ODM Ticket Scandal: Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok Accused of Trading on Raila’s Name for Millions

Busia Aspirant Claims Nairobi Minority Leader Demanded Cash for ‘Guaranteed’ Party Nomination

A growing scandal is threatening to drive a wedge between ODM party leader Raila Odinga and one of his vocal Nairobi allies after allegations emerged of a scheme to “sell” party tickets for the upcoming 2027 elections.

Makongeni MCA and Nairobi County Assembly Minority Leader Peter Imwatok has been accused of soliciting millions from Busia gubernatorial aspirant Engineer Vincent Sidai, allegedly claiming he could leverage his “close relationship” with Raila Odinga to secure the coveted ODM ticket.

Multiple sources close to the negotiations revealed to this reporter that Imwatok has been positioning himself as a gatekeeper to ODM nominations, particularly in Busia County where incumbent Governor Paul Otuoma is facing impeachment proceedings over corruption allegations.

“Imwatok approached Sidai claiming he could guarantee the ODM ticket for 2027,” said a source who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the allegations.

“He bragged that Raila confides in him about party matters and had already indicated that Otuoma would be denied the ticket due to the corruption scandals.”

The MCA reportedly told Sidai that for “a few million shillings,” he could “smoothen the path” for his endorsement by arranging exclusive meetings with key ODM officials and ensuring his name would be favorably mentioned to Raila.

This isn’t the first time Imwatok has allegedly attempted such a scheme.

Sources indicate he approached another senior government official with political ambitions in Busia County with similar promises, but the official declined his advances.

What makes the situation particularly explosive is Imwatok’s public habit of dropping Raila’s name in conversations and meetings, often implying he has the party leader’s ear on crucial decisions.

“He tells everyone he’s on the phone with Baba every day. He claims Raila consults him on party strategy and candidate selection,” said another source familiar with Imwatok’s operating style.

“He’s been using this perceived closeness to extract favors and influence from aspirants across several counties.”

Imwatok has been a subject of grapevine over similar issues.

Party insiders suggest Raila Odinga remains unaware of how his name is being used in these negotiations.

When contacted for comment, an official at ODM headquarters expressed surprise at the allegations and indicated that candidate selection follows formal party procedures that cannot be influenced by individual members regardless of their position.

The scandal puts Raila in a difficult position as he prepares for what could be his final political chapter.

Having built ODM’s reputation on anti-corruption principles, any perception that party tickets are for sale through proxies could damage both his personal legacy and the party’s electoral prospects.

Engineer Sidai, when reached for comment, was guarded in his response but didn’t deny the meetings with Imwatok. “I have been approached by many people claiming to have influence in ODM. I listen to everyone but make my own decisions,” he said.

As pressure mounts for clarity on the matter, all eyes are now on Raila Odinga to address whether one of his vocal Nairobi allies has been operating a nominations-for-cash scheme without his knowledge or blessing.

The silence from the ODM leader’s office has only fueled speculation about potential cracks in the relationship, with party loyalists concerned about the impact such allegations could have on the party’s image ahead of the crucial 2027 general elections.

Imwatok risking jail term over illegal firearm case

The controversial Makongeni MCA Peter Imwatok is facing a possible sentence to prison on August 24 2021 [today] after he was found possession of a firearm without a licence. Milimani Law Court senior resident magistrate Carolyne Njagi found that Imwatok had a case to answer after she received testimonies from six witnesses presented by state prosecutor Winnie Moraa.

“Upon receiving all the defence submissions, I will make my pronouncement on August 24, 2021 in open court,” Ms Njagi.

Imwatok is facing four charges including the illegal possession ammunition and a fake firearm’s licence. The MCA elected on ODM party ticket committed the offence on September 10 2017 in Galitos Restaurant, Industrial Area, Nairobi, where he was found in possession of a Ceska pistol.

The prosecution also told the court that the tainted MCA also had 13 rounds of live ammunition of 9mm caliber without a licence and a forged firearm certificate No7036 but Imwatok denied all the four counts and secured his freedom on a Sh200,000 bond with one surety of the same amount. The court also gave him an alternative cash bail of Sh50,000.

The former Nairobi County Assembly minority whip now risks serving at least five years in prison after Ms Moraa urged the court to place him on defence arguing that she had ample evidence to prove the case against the vocal city MCA.

Imwatok has also been embroiled in power wars within ODM party at the Nairobi County Assembly where fixed a section of the party leadership at the assembly under siege after he pocketed the likes of ODM SG Edwin Sifuna to protect him from his party members who were out to kick him from his minority whip position.

The second term MCA was accused of using the party’s to pocket bribes and goodies from corrupt individuals by his colleagues from the ODM party after he used his position to influence the finance department at City Hall to pay lawyer Tom Ojienda shs 50 million in legal fees for kick backs.

How Imwatok’s bribe sucked Sifuna into City Hall fiasco

The outspoken ODM secretary Edwin Sifuna is under serious criticism over his role in the party’s leadership confusion witnessed in Nairobi county assembly.

Sifuna became part of the mess after he wrote a letter to counter the ouster of the corrupt majority whip Peter Imwatok who has been tainting the image of the orange party through his dirty deals.

MCA Imwatok has been bragging of buying off Sifuna to defend him against his own party, members where members are supporting his ouster. He was kicked out of the plum position but still chose to camp at the Chungwa House where he reached a backdoor deal with the starving Sifuna to reverse his ouster by ODM MCAs.

Imwatok brags that Sifuna had to accept his bribe and save him from losing the prestigious position at the City Hall because they all hail from the same region, Western Kenya. He also added that offering of bribes is the culture at the Raila Odinga led party.

His deep fall out with the ODM party has been deep to an extent that saw his office being broken into by his colleagues to send a message to Raila Odinga to kick him from the party since he was being fed with lies from hungry cartels like Sifuna.

Sifuna joint forces with Imwatok to peddle lies that ODM MCAs were being used by their Jubile counterparts who control the County Assembly. Imwatok even went ahead to forge a letter where he accused ODM MCAs of colluding with Jubilee MCAs to plot a coup against him.

But instead of taking action against the tainted Imwatok, Sifuna purported that ODM did not authorize his removal and that his ouster went against the desires of the party leadership. Imwatok who has been riding on Sifuna’s support then resorted to sending threats to his colleagues who participated in his ouster as he threatened some with expulsion from the ODM party and committees.

Sifuna now remains a man sucked into City Hall scandals to protect corrupt ODM MCAs especialy Imwatok who was bribed with a Toyota V8, Sh15 million and an apartment along Langata Road. He was bribed by the corrupt city lawyer Prof. Tom Ojienda whom he helped recieve a controversial Sh50 million pay from City Hall.
