Kairo Tells Court That He’s Broke; Shows Sh61K Bank Balance

Controversial car dealer Khalif Kairo, real name Joseph Wambui, has told a Nairobi court he cannot afford to pay cash bail as he is broke.

Through his lawyer, Kairo informed Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina that he has abruptly become bankrupt and cannot raise the Sh 500,000 cash bail required for his release.

He presented a bank statement showing his account balance at only Sh 61,000, far below the court’s demand.

The court empathized and released him on a personal bond of Sh 3 million, requiring only a commitment to attend court.

He had already paid Sh 2 million cash bail in two other cases.

Earlier this week, Kairo requested his passport be released for a crowdfunding event in the US.

Magistrate Onyina released the passport, stating that despite objections from the prosecution, Kairo’s rights to movement should not be limited.

“The accused has been traveling outside the country and has always returned, there’s no fear he won’t return,” the court ruled, allowing the passport’s release but directed Kairo to return it upon returning to Kenya.

The case hearing is scheduled for May 26, 2025.

  • Khalif Kairo Seeks Donation After Losing Sh12.9M Raised On WeFunder

Khalif Kairo Seeks Donation After Losing Sh12.9M Raised On WeFunder

Khalif Kairo, the controversial city car dealer, has been forced to take a big bite of humble pie and is now appealing to the public for support following the abrupt closure of his WeFunder campaign account amid piling cases and an urgent need for cash bail for his freedom.

The account, which managed to raise an impressive Ksh12.9 million within just 24 hours, was shut down amid ongoing legal battles that have plagued Kairo’s business operations.

The closure was announced by Kairo himself via a public statement, where he linked the incident directly to his current legal challenges.

Kairo is currently in court, facing multiple charges related to his car sales business, which he claims have adversely affected his brand and operations, leading to the shutdown of his fundraising campaign.

He now claims that the ordeal has led him to close offices and is now appealing for well-wishers and those close to him to fundraise to help him settle his tribulations.

“Due to these legal issues, our WeFunder campaign was shut down last night after crossing the USD 100,000 mark. All is not lost, however; I am directly appealing to my supporters, friends, old clients, and associates to chip in whatever amount they can and give us a fighting chance against the unknown forces that are sabotaging my company,” he appealed.

Kairo, whose pastimes involve aviation, shared a pay bill number where people can donate, promising to keep an inventory of the money raised.

“Proceeds can be sent to the @kai_and_karo account below. This is not an investment but a donation. Once the dust settles, we will issue a statement and audit trail of how we will utilize the funds raised in rescuing our company,” he shared.

The WeFunder platform, known for facilitating crowdfunding for startups and businesses, did not provide specific details on why Kairo’s account was closed.

On January 28, after appearing for a court mention at Milimani Law Court, Kairo was immediately arrested by the DCI and taken to Parklands police station for further questioning and is scheduled to appear in court again.

Kairo, whose real name is Joseph Kairo Wambui, has been in the dock after allegedly defrauding his clients of Sh2.1 million and Sh2.9 million, respectively.

The latter amount is owed to Dona Ayalo Okoth in what the prosecution termed a fraudulent trick, claiming to be in a position to import a Subaru Outback vehicle, with the former being a deal for a Honda Vezel Hybrid from Japan.

Earlier, Kairo had asked the court to release his passport for a seven-day trip to the US for a fundraiser for his newly launched parent company based in the U.S., aiming to raise Sh258 million in seed funding.

Kairo now decries that he has tried everything in his ability to resolve his woes and do deliveries, but the negative media publicity and constant police involvement are putting him in deeper waters and severely affecting his ability to operate.

“There’s a well-coordinated effort to frustrate me, hound me out of business, and sabotage whatever we have built. It will not work. Arrest me even 100 times, but I don’t think I will relent. I will keep pushing, keep inspiring, and keep winning,” he wrote on X.

Kairo’s plea for help has sparked a mixed reaction online. Some sympathize with his plight, suggesting that the legal issues might be exaggerated or part of a larger vendetta against him. Others, however, criticize his past business practices and public statements, arguing that the shutdown might be justified.

Legal experts have advised that crowdfunding platforms often have strict policies regarding the legal standing of their users, especially when significant funds are involved. “When legal issues arise, platforms must act to protect both themselves and their investors,” commented legal analyst James Mwangi.

Kairo will spend yet another night behind bars as he awaits the court to give directions on his bond terms, this coming barely a week after paying a Sh2 million cash bail for a separate fraud case that continues to overwhelm and dent his pockets.

  • City Car Dealer Kairo in Court Yet Again Over Sh3M Car Import Fraud

City Car Dealer Kairo in Court Yet Again Over Sh3M Car Import Fraud

Controversial car dealer Khalif Kairo, whose real name is Joseph Wambui, found himself back in the legal spotlight on Wednesday when he was arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi.

This time, Kairo is accused of defrauding yet another client of Sh 3 million.

Just a day prior, Kairo was re-arrested at the same court premises following a court mention for one of his previous fraud cases. The new charges against him include cheating, as defined under section 315 of the Penal Code.

According to the police, between October 5 and 7, 2024, at Westlands Business Park in Nairobi, Kairo allegedly used fraudulent methods to secure Sh 3,045,000 from Dan Odhiambo Odundo. Kairo is accused of falsely claiming he could import a motor vehicle, a Volkswagen Tiguan 1.4 line from Japan for Odundo.

During his court appearance before Chief Magistrate Susan Shitubi, Kairo denied the charges. The case has now been transferred to another court where a decision on his bail and bond will be made.

In his defence, Kairo denied the allegations that he had misrepresented his ability to import the vehicle and that the complainant had been misled into paying the money.

Witnesses, including Simon Otieno Odhiambo, Albert Hesbon Odundo and police officer Wako Jarso are expected to testify in the case.

This latest arrest adds to a series of legal troubles for Kairo, who has been accused of defrauding clients in several vehicle importation deals.

These incidents have painted a picture of a businessman entangled in a web of legal challenges, with claims of taking payments without delivering the promised vehicles.

Kairo’s legal team, including prominent lawyers, has previously argued against the portrayal of him as a flight risk, asserting his cooperation with investigators.

However, the prosecution has highlighted his alleged attempts to evade justice, including an incident where he reportedly purchased a plane ticket to New York shortly before his initial arrest.

  • Lawyer Ahmednasir Offers To Help Besieged Businessman Kairo Out Of His Financial Ruin

Lawyer Ahmednasir Offers To Help Besieged Businessman Kairo Out Of His Financial Ruin

Renowned Kenyan lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has stepped forward to offer mediation services in the ongoing legal troubles of Joseph Kairo Wambui, popularly known as Khalif Kairo, a young entrepreneur in the second-hand car business.

In a statement issued on social media platform X, Ahmednasir expressed his surprise and disappointment at those celebrating Kairo’s recent legal woes.

“I dont know Khalif Kairo at all. Of course, I occasionally see him on X living on the fast lane. He has some small second-hand car business that lately got him into trouble. But it’s sad to see some lowlifes rejoicing at his misfortunes,” Ahmednasir stated. He highlighted the harsh business environment in Kenya, particularly for young entrepreneurs, and criticized the approach of resolving business disputes through litigation.

“Good people, all types of businesses face challenges and difficult times. And this young man is facing business challenges. Taking to court isn’t how to treat young aspiring Kenyans trying to make money in a difficult and hostile business environment,” the senior counsel remarked.

Kairo recently faced arrest and charges related to alleged fraudulent activities involving the sale of cars. His business, Kai and Karo, has been under scrutiny after clients accused him of failing to deliver vehicles despite full payment. Kairo’s legal battles have sparked a debate on the support and mentorship needed for young business owners in Kenya.

Kairo spent another night behind bars on Monday pending a ruling on his bail ruling that is due today.

He was on Monday arraigned before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina and charged with using fraudulent tricks in a bid to convince his clients to send him money to import cars he allegedly never delivered.

Ahmednasir, known for his legal acumen and for representing high-profile figures, announced his willingness to mediate between Kairo and his complainants. “I’m willing to mediate between him and the complainant and resolve this matter amicably. I can help!” he offered.

This move by Ahmednasir could potentially shift the narrative from courtroom battles to a more constructive dialogue aimed at finding a peaceful resolution. His intervention is seen by many as a beacon of hope for amicable settlements in business disputes, especially in an era where young entrepreneurs often lack the resources for prolonged legal battles.

Kairo has since accepted the gesture from Ahmednasir which undoubtedly put a spotlight on the need for alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in the business sector.

The prosecution, in a bid to have him tried while on remand, told Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina they are apprehensive that if he is released, he will flee the jurisdiction of the country and may never appear in court for trial.

The court heard that the accused had procured an air ticket on 10th January 2025, a day before his arrest and was meant to fly to New York, USA on 12th January 2025.

They relied on an affidavit sworn by an officer from DCI who went into detail on how long it took to trace Kairo. However, Kairo told the court that he has been cooperative since the time the complaints were lodged.

He said when the investigating officer called him on Saturday, he informed them that he was at a local bank in a mall in Nairobi.

“That’s where they found him,” said Ombetta.

“If he can tell the officers where he was prior to his arrest, would you say that’s the demeanour of someone who would abscond as alleged by the prosecution?” posed Ombeta.

Kairo’s defence team further trashed a flight ticket being used by the prosecution as proof that he wanted to flee the jurisdiction of the country.

“The ticket was booked way before the date of his arrest. It was not a plan to exit but as a person going on business,”  Ombeta said.

“Even before these charges were drafted, Kairo had planned to travel to New York for business.”

He contended that the matter before court is purely meant to tarnish his name and destroy his business environment.

Magistrate Onyina will rule on his bail application at 2 pm on Tuesday.

Controversial Car Dealer Khalif Kairo Arrested Again Amid Fraud Allegations in Nairobi

Nairobi, Kenya – January 12, 2025 – Khalif Kairo, the flamboyant Nairobi-based car dealer known for his social media presence and controversial business dealings, has been arrested again on allegations of fraud. This latest arrest comes on the heels of multiple complaints from clients who claim Kairo failed to deliver vehicles after receiving payment.

Kairo, whose real name is Joseph Kairu Wambui, was taken into custody at Capitol Hill Police Station on Saturday, January 11, after a client reported that a 2014 Volvo V40 sold by Kairo was repossessed due to an outstanding loan, contradicting the assurances given at the time of sale.

In videos doing rounds on social media, Kairo is seen being detained at Capitol Hill Police Station on Saturday amid a brief scuffle with the officers.

In one of the clips, Kairo could be heard complaining to officers not to harass him as they threatened him to cooperate.

“Si vita, you are not going to harass me, you can’t harass me bana! You wait I sort things out,” Kairo can be heard saying in the video.

One of the officers after an escalation said, “…Ebu thubutu! Wacha ujinga bwana! Do you think you are the first person to come here? Unaona niko na clients pale kwa ofisi…sitakuruhusu ulete ujinga hapa. Sisi tunapiga watu. Tutakupiga hapa saa hii tu!”

The police are said to have nabbed him after he allegedly failed to convince the victim that he was planning a trip to New York to secure funds and return to settle the matter.

This incident marks another chapter in a series of legal troubles for the businessman, who has faced similar accusations in recent months.

In the past, Kairo has been accused of taking money from clients under false pretenses, promising to import luxury cars which were never delivered. In December 2024, he was detained at Kasarani Police Station for allegedly defrauding a client of Ksh26 million for a high-end vehicle that was never provided.

The arrest has sparked a mix of reactions online, with some expressing support for Kairo while others call for accountability. He is expected to appear in court on Monday, where he will face charges related to obtaining money by false pretense. Legal experts have pointed out that this pattern of behavior could have significant consequences for Kairo’s business reputation and operations.

Despite these controversies, Kairo has maintained a public image of opulence and success, frequently sharing his lifestyle on social media. His car dealership, Kai and Karo, has been at the center of these allegations, with clients reporting delays, undelivered vehicles, and financial losses.

In response to the allegations, Kairo has previously described his legal troubles as typical challenges faced by entrepreneurs, especially when scaling up business ventures. However, the frequency and nature of these complaints paint a picture of systemic issues within his operations.

For now, Khalif Kairo remains in custody, with legal proceedings set to follow. The outcome of these cases will likely have lasting impacts on his business and personal life, underscoring the thin line between an entrepreneurial spirit and the pitfalls of alleged misconduct.
