Tob Cohen Death; Sarah Wairimu Charged With Murder

Businesswoman Sarah Wairimu was today charged in connection with the murder of Dutch businessman Tob Cohen in 2019. Wairimu appeared before Kibera High Court Judge Diana Mochache Kadveza, where she denied the charges.

The court heard that Wairimu allegedly committed the offense on the night of July 21-22, 2019, in the Lower Kabete area. She pleaded not guilty, and her lawyers urged the court to grant her lenient bond terms.

Earlier, before her plea, the court dismissed an application by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to detain her further pending additional medical examinations. The court also closed the previously filed case, paving the way for her to take a plea.

    **Court’s Ruling on Mental Assessment**

Justice Kadveza addressed the DPP’s application regarding a mental assessment for Wairimu, stating, “I have considered the application by the DPP on whether the accused person can be subjected to a mental assessment. The practice of subjecting suspects to mental tests is guided by the law. Based on previous medical examinations that found the accused person fit to stand trial, I find that there are no compelling reasons to subject her to another mental test. However, this decision may change with circumstances.”

She added, “I have not been persuaded that there is strong evidence to reopen the case, and the application to reopen the case is therefore dismissed. It is noted that at the time the offense was committed in 2019, the Kibera High Court was not in operation. If any plea is to be taken, the Kibera Court is the best place to hear the matter, as the offense was committed in Kabete, which falls within the jurisdiction of this court.”

    **Bail Hearing Scheduled**

The prosecution opposed Wairimu’s release on bond, contrary to the defense’s plea. Justice Kadveza directed that the bail hearing proceed on February 3, after all parties file their responses in the matter.

Sarah Cohen Remanded In Lang’ata Prison Pending Ruling On Mental Assessment

Sarah Wairimu Cohen who was arrested yesterday for the murder of her husband Tob Cohen after the DPP ordered for her arrest will remain in custody until Wed next week when the court will rule on whether she will be taken for mental assessment.

Wairimu was arrested on Thursday after the DPP DPP Renson Igonga said they have overwhelming evidence showing that Wairimu murdered Cohen on the night of July 19 and 20, 2019, at Lower Kabete Area, within Nairobi County.

She had been acquitted by court after the former DPP dropped the charges but Ingonga has reopened the case and ordered for her prosecution for the murder of her husband.

Wairimu through her lawyers has opposed a second mental assessment being done on her before taking plea saying the one she took in 2019 will suffice.

The lawyers also questioned Whether prosecution can bring fresh information after a nolle prosecu has been entered .

However, the DPP through state counsel Vincent Monda said she must take the mental assessment before she takes fresh plea.

“There’s no need of subjecting her to another mental assessment,” he argued.

Kibera High court judge Diana Kavenza said that the parties have submitted extensively and she needs time to address all the issues in a detailed ruling.

  • ‪Sarah Wairimu Arrested Again To Fave Fresh Charges Over The Murder Of Tob Cohen In 2019‬

‪Sarah Wairimu Arrested Again To Fave Fresh Charges Over The Murder Of Tob Cohen In 2019‬

Homicide detectives have arrested Sarah Wairimu again for links to the shocking murder of her husband, Tob Cohen, six years ago.

Reports indicate that the Director of Public Prosecutions reviewed the much-publicized case and found new evidence sufficient to charge her.

Wairimu, who was picked up from her home, is currently being held at Kilimani Police Station and is expected to be arraigned in Kibera Law Courts on Friday to face fresh murder charges.

The charges come after a protracted legal battle, culminating in a public inquest filed by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) at the Milimani Law Courts in April 2024.

Wairimu is accused of orchestrating the brutal murder of her husband, Cohen, who went missing in July 2019.

His decomposed body was discovered weeks later in a septic tank at their home.

The disappearance sent shockwaves through the nation, sparking widespread media attention and intense public speculation about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Following the discovery of Cohen’s body, a massive search operation was launched, leading to Wairimu’s arrest along with businessman Peter Karanja.

However, in December 2022, the initial murder charges against Wairimu filed at Milimani High Court were withdrawn due to a lack of sufficient evidence.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) faced criticism for failing to provide crucial evidence such as cell phone data and witness statements, which led to the delay in the case’s progression.

Sarah Wairimu saying a prayer at late husband’s grave in the past.

Despite the setback, fresh findings from the inquiry have renewed hopes for justice, prompting the DPP to move forward with new charges against Cohen’s widow.

The case has been clouded by controversy from the start. Wairimu, who has consistently maintained her innocence, has also made explosive claims.

She has accused powerful unnamed politicians, allegedly tied to the former government, of being involved in Cohen’s death, suggesting that they were behind a plot to seize her husband’s estate and disinherit her.

She has also alleged that the police were complicit in covering up the true nature of the crime.

Further complicating matters, Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police, John Gachomo, who was part of the DCI at the time, filed an affidavit in the High Court in which he claimed to have been misled into implicating a Court of Appeal Judge in the murder.

Gachomo later disavowed the contents of the affidavit, alleging that he had been manipulated by former DCI boss George Kinoti. This new revelation introduced additional contradictions into the case, prompting the DPP to seek more time to investigate these claims and reassess the charges.

Mutilated Body Of Lydia Tokesi Who Took Loan To Buy Boyfriend A Car Found Murdered in Gataka Forest

Nairobi, Kenya – In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the body of 29-year-old Lydia Tokesi was discovered in Gataka Forest, Kajiado County, on Sunday, January 12, 2025, after she had been reported missing for over a week. Tokesi, a former student at Moi University, had last been seen alive on January 4, 2025.

According to reports from local news sources, Tokesi’s body was found in a deplorable state, with some parts missing, suggesting a brutal murder. The discovery has sent shockwaves through the community and her family, who had been anxiously awaiting news of her whereabouts.

Lydia Tokesi had recently taken a bank loan to purchase a motor vehicle for her boyfriend, Joseph Orwa, who is now the prime suspect in her murder. Orwa, who operated the car as a taxi in Nairobi, has also gone missing, adding layers of complexity to the investigation. The vehicle was found in Rongai, with all of Tokesi’s belongings, including her laptop, intact, indicating that the motive might not have been robbery.

Her brother, Daniel Shikoli, spoke to the press, detailing the gruesome discovery, “The state of the body was so bad. You couldn’t really identify it. It was missing some parts. It was found in a thicket. We’re waiting for the DNA tests to know if that body is Lydia’s.”

The police have launched a full-scale investigation into her death, with a particular focus on her relationship with Orwa.

Tokesi was employed as a customer service experience officer at Kasha Technologies.

As the investigation continues, authorities are appealing for any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect. The community has rallied, sharing memories of Tokesi and calling for swift justice in what appears to be a case of betrayal and violence.

  • Luigi Mangione, Suspect In Killing Of UnitedHealth Executive Brian Thompson Charged With Murder

Luigi Mangione, Suspect In Killing Of UnitedHealth Executive Brian Thompson Charged With Murder

(Reuters) – New York prosecutors filed a murder charge against the suspect in the killing of a UnitedHealth executive, a brazen shooting that set off a manhunt that culminated in his capture in Pennsylvania earlier on Monday.

The action brought an end to a tense five-day manhunt for the suspected killer.

The suspect, identified as Luigi Mangione, 26, was captured in Altoona, Pennsylvania, after he was spotted eating at a McDonald’s by a customer and an employee who believed he resembled the gunman, officials said at a news conference.

When approached by two police officers inside the McDonald’s and asked if he had recently been in New York, Mangione began to shake and went quiet, one of the responding officers said at a press conference. He had been wearing a mask and sitting alone with a laptop and backpack.

A search of the backpack at the police station turned up a black “ghost gun” – a firearm assembled from parts, making it untraceable – loaded with a magazine and a silencer. Pennsylvania authorities said the weapon, as well as clothing and a mask, were similar to those used by the killer.

Mangione was led into the Blair County courthouse in Altoona for his arraignment on Monday night, where gun and forgery charges were read against him. The judge asked Mangione if he understood the charges against him, and he said he did. No plea was entered.

Prosecutors in New York brought a murder charge, along with four related gun charges, against Mangione, according to court records.

Pennsylvania prosecutors, citing false IDs and a large sum of cash that were found on Mangione, argued he was a flight risk and asked that bail be denied, which it was. Several electronic devices were also found with the suspect, and they were being examined by police.

Officers in Pennsylvania said at a press conference that they were working to determine if Mangione had any accomplices and if he intended to kill anyone else. They said he had been in Pennsylvania for several days and were investigating exactly where he was and what he did in the state.

Mangione, a Maryland native, had multiple fraudulent identifications, including a fake New Jersey ID that matched the one used by the gunman to check into a Manhattan hostel days before the shooting, officials said.

Police also found a handwritten document that speaks to “both his motivation and his mindset,” New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said earlier on Monday.

While the document did not mention specific targets, Mangione harbored “ill will toward corporate America,” said Joseph Kenny, the NYPD’s chief of detectives.

Mangione graduated from a private all-boys school in Baltimore as valedictorian in 2016 before earning dual engineering degrees in 2020 at the University of Pennsylvania, a prestigious Ivy League university, according to school records. His last known address was in Honolulu, officials said.

Thompson, 50, was gunned down outside a Manhattan hotel early on Wednesday morning by a masked man who appeared to wait for his arrival before shooting the executive from behind.
The suspect ran from the scene and then rode a bike into Central Park. Surveillance video captured him exiting the park and taking a taxi to a bus station in northern Manhattan, where police believe he used a bus to flee the city.

    DENY DEFEND DEPOSE

Police said Thompson appeared to be deliberately targeted and were investigating whether others also may have been at risk.

The words “deny,” “defend” and “depose” were carved into shell casings found at the scene, several news outlets have reported. The words evoke the title of a book critical of the insurance industry published in 2010 titled “Delay, Deny, Defend: Why Insurance Companies Don’t Pay Claims and What You Can Do About It.”

A Facebook profile that appears to belong to Mangione identified him as a native of Towson, Maryland, and a former student at the University of Pennsylvania. Photos appear to show Mangione at Stanford University wearing Stanford-branded clothing.

An X account that appears owned by Mangione says he lives in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Thompson’s murder unleashed a wave of frustration from Americans who have seen their health insurance claims or care denied, faced unexpected costs or paid more for premiums and medical care – all trends that are rising, according to recent data.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, speaking at a press conference with prosecutors and police in Altoona, said he understood the frustrations that some Americans, angered by health insurance companies and their refusal to pay for some treatments, had expressed online since Thompson’s killing. But he rejected the glorification of the suspect in some circles online.

“In America we do not kill people in cold blood to resolve policy differences or express a viewpoint,” Shapiro said.

Thompson, a father of two, had been CEO of UnitedHealth Group’s insurance unit since April 2021, part of a 20-year career with the company. He had been in New York to attend the company’s annual investor conference.

“Our hope is that today’s apprehension brings some relief to Brian’s family, friends, colleagues and the many others affected by this unspeakable tragedy,” a spokesperson for UnitedHealth said.

  • Derek Chauvin Sentenced To 22.5 Years In Prison For Floyd Murder

Derek Chauvin Sentenced To 22.5 Years In Prison For Floyd Murder

    MINNESOTA, US

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced on Friday to 22.5 years for the murder of George Floyd, a death that touched off international outrage.

Chauvin showed no reaction as the verdict was announced by Judge Peter Cahill.

Reaction outside the courthouse, where about a hundred people gathered was muted at first, then turned a little more hostile. Chauvin could have been sentenced to as many as 40 years in prison and the prosecution had requested 30 years.

“I thought it was going to be 40,” said Ashley Dorelus between sobs. “I thought they were going to give us a little bit of hope.” Dorelus said she flew from her home in California for a month to watch the trial, even though no spectators were allowed.

The sentencing was, she said, “white privilege at its finest.”

Floyd family attorney Benjamin Crump said the sentence was “historic”, the longest prison sentence ever for a Minnesota police officer, and that it would bring the nation “one step closer to healing by delivering closure and accountability.”

The sentencing was emotional at times.

George Floyd’s seven-year-old daughter, in a videotaped interview, spoke of missing her father and the games they played together.

Floyd’s brother Philonise spoke tearfully in court of having nightmares while watching endless replays of the infamous cellphone video that showed Floyd pleading for air under Chauvin’s neck.

Another Floyd brother, Terrence, sighed and looked directly at Chauvin.

“Why did you do it? Why did you stay there on his neck?” he demanded.

    The answer did not come.

Chauvin, not wanting to influence federal civil rights charges he was facing, only spoke briefly during the sentencing to offer his condolences to the Floyd family.

“I do want to give my condolences to the Floyd family,” said Chauvin.

He also said there would be other information eventually coming out that would be of interest to the Floyd family.

In a surprise, Chauvin’s mother Carolyn Pawlenty testified to her son’s character, calling him a “good man with a big heart”.

Outside the courthouse, her testimony, played on a loudspeaker, was greeted with groans and cat-calls.

Pathologist Reveals That Billionaire Jeffrey Epstein Was Murdered

Michael Baden, a pathologist contracted by the late dollar billionaire Jeffrey Epstein’s brother has said that the financier did not commit suicide in his jail cell as reported earlier. Baden states that his private study reveals that Epstein was murdered.

“I study evidence points toward homicide rather than suicide. The injuries are pointing to homicidal strangulation” Baden, a former New York City medical examiner who conducted private autopsy said.

According to Baden, the multiple fractures found in Epstein’s neck, specifically the hyoid bone and thyroid cartilage, were very rare for suicide.

On August 10th this year, Dollar Billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, who was on suicide watch, was found dead in New York’s high-security Metropolitan Correctional Center as he awaited trial on allegations that he trafficked girls as young as 14 for sex.

Barbara Sampson, New York’s chief medical examiner ruled that Epstein had killed committed suicide. Barbra’s ruling has since been disputed by Epstein’s lawyers and his brother Mark.

Epstein, 66, was a billionaire fund manager and proprietor in Banking who had deep connections with myriad of celebrities for years. He was a close buddy of  Britain’s Prince Andrew and US President Donald Trump.

His demise fuelled numerous conspiracy theories with most of them speculating that he had been murdered to stop him from revealing compromising information about some of his wealthy acquaintances and US political elites like the Clintons.

For example, days after his arrest online memes and Facebook statuses claimed the Obama administration, in order to protect former President Clinton, forged a once-secret deal in 2008 in Florida that allowed him to plead guilty to soliciting a minor for prostitution to avoid more serious charges.

Epstein was charged with one count of sex trafficking of minors and another of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of minors. He denied the charges but faced up to 45 years in jail if found guilty.

After news about Jeffrey Epstein’s death went viral globally, dozens of women came out and  alleged that they had been sexually abused by him and several have sued his estate for damages.

High Court Blocks Prosecution From Playing Video In Lawyer Willie Kimani Murder Case

Last week, Kenya Insights highlighed how City lawyer Willie Kimani His client Josephat Mwenda And Taxi Driver Joseph Muiruri Were Suffocated To Death.

The victims were kidnapped after leaving the Mavoko Law courts on June 23, 2016. A week later, their bodies were retrieved from the Athi River, near Donyo Sabuk police post, stashed in gunny bags.

The presecution team later on recorded the witness confession and the video submitted as evidence in the ongoing case of one of the most gruesome cold blood murder by uniformed cops.

However, the prosecution in the trial of suspects charged with the murder of lawyer Willie Kimani and two others suffered a blow  after the trial Judge recanted a submission to play a video of the crime scenes.

In the video that was documented by assistant superintendent of Police Joseph Muindi, captured Peter Ngugi, a former police informer explaining how the victims were executed and the places they were murdered in cold blood.

The prosecution stated that the rejected video evidence was part of the proof the prosecution relied on to ascertain the court that the accused persons were involved in the vicious murder.

Justice Jessie Lesiit however declined to allow the prosecution play the video, stating that there was no proof that the Police officer complied with the rules and procedures of the Evidence Act.

“It was a mistake for the investigating officer, Mr Clement Mwangi, to be present at the scenes, when Mr Muindi recorded the accused person.” Justice Lessit said

    According to the Justice Lessit, the presence of the investigating officer was a;

“compulsory oral examination of the accused person in total disregard of the law and rules of evidence.”

Last week, Mr Muindi told the court that he was approached by Mr Mwangi to record Mr Ngugi as part of event reconstruction.

On his defense, the accused one Mr Ngugi through his lawyer Kevin Michuki, challenged the creation of the video evidence compelled on August 10, 2016, opposing that the court should not allow him to implicate himself.

  • High Court Frees Police Inspector Who Murdered Ex-Gatundu North MP’s Son

High Court Frees Police Inspector Who Murdered Ex-Gatundu North MP’s Son

Dickson Mwangi Munene, Former Police Inspector in Nairobi who had been serving life imprisonment at Kamiti Maximum Prison for the murder of a former MP’s son has his life hopes restored after the High Court quashed his life sentence.

The convict Munene was in charge of Capital Hill police post was sentenced to death after he was found guilty of killing, James Ngang’a, son of former MP Patrick Muiruri, but this was commuted to life imprisonment after the new constitution banished death sentence.

On September 25, High Court Judge Luka Kimaru, set aside the life imprisonment, substituting it with a 20-year jail term which was to take effect from October 12, 2011. This is the day Munene and a friend Alexander Chepkonga were found guilty of murdering Ngang’a after an altercation at Crooked Q in Westlands.

Chepkonga successfully appealed against the death sentence and was set free.  The judge said in re-sentencing Munene, the court took into consideration the two years, that he had served in custody.

“Taking into account the entire circumstances of this case, this court is of the view that the sentence of life imprisonment that was imposed on him will not serve the ends of justice,” Justice Kimaru said.

According to Justice Kimaru, it was clear from the deceased’s family submission that they were still hurting. “It was clear that the applicant abused his powers as a police officer to unnecessarily causing the death of the deceased This court also put into consideration the ten years Munene has been in prison observing that he had applied himself gainfully by being a model prisoner,” Kimaru said.  Munene studied while in jail and earned a Masters degree in business studies.

The Commissioner-General of Prisons awarded Munene a certificate for being a model prisoner, a factor that worked in his favour in the re-sentencing.

“However, the life of the deceased cannot be restored. The gap that he left in the lives of his family can never be filled. It is a void that will remain for the remainder of the lives of the parents and siblings of the deceased. The pain that the family of the deceased suffered and continues to suffer must be weighed with the circumstances of the applicant, adding that this constituted an aggravating factor in sentencing.” Justice Kimaru stated

Munene made the application for re-sentencing following the Supreme Court decision in 2017, directing that all murder and robbery with violence convicts’ death sentences be reviewed. He said that he was the sole breadwinner of his family and his parents and his incarceration has affected their living standards.

The former officer told the court that he developed hypertension due to the conditions in prison. Through his lawyer, Kioko Kilukumi, Munene told the court that efforts to reconcile with the family of the deceased have been futile. He regretted the events that led to the killing.

Even as the courts decide to set the former killer police inspector, what is the moral value the courts will they be setting for the society? How many Police officers will turn rogue and killed people they cross paths on the streets? How many convicts have learned and changed their ways and yet they don’t get much rather such kind of sympathy from the courts?

Nairobi Woman Confesses How She Steals From Her Husband When He Gets Home Late and Drunk

Friday is a day that many in the current generation have considered an official drinking day and many other weekends “rituals and customs.”

Couple of relationships have been destroyed by Friday’s drinking spree. The most affected parties in this are men, especially tipplers.

On a Facebook post, a Nairobi woman confesses how she steals from her husband when he gets home late and stupidly drunk.

The woman says she has fiscal receipts similar to the ones that her husband often comes with in his pocket.

She takes all the cash from his pockets when he’s asleep. The lady then adds couple of drinks from the receipt that the husband came with.

She rewrites everything on her new receipts and returns it in the husbands’ pockets then waits for him to wake up in the morning and start a quarrel.

There have been so many cases of family feuds that have escalated to an extent of one, or both of the partners killing other.

Last month, the Police in Namanga, Kajiado County arrested a middle-aged drunk  man on suspicion of killing his wife and her suspected lover. The slashed bodies of the  two were found  in the man’s bedroom.

On a similar case,  earlier this week, Ruiru OCPD James Ngetich  said they have in custody a man who allegedly assaulted his wife to her death after they had a fight about the missing cash from his pocket.

The OCPD said that the woman’s life could have been saved by neighbours who snubbed her cries and grief pleas. Something that residents of Nairobi county don’t give priority to and most don’t care of whats happening in their neighbors houses.

This is not the first time this is happening, last month, Nyamira Deputy County Commissioner Michael Lesmam, confirmed that a 38-year-old woman stabbed her husband, 45, to death following a domestic disagreement.
The two are said to have disagreed after the husband accused the wife of stealing from him when he is sleeping.

Liquor and drugs have been the cause of many family feuds. Even though we can’t pin everything on drugs, being under influence of them plays a big role in some of this terrible decisions.

Depression and trust also has its role. The society is filled with depressed generation that are willing to do anything to go through their current situatioships.

No one has an upper hand in any form of violence. We can’t blame women for stealing from their sloshed husbands, just the same way we can’t blame the husbands from drinking to their slumber.

Relationships are always the best between two people who understand each other. Stop holding yourselves much to engagements that have no trust, care, or responsibility.
