How Raila Odinga Crushed ODM Succession Talks

Since Raila Odinga’s loss in the 2022 presidential election, speculation about his retirement has been rampant.

The debate intensified after he announced plans to vie for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship in February 2025.

Meanwhile, key figures within his Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) began vying for leadership positions, each eyeing the possibility of succeeding the opposition veteran.

However, Raila’s recent moves to reorganize ODM’s leadership and nominate key allies to President William Ruto’s Cabinet reveal his intentions to remain politically active, even as the succession race heats up.

How Raila Odinga Crushed ODM Succession Talks

The Battle for ODM Leadership and the AUC Seat

Earlier this year, loyal members of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) fiercely competed to succeed him. Hassan Joho, the Mining Cabinet Secretary, gathered support from the Coast and North Eastern regions. Meanwhile, Cooperatives CS Wycliffe Oparanya secured backing from his allies in Western Kenya.

Both Joho and Oparanya, former ODM deputy leaders, felt they were the right candidates to lead after Raila’s retirement. But Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi, who was leading the Azimio coalition in Parliament, was the favorite among Nyanza lawmakers.

Wandayi even gained the endorsement of Raila’s elder brother, Senator Oburu Oginga, who said Wandayi was closest to Raila’s heart. National Treasury CS John Mbadi also threw his hat in the ring, supported by Raila’s wife, Ida Odinga.

The competition among these four men reflected their ambitions to lead ODM. However, Raila seemed reluctant to pass the leadership baton.

To manage these ambitions, he endorsed both Joho and Oparanya to lead in his absence. But recently, Raila removed all four from the leadership equation by nominating them to President William Ruto’s Cabinet.

Since the law prevents Cabinet Secretaries from holding party positions, they were effectively sidelined. Days ago, Raila introduced a new leadership lineup for ODM. He hinted that despite his potential AUC position, he would remain active in politics.

Raila reassured his supporters, saying he could easily fly to Addis Ababa in just two hours and would continue advising his chosen deputies.

Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, and Kisii Governor Simba Arati were appointed as Raila’s deputies.

The move to appoint three deputies was seen as an effort to calm different factions within ODM and reduce any direct challenge to Raila’s authority.

If Raila is unsuccessful in his AUC bid, he can easily return to lead ODM. If he wins, he will remain in touch with party affairs.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna retained his role as ODM’s secretary general. Raila has described this position as the “heart of the party,” highlighting Sifuna’s close alliance with him.

Initially, Sifuna was considered for the deputy party leader role, but the creation of multiple deputy positions diluted its power.

In other changes, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga was appointed as chairperson, signaling her potential for future leadership.

Notably missing from this reshuffle was Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, a vocal politician who is seen as a potential future leader in Nyanza.

Although Babu has tried to secure a more influential role within ODM, he is still viewed as a junior member of the party.

According to Timothy Onduru, a university history lecturer, Babu is relatively new to politics, and there are more experienced leaders who are better suited to take over.

Despite this, Babu’s frequent visits to Nyanza and his charismatic appeal make him a notable figure in the region’s politics.

Babu has already started charting his political path. He is part of a group of young MPs, known as “team ground,” who see themselves as an alternative to Raila’s alliance with President Ruto.

Last Friday, Babu led a group of lawmakers in criticizing the president’s handling of issues raised by young protesters. Quoting former South African President Nelson Mandela, he hinted at his own presidential ambitions.

For now, Babu’s immediate goal is to unseat Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja in 2027. However, Raila seems to prefer Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi for the position, creating a hurdle for Babu. Dr. Onduru suggests that Raila’s reluctance to support Babu is due to his tendency to “go overboard.”

Raila has often been criticized for not grooming successors and for sidelining those with bright political futures. Political analysts argue that Raila appears hesitant to hand over control, both within ODM and the Azimio coalition.

Coast ODM Leaders Rally Behind Joho For 2027 President

The leaders said it was time Coast had their own in the race to statehouse so as to become the sixth president of the Republic of Kenya.

Speaking during food distribution exercise for Muslims during the Holy Month of Ramadhan at Nidhamia hall in Malindi attended by over 10 legislators including Senators, Women Reps and MPs for Kilifi, Mombasa and Kwale the leaders openly told Joho who was present to soldier on his agenda as he had the full backing of the leaders.

Also present were a host of MCA s from Mombasa Kilifi and Kwale together with ODM Youth Fikirini Jacobs, among others.

Joho while accepting the endorsement since his declaration of interest to become president others have begun telling him to go slow and talk with others.

He said it’s time for him to become the party leader and will not step back until he becomes president.

Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo on his part urged Coast resident to desist from being divided on political grounds and remain united to make sure Joho becomes president.

He said once Raila goes to the AUC then he should be succeeded by Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho.

“Of all those who want to succeed Raila no one matches Joho, no one, so all of us as brothers lets unite and ensure we support Joho,” he said.

The Vocal Malindi Member of Parliament Amina Mnyazi openly told the constituents to allow her to accompany joho in his countrywide campaigns for his presidency as she was determined to see him win the top seat.

A section of Coast ODM leadership endorsing Joho.

She said it’s time for Coastal leaders to come together and show full support for Joho’s presidential bid as he was the only leader to take the region to another level.

“We want all of you and even the Media to ensure that Joho is all over the social media mainstream media like NTV Citizen, all of the other mainstream media,” he said.

Mombasa Woman Rep Zamzam Mohamed and Likoni MP Mishi Mboko said the Whole Coast region was supporting Joho and asked all leaders to support his bid.

Kilifi Woman Rep Getrude Mbeyu said the former Mombasa Governor is over qualified as education was fine, and is also wealthy.

“It’s only Joho who can defeat President Ruto . He does not fear anything and is the only one who took the former President Uhuru Kenyatta head on in Mombasa previously,” she said.

Shela Ward MCA Twahir Abdulkharim urged all ODM leaders to support Joho as he was the only one who had the muscles to defeat President Ruto.

Magarini MP Harrison Kombe said immediately ODM Party leader Raila Odinga becomes the AUC chairman Joho should take the mantle.

“If the country is one lets shun from tribalism the ODM party leader is Joho,” he said.

Fikirini Jacobs ODM Youth from Kilifi County said its time for Coast to produce the president and urged all Coastal leaders to support him for his bid as he has fought hard to be where he is today.

  • Major Political Clash Looms In Kisumu As ODM Delegates Endorse Nyong’o As Gubernatorial Candidate

Major Political Clash Looms In Kisumu As ODM Delegates Endorse Nyong’o As Gubernatorial Candidate

A major political clash now looms in Kisumu county after more than 1500 delegates drawn from the seven sub-counties in Kisumu County endorsed Prof Anyang Nyongo’s re-election as governor.

The delegates declared that governor Nyong’o will be their flag bearer for the position signalling that there will be no nominations for the gubernatorial seat in the county.

The delegates backed Nyong’o based on the projects, he initiated during his first term in office saying he deserved a second term to complete the projects.

Speaker of Kisumu County Assembly Elisha Oraro led in the declaration when he presided over a motion tabled by Majority Leader Kenneth Onyango, who sought the delegates’ approval of the proposal to field Nyong’o as the ODM flag bearer in the August 9 general election.

This means Nyong’o therefore shall be given a direct ticket to vie for the second term.

The motion was seconded by Beatrice Odongo, Aslam Khan, Gard Olima and Deputy Speaker Joachim Oketch.

But the move is likely to set ODM leadership on a collision course in the coming days after a section of the party members endorsed former Chief Administrative Secretary for East Africa Community Ken Obura to face Nyong’o in the party primaries.

Obura who received backing from former governor Jack Ranguma, former Speaker Onyango Oloo and Kisumu Senator Fred Outa, pledged to mount a well oiled and structured campaign to counter Nyong’o.

Obura termed the endorsement as an affront to democracy saying people should be let free to pick leaders of their choice.

“It is now appearing as if ODM leadership is imposing candidates on the people instead of allowing them to pick leaders of their choice,” he said.

Obura also dismissed Nyong’o’s endorsement terming it ‘skewed’. “The endorsement was pre-planned and we won’t accept it. It’s not binding to all. It’s skewed and we shall take the protest to the party headquarters’ doorstep,” he vowed.

Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya, however tactfully told Nyong’o that he will receive full backing after nominations perhaps distancing himself from the open endorsement.

  • Scandal Ridden Ketraco Boss Fernades Barasa Runs Away With Sh800M Power Saga Hanging On His Neck

Scandal Ridden Ketraco Boss Fernades Barasa Runs Away With Sh800M Power Saga Hanging On His Neck

For three consecutive days last week, the National Assembly’s Public Investments Committee (PIC) was unable to extract any information from senior officials of three government entities on the State’s dealings with the Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) company.

By coincidence or design, officials from National Treasury, Kenya Power and the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco)were at a loss when they appeared before the committee, and in the end, failed to provide substantive information that the MPs were seeking.

They all asked for more time to gather all the required documents as well as prepare coherent statements for presentation.

This did not go down well with the MPs, who now feel that the State agencies are not taking the committee and the probe seriously. The chairman noted, separately, that each of the firms has had months to prepare for the committee sitting, having been notified last year.

While it could be coincidence that officials from Treasury and the energy sector players were unable to offer what the committee sought, it could also have to do with the subject matter.

The parliamentary committee has been probing the Lake Turkana Wind Power project after the Auditor General submitted to the House a special audit report that points to grave mistakes that were committed by government officials and have proved costly for the country.

Last week, the State officials performed a dance of sorts with the committee, responding to its queries in a shallow manner and without offering the details sought, while also failing to attach key documents to the reports they presented in Parliament.

“Allow me to look into the documentation and get back to the committee with the exact reason as to why this was the case,” said Kenya Power acting Chief Executive Rosemary Oduor in response to a number of queries that the committee posed to her on Thursday.

On Wednesday, National Treasury Principal Secretary Julius Muia did not provide the required information either, including attachments to the statement that he presented.

He said if allowed more time, Treasury would provide a “blow by blow account of the events” leading to the selection of LTWP to put up the plant in Marsabit County.

The previous day, Ketraco’s acting boss Anthony Wamukota appeared before PIC but also requested for more time. In his case, he wanted to familiarise himself with the responses that he said had been prepared by his predecessor, Fernandes Barasa.

Mr Barasa had resigned a day earlier (on Monday) reportedly to go into politics, but the MPs read mischief in his sudden exit, noting that he was the one supposed to appear before the committee.

MPs also argued that Eng Wamukota had been a general manager at Ketraco and should be familiar with what Barasa had authored and in a position to own it.

Wamukota responded that while he was a general manager under Baraza, he only contributed a segment of the report that the CEO had written to the committee and was not familiar with what other managers had given.

    Fernades Barasa Role

There are credible reports that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is not taking the matter lightly and apparently detectives have been assigned to the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) over suspected embezzlement of taxpayers money through inflated contracts and fraudulent payments days sudden resignation of immediate former Managing Director Fernandes Barasa.

According to insiders who revealed the tense situation at Ketraco intimated that Barasa, internal auditors and senior managers from Finance and Supply chain at the Kawi House domiciled parastatal are among those cited as persons of interests.

While at Ketraco, Fernades was ever living on the edge and never had ease more so with anti-corruption heatwave that saw him spend most of the time out of his office.

For those familiar with his running, it was surprising that he quickly opted to resign a day before he was expected to appear before the Parliament’s Public Investments Committee (PIC) to answer questions over the Sh785 million special audit on the Lake Turkana Wind Power (LTWP) project.

Not new to sweating and in fear of being arrested, Barasa was in the news sometime in August 2019 when the heavily built short man ran for his life a city hotel.

DCI boss Kinoti had walked into the hotel where Barasa was in company of other friends, he fled to the kitchen of the hotel on spitting Kinoti fearing that he had come to arrest him. At the time, Ketraco was under DCI probe following complaints lodged that the agency officials had swindled Sh14B land compensation to farmers for the Mombasa-Nairobi electricity transmission line, detectives believe billions were swindled in kickbacks.

However, Kinoti was on a different business and not to arrest the panicked CEO who fled away through the kitchen’s exit. He became a laughing stock amongst his peers.

    Scandalous Path

Upon assuming office, for the first time in Ketraco’s history, Barasa announced multi-million controversial tender bids for provision of insurance brokerage services for all its substations countrywide three months after the exit of his predecessor Engineer Joel Kiilu.

Ketraco is one of the key parastatals under the Energy ministry-attracting heavy financing from the government and foreign donors majorly Japan and World Bank for mega electricity transmission projects across the country.

Currently, the firm controls an asset base of over Sh72billion.

This comes at a time the firm is entangled in a longstanding compensation deadlock with Kajiado residents over alleged varying compensation for the same pieces of land which has the same land value and assertions that Ketraco is hiving off more land than the one agreed on the agreement by colluding with surveyors.

Locals swore to block any undertaking to use their land as power way-leave until they are adequately reimbursed.

Ketraco offered to pay Kajiado Maasai landowners Sh250, 000 per acre.

Further, residents’ claim Ketraco has already confiscated title deeds and put caveats to the parcels of land in question.

Before compensation, the National land Commission (NLC) must make approval.

The land in question was owned by Olosho-Oibor Water Catchment Area, which Ketraco had to compensate for limiting its usage due to the construction of a transmission line from Suswa to Isinya that requires a 60-metre wayleave.

However, locals claim they were offered compensation at a rate of 40 per cent while Makueni County residents were being given 85 per cent.

Another scandal left on the face of Barasa is that of China CAMC Engineering Co. Ltd  that moved to court to stop Ketraco from proceeding with an award of Sh1.9 billion tender to a rival firm for the erection of underground power transmission cables.

China CAMC Engineering Co. Ltd says in court documents that unless the court intervenes and stops the contract, Kenyans will lose in excess of Sh403 million.

It is not by surprise that in a similar scenario of the recent pylons sabotage that caused power outage in all parts of the country was intentional by the cartels in Ketraco and Kenya power to reap big in the tender process of new pylons procurement. Why Ketraco decided to award a firm a tender that would have been Sh. 403 million less when both the firms have the same caliber and of the same origin only means that the excess 403 million is kickback pocketed by Ketraco officials and the power cartels.

Barasa is expected to vie for Kakamega Gubernatorial seat, a position that he spent much of his time in office campaigning for. He will be going with ODM ticket. Party insiders are however hesitant to fully embrace him as he’s perceived to be a baggage given his heavily loaded corrupt trail, ODM has warned candidates with integrity issues could face axe for the party to maintain its face.

Polls however, rank Barasa amongst the leading contenders alongside Bonnie Khalwale and Cleophas Malala to takeover Kakamega County from the incumbent Wycliffe Oparanya.

EACC insists all candidates seeking public office must pass the integrity test and if that’s the case, it would be travesty to justice if Barasa cut above the bar given all the hanging financial hanging questions.

Going for a public office, the past record in public service would therefore be a key benchmark.

  • Orengo-Junet war that threatens to split Raila campaign team

Orengo-Junet war that threatens to split Raila campaign team

Bitter war has exploded between Siaya SenatorJames Orengo and Suna East MP Mohammed Junet who are both sycophantic supporters of ODM leader Raila Odinga who is planning to give a fifth stab at presidency. Orengo has not been happy with Junet who is now Odinga’s most trusted follower since the much hyped ‘Handshake’ between the ODM leader and President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2018 where Junet accompanied Mr Odinga while Orengo was left in the darkness. In 2008 Orengo was Raila’s aide and wwas instrumental during the formation of grand coalition government with President Mwai Kibaki.

But  Orengo’s growing jealousy was later made serious after the loudmouth Junet made a loose remark during a Odinga’s campaign tour in Kisii where he said that Kikuyus will be treated like outsiders in Odinga’s government. The unwarranted comment pushed Orengo to hire goons and  local  MCAs to heckle the Suna East lawmaker who was to accompany Odinga to a similar rally in Kisumu but he skipped after getting the wind of Orengo’s dirty schemes. The senator wanted Kisumu youths to demand that Raila drops Junet from his campaign team.

Junet’s closer relationship with Raila Odinga also saw him being chosen to co-chair the Building Bridges Initiative secretariat with former Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru who represented Uhuru/Kieleweke wing making it apparent that Odinga trusts Junet over Luo politicians. That favoritism has made him an enemy of irrelevant Luo politicians led by Senator James Orengo who is leading a cocoon of Luo politicians in ODM are now claiming that their tribal party has been taken hostage by outsiders.

ODM’s  two deputy leaders are governors Hassan Joho of Mombasa County and Wycliffe Oparanya of Kakamega County, the secretary general is Edwin Sifuna who hails from Bungoma County but Junet has pocketed a couple of Luo politicians like Omondi Gwonyo to spy around other Luo politicians and report back to him.

Orengo is leading the same clique that accused Odinga and Junet of falling for a raw deal on the distribution of the 70 constituencies in the collapsed BBI that were designed to benefit the Mt. Kenya region. He also led a section of Nyanza politicians including Otiende Amollo (Rarieda), Samuel Atand and Aduma Owuor (Nyakach) who campaigned against the BBI document across Nyanza region arguing that Luos were being shortchanged through BBI.

Gwonyo noted that when the BBI collapsed at the Court of Appeal Senator Orengo and his team celebrated their vindication as they placed Junet on the chopping board for ‘finishing’ Raila.

  • Did Joho use and dump Luos after re-election?

Did Joho use and dump Luos after re-election?

Coast region council of Luo elders led by chairman Obara Kings has raised concerns over the  community being used to top up numbers during elections in Mombasa but fail to feature in the major appointments at the county executive. Obara who is pointing accusing fingers at the administration of Governor Hassan Joho that turned a blind a blind eye to the community after his 2017 re-election voed that they will vet all Mombasa gubernatorial aspirants before making a decision on who to back in the 2022 race.

“As a community, we cannot be supporting people to gain leadership and then we become mere spectators. That is why this time round, we are listening to all the aspirants to hear what they have on offer for the community before we make a collective decision. We cannot allow to be used and dumped again,” Obara said.

Luos form one of the most politically active communities in Mombasa politics with a considerably good numbers to demand a proper share of the county government. They are the most vocal  and best at attending rallies in big numbers. They also participate in elections actively compared to Coastal natives like the Swahilis who stay indoors and follow political events on television, radio and social media.

Obara’s sentiments have been backed by  Tom Ogwanjo, Doris Ndege, Joseph Adul, and Hamisi Jasuba who are also keen to rope in other upcountry communities together to get a share of elective seats in Mombasa where ODM party still remains the most popular. The group also argues that the Luos living in Mombasa are the most instrumental in propping and sustaining the leadership of Governor Ali Hassan Joho whose term  will expire in  August 2022.

They further claim that their community has some numerical strength to bargain for plum positions as they point at a case in 2017 general elections when the Mijikenda community led by 98,000 votes, Kambas by 60,000 votes, Luos and Gemas had 50,000 votes, Somali 30,000, Luhya 25,000, Swahili 23,000, Taita 15,000, Kalenjin 10,000 and others 38,000 votes bringing the numbers to 409,000. The native Mijikendas are the largest voting bloc in Mombasa but fail to  participate during elections as majority of them retreat to their rural homes for fear of electoral violence the same way Kambas do.

Drawing backing to the villages by the two communities always leave Luos to dominate elections in Mombasa like in 2013 general election when Luos produced several MCAs and had three of their own were appointed to the county government of Mombasa as ministers. They also bagged the speaker’s slot following negotiations with Joho prior to those elections but the same as not the  case after the governor’s re-election in 2017.

Luos were consumed by Raila Odinga politics and failed to negotiate with Joho for more  appointments after the 2017 polls despite the massive support they gave Joho. They were used and left out Joho’s second term line up.

  • Sossion confirms ditching Raila for Ruto

Sossion confirms ditching Raila for Ruto

ODM nominated MP Wilson Sossion is now set to join United Democratic Alliance (UDA) associated with the Deputy President Dr. William Ruto as he prepares to go for Bomet senatorial seat in 2022. Sossion claimed that the village elders who have endorsed his senate bid also directed him to join a party that resonates with the region as he popularizes his candidature.

“They say charity begins at home. Today in my residence, the elders of Motigo sublocation in Bomet Central have decided to endorse my senate aspirations in 2022. The elders have advised me to stick on the prize and avoid backing any politician but to support DP Ruto in his 2022 presidential bid,” Sossion said.

The former KNUT secretary general had hinted at running on Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) party ticket but has finally made the bold move to join ODM’s arch rival to reap from the influence and support that DP Ruto enjoys in the region.

CCM is owned by former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto, a one time fierce critic of Deputy President William Ruto who also pledged to throw his support behind the country’s second in command’s 2022 bid.

Sossion was nominated to parliament by ODM owner Raila Odinga who is expected to face off with UDA’s Ruto for presidency in 2022. He was however expected to ditch ODM after he was technically ‘kicked out’ of KNUT following a heated battle with the government and Teachers Service Commission but delayed the move that everyone had seen coming.

He is eyeing the Bomet senatorial seat which is currently occupied by Christopher Andrew Langat who has been accusing Governor Hillary Barchok of incompetence. In May 2021, Langat verbally attacked the governor challenging him to sack all health officials at the county over the incompetent manner in which they are running the department.

But Senator Langat has not declared whether he will be going the county’s top seat or defending his senate seat as the outspoken Sossion makes clear his intensions to oust him. Sossion’s move to join Ruto’s party is a big blow to ODM which is desperate for a point man in the region but a boost for DP who has been poaching ODM politicians since 2013.

“I am grateful for the time I have served as nominated MP on ODM ticket. I want to thank my brother Raila Odinga and my colleagues in ODM. Am now seeking UDA ticket to run for Bomet Senatorial seat,” Sossion added.

  • Inside JichoPevu’s war with former allies

Inside JichoPevu’s war with former allies

The vocal Nyali MP Mohamed Ali aka Jichopevu is embroiled in a bitter war with the men who managed his 2017 campaigns.

His former chief campaigners are now ganging up with his political rivals like the family of Mombasa governor Hassan Joho and other Deep State toadies like the ODM party whose candidate he beat in 2017.

JichoPevu is former ODM ally who was rigged out in shambolic party primaries where Joho’s cousin (Said Abdalla) was favored but Ali still went on to clinch Nyali seat as an independent candidate. Infact he won against the hype and influence Joho, Raila Odinga and ODM had in Mombasa at the time.

Ali then became a full time ODM critic in post 2017 politics where he is associated with UDA Party and the deputy president, Dr.  William Ruto, who will face off with Raila Odinga for presidency in 2022.

He is one of the vocal and visible politicians championing UDA politics and DP’s ‘Hustler narrative’ in Mombasa where ODM still has a considerable support.

    Said Abdalla [p/courtesy]
Ali also brags that he has performed better than former ODM MPs who did nothing for the constituency.

The MP has been sharing photos of rehabilitated schools online earning him support from a good section of the electorate who are praising him for properly implementing projects through the NGCDF.

Ali was however criticized by a section of Kenyans last year when he announced through tweeter that a soon-to-be-opened girls high school in Nyali was named after him.

“The First Girls Sec School in Nyali constituency since independence opening its doors on 13th Jan 2020. #MjingaNimimi,”Ali wrote in a tweet accompanied by pictures of the school.

Netizens who were not impressed with the move argued that the school deserved a neutral name since it was built using public funds.

But his former chief campaigners argue that he as underperformed and only sharing the same old photo to hoodwink the people. They also accuse Jichopevu of refusing to assist bereaved families in Nyali Constituency, a role the MP says is not part of his job.

And that bitterness is expected to extend to the ballot where they have vowed to teach Ali a lesson. They will gang up behind ODM’s Said Abdalla, the Mr. Money bag who is also implementing community projects targeting the youth.

Jichopevu will also face Millicent Adhiambo, Mark Osewe and Joshua Andere who will divide the ODM vote in Nyali and hand him an easy win.

  • ODM cooking reasons to kick-out Joho

ODM cooking reasons to kick-out Joho

All has not been well between Mombasa governor Hassan Joho and handlers of ODM party leader Raila Odinga since the party lost Msambweni parliamentary seat in a by-election held in November last year. Joho, a one time ardent supporter and defender of the ODM leader is now considered a baggage with the party luminaries sidelining him with his presidential bid.

The outgoing Mombasa governor who has missed in Raila’s recent events is accused of secretly financing Kilifi governor Amason Kingi who is championing the formation of a political party with coastal roots. Kingi was recently kick out as the ODM chairman, Kilifi branch, barely a month after two political parties (Pamoja Alliance and Kenya Democracy for Change) from the Coast were handed provisional certificates.

Raila’s handlers also claim that their party leader is rebranding himself to appeal to the international community thus can’t be spotted with characters like Joho who has been widely mentioned in drug trafficking and tax evasion scandals. They also claim that the flashy governor is linked to criminal characters and is in bad books with the western powers.

Kilifi governor Amason Kingi. Raila recently kicked him from ODM [p/courtesy]

Joho has been the face of ODM in the coastal region where the party bagged majority of elective seats in 2013 and 2017 general elections with Kilifi having all its leaders elected on ODM party ticket.

The plot to kick out Joho is also fueled by the fact that Coast governors who are serving their second and final terms including Kwale’s Salim Mvurya – have been seeking new alliances to remain relevant in the post 2022 politics. Both Joho and Kingi have declared interests for presidency with the support of Raila whom they have backed in the three previous elections.

Joho, businessman Jimi Wanjigi and Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya have all applied for the ODM’s presidential ticket but the party’s election board is planning to announce fresh applications before it hands the ticket to Raila Odinga.

The once vocal politician will be forced to follow his Kilifi counterpart before he makes up his mind to leave the Odinga -led party which has also been abandoned by Kingi allies including Kilifi ODM youth league chairman Samir Nyundo who resigned from ODM citing lack of inclusivity and development for the region.

  • Imwatok risking jail term over illegal firearm case

Imwatok risking jail term over illegal firearm case

The controversial Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok is facing a possible sentence to prison on August 24 2021 [today] after he was found possession of a firearm without a licence. Milimani Law Court senior resident magistrate Carolyne Njagi found that Imwatok had a case to answer after she received testimonies from six witnesses presented by state prosecutor Winnie Moraa.

“Upon receiving all the defence submissions, I will make my pronouncement on August 24, 2021 in open court,” Ms Njagi.

Imwatok is facing four charges including the illegal possession ammunition and a fake firearm’s licence. The MCA elected on ODM party ticket committed the offence on September 10 2017 in Galitos Restaurant, Industrial Area, Nairobi, where he was found in possession of a Ceska pistol.

The prosecution also told the court that the tainted MCA also had 13 rounds of live ammunition of 9mm caliber without a licence and a forged firearm certificate No7036 but Imwatok denied all the four counts and secured his freedom on a Sh200,000 bond with one surety of the same amount. The court also gave him an alternative cash bail of Sh50,000.

Raila men accuse Wanjigi of engaging in premature campaigns

ODM luminaries allied to the opposition chief Raila Odinga have accused businessman Jimi Wanjigi of engaging in early campaigns, contrary to the provisions of the electoral laws and party doctrines.

Wanjigi is eyeing ODM party’s presidential ticket against Raila Odinga and Mombasa governor Hassan Joho to run in next year’s general election.

The group led by ODM Chairman John Mbadi on Monday dismissed the meetings the tycoon has been holding with the party delegates claiming that the party’s election’s board has not ratified the list of the representatives.

“The party’s election board has not ratified the common and authentic list of delegates for those who wish to contest the presidency on an ODM ticket. The board will announce the time for campaigns,” said Mbadi said.

Wanjigi met a group of suspected ODM delegates at Aberdare Country Club in Nyeri on August 8, at Aberdare Country Club in Nyeri County who declared their support for his presidential bid.

Mbadi who believes that ODM’s presidential ticket belongs to party owner Raila Odinga dismissed the members allied to Wanjigi as sycophants but not party delegates.

The Suba South law maker called on Wanjigi to wait until the party announces the legitimate delegates before he embarks on his premature presidential campaigns.

The agitated MP further called on those seeking ODM’s presidential ticket to wait until the list is out to lock out the ticket from falling to individuals he described as conmen.

Mbadi also clarified that that many top luminaries of the party have been rattled by Wanjigi’s move.

“It is not yet time for campaigns. The ODM elections board is in the process of harmonizing the list of delegates before embarking on grassroots election across the country.” Mbadi added.

Mbadi who is a key ally of Raila Odinga was angered by Wanjigi’s move to open an ODM party offices in Mt Kenya regions without consulting the party summit, a move he claimed will cause confusion and disorder.

Wanjigi who bankrolled Raila Odinga’s campaigns in 2017 wanted  to open an ODM officer  in Kenol town, Murang’a County but he was stopped by police who accused him of going against the laid down procedures.

“They had not notified us of their plan and when Wanjigi’s team came, we advised them to follow the process and that is where we left it,” Murang’a South Police Commander Alex Shikondi said.

The ODM chairman also accused the tycoon of trying to opening an ODM office in an area the party already has one, saying the was aimed at stirring controversies.

Mbadi compared Wanjigi’s move to that of Migori governor Okoth Obado whose attempts to open a party office in Migori led to bloody gun battles in 2017.

“Even Migori Governor Okoth Obado tried to open an ODM office in hi is county but the party denied him the permission so he doesn’t think he owns the party. There are people who masquerade as sponsors of ODM and this as has only given the party a bad name.” Mbadi said.

Wanjigi has, however, maintained that Raila and his Nasa allies should return the favour after he supported and financed them in 2017.

“I will put on an orange cap and battle it out with other candidates. I’m coming with a big force called Mt Kenya, they better give the ticket to me since they don’t have a formula. If they don’t, we shall leave them at a disadvantage. I sacrificed for them against my own community,” Wanjigi said.

The tycoon also cautioned ODM leaders who have dismissed his presidential bid saying he has been a kingmaker because he knows the winning formula.
