the Kenyan people in their efforts to build a more inclusive and prosperous nation.

The call comes after the Kenyan government wrote to the Ford Foundation demanding answers over funding extended to some organisations in Kenya which the State suspects could have had a hand in the latest protests.

The government of Kenya listed 16 Non-governmental organisations in connection to the protests.

The Ford Foundation, however, defended its funding criteria to the organisations even as it maintained its stand against anarchy.

The Foundation reiterated that while it supports the right of Kenyans to peacefully advocate for a just and equitable country,  they don’t support any acts that advocate violence.

Kenya’s anti-government protests are in their fifth week. Under pressure, Ruto declined to sign the bill imposing new taxes and dismissed almost all Cabinet ministers, but protesters continue to call for his resignation.

At least 50 people have died and 413 others have been injured in the protests since June 18, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights. The political opposition is demanding that families of those killed be compensated and that charges against those arrested during protests be dropped.

Police have stopped saying how many arrests they make in the protests. Rights groups, opposition figures and family members for weeks have expressed concern about alleged abductions by officers.

Police last week banned protests in Nairobi, citing the movement’s lack of clear leadership to coordinate with authorities to ensure safety and security. But the high court issued an order suspending the ban on protests. Kenya’s constitution guarantees the right to peaceful protest.

  • “You’re Doing A Good Job” Biden All Praises For Uhuru During White House Meeting

“You’re Doing A Good Job” Biden All Praises For Uhuru During White House Meeting

Meeting at the White House, Biden and the Kenyan president promised to work together on climate change and ending violence on the Horn of Africa, although there appeared to be no headway on Kenya’s hopes on a trade deal.

Biden announced that the United States would immediately donate another 17 million doses of the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine to the African Union, on top of 50 million doses already sent.

“As a continent we are lagging well behind the rest of the world in terms of being able to vaccinate our people,” Kenyatta told Biden in the Oval Office.

“So any additional support like the president just mentioned is greatly welcomed and we look forward to that continued partnership,” he said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is received at the The White House in Washington DC by his American counterpart, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.

Biden has vowed a leadership role for Washington on vaccines at a time that infections remain stubbornly high in parts of the United States where people refuse widely available shots.

Most of sub-Saharan Africa has vaccination rates in the single digits, at the mercy of foreign donations due to the lack of indigenous production and prohibitive costs of mass purchases.

Kenyatta is the first African leader to visit Biden’s White House amid a slowdown of travel and summits as a Covid-19 precaution.

“I’m committed to further elevating our ties with Kenya and nations across Africa as a whole. But Kenya is the key,” Biden said.

    ‘Doing a good job’

Biden has promised a new focus on democracy after the courting of autocratic leaders by his predecessor Donald Trump — who also made no secret of his lack of interest in Africa.

Long seen as a pillar of stability, Kenya was wracked by political violence including after 2017 elections but Kenyatta has since made peace with his once-bitter rival Raila Odinga.

Kenyatta, who has vowed to fight corruption, came days after the Pandora Papers investigation which found that Kenyatta, together with six family members, owned a network of 11 offshore companies, one valued at $30 million.

Biden did not address the allegations during the brief appearance before reporters but called for “strengthening financial transparency” and praised Kenyatta’s record.

“I want to thank you for your leadership in defending the peace, security and democratic instincts of the region and your country,” Biden said. “You’re doing a good job.”

Aligned on climate, shift on trade

Kenya is the current president of the UN Security Council and in that capacity as pushed to end fighting in neighbouring Ethiopia, where hundreds of thousands of people are facing extreme hunger.

Kenya is a longstanding US security partner, working closely in another neighbor, Somalia, in combatting Al-Shabaab jihadists.

Kenyatta said he was speaking to Biden about the “fight against terrorism” but also about climate change, ahead of a high-stakes UN conference in Glasgow next month.

“Our country, our continent is the least in terms of emitting but pays the highest price,” Kenyatta said, welcoming Biden’s commitment on climate change since taking over from Trump.

Kenyatta also made a pitch on trade. The Trump administration began talks with Kenya on a free-trade deal; little progress was made but Biden has shown scant sign even of restarting talks amid a growing domestic backlash against big-ticket accords.

Trade “is vital not only in terms of further entrenching American interests on the continent but also in helping us achieve our social-economic agenda,” Kenyatta said.

President Kenyatta, who is on an official visit to the US, is the first African Head of State to be hosted by President Joe Biden since assuming office on 20th January this year.

A senior US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Biden administration would be “working closely” with Kenya on trade but acknowledged: “We are thinking through how we approach foreign trade.”

Kenya is worried as the landmark African Growth and Opportunity Act, which lets sub-Saharan nations with good governance export without duties to the vast US market, is set to expire in 2025.

  • What Biden And Uhuru Discussed In The White House Meeting

What Biden And Uhuru Discussed In The White House Meeting

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday made history by becoming the first African Head of State to be hosted by President Joe Biden at the White House since the American leader took over office in January this year.

At the historic meeting, President Biden announced a US Government donation of 17 million more Covid-19 vaccines to the African Union.

“And we’re continuing our shared fight against Covid. The United States has donated 2.8 million doses of vaccine to Kenya as part of the 50 million doses we’ve donated to the African Union (AU).

“And I’m proud to announce that—today, that we’re making an additional historic one-time donation of 17 more million doses of J&J vaccine to the AU, and we’re going to be sending some more of these by the end of the year to Kenya,” President Biden said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is received at the The White House in Washington DC by his American counterpart, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.

President Kenyatta thanked the American Government for the continued assistance to Kenya and the African continent in the fight against Covid-19, and welcomed the additional donation of 17 million doses to the AU noting that Africa was struggling to access adequate vaccines.

“Let me also take this opportunity, through you, to thank your government and the people of the United States. During this very difficult time, the United States has done its best to step up in terms of not only helping Kenya, but the African continent in general, with regard to access to vaccines.

“I’m happy to hear your new announcement of that increase, because as many of you will know, as a continent, we are lagging well behind the rest of the world in terms of being able to vaccinate our people.

“So, any additional support, like the President (Joe Biden) has just mentioned, is greatly welcomed, and we look forward to that continued partnership,” President Kenyatta said.

Besides Covid-19, the leaders also discussed the global fight against terrorism, climate change as well as trade and investment among other subjects of mutual interest to Kenya and the US.

On the war against terrorism, President Kenyatta applauded the US for being a strong partner for Kenya.

“We’re also very closely partnering, especially in regard to the fight against terrorism globally. The United States has been a very strong partner to Kenya in that particular fight,” he said.

The Kenyan leader said his country had made tremendous progress in climate change adaptation and mitigation, and welcomed the US back to the Paris Agreement.

“We are also keenly very grateful with his strong position, especially with regard to climate change. This is an area where Kenya has made tremendous progress in her own right and where we are firmly committed to the Paris Agreement, and we’re glad to see the United States has now rejoined,” President Kenyatta said.

He said Kenya was keen on deepening its trade and investment relations with the US by investing in partnerships that promote American business interests while advancing the country’s socioeconomic transformation agenda.

“Keenly also wanting to engage, as we have been already, with the President on the issue of trade and investment between our two countries. This, I believe, is vital not only in terms of further entrenching American interests on the continent, but also in helping us also achieve our socio-economic agenda,” President Kenyatta said.

President Kenyatta, who is on an official visit to the US, is the first African Head of State to be hosted by President Joe Biden since assuming office on 20th January this year.

On his part, President Biden hailed Kenya’s steadfastness in safeguarding regional stability and advancing democracy saying the Kenya-US partnership was key in addressing global peace and security challenges.

“And, you know, the US-Kenya strategic partnership is essential—we both, I think, believe is essential to addressing key regional and global challenges.

“And I want to thank Kenya for your thank you for your leadership in defending the peace, security, and democratic instincts of the region and your country. You’re doing a heck of a job,” President Biden said.

The White House meeting was a culmination of President Kenyatta’s successful official visit of the US during which he chaired his first United Nations Security Council meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York.

President Kenyatta was accompanied to the White House by Cabinet Secretaries Raychelle Omamo (Foreign Affairs) and Betty Maina (Trade) as well as Trade PS Johnson Weru and Kenya’s Ambassador to Washington Lazarus Amayo.

  • Biden To Welcome Uhuru In White House As First African Leader To Visit In His Presidency

Biden To Welcome Uhuru In White House As First African Leader To Visit In His Presidency

Joe Biden will welcome Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday, in the first visit by an African leader to the White House during his presidency.

The summit will be part of “Biden’s commitment to the US partnership with Africa based on principles of mutual respect and equality,” a White House statement said Tuesday.

It said Biden and Kenyatta would discuss “the need to bring transparency and accountability to domestic and international financial systems,” amid a push by the Biden administration to fight both corruption and inequities overseas.

The two will also “discuss efforts to defend democracy and human rights, advance peace and security, accelerate economic growth and tackle climate change,” the White House said.

Biden has vowed to promote democracy overseas. Once-stable Kenya saw deadly political violence after 2017 elections, but Kenyatta has since made up with his former rival Raila Odinga.

Biden took office vowing a new commitment to Africa after the disinterest of his predecessor Donald Trump, who was the first president in decades not to visit sub-Saharan Africa.

But Biden has only gone on one international trip and has trimmed the number of visitors at the White House amid continued precautions against Covid-19.

Much of the Biden administration’s attention in Africa has turned to Ethiopia, a longtime US ally that has disappointed Washington with a nearly year-old offensive in the Tigray region.

Ethiopia launched the operation late last year in response to attacks on an army camp by the then ruling party in Tigray, where UN officials say that hundreds of thousands are facing severe hunger.

Kenyatta, speaking Tuesday after a UN Security Council meeting on Ethiopia, called for “an immediate cessation of hostilities by both sides.”

“We do not believe that there is a military solution, and we need to urgently have all parties coming across the table in order for us to be able to ensure that all humanitarian corridors are actually opened,” he told reporters.

“We will continue to push — not just as Kenya, as a neighbor and a member of the Security Council but also through the African Union.”-AFP.
