No Mr President, You’re Not Helpless

    By Nicholas Olambo
A frustrated President Uhuru Kenyatta lashed out at anti graft agencies at governance, anti-corruption and accountability summit held at state house, Tuesday 18th. He sought to defend himself saying that he has done everything within his powers to strengthen the fight against corruption, including increasing the budgetary allocations to relevant agencies like the ever toothless EACC (Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission) and firing ministers linked to corruption allegations.

The president claimed that his fight to end corruption has to some extent cost him politically, he also blamed the Auditor General of writing numerous reports about misuse of public funds without naming individuals who are solely responsible for the misappropriation.

The judiciary also got a good share of the blame for over six hundred pending cases of corruption which they turn to blame on the analogue system. The opposition too did not miss their share; they are blamed for using corruption to seek political mileage when it should be approached as a national disaster.

The string of blames signifies nothing but a lost war. Judiciary complains of receiving weak cases to jail any suspect when it’s already known that the thread of judicial philosophy of Kenya is pro rich. The rights of the accused work best with for the rich in this country. Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua, for instance, was accused of flaunting procurement laws but got a lifeline through another court to resist arrest.

Nairobi governor Dr Evans Kidero also got an injunction stopping investigators from snooping into his bank accounts when he was facing the shs 200 million bribe he allegedly paid Supreme Court judge, Phillip Tunoi. Judiciary is rotten, and heads will not roll when only ‘small people’ are charged within months and thrown behind bars and corruption chiefs walk free and run for political offices, gubernatorial and presidential.

The useless EACC sits only in Nairobi in a building with ownership problems. Corruption is now devolved and rampant in the counties where wheelbarrows are bought at over hundred thousand shillings, and a mere gate costs seven million shillings. Its distinguished list of shame did nothing to curb the vice; its 175 suspects are all free and seeking their ways to elective positions. No one has been found guilty and thrown in jail.

Now as the blame game continues, the reality of corruption rests with ordinary Kenyans starving, left with medical facilities without medicines, free education funds are looted and public schools are under staffed. This is because criminal minorities impoverish the majority of Kenyans and the response is to blame games and frustrations, a clear sign that the cartels are winning.

The buck must stop somewhere for the underperforming agencies, DPP’s who can’t prosecute even a fly, a judiciary that only receives weak cases of corruption and EACC that has turned out to be a cleaning house for the rich and powerful. The president has the power to change heads or fix these agencies through the parliament where he has the support of the majority wing.

  • Possible Implications On Burundi Pulling Out Of ICC And Lessons From Kenya

Possible Implications On Burundi Pulling Out Of ICC And Lessons From Kenya

    By Nicholas Olambo
The government of Burundi has said the country is pulling out of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and ‘they’ are ready to face the impacts of withdrawing. The cabinet announcement came six months after the court’s Chief Prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, indicated she would investigate the unending violence.

Political turmoil erupted in Burundi in April 2015 when President Pierre Nkurunzinza indicated his bid for a third term. The violence has seen hundreds killed with thousands fleeing to seek refuge in neighboring countries like Rwanda. President Paul Kagame (Rwanda) is on record requesting Pierre to stop producing more refugees.

The mantra that only Africa has the solution to its problems is a loose narrative that does not work for the civilians. The African Union whose body language supports the withdrawal of many African states from the Rome Statute has let Burundi down. AU chose to send peace delegation over peace troops to Burundi for mere threats from Pierre Nkurunzinza. How would his small force defeat over 50 nations?

AU, under its charter, has the power to intervene in a member state because of grave circumstances as war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity without that member’s consent. AU chose to sit back and watch the unrest tear the small country into pieces stalling the idea of African solutions to African problems.

AU failed miserably to assert itself and cut a clear difference from what is was before, the lethargic Organization of African Union. Sending troops to Burundi was the opportunity to do that, but it chose to row back. The choice favored Pierre who was against the deployment of peace troops.

It’s the fault of Africa and AU to produce many ‘materials’ for the court, Pierre’s greed to force himself for a third term after intimidating the judges of the constitutional court to rule in his favor resulted into what can only be tried at the ICC. Ordinary Burundians have suffered and still continue to suffer under the watch of AU, a replica of the same is taking root in Congo but does AU care?

It will watch in silence but put every pressure to support a withdrawal of member countries and suspects at the court. The court was under intense pressure from AU over cases against President Kenyatta and his deputy, William Ruto for their alleged in 2007/8 post poll chaos.

AU has shown and will still demonstrate that it stands for the ruling African elites only and has nothing in favor of the ordinary African. Hundreds of ordinary Burundians are suffering under its watch; the same is the case in Congo and the Oromos in Ethiopia.
Burundi’s withdrawal from ICC is not in the best interest of the country but one individual, Nkurunzina who knows that he will be declared a wanted man by The Hague-based court sooner or later to answer to charges of war crimes, genocide, forcible transfer of population and crimes against humanity. He has chosen to take a path already supported by AU to insulate himself.

African Union, War Mongers and Dictators Harbour

    By Nicholas Olambo
Article 4 of the AU Constitutive Act rejects and condemns impunity; on the contrary, that is what is visible. Many African governments thrive on dictatorship and brutality on their people. On Sunday a festival turned tragic following a confrontation between the Oromo ethnic people and the police. During the festival, the Oromos demanded equal rights as other ethnic groups in a country of over 90 million inhabitants displaying crossed wrists.

Police responded by firing rubber bullets, tear gas and live bullets creating a stampede that resulted in over 200 deaths and 300 seriously injured. The Oromos have been protesting since 2014 when the government had a plan to expand the capital, the move that was a threat to their farm lands was deferred, but they have never stopped protesting against marginalization.

Several people of the Oromo origin have been killed by government forces as AU watches in silence, the same organization that declared 2016 ‘African year of human rights’ and identifies justice as one its key shared values. The injustice against the Oromo people is unbecoming as they are being massacred by the government forces daily.

Au and global leaders have chosen to turn a blind eye on the Oromo’s bloodbath. The trend of silence is ‘normal’ anyway but worrying. Hundreds are being killed in Congo, Zimbabwe; there is the political impasse in Gabon and Burundi but the world leaders, and AU does what they do best, shut. War is a big business and an excellent opportunity for corrupt and dictatorial regimes to siphon from the public coffers and bank in offshore accounts.

African governments are cannibals, best at eating their own. Most nations in the continents heavily arm the police and other security forces to crush their people but engage in endless battles to neutralize external enemies like the small terror group, Al Shabaab that is a threat to the entire Horn of Africa governments.

What is being done on the Oromos amounts to crimes against humanity prosecutable at the International Criminal Court (ICC), but since AU got a silly defense of threatening to withdraw from the Rome statute whenever one of their own is wanted for questioning, crime is an order of the day. Dictators are chewing their subjects right before the eyes of AU that has its headquarters in Ethiopia.

Grounds Turning Hostile For Sycophantic Murkomen

    By Nicholas Olambo
Elgeyo Marakwet Senator stormed a meeting he did not organize in his country. The meeting was organized by the County Government of Governor Alex Toglos and the local churches. As is the ‘norm’ these days political rallies are organized as prayer meetings, one wonders when prayers or crusades became the business of politicians.
Murkomen stormed into one that he did not organize and received scathing attacks for his sycophantic politics at the cost of serving the locals. Accompanied by Mps William Kisang and Jackson Kiptanui, The Senator was received by speeches for from angry residents who accused him of not using his influential position in government to end insecurity in Kerio Valley.
Governor Alex Toglos and Former IG David Kimaiyo who is eyeing Murkomen’s seat had earlier led thousands of residents from all the four sub counties to protest against the runaway crime. The leaders and hundreds of the protesters later travelled in buses to the ‘prayer rally’.

Murkomen interrupted the meeting and tried to urge people to be a little patient as the Interior CS Joseph Nkaiserry and IG Joseph Boinet would visit the area on October 14th. No one had time to listen to a sycophant senator who was accused of ‘eating the meat’ and left his people to enjoy the scent. He was threatened that the area would rather support the opposition if the government doesn’t end the crimes swiftly.

‘We would rather suffer in the opposition other than in government’ said Endo MCA Kirop Festus. The county governor Alex Toglos appealed to CS Nkaiserry to resolve insecurity as expeditiously as he ordered him [governor] to record statement over Moi University VC appointment remarks. Toglos was part of the tribal cocoons that protested against the appointment of Prof Laban Ayiro as the acting VC of Moi University. They referred to the professor as an ‘outsider’ heading ‘their’ institution.

But who knew the mouth running Murkomen was this dwarf at home? Murkomen is a giant sycophant to the DP William Ruto who supports every non-sense to fill his stomach. Alongside his National Assembly counterpart, Aden Duale, Murkomen was accused of having benefited from the infamous shs 791 NYS scandal. The ‘Mr. Know it all’ senator is losing the ground to former IG David Kimaiyo and KI can authoritatively say that Murkomen is under siege.

Gubernatorial Race Continue To Attract Corruption Tainted Figures, Corrupt Thuita Mwangi Joins For The Laikipia Seat

    By Nicholas Olambo
The former PS of Foreigner Affairs ministry has announced his quest to contest the Laikipia gubernatorial seat in 2017. Mr. Thuita Mwangi was in the company of his aide, driver and a body gourd when he pulled the overdone PR stunt, entered a food kiosk near the county commissioner’s office for a cup of porridge and mingled with the small crowd.

Pirates spent their ransoms putting up hotels and businesses in Eastleigh, Nairobi, looters of the public funds finance their ways top elective leadership. Mwangi was in March this year acquitted of the Shs 1.6 billion corruption case that involved the procurement of the Tokyo Embassy during the Kibaki regime. Quite a number in the crowds raised an issue with others wanting to know how he is going to change the county.

Known for flouting procurement procedures, Mwangi claims he posses the much needed different style of managing the county and its resources. He is not the only one, other looters and corruption tainted leaders have announced their intentions to run for county top jobs. Ann Waiguru of the infamous shs 791 million, Charity Ngilu who was kicked out of Lands docket over corruption charges and Felix Koskei.

The sacked minister has declared he is in the race to unseat Governor Cleophas Langat of Nandi County in 2017 elections. Koskei illegally allocated sugar import permits and allowed illegal cultivation of 100acre government piece of land where he planted potatoes. He was supended in 2015 and subsequently kicked out by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

EACC, a clearing house for the ‘big fish’ as always found no sufficient evidence to back the claims and throw Koskei to jail. He is now funding his campaigns with corruptly earned money and proceeds of potato sales from the government land. He was fired alongside Davis Chirchir, Kazungu Kambi and Michael Kamau.

Opinion: Is Eugene Wamalwa Jubilee’s Best Bet For Nairobi

    By Nicholas Olambo
‘Wamalwa comes across as a sober leader of great character’ reads a section of an article by Chebweche Mabuto in standard newspaper. He/she goes ahead to purport that the CS did not contest the Saboti parliamentary seat in 2013 because he had his eyes on bigger things, he may gun for president one day and Nairobi’s top job sets a perfect stage for him’…… I don’t agree.
Wamalwa may have some big dreams but he lacks the needed courage and aggression to champion his own course. He chose not vie for the Saboti parliamentary seat because he had set his on the presidency when he knew it was not the ripe moment for him, brilliant politicians saw this and duped him into pre-poll pacts shelving his ‘presidential ambitions’ for a speaker job that never came to pass. Wamalwa was an Mp material in 2013, aspiring for presidency was a bite he could not and will not chew.

He may be sober, calm but he is not a go getter. He is an individual who sits back and waits for big wigs’ directive. He has no guts to gun for the Nairobi top job, he makes a good candidate to play a vote spoiler role to block the incumbent and an easy to manipulate governor by the executive. Thanks to the good Lord, he will not make it. You can’t become a Nairobi governor on borrowed ambitions, Wamalwa’s ambitions are not self driven presenting him as an individual who serve the interest of other quarters and not the interest of the great people of Nairobi.

Much as Nairobi top job sets a better stage for one to begin their journey to presidency Wamalwa ought to have started from somewhere, bottom, you can’t begin climbing the tree from the top. The individual pushing for his candidacy is plotting to have his tribe’s vote in 2022 should the current deal go sour. Luhya Nation is considerably large enough to craft another ‘tyranny of numbers’ hypothesis with the Rift.

Different places and situations must be faced with well calculated strategies that can handle them. Nairobi for instance is different from Trans Nzoia, Nairobi does not need a near violent type of leader but tough one who will not bend to the demands of the executive and city hall cartels. And whether you like it or not, you need deeper pockets to win this important seat that is a better stage to launch presidential ambitions. The financially limping water CS had to wait to be pushed and even after that pushing he still remains a weak candidate in fast shaping battle to unseat Dr. Evans Kidero from the lucrative seat.

Money Over Integrity and Reputation, NYS Grand Heist Deflated Mutahi Ngunyi

    By Nicholas Olambo
2016 has not been a good year for the arrogant and controversial political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi. Mutahi has been known for his rapper attitude and ‘dissing’ analyses on Cord leader Raila Odinga. He once described him as ‘a busy house girl’ in the grand coalition government. He was alleging that Mr. Odinga wanted to be seen doing everything including nothing. He always appeared to have a bone to pick with Rail. Ngunyi is the brain behind generation of ‘tyranny of numbers’ hypothesis.

His blunt utterances always caused uproar like suggesting that Raila should be jailed over Uganda sugar deal and calling Luo community poverty stricken. ‘Raila should be put on trial. The Judge: Poverty stricken Luos…. The Charge: selfishness. Selfishness, selfishness, selfishness…’ he wrote on a tweet. His political analysis career is ‘Raila based’ giving him all sorts demeaning descriptions like equating him to a slow punctured car. He is now cornered in the infamous NYS saga where shs 791 million was misappropriated. Ngunyi’s firm did business with NYS and was overpaid.

He is finding no defense in Raila, instead he claims he is shocked why he was overpaid shs 11.87 million. He told the National Assembly Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that he did not know how NYS Picked his firm to do it’s restructuring and if it was single sourced. Guilty Mutahi claims that he only learnt from the auditor general that he was overpaid in March 2015 but he assumed it was from a different client since he had been paid his dues prior to that.

He swore on his mom’s bible that he is clean. Is he clean? This is the same guy who authoritatively said in an interview with the Nairobian that he makes money in CCP (corruption, consultancy and politics).

The arrogant analyst claimed that The consultancy house (his firm) does a lot of work from bodies like governments and IGAD through referrals across 18 countries. Corruption is indeed his source of income and has finally ended his arrogance and career; no one listens to Ngunyi anymore.

Governor Mandago Shamelessly Bends Down To Low On Ethnicity Factor At Moi University

    By Nicholas Olambo
Politicians will always say that Eldoret is a cosmopolitan town to win your vote but the reality is way far from that. A keen observer can guess a possible scenario if an individual from a community outside North Rift vies for a top political post, the ‘madoa doa’ narrative will begin. Negative ethnicity is the order of the day in this part of the world where public institutions are now turned into ethnic joints.
It so sad that elected leaders from the region idle to an extent of hanging coats in their office then gather as tribal cocoons and unlawfully storm a public institution. What happened Tuesday was pathetic; a section of North Rift leaders stormed Moi University main campus in Kesses, Eldoret to protest against the appointment of Prof. Laban Ayiro as the acting vice chancellor of the institution for three months awaiting replacement of former VC Prof. Richard Mibey.

They are demanding for the appointment of a substantive VC based on merit, fronting for Prof. Isaac Kosgey whom they claim emerged top in the recruitment interviews and should be appointed on permanent basis.

As interviews ended, Judiciary Service Commission (JSC) retreats to consider who is best fit to be the next Chief Justice of the supreme court of Kenya. The seat that fell vacant Willy Mutunga retired in june attracted 14 applicants but only 6 were shortlisted. The interviews this time did not match up to those of 2011 that saw controversial Willy Mutunga appointed the first CJ under the new law. The just concluded interviews attracted ‘jokes’ that opted out of the race after being shortlisted.

The commission failed to sit one Thursday after an applicant who had been scheduled for interview bowed out, David Waihiga. He was the second to opt out after the law student cum carpenter Andrew Kongani who did not meet the 15 years’ minimum legal experience requirement. Waihaga however opted for the position of the Supreme Court judge. There were also gambles from some quarters that all those who applied should be interviewed for the interest of transparency.
The recruitment process also saw big names such US based Kenyan Law Professor Makau Mutua, Former anti-corruption czar Aaron Ringera and Supreme Court Judge Jackton Boma Ojwang’ locked out. The decision to drop Prof Makau Mutua and Jackton Ojwang’ sparked reactions with Law Society of Kenya (LSK) putting JSC to task to explain the criteria that was used that saw more than half of the applicants not shortlisted. JSC sighted unsuitability on grounds of leadership, integrity and ethics as some of the reasons.

JSC had to interview the other seven in advent of the court order. The process was not rigorous as it was in 2011; the two sitting Supreme Court judges, Smokin Wanjala and Jackton Ojwang’ were subjected to the same questions which was not fair. Bubble gum questions like whether an applicant is on social media or not did not draw suitability in terms of competence, integrity, leadership and ethics. Some candidates responded to questions like they reciting poem.

As the country awaits the big announcement from the JSC, the room for the public to guess is far wide with varying reasons. Considerations based on professional qualification, integrity, gender and ethnic distribution must produce the final cut. Candidates like Makau Mutua have shown that they are strong on principle, not afraid of the executive and can run the judiciary as an independent unit and are also pro reforms like the former CJ. Jackton Ojwang boasts of vast experience but he cannot keep his cool and respect for his juniors. He could also not explain the hefty legal award on Biwott case.

Jubilee party launch was also the event that saw the top cream in Kenya’s music take on stage to entertain the mammoth crowd and dignitaries. There was nothing different from that list and previous events, industry is run by cartels and their seasoned bootlickers could not miss out. It was the same script as it was during Jubilee coalition campaigns, President Uhuru’s inauguration and as it is on any public holiday.
Some have become in-house cats without respect nation values. I mean the overdone theatrics by one Kevin Bahati Kioko. How would he sit his small butts on the president’s chair? These chaps who quit school and get into the entertainment industry without proper mentorship are going overboard. We can’t afford to raise a generation that doesn’t respect national symbols like the president’s chair; I have never seen The First Lady sit on it but Bahati did, stretch his legs on the stool then went ahead did the same on the DP’s chair. Gosh!! The boy went overboard.

Politics aside, any event attended by the president should be treated as a national event. The characters lined to entertain or just address the crowd should inspire and harbor national values but what did I see, Rufftone and Ringtone! Corrupt and controversial in that order. Roy Smith Mwaita or Rufftone as he is popularly known was named in report by the county assembly of Vihiga on a Sh30 million subsidized fertilizer distribution.

Politics aside, any event attended by the president should be treated as a national event. Roy Smith Mwaita or Rufftone as he is popularly known was named in report by the county assembly of Vihiga on a Sh30 million subsidized fertilizer distribution.

The 19 paged report by the assembly revealed that the singer received shs 180,000 during the distribution which was between March 3rd and 7th 2015. The Mungu Baba hit maker was identified by his artistic name throughout the report raising more eyebrows on the procurement and distribution. Ruff was sourced to entertain buyers and signed the deal on foolscap for three different amounts with three different signatures.

Ringtone on the other hand has the biggest share of controversy more than any gospel artiste with Bahati and Willy Paul playing way below his league.

Just last month the gospel crooner was in court to withdraw a case against a contractor he had accused of stealing from his Karen home. Not just that, the self professed former street kid has endless controversies, from his questionable flashy lifestyle, beef with MCSK to a case where he allegedly got a girl pregnant and asked her to abort. One fails to understand why hypocritical gospel artistes are always favoured, who does Ringtone inspire or what positive thing does he represent?

There so many mannered and humble gospel and secular artistes out there, who can step on national stage, entertain, educate and inspire the crowds. Eric Wainaina, Suzanna Owiyo, Juacali, Gloria Muliro just to name a few. These are individuals who crafted their art from scratch and mastered it professionally, Suzanna has been on international stage performing before the late Nelson Mandela, Wainaina has been performed in Fifa World cup opening ceremony.

This country has more to offer but event organizers have chosen to stick on the same script of whack drop outs with beg for mercy stories who can rhyme at end of every sentence, put a beat on it and then lick their boots. Artistes need to at least learn how to approach different crowds, events and know how far they can go. Bahati went too far but it’s that sad the chap does not know how far is too far. May be he can be accused based on ignorance.

With the new constitution came the devolution that created the governor position to head counties. Each governor appoints his deputy before presenting their documents to IEBC, the duo are then elected as a team to lead the county governments. The journey was all rosy till elections but immediately they got into office the ugly head of dirty politics came out. Somewhere along the way as senators began lining up to challenge their respective governors in the coming polls, deputy governors are also proving potential threats to the governors’ crowns.

The working relationship in a number of counties has been severely strained. Machakos governor Dr Alfred Mutua and his deputy Bernard Kyala are friends turned foes. Mutua has accused his deputy of working closely with his enemies, Senator Johnson Muthama and other Mps from the region. ‘My deputy is a traitor who is working with my enemies to plot my impeachment so that he can complete the remainder of my term’ Mutua said. The inverse is the case though; Governor Mutua has been accused of frustrating and ‘impeaching’ his deputy, locking his office, denying him his official car and having him not covered under the medical insurance package.

Kyala has since declared running against Mutua in the 2017 elections straining their relationship further. Mutual, a PR and communications expert on the other hand claims that Mr. Kyala is just a lazy individual who cannot keep up to his stamina. He brags of single handedly improving the state of roads and sinking more boreholes than any other Kamba leader since time immemorial and through his Maendeleo Chap Chap Movement he is destined to do more. Mutua ignores the ailing health sector in Machakos as a normal problem experienced in many counties across the country.

Mutua ignores the ailing health sector in Machakos as a normal problem experienced in many counties across the country.

When its all clear that governors are selfish and their deputies are greedy, Mutua says he just did not have enough time to choose a good deputy before elections and instead blames his woes on the leadership of Wiper Party. He says the Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka is jelous of ‘positive attention’ he is getting through his development projects because he led the community for three decades and did nothing. He further denies allegations that he has quit wiper party saying he is a card holding member.

His comments on Kalonzo can be ignored; The PR governor has history of belittling people including respectable global leaders. When he was the government spokesman in the Kibaki administration, Mutua referred to President Barrack Obama the then senator of Illinois as a small guy who was coming to traverse our beautiful country polluting the air. Obama then rose to be the president of the most powerful country on earth, United States of America when Mutua is still a governor who can’t even lead his deputy. Can he lead the people? Leadership is a team work; Mutua is not getting along with his deputy, Senator and the Women rep.

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and His Deputy Jonathan Mueke
Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and His Deputy Jonathan Mueke

If he seriously means the kind of development he is bragging of, why should he stay in a party whose leadership has been his obstruction to proper development? He denies allegations that Maendeleo Chap Chap is a party but a movement that is open anyone who shares in his development ideology to join for the good of the people. The truth is Maendeleo Chapa Chap is party whose launch at the Bomas was poorly attended making it difficult for the poor governor to use as his re-election vehicle.

In Kisumu the situation is not any different. The governor and the deputy don’t see eye to eye. This is what you get when you force two strange fellows to bed; the governor and his deputy are odd couples who were brought together to avoid party friction towards the 2013 polls. Both were eyeing the gubernatorial post through the same party, ODM, but the deputy was asked by the party chiefs to shelve her ambitions and deputize Hon. Jack Ranguma. The case of occupants of both offices not relating well has also been witnessed in Kwale, Bungoma and somehow in Nairobi.

At some point there were whispers that the relationship between Nairobi governor and his deputy Jonathan Mueke was weakening. Mueke denied the allegations even as Machakos governor said on a national television that the case in Machakos is the same in Nairobi. He also added that Mueke had considered running against Kidero at some point but he was smart. He realized that Kidero is too strong to beat and with deep pockets. His candidature against Kidero is not viable; he has no choice but to deputize him.

With the poor rapport many Kenyans can be of the option that the deputy position be abolished but I think it’s the selection criteria that should be opened for debate. When Mutua says that the governor does 98% of the work and the governor should fire and hire their deputies, I think the roles of the deputy should be entrenched in the law so that individuals cannot lock a public office and stop an elected leader from carrying out his duties.

The race to clinch the 2017 presidential seat began soon after the Supreme Court dismissed CORD’s petition case that was challenging President Kenyatta’s election. Hon. Raila Odinga respected the court’s verdict, moved on but swore to fight another day, 2017. Kenya has never ceased to be in a campaign mood from 1992, the situation has been intense from 2013 to date; from Okoa Kenya campaign, Eurobond saga, President Kenyatta’s appointments of opposition law makers to cabinet positions which always resulted into by-elections, recent calls and street protests to disband IEBC and regular tours to either woo certain regions or handle party rebellion.

Cord leader is camping in western on a five day tour, a move that is more of an offensive charm of the region to tame rebellion and keep the bloc. When Raila is busy on a campaign trail, the ruling coalition is holding a three day mega launch of their new party, Jubilee Party. The launch is all hyped up, flashy and the talk of town presented as the place to be. Five Cord governors are expected to attend alongside many members of parliament. That is clear defection right there.

    img_20160904_215932
Jubilee’s Party Freshly unveiled building in Pangani off Thika Road

Though one political analyst once described Raila as a politician who is not short of surprises, he has nothing left. Jubilee has exhausted any possible strategy to render Mr Odinga ‘an ordained’ opposition leader. He has never received a single vital defector from jubilee since 2013 while his foot soldiers are ‘bought’ on a daily basis, slowly creating impression in the minds of Kenyans that cord will be beaten before sunrise in the 2017 elections.
2017 is a two horse race; the moneyed jubilee is putting up a flashy battle hyped with television ads, goodies for opposition strong holds and reception of cord defectors. Odinga on the other hand is kept in his strong hold putting off rebellion fires.

The debate on cord flag bearer is also getting hotter by the day and almost tearing the coalition a part due to pressure from outside. Raila may not be the ordained flag bearer but it’s visible even for the blind to see; only Raila Odinga is strong enough to take on President Kenyatta.

His lazy co-principals are doing nothing but sitting back waiting to be endorsed by him or ‘bought’ by jubilee. Raila’s tour of western to tame rebillion should be approached as a coalition affair not an ODM affair, I mean is about time to put the Cord house in order. Kalonzo who should be Raila’s number two is doing nothing. Jubilee is not operating in that shoddy style, DP William Ruto has always put up strong fight for him and the president.

The three Cord principals appear greedy and not like minded; they claim to be equal partners when Kalonzo and Wetang’ula have not branded and marketed themselves like Raila has. Their struggles to play in top political league are completely different, Raila is known for his strong struggle for democracy and being pro reforms, Kalonzo is not. In fact Hon Charity with all her respect for Raila is not in Cord because Raila made a desperate move to make a political pact with Kalonzo whom she said is not a reformist.

CORD's Principals Kalonzo Musyoka and Raila Odinga at the ODM's 10years Anniversary Dinner.
CORD’s Principals Kalonzo Musyoka and Raila Odinga at the ODM’s 10years Anniversary Dinner.

Wetang’ula has no history of political struggle; he’s just a brilliant lawyer who came to the public light through Goldenberg case where he represented businessman Kamlesh Patni and later became a sycophant of the Kibaki regime which later kicked him out to seek refuge in the shades of Raila. During the Serena talks after 2007 disputed polls, Weta was a key hardliner and stubborn PNU die hard who referred to Raila’s side as losers who were to join an already functioning government of Kibaki.

Kalonzo through Daniel Manzo had earlier taken off with ODM-Kenya party for fear of nomination leaving Raila party less. He became number three in the disputed polls but joined PNU side and became Kibaki’s vice when Kenya was burning. These guys have no history of working together. Uhuru and Ruto have their pasts deeply rooted in KANU, they are Moi’s ‘political sons’; they even had a short time in ODM together during the 2005 referendum and later parted ways towards 2007 elections but got back together through ICC cases.

The ‘Enigma of Kenyan Politics’ is not so good at keeping his house together; he has been accused of sitting on the wallet and being stingy. He’s opponents are doing everything money can do to remain favourites in the coming polls. The mega jubilee launch is already flashy even before the material day, it will be sad if ODM puts a cold 10th anniversary party in Mombasa with the reports that the party leader will hosted for lunch by the county government of Mombasa. The party leader should give his delegates a lunch treatment.

Jubilee is out with branded cars, t-shirts, fliers, television and radio ads, Tuko Pamoja Towers in Pangani, that’s the direction majority of money hungry Kenyans are looking at. A sad fact, even the mainstream media is giving jubilee more airtime than cord. Kenya is a capitalist country, and that’s what cord seems not to be taking seriously.

Political fever pitch is rising by the day. Candidates with bigger visions beyond 2017 are looking at Nairobi gubernatorial seat to launch their bids or push individuals loyal to them to go for the Nairobi seat. But where does this leave the electorate of Nairobi County? The precious document that saw the birth of this great County had many provisions among them the freedom for people to choose who they best feel can lead them. That freedom is being infringed and is under serious threat of remaining nothing but just writing in the constitution.

Nairobi is a County of significant importance to the entire nation and East and Central African region as a whole. This is the business capital. When that can be noted and not allowed to sink deep into the minds due to political greed, then there is no hope for the future. Nairobi city has suffered in the hands of cartels for way too long, under the old rule and today under the new rule. This County is thirsty for real change. Systems that destroy impoverish and not build our people have no place anymore.
Land grabbing is still a big issue in Nairobi. It’s belittling to notice that individuals known for the vice are imposing candidates on Nairobians. I believe this county has qualified ladies and gentlemen, with a good education, deeply planted roots on democracy, integrity and leadership skills who can take it to greater heights. This is not the place for individuals who have been more to the toilets than school to chest thump political ambitions without policies neither is it a place for candidates to run on borrowed ambitions.

The regime of the day led by Dr Evans Kidero has done nothing to write home about. Instead of doing a real job of great service to the people, the current government is only designing projects as a scheme to win the next elections. The same is the case with the senator and the women rep, endless theatrics and public altercations. In fact Nairobi despite being the capital and the County that every other County is looking up to, it has had its entire top leadership fight like kindergarten kids in the full glare of the cameras.

Whatever has been witnessed from 2013 till now is a clear indication that we need a serious change. That said does not mean that candidates can be imposed to serve the political interest of other individuals. I have no personal vendetta against Eugene Wamalwa. He is a brilliant lawyer, he looks calm, speaks the queen’s language in mid-Atlantic accent. He’s almost remarkable but must it take him external forces to realise that he is interested in Nairobi’s top job? That shows he is not ‘man enough’.

The force behind him is the interest he will serve; greedy politicians who are scheming to win his tribe’s votes in the coming polls, 2017 and 2022.
Wamalwa was duped to drop his presidential ambitions in 2013 thinking he would be given the national speaker job by the current regime. He was short changed, and the job was given to TNA man, Justin Muturi. He remained in the cold till 2015 when he was appointed CS in the water docket. His swearing in had to wait due to political wrangles and alignments backstage.

Reliable sources close to KI revealed that top leadership of the current is pushing for his candidature. The DP William Ruto is on record saying that Jubilee must win Nairobi top seat by hook or crook, could this be one of those ways. Nairobi cannot be tricked like people got tricked in London to vote Brexit. What does Eugene stand for? His visions for Nairobi is what will exonerate him. He’s favourited by the JP to be their flag bearer.

We also have boneless candidates like Dennis Waweru who have no extraordinary visions neither set policies but just floating around hanging on the lethal tribe string. Nairobi needs someone who can offer solutions to the glaring problems and not just same old tribal politics.

Esther Passaris, the vocal social entrepreneur, is the latest candidate to thrown in her bid for the County’s top seat, being the only woman who has publicly declared her interest. She needs to cut herself above the men to remain outstanding. She gained considerably high votes in the last elections losing the Woman Rep position to Rachael Shebesh in a whisker. Is this her chance? What can she do differently?

Miguna Miguna is again one of the most vicious candidates who’ve hit the road for the seat early and making serious strides with a borrowed script from Donald Trump’s US campaigns. He’s coming out as a no-nonsense, controversial candidate with the core value of fighting the cartel. He’s an interesting candidate to watch.

While they say politics is a dirty game, and the youths are the leaders of future, Kenya is now witnessing more and more young politicians stepping into the arena to clean the dirt in the game. Many have come and gone, and others made it others did not, a real leader is one who champions his policies and agreeing not to keep rehashing mistakes of the past and instead focus on the future without bootlicking the moneyed party chiefs.

Change won’t come from the top, and change will come from the mobilised grassroots, Obama said while launching his presidential ambitions. Obama who first attracted global attention in 2004 at the DNC in Philadelphia and rose to win the American presidency in 2008 with his ‘Yes we can’ slogan is inspiration enough to up and coming young politicians from humble backgrounds.

The election of President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2013 must have acted as the biggest push in a generational shift. I am seeing a crop of dedicated young men keeping on their track, rising and getting better with time. Mombasa is the den of many, Moses Aran who is the current Chairman of ODM Youth, and Mombasa County has steadily risen to his position after many years of community work and youth mobilisation. He is now sharing the same platform with the big men in political spheres, Cord leader Raila Odinga, Mombasa Governor Ali Joho and area Mp, Abdulswamad Nasir just to mention a few.

Moses Aran, Mombasa Youth Leader addressing a crowd
Moses Aran, Mombasa Youth Leader addressing a crowd

With a track record that speaks volumes, he cannot be belittled as a small time leader. Moses has headed projects that saw the shaping of musical talents of juveniles from Boarstal Academy, Shimo la Tewa Prisons, leading Tudor soccer team to represent the country in beach soccer tournament in Tanzania in 2014 and organising community clean-ups. Commonly known as Cvilizer Youth Commander 001, Moses has been the loudest voice of reason among the youth of Mombasa. Through Samba Foundation where he is the project director, his efforts have seen the implementation of projects that change and sustain lives of women and the youth. Recent polls ranked him the most influential young people in the county.

The trend is not in Mombasa alone; Nairobi too is seeing the same. Young people are gearing to be elected in top political positions in 2017 polls. TNA Chairman, Johnson Arthur Sakaja is a young man who burst into the national limelight with a powerful speech during the launch of The National Alliance (TNA) party in 2012. He began his foray into national politics while studying at the University of Nairobi in 2005 and later played a key role in the re-election of the retired president Mwai Kibaki. Now a household name, the nominated lawmaker has declared his interest in the Nairobi gubernatorial race.

Paul Owino Ongili, better by his moniker ‘Babu Owino’ than his real names is the young man in his late 20s with a whiff of scandals about him. Babu who is the current chairman of SONU is always in the news for one reason or the other, from controversial re- election, flashy lifestyle and to constant dates with the courts has said he is in the race for Embakasi East parliamentary seat. His political future seems bright with the kind of authority he commands among university students or comrades as he refers to them; he is in a place where many have successfully launched their political careers.

Steve Mbogo is another one, flashy and controversial with many questioning his wealth and education. In an article, a Daily Nation writer described him as nothing more than a crossbreed of a fake wannabe with a rudimentary grasp of English. The leader of Party of National Alliance (PONA) Party is aspiring to unseat President Uhuru Kenyatta just like Mohamed Abduba Dida.

OLAMBO: The gods Have Conspired Against EACC Chairman Kinisu, But He Has an Option

    EACC Chair Philip Kinisu

    By Nicholas Olambo

The EACC (Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission) chairman, Philip Kinisu has come out strongly to defy calls for resignation after a company he owns, Esaki Communications Ltd, was found to have conducted business with the troubled NYS where Kshs.791 million was lost. His company received over 35 million shillings to supply NYS with borehole materials.

Kinisu, who is the ‘former’ director of Esaki Limited, a company associated with his wife and daughter, claims the tender awarded to the firm was won before NYS woes. He chairs the EACC, which hurriedly cleared the former Devolution CS Ann Waiguru from NYS scandals only to repeat their shoddy job after Kabura affidavit.

The structures in this country are too eroded to fight corruption, how was a controversial figure like Kinisu appointed to head EACC. Other than corruption watchdog, he also chairs ‘a nonprofit’ organisation, Africa Population and Health whose operations are being questioned by NGOs Coordination Board (NCB)

Sources close to KI revealed that NCB Executive Director Fazul Mohamed wrote to the spy chief Philip Kameru asking him to investigate the organisation for diversion of donor aid, money laundering and regulatory misconduct. The NGO received over five million shillings in the past three years.

“The allegations against the company and me are unsubstantiated. We have been tried and convicted in the court of public opinion by the deliberate manner in which these matters have been framed and orchestrated. Corruption is sophisticated and compelling. My experience through these events has shown that even those who should be on the right side are easily swayed to become angels of the devil”, Mr Kinisu said. He also added that resigning would set a wrong precedent, a classic response of ‘corrupt’ Kenyans.

There are many qualified Kenyans without ‘integrity issues’ who can serve in the capacity he is serving even better. Opportunity to serve Kenyans is a privilege and the moment one becomes a questionable character like him, the honourable thing to do is to resign. It’s insane to put the nation through a series of lame dramas quoting irrelevant sections of the law just to buy time and prevent thorough investigations.

Even if the company was not adversely mentioned in the alleged scandal that saw NYS lose 792 million, the fact it is owned by the EACC boss raises many questions about the possibility of conflict in interest. Surprisingly, companies associated with Kinisu are under investigations by the DCI, Assets Recovery Agency and the Kenya Revenue Authority over their dealings with the troubled NYS. Kinisu is not ethically fit to stay in office. Kenya is sick of individuals like him leading from behind.

  • Opinion: The Gender Balance Debate Let Nature Take Course

Opinion: The Gender Balance Debate Let Nature Take Course

Women can be as determined and ambitious and career driven as their male counterparts, but it is their different perspective on life that’s been the detriment to their success.

“I am a woman, a mother, and a wife.” Women will-will blubber in almost all conversations revolving around the debate for equality and gender balance.

This morning, compelled by the raging debate in parts of social media and our very own National Parliament, I “googled” what Gender Equality means:

“Gender equality, also known as sex equality, gender egalitarianism, sexual equality or equality of the sexes, is the view that both men and women should receive equal treatment and not be discriminated against based on their gender.”

I again inferred from my good friends, GOOGLE, what they would mean by “equal”:

<- >Being the same in quantity, size, degree, or value.
<- >(Of people) having the same status, rights, or opportunities.
<- >Uniform in application or effect; without discrimination on any grounds.
      <- >Evenly or relatively balanced.

Whether the 2/3 gender rule is legally binding for us as a people and a country whose Constitution in Article 27 (3) states that women and men have the right to equal treatment, including the right to equal opportunities in political, economic, cultural and social spheres I cannot tell.

Of course, the society we live in hasn’t demonstrated this.

Take for instance a case of a seven-year-old boy falling and he’s reprimanded not to shed a tear. Why? Because he’s male. That man is not supposed to cry! And they grow up believing so. A child (male) brought up with such a notion till adulthood will walk away from a marriage that makes him cry like he’s got onion on his face.

    gender
Such a child will cringe at the idea of sharing his pains with anyone, especially female, and would rather resort to drinking his ass off in a bar than entertain the notion of talking it out!

If only the society will change the very fabric it has used overtime to nurture the boy child, and create the same atmosphere as early as possible, we can dream of achieving this elusive gender balance.

Having the ability or resources to meet (a challenge).
It has gone without question that what a man can do a woman can do even better. Still University Placement for our women folk, here in Kenya and all over Africa, is pegged lower compared to the male fork. This happens with a backdrop of similar curricula, like teachers and similar examinations.

Our women must, then wake up and challenge this act of mistreatment against them since it authoritatively implies their weak gender. As Plato said, “If women are expected to do the same work as men, we must teach them the same things.”

The “ladies first” fuss, as people get into queues is another balderdash that our women must first fight off. Let us be candid and openly compete; it is the only way! And women are better placed to deal with it.

The tag, in its entirety, clearly outlines woman’s inability to compete favourably in a competitive environment and if not checked would delineate them from whatever it is the rest of humanity is scavenging for.

Of a person or thing considered being the same as another in status or quality.
We got to treat each other as equals. If it comes to rent and family issues, we are to pretend that men are to be breadwinners? Seriously?

I was hoping that our women folk would demand as well to contribute equally to rent and everything else that appertains to bringing up a family.

I was praying that our mothers would break the ceilings and go into jobs traditionally left for the male folk.

I was hoping, beyond hope, that women would as well offer to pay the dowry for this gender balance issue.
    Why?

Because humanity is carved the same way and men and women, have to balance.

I’ll be very honest with you: the cultural transformation that we are wading into is not easy. If it must be a success, it will require rigour and determination from both governments and those traditional barazas you ignore in the village.
To the proponents of gender balance, there are underlying issues that need to be addressed before this becomes a national debate.

We must go back to the very smallest unit of our lives, family, and have a very honest discussion about balancing the gender sheet off.

Myths such as boys are preferred to girls as families talk about children liking must be done away with. (Some my girlfriends prefer to give birth to males)

Mary Wollstonecraft said, “I do not wish them [women] to have power over men; but over themselves.” It is in so doing that they will compete astutely for the scarce resources that the men hold dear, and we men will support them.

After meeting with Sheryl Sandberg (current Facebook COO), Cisco’s John Chambers admitted that he hadn’t quite “gotten it,” and communicated this admission widely to his employees. He said, “While I have always considered myself sensitive to and effective on gender issues in the workplace, my eyes were opened in new ways and I feel a renewed sense of urgency to make the progress we haven’t made in the last decade… while I believe I am relatively enlightened, I have not consistently walked the talk … What we have been doing hasn’t worked, and it is time to adjust.

“To call the woman the weaker sex is a libel; it is man’s injustice to woman. If by strength is meant brute strength, then, indeed, is woman less brute than man. If by strength is meant moral power, then a woman is immeasurably man’s superior. Has she not greater intuition, is she not more self-sacrificing, has she not greater powers of endurance, has she, not greater courage? Without her, the man could not be. If nonviolence is the law of our being, the future is with a woman. Who can make a more effective appeal to the heart than woman?” Mahatma Gandhi

In a nutshell, to achieve the balance, we ought to dedicate more time to understanding our cultural, social and right now technological challenges than just writing pieces of legislation. We must rethink, as remotely as possible why God intended man to dominate woman!
