Trump Claims Obama ‘Coup’ As Epstein Questions Mount

President Donald Trump sought Tuesday to distract from the growing furor over his administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein sex scandal by pushing extraordinary claims that Barack Obama tried to mount a coup.

The accusations, delivered in the Oval Office, followed a surprise announcement that Trump’s Department of Justice would question an imprisoned, key former assistant to Epstein.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement on X that disgraced British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell, serving a 20-year sentence for her role in Epstein’s alleged pedophile scheme, would be queried for new information.

“No lead is off-limits,” Blanche said.

However, the show of transparency appeared to be part of a concerted effort by the White House and Trump’s allies to quell speculation about the convicted sex offender, who was long rumored to be a pedophile pimp to the powerful and who committed suicide in his prison cell in 2019.

While meeting with the Philippines’ president in the White House, Trump dismissed the Epstein case as “a witch hunt.”

“The witch hunt that you should be talking about is, they caught President Obama, absolutely cold,” he said, launching into a meandering series of unsubstantiated accusations around Obama trying to “steal” the 2016 election, when Trump defeated Hillary Clinton.

“Obama was leading a coup,” Trump said.

An Obama spokesman called the claim “outrageous.”

The coup accusation centers on claims that fly in the face of multiple high-level official probes by the US government. However, it resonates with Trump’s far-right base — in part thanks to blanket coverage by the popular Fox News network.

Trump’s attacks on Obama are “part of a larger strategy of distraction, but they also serve another function: to cast the president as a victim of Democratic treachery,” said Todd Belt, at GW University’s Graduate School of Political Management.

Obama’s spokesman echoed this, saying Trump engaged in a “ridiculous and weak attempt at distraction.”

In another ploy to bury the Epstein controversy, Speaker Mike Johnson, a key Trump Republican loyalist, said he would shut down the House of Representatives until September.

This was to avoid what he called “political games” over attempts by mostly Democrats to force votes on exposing more about the Epstein case.

    – Entangled in conspiracy theory –

Epstein was awaiting trial on trafficking charges when he was found hanged in his New York cell.

Authorities declared it a suicide but the death super-charged fears, especially on the far-right, that a “deep state” cover-up is in place to prevent the names of Epstein’s clients from being made known.

Trump’s attempts to stop Epstein speculation clash with the fact that his own supporters are the ones who have most pushed conspiracy theories — and believed that Trump would resolve the mysteries.

They were outraged when Trump’s FBI and Justice Department said on July 7 that the death was confirmed a suicide and that Epstein never blackmailed prominent figures or even had a client list.

Trump tried numerous measures to placate his base, including ordering Attorney General Pam Bondi to try to obtain release of grand jury testimony in Epstein’s aborted New York case.

But the issue flamed up again last week when The Wall Street Journal reported that it had seen a birthday greeting penned in 2003 by Trump to Epstein on his 50th birthday.

The letter reportedly featured a hand-drawn naked woman, with Trump’s signature forming her pubic hair, and reference to their shared “wonderful secret.”

Trump insists he did not send the letter and has filed a lawsuit against the Journal.

Trump has never been accused of wrongdoing but was close friends with Epstein for years and was photographed attending parties with him.

Among the other celebrities with connections to Epstein was Britain’s Prince Andrew, who settled a US civil case in February 2022 brought by Virginia Giuffre, who claimed he sexually assaulted her when she was 17.

Giuffre committed suicide at her home in Australia in April.

Maxwell is the only former Epstein associate who has been convicted. She is appealing her sentence before the Supreme Court.

David Oscar Markus, Maxwell’s lawyer, confirmed on X that he was in discussions about her meeting with government representatives.

“We are grateful to President Trump for his commitment to uncovering the truth in this case,” Markus added.

What is ‘aggressive’ Prostate Cancer? All you need to know About What Biden is Dealing With

US former president Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an “aggressive form” of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, his office said in a statement on Sunday (May 18).

The disease is the most common cancer affecting males. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, for every 100 males, 13 will develop prostate cancer at some point in their lives. Although, all men are at risk of having prostate cancer, age is a crucial factor in this disease. The prostate is located just near the bladder and in front of the rectum.

According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer that appears very abnormal is given the highest grade, Grade 5. A Gleason score can go up to 10, showing how serious Biden’s condition is. A prostate cancer termed as “aggressive” based on the stage and grade.

Former US president Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an “aggressive form” of prostate cancer. The disease has now spread to his bones, his office announced in a statement on Sunday (May 18). The statement said Biden was diagnosed with “prostate cancer, characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone.” It further revealed that the former president is struggling with the disease, which appears to be hormone-sensitive.

“The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians,” Biden’s office said.

This came after Biden a small nodule was found in prostate after which Biden was evaluated.

After the announcement came, US President and Biden’s political rival Donald Trump said he was “saddened” by the news.

Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social and wrote, “We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.”

  • US President Joe Biden Pardons His Son Hunter

US President Joe Biden Pardons His Son Hunter

US President Joe Biden has issued an official pardon for his son Hunter, who was facing sentencing for two criminal cases, despite previously ruling it out.

In a statement, the president said his son had been “singled out” and called his cases “a miscarriage of justice”.

Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to tax charges earlier in September, and was found guilty of being an illegal drug user in possession of a gun in June – becoming the first child of a sitting president to be a convicted of a crime.

Reacting to the pardon, President-elect Donald Trump said: “Does the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the [6 January] Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? Such an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!”

Trump was referring to his supporters who stormed the US Capitol on 6 January 2021 in a bid to overturn Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election.

Joe Biden’s full and unconditional pardon for his son comes after the president had previously said he would not give him clemency.

Just a couple of months ago, in September, the White House press secretary said that Biden would not issue a pardon for his son.

But on Sunday evening, President Biden said although he believed in the justice system, “politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice”.

“From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted,” he said.

Biden said he wrestled with the decision, and added: “once I made this decision this weekend, there was no sense in delaying it further.”

“I hope Americans will understand why a father and a President would come to this decision,” he said.

In a reaction statement, Hunter Biden said mistakes he made during the darkest days of his addiction had been “exploited to publicly humiliate and shame” his family for political sport.

“I will never take the clemency I have been given today for granted and will devote the life I have rebuilt to helping those who are still sick and suffering,” the 54-year-old added.

The younger Biden has been sober for five-and-a-half years, his father said.

This is not the first time a US president has pardoned a member of their family.

Bill Clinton pardoned his younger half-brother, Roger Clinton, for a 1985 cocaine-related offence in 2001.

In 2020, Donald Trump pardoned Charles Kushner, the father-in-law of his daughter Ivanka. President-elect Trump has recently announced that Kushner will be the new ambassador to France.

Hunter Biden pleaded guilty to nine counts of federal tax fraud in September, for which he had been facing up to 17 years in prison.

He was also convicted of three felonies in connection with a gun purchase in June, for which he had been facing up to 25 years in prison.

Sentencing for these cases had been scheduled for 12 and 16 December.

His legal troubles had been a dark cloud over his father’s presidential campaign, which came to an end in July after Biden pulled out of the election race.

Biden endorsed Vice-President Kamala Harris to succeed him as the Democratic candidate, who lost the election to Republican Donald Trump in November.

Trump is set to take over the Oval Office from Biden on 20 January 2025 – Inauguration Day.

US Embassy In Kyiv Shuts Down Over Anticipated Air Attack

(Reuters) – The U.S. embassy in Kyiv has received information of a potential significant air attack on Wednesday and will be closed, the U.S. Department of State Consular Affairs said in a statement.

“Out of an abundance of caution, the embassy will be closed, and embassy employees are being instructed to shelter in place,” the department said in a statement published on the website of the U.S. embassy in Kyiv.

“The U.S. Embassy recommends U.S. citizens be prepared to immediately shelter in the event an air alert is announced.”

The warning comes a day after Ukraine used U.S. ATACMS missiles to strike Russian territory, taking advantage of newly granted permission from the outgoing administration of U.S. President Joe Biden on the war’s 1,000th day.

Russia had been warning the West for months that if Washington allowed Ukraine to fire U.S., British and French missiles deep into Russia, Moscow would consider those NATO members to be directly involved in the war in Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in October that Moscow will respond to Ukraine’s strikes with U.S.-made weapons deep into Russia.
On Tuesday, Putin lowered the threshold for a nuclear strike in response to a broader range of conventional attacks, with nuclear risks rising amid the highest tensions between Russia and West in more than half a century.
  • Biden Agrees To Give Ukraine Anti-Personnel Mines

Biden Agrees To Give Ukraine Anti-Personnel Mines

BBC—US President Joe Biden has agreed to give Ukraine anti-personnel land mines, a US defence official told the BBC.

The official, who was speaking on condition of anonymity, said such mines would be delivered soon and Washington expected that they would be used on Ukraine’s territory.

Kyiv was also committed to not using such mines in densely-populated areas, the official said.

The move is seen as an attempt to slow Russian troops who have been steadily advancing in Ukraine’s east in recent months.

The provision of anti-personnel land mines is the latest move by the outgoing US administration to bolster Ukraine’s war effort before Donald Trump returns to the White House on 20 January.

Russia has deployed landmines liberally since the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 but international objections to the use of such weapons on the grounds that they pose a risk to civilians had prevented the Biden administration from signing off on them.

The US defence official confirmed to the BBC that Ukraine had pledged to use only mines that remained active for a limited period of time.

Earlier, it was confirmed that US-made longer-range Army Tactical Missile System (Atacms) missiles had struck targets inside Russia only days after reports emerged that the White House had granted permission for their use.

Russia’s defence ministry said the strike had targeted the Bryansk region bordering Ukraine to the north on Tuesday morning.

It said five missiles had been shot down and one had caused damage – with its fragments starting a fire at a military facility.

But two US officials said initial indications suggested Russia had intercepted just two missiles out of around eight fired by Ukraine.

The BBC has not been able to verify independently the contradicting figures.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Washington of trying to escalate the conflict.

The Kremlin has vowed to retaliate.

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin approved changes to Russia’s nuclear doctrine, setting out new conditions under which the country would consider using its arsenal.

It now says an attack from a non-nuclear state, if backed by a nuclear power, will be treated as a joint assault on Russia.

Commenting on the changes, US state department spokesperson Matthew Miller said: “Since the beginning of its war of aggression against Ukraine, [Russia] has sought to coerce and intimidate both Ukraine and other countries around the world through irresponsible nuclear rhetoric and behaviour.”

  • Details Of Ruto’s Phone Call With Donald Trump Emerge

Details Of Ruto’s Phone Call With Donald Trump Emerge

President William Ruto has spoken with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, discussing several key issues.

Top of the agenda was the Kenya-led peacekeeping mission in Haiti, which Ruto has championed for months.

“I briefed President Trump on the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti and possible areas of cooperation with the US government on this important conflict-resolution initiative,” said Ruto.

The two leaders also explored ways to strengthen Kenya-US trade, investment, security, and bilateral relations.

This call came shortly after Ruto spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken about the Haiti mission on Thursday evening.

“Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke with Kenyan President William Ruto on November 7 to thank him for Kenya’s continued leadership of the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti as it works with Haitian counterparts to restore peace and security for the Haitian people,” read a statement from Blinken’s office.

Ruto’s outreach is part of a concerted effort to gain more support for the peacekeeping mission in the Caribbean nation.

Last month, he urged the international community to honour their commitments to support the Haiti mission, saying there is an urgent need for personnel, logistics, and financial resources to sustain and expand the security mission.

The talks follow Trump’s election as the 47th president of the United States, raising questions about the future of Kenya-US relations.

Several trade and security agreements established under outgoing President Joe Biden’s administration now face uncertainty with Trump’s impending leadership.

  • Kenyans Frustrated With Their Government Celebrate Trump’s Win

Kenyans Frustrated With Their Government Celebrate Trump’s Win

Seven months after Kenya’s President William Ruto was hosted by President Joe Biden at the White House in a historic state visit, Donald Trump’s election victory sparked celebrations among opposition activists.

Kenyans concerned over the perceived US backing of Ruto’s administration and some of its more unpopular economic policies are hoping for a reevaluation of US support under Trump.

For a start, they’re calling for the removal of the Biden-appointed US ambassador to Kenya, former HP and eBay CEO Meg Whitman, who played a central role in the elevation of Kenya’s relationship with the US to non-NATO ally status in May. She has also led a push to attract investment by US tech firms to Kenya, East Africa’s largest economy.

Calls for her removal were widely shared across social media, trending on platforms including X soon after it became apparent that Trump was headed for victory. Whitman — and by extension Washington’s — relationship with Ruto has long been seen as a problem in some quarters. Critics range from opposition activists in Kenya to officials in Washington.

Ruto’s popularity took a hit in the months following the US state visit due to massive youth-led nationwide protests against proposed tax hikes and corruption as well as police abductions and killings of protesters. A survey published by research company InfoTrak in October said 73% of Kenyans thought the country “was headed in the wrong direction,” with corruption and police abductions among Kenyans’ top concerns.

Ruto congratulated Trump on Thursday for his win, writing that he looked forward to “deepening our collaboration under your leadership as we work together to address global challenges”.

Whitman faced a backlash last Thursday after the US failed to appear among signatories of a joint statement by Western envoys condemning a reported increase in abductions and enforced disappearances in the country, having previously signed similar statements alongside European counterparts. Police in the country have denied involvement in abductions.

“If President Donald Trump’s return to the White House brings an end to Meg Whitman’s ambassadorial tenure in Nairobi, then we as Kenyans have something to celebrate,” veteran lawyer and human rights activist Gitobu Imanyara wrote on X, referencing the abductions.

As Kamala Harris perhaps realized a little too late, in 2024 the Joe Biden hug can be damaging for political ambition. The optics of Ruto’s association with Biden — capped by the first state visit by an African leader in 15 years and Whitman’s perceived closeness to the Kenyan president — has helped fuel disaffection against the government.

Critics of Washington’s approach see the US as an enabler of harmful government decisions in Kenya.

However, Caroline Wandiri, an international relations professor at the Nairobi-based Kenyatta University, told me Whitman’s future would ultimately not be determined by Kenyans’ complaints, but by whether she was aligned with Trump’s vision for the US and its interests around the world. Even though Whitman was appointed by a Democratic president, she has previously run as a Republican for the governorship of California.

Kenya has increasingly been seen as a key geopolitical partner for the US on the continent amid waning US influence in West Africa, along with increasing Russian and Chinese presence.

“If he feels that she (Whitman) or any other person is not representing the United States’ interests very well, or if he’d want someone to confide with or get along with easily, there’s no reason not to make a change,” Wandiri said. “That would not be strange.”

  • Biden Says ‘Not Confident’ Of Peaceful US Election

Biden Says ‘Not Confident’ Of Peaceful US Election

(AFP)-Biden’s warning came with lawmakers and analysts voicing concern over increasingly bellicose campaign language ahead of the vote.

Trump — who survived an assassination bid in July and another apparent plot in September — alleged widespread fraud after his defeat to Biden, and pro-Trump rioters riled up by his false claims ransacked the US Capitol.

“I’m confident it will be free and fair. I don’t know whether it will be peaceful,” Biden told reporters as he discussed the election.

“The things that Trump has said and the things that he said last time out when he didn’t like the outcome of the election were very dangerous.”

Trump was impeached in 2021 for inciting the insurrection after hundreds of his supporters — exhorted by the defeated Republican to “fight like hell” — battered police as they smashed windows at the Capitol and broke through doors.

    ‘They cheat like hell’

He has been indicted over what prosecutors allege was a “private criminal effort” to subvert the election that culminated in the violence.

Trump — who is due to return to the venue of his first assassination bid in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday — has long been assailed over his violent rhetoric.

Biden made his comments during what was the first appearance of his presidency in the White House briefing room, where he touted his administration’s achievements as his vice president, Kamala Harris, battles Trump.

Harris and Trump meanwhile were barnstorming the battleground states that are likely to decide who wins the White House.

Trump campaigned Friday in North Carolina, where he reprised his claims of 2020 voter fraud: “We should get elected, but remember this, they cheat like hell,” he said.

He also visited neighboring Georgia, a swing state narrowly claimed by Biden four years ago but won by Trump in 2016 — and one of the biggest prizes of the 2024 election map.

The Republican inserted himself aggressively into Georgia politics after his 2020 defeat, pushing for state officials to “find” enough votes to overturn Biden’s victory.

Trump, 78, was charged by state prosecutors with racketeering, in a case that is on pause and expected to start up again after the election. He denies wrongdoing.

    ‘Biggest loser’

On Friday Trump joined Georgia Republican Governor Brian Kemp after receiving a briefing on the devastation wreaked by Hurricane Helene, the deadliest storm to hit the US mainland since Katrina in 2005.

Trump has repeatedly spread misinformation about the federal response to the disaster, falsely alleging that funding for relief has been misappropriated by Harris and redirected towards migrants.

Harris, who is neck-and-neck with Trump in all seven swing states, rallied Friday in Michigan — a union stronghold that epitomized the US manufacturing decline of the 1980s.

The Democratic contender accused Trump of jeopardizing Michigan auto jobs.

“This is a man who has only ever fought for himself. This is a man who has been a union buster his entire career,” she said at a stop in Detroit.

Later, in the city of Flint, she branded Trump “one of the biggest losers of manufacturing jobs in American history.”

Flint is a majority Black city where a 2010s scandal over lead-tainted water highlighted government mismanagement and the disproportionate damage to poor and non-white communities.

She reminded rallygoers that the election is just one month away, and early voting has already begun in several states.

“Folks, the election is here. And we need to energize, organize and mobilize,” Harris said.

Earlier her campaign announced the country’s first Black president, Barack Obama, would stump for her in Pennsylvania and other swing states from next week as she woos undecided voters in the US heartland.

This marriage made her the stepmother to Doug’s children, Cole and Ella Emhoff.

In 2019, Kamala wrote an essay for Elle about her love for Cole and Ella. She described them as her “endless source of love and pure joy.”

“When Doug and I got married, Cole, Ella, and I decided we didn’t like the term ‘stepmom,’” she wrote. “Instead, they came up with the name ‘Momala.’”

She ended the essay with gratitude: “I am so thankful to Doug, to Kerstin (Doug’s ex-wife), and most of all, to Ella and Cole. I can say one thing with certainty, my heart wouldn’t be whole, nor my life full, without them.”

  • Hunter Biden Found Guilty Of Lying About Drug Use To Buy Gun

Hunter Biden Found Guilty Of Lying About Drug Use To Buy Gun

President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden was convicted by a jury on Tuesday of lying about his drug use to illegally buy a gun, a verdict Democrats may seize upon to counter Donald Trump’s claim of a justice system weaponized against him.

A jury in Wilmington, Delaware, federal court found him guilty on all three counts against him, making Hunter Biden the first child of a sitting U.S. president to be convicted of a crime.

A verdict of the 12-member jury must be unanimous on each count.

The trial followed the May 30 criminal convictionof Trump, the first former U.S. president to be found guilty of a felony and the Republican challenger to Joe Biden, a Democrat, in the Nov. 5 election.

Trump, convicted on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to cover up a sex scandal, accuses Democrats of pursuing that case and three other criminal prosecutions to prevent him from regaining power in his rematch with Joe Biden.

Congressional Democrats have pointed to cases including the Hunter Biden prosecution as evidence that Joe Biden is not using the justice system for political or personal ends, having said last week he would not pardon his son if convicted.

The Hunter Biden case was brought by U.S. Department of Justice Special Counsel David Weiss, a Trump appointee.

Weiss has also charged Hunter Biden with three felony and six misdemeanor tax offenses in California, alleging he failed to pay $1.4 million in taxes between 2016 and 2019 while spending millions on drugs, escorts, exotic cars and other high-ticket items.

Hunter Biden has pleaded not guilty to those charges. A trial is scheduled for Sept. 5 in Los Angeles.

The Delaware trial included prosecution testimony by Hunter Biden’s ex-wife, former girlfriend and sister-in-law, who gave firsthand accounts of his spiraling addiction in the weeks before and after he bought the gun in October 2018.

Prosecutors also showed text messages, photos and bank records that they said showed Biden was deep in the throes of addiction when he bought the gun and knowingly broke the law by answering “no” to being a drug user on a government screening form.

Biden’s lawyers sought to show he was not using drugs when he bought the gun and did not intend to deceive because he didn’t consider himself a drug user when he filled out the form.

The defense called Hunter Biden’s daughter, Naomi Biden, who testified that her father seemed to be doing well when she saw him shortly before and after he bought the gun.

The sentencing guidelines for the gun-related charges against Biden are 15 to 21 months, but legal experts say defendants in similar cases often get shorter sentences and are less likely to be incarcerated if they abide by the terms of their pretrial release.

Americans To Construct Sh471B Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway

Kenya Highways Authority (KeNHA) and U.S. infrastructure investment manager Everstrong Capital have signed a $3.6 billion (about Sh471 billion) Project Development Agreement (PDA) to build a 440 km (273 miles) highway between the capital and port city Mombasa.

President William Ruto, unveiled the Usahihi Nairobi to Mombasa Expressway, during his visit with the President of the United States, Joe Biden, while visiting the White House on Thursday the 23rd of May 2024.

According to the company, expressway is the largest toll road project in Africa and envisions a transformative symbol of Kenya’s dedication to transparent and innovative infrastructure development.

A bigger highway between Mombasa and Nairobi has been on the wish list of successive governments aiming to ease congestion on the busy road to and from the port.

“The project anticipates attracting investments totalling $3.6 billion, sourced from international investors, development agencies, pension funds and an exceptionally large number of Kenyan private investors,” Everstrong said in its statement.

    Financing

Funding of the project has been an issue, the company in a statement stated that Kenyans won’t be burdened with the initial funding as the model will allow it to self manage.

“Usahihi will pay for itself, not burdening the Government of Kenya. It is structured as a Public Private Partnership with revenue coming from road users. Usahihi will organize finance, construction, tolling, operation, and maintenance of the expressway under a 30-year concession with construction lasting 3-4 years,” the company stated.

“The construction of the Usahihi expressway poses no financial risks to the Kenyan government, as it is structured to operate independently from the Government of Kenya’s balance sheet and is projected to be financially self-sustaining. The project anticipates attracting investments totaling USD 3.6 billion, sourced from international investors, development agencies, pension funds, and an exceptionally large number of Kenyan private investors.” It added.

    Design

The expressway is engineered to accommodate the safe passage of trucks, buses, and automobiles, featuring rest stops, wildlife observation points, electric vehicle charging infrastructure powered by renewable energy sources, and strategically located overpasses designed by environmental experts based on animal migration patterns to facilitate safe wildlife migration.

It’s expected to bring the current 10.5-hour journey between Nairobi and Mombasa, known as one of Africa’s most dangerous routes for both people and wildlife, down to a safe journey of approximately 4.5 hours.

Everstrong Capital’s proficient team consists of world-class Engineering, Procurement, and Construction firms.

Amb. Kyle McCarter, Everstrong Capital Partner & Usahihi Chairman, says, “The Usahihi Expressway isn’t just a project; it’s a testament to the transformational power of doing things right. It symbolizes passion, commitment, and transparency, demonstrating how to deliver immense value, not only to Kenyan citizens but to the entire East Africa region. It’s about changing lives and shaping the future of Kenya.”

“The U.S. Embassy welcomes the signing of a project development agreement, which marks a significant step forward in the construction of a new Nairobi-Mombasa highway,” said Meg Whitman, United States Ambassador to Kenya. “This stretch of road is vital for Kenya’s continued economic growth and a new
highway will be safer for all drivers, passengers, and pedestrians who depend on this important corridor for work, pleasure, and living.”

William Ruto, President of Kenya stated, “More than just a road, the Usahihi Expressway sets a standard for transparent, sustainable, and community-centered development, fostering economic growth and environmental protection, serving as a global inspiration for ethical development. It embodies a commitment to transparency, hard work, and the empowerment of Kenyan citizens by engaging them as users, owners, and investors, creating a cycle of localized benefits and ensuring that communities directly reap the rewards of their investment and participation.”

Everstrong Capital, is a US-owned infrastructure investment manager with a presence in both the US and Kenya with a focus on advancing sustainable infrastructure development across Africa.

It initiated the Everstrong Kenya Infrastructure Fund (EKIF), which is dedicated to financing projects in energy, transportation, communication, and social infrastructure within East Africa and has played a pivotal role in significant infrastructure projects, including its investment in Gulf Power’s Athi River Power project and its founding sponsorship of Milele Energy, an independent power producer holding a 25% stake in the Lake Turkana Wind Project. Everstrong Capital is also assisting SunCode Energy as it enters the African Solar Energy market.

  • Biden To Extend ‘Major Non-NATO Ally’ Status To Kenya, What This Means

Biden To Extend ‘Major Non-NATO Ally’ Status To Kenya, What This Means

Kenya is set to get a major boost in its military capabilities after reports that President Joe Biden will be extending major non-NATO ally status to Kenya during the three-day state visit by President William Ruto.

American publication, Politico has confirmed the plans citing senior U.S. officials.

Kenya will become the first sub-Saharan nation to receive the designation, which allows the recipient country to obtain more sophisticated weaponry from the United States and engage in closer security cooperation.

This could give the U.S.-Kenya relationship more leverage given their lengthened military cooperation in counterterrorism operations against Al Shabaab and other global terrorist organizations that have for decades been attacking Kenya.

Kenya has participated in the Ukraine Defense Contact Group and an international maritime task force launched by the Biden administration in December in response to Houthi attacks against vessels operating in the Red Sea.

While Biden is yet to travel to Africa, Washington continued worry over Chinese influence in the continent remains clear and this latest move could further consolidate its intentions to keep its grip on the region with Kenya being a strategic partner.

The designation of Kenya as a major non-NATO ally comes when the preparations for Kenya to deploy police officers to Haiti as part of U.N.-led effort to address the security crisis in the Caribbean country has hit fever pitch and already bases are being set up for their arrival.

Some 1,000 Kenyan police officers are set to arrive soon in Haiti, part of a multilateral security support mission that aims to help quell gang violence. Other countries expected to back up Kenyan forces include the Bahamas, Barbados, Benin, Chad and Bangladesh.

Ruto’s decision to send police forces to Haiti was welcomed by Biden administration officials as an unprecedented undertaking and a show of global leadership by Kenya.

Kenya will become the 19th country to be named a major non-NATO ally, the most recent addition since Biden bestowed the title on Qatar in March 2022. Three other countries on the African continent — Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia — have already gained the status.

The U.S. is not treaty-bound to come to such a country’s defense as it would be with actual NATO allies. But the designation, according to the State Department, provides “certain benefits in the areas of defense trade and security cooperation.

Kenya will join the list of other non-NATO allies including Japan, South Korea, Australia, Israel, Egypt, Jordan, Argentina, New Zealand, Thailand, and Pakistan, among others.

  • US Lawmakers Accuse House Speaker Of Disrespecting Africa By Denying Ruto Address To Congress

US Lawmakers Accuse House Speaker Of Disrespecting Africa By Denying Ruto Address To Congress

Lawmakers from President Joe Biden’s Democratic Party on Friday accused House Speaker Mike Johnson of disrespecting Africa after he did not invite President William Ruto to address Congress during an upcoming Washington visit.

Biden has invited the key US regional ally next week for a state visit – the most prestigious trip a foreign leader can pay to Washington, which includes a ceremonial welcome and formal dinner at the White House.

Leaders on state visits often also address joint sessions of Congress, but Johnson, a Republican, brushed aside an appeal for an invitation to Ruto made by both the top Democrat and Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

In a letter to Johnson, 14 House Democrats told Johnson they were “extremely disappointed” by the decision and said, “The people of Kenya deserve more respect.”

“Foreign adversaries like China, Russia and Iran are working tirelessly to subvert America’s alliances, particularly in Africa,” wrote the lawmakers including Gregory Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“Your choice not to provide the Kenyan president, a key African partner, the opportunity to address the Congress helps create an opening for autocratic adversaries to make inroads in African public opinion.”

Four foreign leaders have addressed joint sessions of the current Congress, in which the Republicans control the House – the prime ministers of India and Japan and the presidents of Israel and South Korea.

“Failing to offer the same invitation to President Ruto risks sending the message that African partnerships are less valued by Congress,” the Democratic lawmakers wrote.

The state visit comes as the US election season enters full swing, with many lawmakers occupied by campaigning.

US Elections: Biden and Trump Agree To Hold First Presidential Debate On June 27

US President Joe Biden and his predecessor, Donald Trump, agreed to hold the first presidential debate on June 27 as the campaign season prepares to enter high gear ahead of November’s national election.

“I’ve received and accepted an invitation from @CNN for a debate on June 27th. Over to you, Donald. As you said: anywhere, any time, any place,” Biden said on X.

Biden also released a video in which he said, “Donald Trump lost two debates to me in 2020. Since then, he hasn’t shown up for a debate. Now he’s acting like he wants to debate me again. Well, make my day, pal. I’ll even do it twice.”

Earlier Wednesday, Trump said on his Truth Social network that he is “ready and Willing to Debate Crooked Joe at the two proposed times in June and September.”

“I would strongly recommend more than two debates and, for excitement purposes, a very large venue, although Biden is supposedly afraid of crowds – That’s only because he doesn’t get them. Just tell me when, I’ll be there. ‘Let’s get ready to Rumble!!!’” he added.

CNN, the television network that will host the first debate, said the Trump campaign confirmed the date. The second debate has yet to be scheduled but is likely to be in September before early voting begins.

But Biden said in another X post that he “received and accepted an invitation” to debate Trump on Sept. 10. That face-off would be hosted by the ABC television network, he said.

Biden earlier this month said during an interview with radio host Howard Stern that he would be “happy” to debate Trump. The two campaigns have spent the past couple of weeks attempting to iron out the details.

CNN said the June 27 debate will be held at 9 p.m. Eastern Time in a studio at the television networks’ Atlanta, Georgia headquarters. No audience will be present “to ensure candidates may maximize the time allotted in the debate.”

To participate, candidates must receive at least a 15% approval rating in four separate national polls of registered or likely voters. That means independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. will unlikely qualify for the showdown. Kennedy polls at around 8% nationally on surveys on which he is included.

Debate moderators will be announced at a later date.

  • Trump Warns Of ‘Bloodbath’ If He Loses Presidential Election

Trump Warns Of ‘Bloodbath’ If He Loses Presidential Election

(AFP)- Days after securing his position as the presumptive Republican nominee, the former president also warned of a “bloodbath” if he is not elected – though it was not clear what he was referring to, with the remark coming in the middle of comments about threats to the US auto industry.

“The date – remember this, November 5 – I believe it’s going to be the most important date in the history of our country,” the 77-year-old told rally-goers in Vandalia, Ohio, repeating well-worn criticisms that his rival, President Joe Biden, is the “worst” president.

Criticising what he said were Chinese plans to build cars in Mexico and sell them to Americans, he stated: “We’re going to put a 100 percent tariff on every single car that comes across the line, and you’re not going to be able to sell those cars if I get elected.”

“Now if I don’t get elected it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole – that’s going to be the least of it, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the country. That’ll be the least of it. But they’re not going to sell those cars.”

As Trump’s comment gained traction on social media, Biden’s campaign released a statement calling the Republican a “loser” at the ballot box in 2020 who then “doubles down on his threats of political violence.”

“He wants another January 6 but the American people are going to give him another electoral defeat this November because they continue to reject his extremism, his affection for violence, and his thirst for revenge,” the campaign said, referring to the deadly attack on the US Capitol by Trump supporters in 2021.

Later, Biden spoke at a dinner in Washington, where he also warned of “an unprecedented moment in history.”

“Freedom is under assault… The lies about the 2020 election, the plot to overturn it, to embrace the Jan. 6 insurrection pose the greatest threat to our democracy since the American Civil War,” he said.

“In 2020, they failed, but … the threat remains.”

The 81-year-old, who has waved off concerns that he is too old for a second term, leavened his rhetoric with humor.

“One candidate’s too old and mentally unfit to be president,” he said of the presidential race. “The other guy’s me.”

    Border issues

Earlier this month Trump and Biden each won enough delegates to clinch their party nominations in the 2024 presidential race, all but assuring a rematch and setting up one of the longest election campaigns in US history.

Among the issues Trump is campaigning on is sweeping reform of what he calls Biden’s “horror show” immigration policies, despite the ex-president successfully pressuring Republicans to block a bill in Congress that included the toughest border security measures in decades.

On Saturday he invoked the border again as he reached out to minorities who have traditionally voted Democrat.

He said Biden had “repeatedly stabbed African-American voters in the back” by granting work permits to “millions” of immigrants, warning that they and Hispanic Americans “are going to be the ones that suffer the most.”

For decades Ohio had been seen as a bellwether battleground state, though it has trended more strongly Republican since Trump’s White House win in 2016.

The rally came a day after Trump’s former vice president, Mike Pence, said he would not endorse his old boss for a second White House term.

  • Biden, Macron Prepared To Sound Out Putin Urge Citizens Not To Panic, Warns Of Ukraine Way ‘Any Day’

Biden, Macron Prepared To Sound Out Putin Urge Citizens Not To Panic, Warns Of Ukraine Way ‘Any Day’

(AFP)-US President Joe Biden and France’s Emmanuel Macron prepared to sound out Russia’s Vladimir Putin on Saturday and Ukraine urged its citizens not to panic after Washington warned that an all-out invasion could begin “any day”.

Weeks of tensions that have seen Russia surround its western neighbour with more than 100,000 troops revved up another notch when the Kremlin launched its biggest naval drills in years across the Black Sea.

The exercises off the coast of Ukraine’s Odessa added urgency to a hastily arranged call Saturday between Biden and Putin aimed at defusing one of the gravest crises in East-West relations since the Cold War.

The Russian leader is also due to speak later Saturday with Macron. The talks come after a week of frantic shuttle diplomacy by the French leader and European officials did little to ease fears of war breaking out in eastern Europe.

Russia on Saturday added to the ominous tone by pulling some of its diplomatic staff out of Ukraine.

The foreign ministry in Moscow said its decision was prompted by fears of “possible provocations from the Kyiv regime”.

But Washington and a host of European countries cited the growing threat of a Russian invasion as they called on their citizens to leave Ukraine as soon possible.

Germany became the latest European country to advise its citizens to leave Ukraine while the US embassy in Kyiv ordered non-emergency staff to leave Ukraine.

The prospect of frightened Westerners fleeing their country prompted Ukraine’s foreign ministry to issue an appeal to its citizens to keep calm.

“At the moment, it is critically important to remain calm, to consolidate inside the country, to avoid destabilising actions and those that sow panic,” the ministry said.

“Ukrainian diplomats are in constant contact with all its key partners, swiftly receiving the information needed to prepare a well-timed response.”

    – ‘Any day now’ –

Washington on Friday issued its most dire warning yet that Russia had assembled enough forces to launch a serious assault at any moment.

“Our view that military action could occur any day now, and could occur before the end of the Olympics, is only growing in terms of its robustness,” US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan warned.

US military assessments had earlier said the Kremlin may want to wait for the Beijing Winter Olympic Games to end on February 20 before launching an offensive so as not to offend Russia’s ally China.

Sullivan stopped short of saying that the United States has concluded that Putin has made the decision to attack.

But some US media cited intelligence sources and officials as saying that Washington believes that a war could begin at some point after Putin concludes talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Moscow on Tuesday.

The German leader is due to travel to Kyiv on Monday and then visit Putin as part of Europe’s efforts to keep the lines of communication open with Moscow.

Russia is demanding binding security guarantees from the West that includes a pledge to roll NATO forces out of eastern Europe and to never expand into Ukraine.

Washington has flatly rejected the demands while offering to discuss a new European disarmament agreement with Moscow.

Russia has called the US proposal woefully insufficient.

    – ‘Pivotal moment’ –

The diplomatic push will continue on Saturday with talks between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Blinken told a press conference in Fiji that the crisis had entered “a pivotal moment”.

“If Russia is genuinely interested in resolving this crisis of its own making through diplomacy and dialogue, we’re prepared to do that,” Blinken said.

He added that dialogue would only be possible if accompanied by “de-escalation.”

“So far, we’ve only seen escalation from Moscow,” he said.

Blinken said the United States was also still waiting for a response to “some of the ideas” floated by Washington.

Macron’s talks with Putin came after a visit to Moscow last Monday during which he said he had secured a pledge “that there will be no degradation nor escalation” from the Kremlin.

    – Western, NATO unity –

Sullivan repeated warnings that Russia risks severe Western sanctions and said that NATO is now “more cohesive, more purposeful, more dynamic than any time in recent memory.”

The Pentagon announced it was sending 3,000 more troops to bolster ally Poland.

European leaders also resolved to punish Russia with severe economic sanctions if it attacks.

“The aim is to prevent a war in Europe,” Scholz’s spokesman said after a call between US and European leaders.

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said the sanctions would target the financial and energy sectors.

Sullivan spoke to von der Leyen’s chief of staff by video call to coordinate “the details of a potential transatlantic response, including both financial sanctions and export controls,” the White House said.

“You’re Doing A Good Job” Biden All Praises For Uhuru During White House Meeting

Meeting at the White House, Biden and the Kenyan president promised to work together on climate change and ending violence on the Horn of Africa, although there appeared to be no headway on Kenya’s hopes on a trade deal.

Biden announced that the United States would immediately donate another 17 million doses of the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine to the African Union, on top of 50 million doses already sent.

“As a continent we are lagging well behind the rest of the world in terms of being able to vaccinate our people,” Kenyatta told Biden in the Oval Office.

“So any additional support like the president just mentioned is greatly welcomed and we look forward to that continued partnership,” he said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is received at the The White House in Washington DC by his American counterpart, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.

Biden has vowed a leadership role for Washington on vaccines at a time that infections remain stubbornly high in parts of the United States where people refuse widely available shots.

Most of sub-Saharan Africa has vaccination rates in the single digits, at the mercy of foreign donations due to the lack of indigenous production and prohibitive costs of mass purchases.

Kenyatta is the first African leader to visit Biden’s White House amid a slowdown of travel and summits as a Covid-19 precaution.

“I’m committed to further elevating our ties with Kenya and nations across Africa as a whole. But Kenya is the key,” Biden said.

    ‘Doing a good job’

Biden has promised a new focus on democracy after the courting of autocratic leaders by his predecessor Donald Trump — who also made no secret of his lack of interest in Africa.

Long seen as a pillar of stability, Kenya was wracked by political violence including after 2017 elections but Kenyatta has since made peace with his once-bitter rival Raila Odinga.

Kenyatta, who has vowed to fight corruption, came days after the Pandora Papers investigation which found that Kenyatta, together with six family members, owned a network of 11 offshore companies, one valued at $30 million.

Biden did not address the allegations during the brief appearance before reporters but called for “strengthening financial transparency” and praised Kenyatta’s record.

“I want to thank you for your leadership in defending the peace, security and democratic instincts of the region and your country,” Biden said. “You’re doing a good job.”

Aligned on climate, shift on trade

Kenya is the current president of the UN Security Council and in that capacity as pushed to end fighting in neighbouring Ethiopia, where hundreds of thousands of people are facing extreme hunger.

Kenya is a longstanding US security partner, working closely in another neighbor, Somalia, in combatting Al-Shabaab jihadists.

Kenyatta said he was speaking to Biden about the “fight against terrorism” but also about climate change, ahead of a high-stakes UN conference in Glasgow next month.

“Our country, our continent is the least in terms of emitting but pays the highest price,” Kenyatta said, welcoming Biden’s commitment on climate change since taking over from Trump.

Kenyatta also made a pitch on trade. The Trump administration began talks with Kenya on a free-trade deal; little progress was made but Biden has shown scant sign even of restarting talks amid a growing domestic backlash against big-ticket accords.

Trade “is vital not only in terms of further entrenching American interests on the continent but also in helping us achieve our social-economic agenda,” Kenyatta said.

President Kenyatta, who is on an official visit to the US, is the first African Head of State to be hosted by President Joe Biden since assuming office on 20th January this year.

A senior US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Biden administration would be “working closely” with Kenya on trade but acknowledged: “We are thinking through how we approach foreign trade.”

Kenya is worried as the landmark African Growth and Opportunity Act, which lets sub-Saharan nations with good governance export without duties to the vast US market, is set to expire in 2025.

What Biden And Uhuru Discussed In The White House Meeting

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday made history by becoming the first African Head of State to be hosted by President Joe Biden at the White House since the American leader took over office in January this year.

At the historic meeting, President Biden announced a US Government donation of 17 million more Covid-19 vaccines to the African Union.

“And we’re continuing our shared fight against Covid. The United States has donated 2.8 million doses of vaccine to Kenya as part of the 50 million doses we’ve donated to the African Union (AU).

“And I’m proud to announce that—today, that we’re making an additional historic one-time donation of 17 more million doses of J&J vaccine to the AU, and we’re going to be sending some more of these by the end of the year to Kenya,” President Biden said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta is received at the The White House in Washington DC by his American counterpart, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr.

President Kenyatta thanked the American Government for the continued assistance to Kenya and the African continent in the fight against Covid-19, and welcomed the additional donation of 17 million doses to the AU noting that Africa was struggling to access adequate vaccines.

“Let me also take this opportunity, through you, to thank your government and the people of the United States. During this very difficult time, the United States has done its best to step up in terms of not only helping Kenya, but the African continent in general, with regard to access to vaccines.

“I’m happy to hear your new announcement of that increase, because as many of you will know, as a continent, we are lagging well behind the rest of the world in terms of being able to vaccinate our people.

“So, any additional support, like the President (Joe Biden) has just mentioned, is greatly welcomed, and we look forward to that continued partnership,” President Kenyatta said.

Besides Covid-19, the leaders also discussed the global fight against terrorism, climate change as well as trade and investment among other subjects of mutual interest to Kenya and the US.

On the war against terrorism, President Kenyatta applauded the US for being a strong partner for Kenya.

“We’re also very closely partnering, especially in regard to the fight against terrorism globally. The United States has been a very strong partner to Kenya in that particular fight,” he said.

The Kenyan leader said his country had made tremendous progress in climate change adaptation and mitigation, and welcomed the US back to the Paris Agreement.

“We are also keenly very grateful with his strong position, especially with regard to climate change. This is an area where Kenya has made tremendous progress in her own right and where we are firmly committed to the Paris Agreement, and we’re glad to see the United States has now rejoined,” President Kenyatta said.

He said Kenya was keen on deepening its trade and investment relations with the US by investing in partnerships that promote American business interests while advancing the country’s socioeconomic transformation agenda.

“Keenly also wanting to engage, as we have been already, with the President on the issue of trade and investment between our two countries. This, I believe, is vital not only in terms of further entrenching American interests on the continent, but also in helping us also achieve our socio-economic agenda,” President Kenyatta said.

President Kenyatta, who is on an official visit to the US, is the first African Head of State to be hosted by President Joe Biden since assuming office on 20th January this year.

On his part, President Biden hailed Kenya’s steadfastness in safeguarding regional stability and advancing democracy saying the Kenya-US partnership was key in addressing global peace and security challenges.

“And, you know, the US-Kenya strategic partnership is essential—we both, I think, believe is essential to addressing key regional and global challenges.

“And I want to thank Kenya for your thank you for your leadership in defending the peace, security, and democratic instincts of the region and your country. You’re doing a heck of a job,” President Biden said.

The White House meeting was a culmination of President Kenyatta’s successful official visit of the US during which he chaired his first United Nations Security Council meeting at the UN Headquarters in New York.

President Kenyatta was accompanied to the White House by Cabinet Secretaries Raychelle Omamo (Foreign Affairs) and Betty Maina (Trade) as well as Trade PS Johnson Weru and Kenya’s Ambassador to Washington Lazarus Amayo.
