  • Sibling Rivalry? Cracks Emerge Within Linda Mwananchi

Sibling Rivalry? Cracks Emerge Within Linda Mwananchi

What began as a spirited rebellion against President William Ruto’s broad-based government experiment and ODM’s perceived drift from its founding ideals is now exposing the familiar fault lines of Kenyan opposition politics.

The Linda Mwananchi movement, which attracted large crowds to rallies in Nakuru, Kisumu, Mombasa and other towns, is increasingly grappling with an identity crisis. At the heart of the debate is a growing tension between collective resistance and individual political ambition. Despite repeated public declarations of unity, signs of strain are becoming harder to ignore.

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino moved swiftly this week to dismiss speculation about a fallout with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna. Speaking in an interview with Namlolwe FM, Owino insisted that the two leaders are pursuing different political paths. According to him, Sifuna is focused on a future presidential bid, while he is eyeing the Nairobi governorship in 2027 before eventually seeking the presidency in 2032.

“There is no conflict between us,” Owino said.

Yet the same interview revealed frustrations that have simmered beneath the surface for years. Owino recounted how he allegedly had to threaten chaos at Orange House in 2017 to secure an ODM ticket. He spoke of fighting legal battles after his election victory was nullified and claimed he received the party ticket for the 2022 elections only two days before the primaries.

He also accused Dr Oburu Oginga of failing to convene a delegates’ conference for fresh ODM elections and declared that he would never again serve under another party leader. According to Owino, Raila Odinga would be the last leader under whom he served politically.

Those are hardly the words of a politician content with a supporting role.

Owino also reminded listeners that he played a central role in organising and mobilising the massive Linda Mwananchi rally in Kisumu, a remark many interpreted as an assertion of influence within the movement at a time when Sifuna’s profile appears to be rising fastest.

A TIFA survey released in May appeared to underscore that reality. The poll showed Owino’s national support within the Linda Mwananchi camp dropping from 8 percent to 2 percent, while Sifuna registered 10 percent nationally and emerged as one of the movement’s strongest performers in Western Kenya.

The emerging tensions are not only personal. They are also strategic.

Sifuna has consistently argued that defeating an incumbent president will require a united opposition front. His willingness to engage with the emerging opposition alliance associated with Rigathi Gachagua and Kalonzo Musyoka has positioned him as a possible kingmaker or running mate in a broader coalition arrangement.

Siaya Governor James Orengo has taken a different approach. He has doubled down on the idea of reclaiming ODM from within, presenting himself as the party’s de facto leader and signalling readiness for a presidential run. For Orengo, the battle is ideological as much as it is electoral.

Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has added a generational dimension to the debate by openly describing Sifuna as the most credible presidential prospect among younger leaders. He has questioned whether veteran politicians such as Orengo can generate the level of excitement needed to mount a serious challenge against Ruto.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s longtime ally Caroli Omondi has gone even further, warning that ODM faces an ideological split between the Linda Mwananchi wing and the Oburu-aligned “Linda Ground” faction. Omondi has even referenced Raila’s dramatic departure from Ford-Kenya in 1996 as a possible blueprint should ODM abandon what he views as its founding principles.

The Registrar of Political Parties’ decision to reject attempts to register the Linda Mwananchi Party of Kenya only highlighted the movement’s uncertainty without resolving it. Although key leaders opposed the registration bid, the episode exposed the lack of consensus on the movement’s future direction.

Should Linda Mwananchi become a political party? Should it remain a pressure group? Or should it merge into a broader opposition coalition?

    Those questions remain unanswered.

Political analysts argue that the current turbulence is predictable. Many personality-driven political movements enjoy rapid growth during periods of public anger but struggle once they are forced to develop structures, define leadership hierarchies and identify candidates for elective office.

For a movement that gained momentum through public frustration over taxation, the rising cost of living and perceived opposition compromises, the internal power struggles carry significant risks.

Meanwhile, the evolving relationship between the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) and Wiper has already complicated calculations in Nairobi. Their cooperation is widely viewed as a potential obstacle to Owino’s gubernatorial ambitions, particularly with reports that some influential figures favour Embakasi North MP James Gakuya for the city’s top seat.

Every day spent managing internal rivalries and positioning for 2027 is a day the broader opposition risks failing to present a coherent alternative to Ruto’s re-election campaign.

Public denials of discord are understandable. Few within the movement would want to hand the government an early political victory by openly acknowledging divisions.

Yet polling trends, public statements and competing visions for the future tell a more complicated story.

What once appeared to be a brotherhood forged in anti-government rallies is increasingly looking like a contest over leadership, influence and political succession. The real test for Linda Mwananchi may not be whether it can mobilise crowds, but whether it can prevent personal ambitions from eclipsing its founding mission of championing ordinary citizens.

Kenyan voters have seen similar stories unfold before. The question now is whether Linda Mwananchi can rewrite the script before today’s cracks become tomorrow’s craters.

  • Orengo’s Bodyguard, Staffers Arrested Ahead of Ruto’s Siaya Visit

Orengo’s Bodyguard, Staffers Arrested Ahead of Ruto’s Siaya Visit

Police have arrested the personal bodyguard of Siaya Governor James Orengo and at least eight other members of his staff, detaining them in police stations across Nairobi and Siaya County on the eve of President William Ruto’s visit to the lakeside county.

Governor Orengo said his bodyguard was picked up in Nairobi at around 7.30pm on Saturday, March 7, and taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters.

Eight additional members of his staff, among them his communications officer, were arrested the same evening and held at various stations in Siaya County.

His personal assistant, the governor added, remains at large and is actively being sought by police, coming days after the same aide was summoned to record a statement.

Speaking to the Daily Nation by telephone, Mr Orengo said the arrests were directly connected to President Ruto’s scheduled visit to Siaya on Sunday. President Ruto was expected to attend the homecoming ceremony of Dr Ouma Oluga, the Medical Services Principal Secretary, at Uyoma in Rarieda Constituency.

“I am not sure what the government is afraid of. The President has the right to come to Siaya, but this does not give him a licence to order arbitrary arrests. The police are under strict instructions not to release them until Sunday evening, after the President’s event,” Mr Orengo said.

The governor described the conduct as an attempt to intimidate and harass his team, but vowed it would not derail what he called “our cause.” He demanded the immediate release of all those in custody, terming the arrests an egregious affront to human and constitutional rights.

“This egregious conduct on the part of the police has no place in a constitutional democracy. I demand their release. This is meant to intimidate and harass us, but it will not deter us from continuing with our cause,” he said.

The arrests also came hours before a planned Linda Mwananchi rally at Jacaranda Grounds in Nairobi, where the Orengo-led team had intended to present a parallel report on the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed by President Ruto and the late Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga. The Linda Mwananchi team had separately announced plans to travel to Kaiti Constituency in Makueni County for a fundraiser and church service on Sunday.

Mr Orengo, a first-term governor and one of the most prominent rebel voices within ODM, has been a persistent critic of the broad-based government arrangement entered into by his party and the President’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

He has also taken aim at the elevation of Oburu Odinga as the party’s acting leader, arguing that the appointment was irregular and violated the party’s own constitutional procedures.

Babu Owino also claims he is being targeted

    Babu Owino.

The arrests came as Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino also claimed on Saturday that police were moving to detain him. In a Facebook post at 6pm, Mr Owino alleged that DCI officers from Kakamega County had been dispatched for the operation, and named Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo as the complainant.

“Plans to arrest me on course. I highly welcome this nonsense. Why use DCI from Kakamega County? Raymond Omollo is the complainant,” Mr Owino wrote.

Kileleshwa MCA Robert Alai, a government ally, warned on social media that the governor risked personal arrest if he continued to antagonise the state, saying police had been right to act against those he accused of orchestrating disruptions ahead of the presidential visit. He claimed that Orengo’s aides had been paying residents in Uyoma to jeer and insult the President during the Siaya visit.

The police had not issued a statement on the arrests by the time of going to press. President Ruto arrived in Siaya on Sunday morning for the Dr Oluga homecoming event at Uyoma, one of the opposition’s traditional strongholds.

  • ‪Orengo Fires County Executive Makamu Wa Makamu After Attending Linda Ground Rally and Accusing Him of Chang’aa Addiction

‪Orengo Fires County Executive Makamu Wa Makamu After Attending Linda Ground Rally and Accusing Him of Chang’aa Addiction

KISUMU/SIAYA, February 26, 2026 — James Orengo has cracked the whip on a county officer who publicly accused him of excessive chang’aa drinking and plunged into a no-holds-barred political tirade at a rival ODM faction rally.

The County Government of Siaya has suspended Richard Omondi Odhiambo, popularly known as Makamu Wa Makamu, from his position as County Information Management Officer over what it termed unsavoury, derogatory and disrespectful remarks directed at the governor.

In a suspension letter dated February 25 and signed by Chief Officer for Governance, Administration and ICT Walter Okello, the county cited gross misconduct, insubordination and breaches of the Public Officer Ethics Act, the Public Service Disciplinary Manual and the Employment Act.

Omondi has been ordered to immediately hand over county property and explain within seven days why further disciplinary action, including dismissal, should not be taken against him.

The explosive incident unfolded on February 25 at a Linda Ground faction rally in Kisumu East’s Ragumo area.

Omondi, a vocal grassroots mobiliser who has built a reputation for his fiery Dholuo speeches, mounted the podium and launched into an attack that quickly spread across social media platforms.

In one widely circulated clip, he is heard declaring in Dholuo that what is troubling Governor Orengo is too much chang’aa. The remarks drew gasps from sections of the crowd and ignited a political storm within hours.

Witnesses and online users also pointed to other parts of his address in which he criticised senior ODM figures, including Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.

In the charged speech, he allegedly accused some leaders of marrying outside the Luo community and claimed such unions had stalled development in Luo strongholds, comments that many observers described as divisive and inflammatory.

The rally was organised by the Linda Ground faction associated with Oburu Oginga and Gladys Wanga.

The faction is positioning itself as the defender of ODM’s traditional support base ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The parallel Linda Mwananchi mobilisation, linked to Sifuna and Babu Owino and recently attended by Governor Orengo at events in western Kenya, has exposed deep cracks within the Orange party’s Nyanza bastion.

    Orengo's Brother
    Siaya Governor James Orengo

Omondi’s presence at a rival faction event while serving in the Siaya county administration was widely interpreted as a brazen act of political defiance.

Online reactions were swift and sharply divided.

Supporters of the governor praised the suspension as decisive leadership, arguing that public officers must uphold decorum and neutrality.

Critics countered that the county had long embraced Omondi’s streetwise mobilisation style and questioned why his political theatrics were tolerated until they turned against his boss.

Omondi, a trained plumber from the Kisumu Ugunja corridor who rose from the Manyatta area to become a sought-after rally speaker, previously campaigned for Orengo during past political contests.

His appointment to an ICT-related county role had in the past triggered murmurs among residents who viewed him primarily as a political mobiliser rather than a technocrat.

The suspension letter specifically references the February 25 Kisumu rally and cites violations including Section 16 of the Public Officer Ethics Act and provisions of the Public Service Human Resource Policies.

By Wednesday morning, Omondi had not issued a formal statement.

Allies on social media described the suspension as political persecution and hinted at a looming showdown that could escalate the already simmering factional rivalry.

Governor Orengo’s office had not released a separate statement by press time.

The swift disciplinary action, however, signals a zero tolerance approach to internal dissent that spills into personal attacks, particularly as ODM factions jostle for dominance in the run up to 2027.

With the seven day show cause window now ticking, the embattled officer faces a stark choice: mount a formal defence within the public service framework or transform the disciplinary process into yet another combustible political spectacle in Nyanza’s intensifying succession wars.

  • Siaya Public Service Board CEO Wilfred Nyagudi And Board On The Spot Over Health Workers Recruitment Scam Marred By Massive Bribery

Siaya Public Service Board CEO Wilfred Nyagudi And Board On The Spot Over Health Workers Recruitment Scam Marred By Massive Bribery

Over 380 dismissed health workers demand justice as investigations reveal sophisticated criminal syndicate exploiting desperate job seekers

The Siaya County Public Service Board and its Chief Executive Officer Wilfred Ouma Nyagudi are facing intense scrutiny following revelations of a massive recruitment scam that defrauded hundreds of health workers of millions of shillings in bribes while leaving critical health facilities understaffed.

The scandal, which has rocked Governor James Orengo’s administration, involves over 380 health workers who were dismissed on September 11, 2025, after working for up to eight months without pay, only to discover their appointment letters were allegedly forged.

    The Anatomy of Deception

The elaborate scheme appears to have exploited the aftermath of a legitimate December 2022 recruitment drive that attracted 21,772 applicants for just 380 advertised positions.

While the County Public Service Board (CPSB) claims to have hired only 120 legitimate workers, over 500 individuals reported for duty across various health facilities in the county.

Mary, a Community Health Assistant III whose identity we’ve protected, typifies the victims’ ordeal.

She received what appeared to be an official appointment letter on August 25, 2025, promising a basic salary of Sh26,900 with allowances totaling over Sh70,000 monthly – more than double what genuine recruits earn.

“The letter had all the official logos, reference numbers, and signatures. I borrowed money for work clothes and reported to my assigned facility where I was welcomed,” Mary recounted. “For nearly a month, I worked daily without pay, confident my arrears would come through.”

    The Criminal Network

Investigations reveal a well-coordinated criminal syndicate involving county insiders, M-Pesa agents, and individuals within security agencies who allegedly provided protection to the scam.

Victims reportedly paid between Sh250,000 and Sh500,000 for forged appointment letters and deployment postings.

One victim provided evidence of Sh350,000 in payments to Sharon Beatrice Wafula, made in three tranches over two days in August 2025.

The payments were strategically routed through M-Pesa agents to obscure the money trail.

The sophistication of the forgeries was remarkable. Documents included official-looking transfer letters that convinced colleagues of their legitimacy, and some victims even received formal acknowledgment letters from Health Administrative Officers, further legitimizing their presence in health facilities.

    Systemic Failures Exposed

The scandal has exposed critical weaknesses in Siaya’s recruitment and payroll systems.

Despite a 2022 taskforce led by former Auditor General Edward Ouko recommending reforms including requiring all hiring to go through the CPSB and receive County Executive approval, the system remained vulnerable to exploitation.

CPSB CEO Nyagudi defended the board’s role, claiming it was the board itself that uncovered the scam.

“We flagged the fake appointment letters. We can’t fire people we never hired,” he stated, distancing the board from the syndicate.

However, questions remain about how over 380 individuals could work in county health facilities for months without proper verification.

Nyagudi acknowledged using parameters including sequence of reference numbers to determine document validity, but critics question why such basic verification wasn’t conducted earlier.

    Impact on Healthcare Delivery

The mass dismissals have created a healthcare crisis in Siaya. Usenge Health Centre, recently upgraded due to apparent increased staffing, now faces potential downgrade to dispensary level.

A facility committee member warned, “We were upgraded to a health centre because of new staff. Now they’ve been sacked, and we risk going back to dispensary level.”

Health centers across sub-counties report longer queues, reduced services, and a looming crisis as facilities face sudden understaffing.

The irony is particularly stark as legitimately recruited candidates with genuine CPSB appointment letters remain undeployed more than a year later.

“We passed interviews and received signed appointment letters. But for over a year, we’ve been at home, while people with fake papers took our places,” lamented one frustrated genuine recruit.

    Ramifications

The Community Initiative Action Group Kenya (CIAG-K) has accused county officials of running a “systematic exploitation scheme” targeting jobless youth.

Director Chris Owala demanded Governor Orengo disband the CPSB, compensate victims, and prosecute those responsible.

“We are exposing a scam that victimized over 382 health workers, including nurses and clinical officers, who were fraudulently recruited after paying bribes of up to Sh500,000,” Owala declared.

The Siaya County Assembly has launched investigations, with Speaker George Okode committing the matter to the committee on General oversight.

The committee has been directed to investigate circumstances surrounding recruitment, deployment, verification, and eventual dismissal of the workers within 30 days.

Governor Orengo, responding to mounting pressure, has urged the assembly to fast-track its investigation, calling for completion within two weeks rather than a month.

“The executive will not take any action until the assembly completes its proceedings,” he stated.

    Victims’ Testimony

The human cost of the scam is devastating. Clinical officers Emily Nabwala Anyango and Felix Omondi, serving as spokespersons for the victims, described months of unpaid service while accumulating debts.

“We had been surviving on loans from individuals with the hope that once paid by the county government, we would settle the debts,” Omondi explained.

“How are we going to explain to our families or those that lent us money that has been keeping us going?”

The announcement of dismissals at the county headquarters was particularly traumatic.

Witnesses described scenes of victims fainting and collapsing as reality dawned. Some burst into tears, mourning how they would recover money allegedly paid for employment.

Social media posts, including one by Odhiambo Levin Opiyo, have provided additional insight into the scandal’s scope.

The post details allegations that county officials, including the chief health officer, county secretary, county nurse, and public service board chairman, sent “footsoldiers” to conduct recruitment for amounts as low as Sh300,000.

The post also reveals ongoing extortion, with claims that CPSB Chairman Nyakudi is demanding Sh200,000 from health workers to be added to approved lists, suggesting the corrupt network remains active.

    The Way Forward

County Secretary Joseph Ogutu has maintained that the county government bears no responsibility for those not on the official list, telling victims to “take up the matter with those they gave the bribes to, or with the relevant government authority.”

However, the scale and sophistication of the scam raise questions about institutional oversight and accountability.

The fact that fraudulent workers were seamlessly integrated into health facilities, participated in departmental activities, and even received transfers suggests systemic failures beyond individual criminal activity.

As investigations continue, the Siaya health workers recruitment scam serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of desperate job seekers to sophisticated criminal enterprises and the urgent need for robust verification systems in public service recruitment.

The outcome of ongoing investigations by the county assembly, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, and other agencies will determine whether justice is served and whether meaningful reforms prevent future exploitation of Kenya’s unemployed youth.

This story continues to develop as investigations proceed. Kenya Insights will provide updates as more information becomes available.

  • Orengo Changes Tune on Ruto Exposing ODM Influence and Political Survival

Orengo Changes Tune on Ruto Exposing ODM Influence and Political Survival

Siaya Governor James Orengo has made a surprising political shift, openly praising President William Ruto after months of sharp criticism. Just weeks ago, Orengo had accused the Kenya Kwanza administration of failing Kenyans and even demanded Ruto’s resignation.

But on August 31, at St Peter’s ACK Cathedral in Siaya, Orengo welcomed the President warmly, crediting him for development projects in the county and signaling a fresh alliance.

His remarks have stirred questions on loyalty, political survival, and Raila Odinga’s hand in the sudden change.

Orengo Tune on Ruto Surprises Many in Siaya [PHOTOS]

During the Sunday service, Orengo abandoned his combative tone and instead lauded Ruto’s leadership. The governor specifically pointed to ongoing projects such as the construction of a 20,000-seater stadium and the Siaya referral hospital.

“Your Excellency, the President, I want to allay the fears for those who think you don’t have Siaya in your heart,” Orengo told the congregation.

He revealed that Ruto had assured him of another visit to the county on October 16. The statement shocked many who still remember Orengo’s fiery attacks on the same leader in recent months.

The governor also appeared to confirm that ODM leader Raila Odinga influenced his softened tone. He admitted that Raila had personally called him and directed that Ruto be received well in Siaya.

“When Baba says right, we go right. When he says we go left, we go left,” Orengo added, showing that the shift may be less about personal conviction and more about party discipline.

Raila Factor in Orengo Tune on Ruto

Orengo’s remarks make it clear that Raila Odinga’s influence remains central in Luo Nyanza politics. By publicly admitting that his new approach came after a call from Raila, Orengo placed his loyalty firmly within the ODM hierarchy rather than individual conviction.

The governor also used the occasion to announce the upcoming Siaya International Trade and Investment Conference (SITICO 2025). He revealed that Ruto would headline the event, set to position the county as a major investment destination.

The theme of SITICO 2025, “Positioning Siaya as an Investment Destination: Transformative Growth through Trade and Investment,” mirrors the county’s development plan for 2023–2027.

With Raila signaling cooperation and Orengo aligning with Ruto, the conference could be the biggest test of whether political rhetoric will translate into genuine development partnerships.

From Demanding Resignation to Praising Leadership

Orengo’s shift is striking because of his previous position. In July, while addressing residents in Bondo, he declared that Ruto had failed Kenyans and should resign. He accused the government of driving up public anger through poor policies and worsening economic conditions.

At the time, Orengo’s speech echoed the opposition’s nationwide protests against the Kenya Kwanza administration. His message then was that the country could only move forward if Ruto stepped down.

Now, two months later, the same governor is openly praising Ruto’s government for delivering development to Siaya. The sharp contrast has raised eyebrows, with critics calling it political hypocrisy while supporters view it as a pragmatic move.

The public remains divided. Some argue that Siaya stands to benefit from aligning with the government of the day. Others believe that Orengo’s change in tone undermines his credibility and exposes the transactional nature of Kenyan politics.

    Conclusion

James Orengo’s sudden praise for President Ruto after months of hostility underscores the fragile nature of Kenyan politics. His admission that Raila Odinga directed the shift highlights the ODM leader’s grip over Luo Nyanza.

For Siaya residents, the test will not be in the words but in whether the promised stadium, hospital, and investment opportunities materialize. Until then, Orengo’s U-turn will remain one of the boldest political recalculations in recent months.

  • EATING ITS OWN PEOPLE: Security Laws Pushed By Mt Kenya Leaders During Uhuru’s Time Now Haunts Them

EATING ITS OWN PEOPLE: Security Laws Pushed By Mt Kenya Leaders During Uhuru’s Time Now Haunts Them

How the chickens have come home to roost for Kenya’s political elite

NAIROBI – In a bitter twist of political irony, the controversial security laws that Mount Kenya leaders bulldozed through Parliament during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration have now turned their fangs on the very architects who created them.

The Security Laws Amendment Act, which sailed through the National Assembly despite fierce resistance from the then-opposition CORD coalition, has metamorphosed into a weapon of mass political destruction – one that no longer discriminates between friend and foe.

    Genesis of a monster

Cast your mind back to 2014.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto, buoyed by their parliamentary majority, steamrolled amendments to security laws that opposition leaders warned would eviscerate constitutional freedoms.

The Mount Kenya political establishment, drunk on power and convinced of their invincibility, dismissed these warnings as the desperate cries of a defeated opposition.

James Orengo, then Siaya Senator and CORD’s chief legal eagle, stood before the High Court arguing that these amendments violated the Bill of Rights.

His warnings about threats to freedom of expression, media freedom, fair trial rights, and privacy protections fell on deaf ears among the ruling elite.

“Sometimes governments eat their own people,” Orengo prophetically declared during heated Senate debates. “In another one year, you will be crying in my office to come and represent you.”

How prescient those words now seem.

    Boomerang effect

Today, as Kenya writhes under a wave of state-sponsored killings, mysterious abductions, and systematic human rights violations, the security apparatus has shed all pretense of restraint.

The tools that were supposedly designed to combat terrorism have been repurposed into instruments of political persecution.

The recent charging of human rights activist Boniface Mwangi with terrorism-related offenses over his alleged role in anti-government protests epitomizes this transformation.

Police claimed to have recovered an unused teargas canister and blank firearm rounds from his home – evidence so flimsy it borders on the absurd.

Yet under the security laws that Mount Kenya leaders championed, such threadbare evidence can now sustain terrorism charges.

    A harvest of tears

The statistics paint a chilling picture of how far the state has fallen.

At least 777 people were arrested during the recent Saba Saba protests, facing charges ranging from terrorism to burglary.

Young political activists like Peter Kinyanjui and Serah Thiga now find themselves branded as terrorists for daring to exercise their constitutional right to protest.

Former Chief Justice David Maraga, watching this grotesque theater unfold, condemned the terrorism charges as naked state overreach.

“A terrorist offence is a serious offence,” he observed. “Charging someone with terrorism just to deny them bond, traumatise them and keep them in custody… We are not going to allow this to continue.”

    The reckoning

The cruel irony is not lost on close observers of Kenyan politics.

The very Mount Kenya leaders who dismissed constitutional concerns while expanding state security powers now find themselves and their political allies subject to the mechanisms they championed.

Former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, who presided over these amendments, now condemns what he calls the “political weaponisation” of security laws against citizens who dare criticize the government.

Governor James Orengo, vindicated in his earlier opposition, called the terrorism charges against protesters “ridiculous.”

His earlier warning that “revolutions eat their own children” has proven hauntingly accurate.

    The bitter truth

What we are witnessing is not merely the abuse of power – it is the logical conclusion of a flawed premise.

When political leaders prioritize expediency over constitutional principles, when they choose short-term advantage over long-term institutional health, they invariably create monsters that eventually turn on their creators.

The Mount Kenya political establishment’s cavalier attitude toward constitutional safeguards during their ascendancy has now created a Frankenstein that threatens to devour them.

The security laws they pushed through with such confidence have become a sword of Damocles hanging over their own heads.

    Lessons unlearned

As Kenya grapples with this self-inflicted wound, one cannot help but wonder whether our political leaders will finally grasp the fundamental truth that constitutional rights exist not to protect the guilty, but to restrain the powerful.

The security laws saga serves as a stark reminder that in politics, as in physics, every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

Those who sow the wind of authoritarian overreach will inevitably reap the whirlwind of political persecution.

The question now is whether Kenya’s political class has the wisdom to step back from this precipice, or whether they will continue their descent into the abyss of their own making.

As Orengo warned all those years ago: “When power gets into your head, you will never remember that one day there is a bigger power… that will deal with you.”

That day of reckoning appears to have arrived.

  • Concerns and Speculations Over Orengo’s Extended Absence From Office and Prolonged Stay Abroad

Concerns and Speculations Over Orengo’s Extended Absence From Office and Prolonged Stay Abroad

Siaya County plunged into uncertainty as Governor’s prolonged absence fuels leadership vacuum and internal power struggles

SIAYA COUNTY – A deepening governance crisis has engulfed Siaya County as Governor James Orengo’s unexplained absence from office stretches beyond three weeks, sparking widespread concerns about leadership vacuum and administrative paralysis.

The county’s top official has been conspicuously absent from public duties since June 23, when he last appeared before the Senate’s Public Accounts Committee to address audit queries.

Sources within the county administration confirm that Orengo is currently out of the country on what has been described as a “private trip,” though no official communication has been issued regarding the duration or nature of his travels.

The governor’s absence has created an unprecedented situation where County Assembly Speaker George Okode has assumed ceremonial duties typically reserved for the county’s chief executive.

This unusual arrangement has raised constitutional questions about the proper delegation of executive powers during a governor’s absence.

“Siaya today is on autopilot. The governor is away and has not handed over to his deputy to act in his absence, so no one knows what is going on in Siaya,” Deputy Governor William Oduol told reporters, painting a picture of administrative dysfunction.

The situation has become more complex due to the ongoing fallout between Orengo and his deputy.

Despite surviving a turbulent impeachment attempt and being cleared by the Senate, Oduol claims he has been systematically sidelined from county operations.

Oduol’s revelations expose the depth of the internal crisis.

He alleges that his office has been “completely disabled,” with staff instructed not to communicate with him or accept his directives.

The deputy governor claims he has been excluded from cabinet meetings, had his benefits and allowances withdrawn, and even resorts to fueling the official county vehicle from his personal funds.

“Any effort to perform my official duties is futile, as the governor has issued firm instructions that no one should deal with me,” Oduol stated, suggesting a complete breakdown in the county’s executive structure.

The governance crisis has cascaded through various levels of county administration.

Both the County Executive Committee Member for Finance and the Chief Officer for Finance are currently serving in acting capacities without clear supervision from either the governor or his deputy.

This administrative limbo has raised concerns about the county’s ability to make crucial financial decisions and implement development projects.

The situation becomes more troubling considering that Siaya County handles millions of shillings in public resources and oversees critical services for its residents.

Orengo is seen with Ruto at State House, Nairobi when he led a delegation of Siaya leadership meet the president for development discussions on June 5.

Speaker George Okode has attempted to downplay the crisis, confirming that while the governor is physically out of the country, he remains “not out of duty.” Okode dismissed concerns about service delivery disruption, terming the issues as “politically instigated.”

“No law has been breached and there is no cause for alarm over the governor’s short physical absence,” Okode assured, though he acknowledged that it would constitute a legal breach if he, as speaker, were to chair a cabinet meeting.

The speaker explained that Orengo has been nominating different individuals, including MCAs and executive members, to represent him at various functions.

However, this ad hoc arrangement has raised questions about continuity and accountability in county governance.

The governor’s absence has been particularly noticeable during significant county events.

He missed the ceremony for the translation of Canon Ida Odinga at St Peter’s ACK Church, Nyamira, and was represented at a nuclear power stakeholders’ engagement at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology in Bondo.

His last public appearance was on June 5, when he led a delegation of Siaya leaders to State House to discuss development projects.

The contrast between his active engagement then and current absence has fueled speculation about underlying issues.

The crisis has broader political implications, particularly given Orengo’s stature as a veteran politician and former senator.

The situation has vindicated some of Deputy Governor Oduol’s earlier warnings about governance challenges in the county.

“All the MPs are now raising the same issues I raised in 2022. I have been vindicated,” Oduol stated, suggesting that the current crisis was foreseeable.

Legal experts are beginning to question whether the current arrangement complies with constitutional requirements for county governance.

The prolonged absence of a governor without formal handover to the deputy raises questions about the continuity of executive authority and accountability to the electorate.

Siaya Leaders’ State House Meeting Cancelled Over Plans To Exclude Governor Orengo

A high-level meeting between President William Ruto and political leaders from Siaya County scheduled for Wednesday has been abruptly cancelled amid allegations of attempts to sideline Governor James Orengo.

The State House meeting, which was aimed at discussing development priorities for Siaya County, was postponed indefinitely on Tuesday, just a day before it was set to take place.

Multiple sources familiar with the situation indicate that tensions arose after reports emerged that certain leaders had planned to exclude Governor Orengo from the crucial talks.

The governor, known for his critical stance toward the Kenya Kwanza administration, has reportedly faced growing isolation attempts despite being the county’s top elected official.

“We were informed of the postponement on Tuesday,” confirmed Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda, who was among those expected to attend the meeting. MP Ochanda denied claims that a preparatory meeting held on Sunday was intended to exclude Orengo, stating that “the governor was out of the country at the time.”

The Sunday preparatory session, convened by Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi with several Siaya MPs in attendance, had focused on establishing agenda priorities ahead of the State House engagement.

Wandayi hosting former Siaya gubernatorial candidate Nicolas Gumbo recently in his office.
Wandayi hosting former Siaya gubernatorial candidate Nicolas Gumbo recently in his office.

“What we were doing on Sunday was to firm up some of the projects we wanted the national government to prioritise. We wanted to be clear on what to present to the President,” Ochanda explained.

The cancellation highlights the growing political divide in Siaya following the recent partnership between Raila Odinga’s ODM party and President Ruto’s administration.

Governor Orengo has maintained his position as a vocal critic of the Kenya Kwanza government, consistently calling for greater accountability.

In a significant development that underscores the widening rift, Governor Orengo recently sent a formal letter to President Ruto requesting a separate meeting to discuss county matters.

“The purpose of the meeting is to engage you on key development matters affecting Siaya County and to explore collaborative pathways through which the national government and the county government can work together,” Orengo stated in his letter.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has publicly defended Orengo at least twice in April against attempts to undermine his leadership position within the county.

As political tensions continue to simmer in Siaya, it remains unclear when or if the State House meeting will be rescheduled, and whether all elected leaders from the region will be included in future discussions.

‘You Cannot Alter History and Erase Him’ – Martha Karua Defends Raila, Hails His Key Role in Second Liberation

People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has defended former Prime Minister Raila Odinga against accusations from some Kenyans that he did not play a significant role in the country’s push for multipartyism.

Although they may have political differences, Karua asserts that Odinga’s contributions are well-documented.

“Even though we differ politically truth be said Raila Odinga was an integral part of the 2nd liberation alongside James Orengo and others,” she stated.

Karua believes that Raila’s critics should acknowledge this part of history and recognize the sacrifices he has made along the way.

“We cannot change history he was detained, jailed and like James Orengo forced to flee Kenya for a while,” she explained.

The PLP leader, who was Raila’s running mate in the 2022 Presidential Elections, emphasized that democracy involves having divergent views and sometimes agreeing to disagree on issues.

She stated that Raila has played his role and urged others to contribute as well to improve Kenya.

“Any one of us has a role to make Kenya a better place for ourselves and generations to come so let each do their bit,” she stated.

Social media has been awash with reports that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his long-term ally, Siaya Governor James Orengo, were not reading from the same page.

The claims were exacerbated after professionals from the Luo community threatened to sponsor an impeachment motion against Orengo for criticising the broad-based government.

The discussion regarding the said fallout extended to Saturday, April 19, 2025, with Kenyans on various social media platforms wading into the debate.

Karua was forced to add her voice to the matter after some social media users claimed Raila did not fight for the country’s liberation.

    Threats on Orengo

Orengo has dominated headlines in recent times after he called out senior politicians over what he termed as psychophancy to the government.

His sentiments did not augur well with Luo professionals who claimed that he was sabotaging the newly found bromance between Raila and President William Ruto.

Nyanza professionals organisation dubbed Ramogi Professional Caucus reiterated that the community (Luo) is united behind the Ruto-Raila pact for development.

“We want to tell Siaya Governor James Orengo that we are not happy with his remarks at Oduor’s burial on Saturday. As a community, we are united and fully support the broad-based government. This is the only way we can ensure we develop economically. We cannot be in opposition forever,” Joshua Nyamori, RPC Chairman, says.

“If he continues like this, we will even impeach him,” Polycarp Ochilo, a member, added.

    Raila’s Say

Meanwhile, ODM party leader Raila Odinga has urged members to engage in discussions about the future of the party without resorting to personal attacks.

In his appeal, Raila called on ODM leaders to demonstrate “decorum, civility, restraint, and respect for one another” as they deliberate on the party’s current state and future direction.

His call comes in response to apparent divisions arising from the party’s decision to unite and collaborate with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance.

However, he downplayed claims that the ongoing discussions threaten the future of ODM.

“Mr. Odinga believes the discussions are not unique to ODM and are in line with similar such engagements that have gone on in equally strong parties in established democracies,” stated Dennis Onyango, Raila Odinga’s spokesperson.

Onyango confirmed that the former Prime Minister is closely monitoring the ongoing discussions regarding the party’s relationship with the Kenya Kwanza administration. “He is also paying keen attention to the various interpretations of the Memorandum of Understanding with the United Democratic Alliance,” he added.

Orengo: High Court Ruling Nullifies 2022 Election Results, Azimio Should Take Rightful Place As Majority in Parliament

Members of Parliament affiliated with the Azimio coalition have been called upon to assert their rightful place in the National Assembly following a recent court ruling in their favor as the majority coalition.

This comes after a High Court decision on February 7, 2025, overturned National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula’s October 6, 2022, declaration that President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition held the majority in parliament.

Siaya Governor James Orengo urged Azimio MPs (especially those from the ODM party) to act and reclaim their rightful position in parliament.

“I want to remind my party, ODM, that this court decision must not be ignored. Azimio has been declared the majority—do not let this slip away. Instead of sitting at the table with those in power, take what rightfully belongs to you,” Orengo asserted.

Speaking during the burial of Richard Ochieng’ Oloo, father to popular lawyer Willis Otieno, he welcomed the ruling, arguing that it further casts doubt on the legitimacy of the 2022 presidential election results.

“What the High Court has affirmed is proof that the election results announced in 2022 were not accurate. How could Raila’s party and coalition secure the majority of parliamentary seats yet lose the presidency? This ruling confirms the inconsistencies,” Orengo stated on Saturday.

The veteran ODM politician cautioned Azimio leaders against negotiating with Kenya Kwanza over the matter, insisting that they must stand firm and claim their majority status.

This comes even Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has convened a Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting for Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya on Wednesday next week.

“I spoke to Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta. We want an Azimio PG so that we can plan. The situation is that Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya is the majority party,” he stated.

“On Wednesday, we want a Parliamentary Group meeting after you have met on Tuesday so that we can organize ourselves,” Musyoka said while addressing mourners at a funeral in Kitui.

The former Vice President opined that the decision served as a lesson for former Azimio politicians who defected to Kenya Kwanza, questioning their faith and belief in the coalition.

“Those who were praising Ruto, I know you are feeling awkward; you could have been patient and waited. These friends who ran to join Ruto, I suggest they do some introspection,” he remarked.

Orengo Sounds Warning To ODM Members In Govt Against Turning Into Ruto’s Sycophants

Siaya County Governor James Orengo has urged leaders in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to uphold the party’s core identity and values.

Orengo made the remarks during the funeral of Roseline Odede, the chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), held in Uyoma, Rarieda Sub-County, on Saturday, January 18, 2025.

Orengo cautioned ODM members against following President William Ruto blindly without questioning the errors in his administration urging them to be on the right side of history.

“The law can never be suspended, you must always live by the dictates of the Constitution. When (Adolf) Hitler formed the government, it was a coalition and that coalition died so I pray that ODM to withstand any storm,” he said.

“Even if you make compromises, you must do so on principle. Don’t be part of praise and worship, we must stand firm.”

The governor raised concerns about the surge in abduction cases these past months; calling on the government to put an end to the menace.

“Kenya is crying that we must stop abductions, and extrajudicial killings so that we can be a republic. When there is too much sycophancy in government, people lose sight of their fundamentals.”

Orengo emphasized the need for ODM leaders to prioritize principles over convenience, warning of future repercussions if they compromised the party’s values.

He referenced the late Roseline Odede’s courage in standing against human rights abuses, including abductions and extrajudicial killings.

“We (ODM) have an identity. If you lose that identity for easy victories, we are going to pay for it in the future. If you must make compromises, you must make compromises on matters of principle. Do not be part of praise and worship,” he stated.

    Adding;

“I want my conscience to be clear. When there were abductions, I said no to that. I am saying this because Roseline, this December, not three years ago, told the government to stop abductions and stop extrajudicial killings. And when she did that, they took away the money for the commission, and workers could not be paid. That is why I am saying, when there is too much sycophancy, people lose sight of their fundamentals.”

    Sifuna reprimands ODM leaders

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna also used the platform to express his dissatisfaction with a section of ODM leaders who he said were more focused on aligning with President William Ruto’s government than addressing the plight of ordinary Kenyans. Sifuna lamented that such actions have hindered efforts to hold the government accountable.

“We must stop being sycophants. If something is wrong, it is wrong. I will not participate in the activities of my fellow ODM members who are enjoying the fruits of being in Ruto’s government and are stifling my efforts to call out the government,” he said.

Sifuna reiterated the need to uphold the party’s foundational principles, as envisioned by ODM leader Raila Odinga.

He disclosed that Odinga had tasked him with preserving ODM’s identity as a symbol of hope for Kenyans, regardless of the outcome of Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship.

“When you decided to run for the AUC, you told me as the Secretary General of ODM that we must retain the identity of our political party as a beacon of hope for Kenyans. This is what I aspire to do, whether you succeed or not,” Sifuna asserted.

  • Gachagua Impeached As Kenya’s Deputy President

Gachagua Impeached As Kenya’s Deputy President

Senators have voted to impeach the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Thursday evening after approving five of the 11 charges levelled against him in the historic impeachment motion.

Before undertaking the vote, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi directed senators to vote on all 11 charges, noting that the threshold to move the motion needed 45 senators to vote in favor for the charge.

“Honerable senators, these are the guidelines on how we are going to move forward: All Senators are eligible to cast their votes, the threshold is 45 senators and we are going to vote for the charges separately. So we are going to vote 11 times.” Senate Speaker directed.

The development coming after 281 Members of the National Assembly voted to impeach the Deputy President following a motion tabled by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse.

The motion by Mutuse laid 11 grounds for DP Gachagua’s ouster ranging from gross violations of the constitution and other laws such as the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, the Proceeds of Crime and Anti-Money Laundering Act, the Leadership and Integrity Act and the National Cohesion and Integration Act.

DP Gachagua was expected to appear before Senate as a witness for cross examination but was taken ill, Thursday afternoon.

He is currently undergoing treatment at Karen Hospital, where he is reported to be suffering from intense chest pains.

Senior Counsel Paul Muite urged the Senate to postpone the proceedings until Tuesday, citing Gachagua’s health condition and the need for the Deputy President to physically present his defense.

However, Senate resolved to continue with the impeachment proceedings against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua despite his lawyer’s request for an adjournment to allow him time to recover and appear in person.

The Speaker of the Senate Amason Kingi ruled that the adjournment request must be decided by the Senate and not unilaterally by the Speaker calling upon the Majority Leader to move a motion to adjourn to Saturday, October 19.

Lawyers representing the National Assembly opposed the adjournment, insisting that the trial should proceed in accordance with Senate rules, even in the absence of the Deputy President.

They argued that Gachagua had the option of being represented or submitting documents, as permitted by Senate standing orders.

The motion to adjourn was, however, defeated after a majority of senators declined to support it.

Speaker Kingi emphasised the Senate’s obligation to adhere to constitutional timelines, pointing out that the impeachment process must be concluded within 10 days.

“The Senate has a greater duty to comply with the Constitution and stick to the strict timeline of 10 days,” Kingi stated.

However, the Deputy President’s legal team walked out in protest after the Senate rejected the motion to adjourn to Saturday.

“We shall be perpetuating an illegality if we were to sit in parliament without instructions from our client,” said Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru.

    Charges Against Gachagua

The 11 charges facing Gachagua range from allegations of financial misconduct to accusations of ethnic divisiveness.

The impeachment motion accuses him of undermining President William Ruto’s government and engaging in corrupt activities, including using proxies to amass significant wealth and state property.

In addition, Gachagua has been accused of fostering division by engaging in politics that exploits ethnic tensions, a serious charge in Kenya’s delicate political landscape.

One of the most damning accusations is that Gachagua manipulated his ailing brother, Nderitu Gachagua, into signing a will from his sickbed to acquire family assets, including a hotel.

Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, who sponsored the impeachment motion, argued that Gachagua’s conduct amounted to “extraordinary wrongdoing” and warranted immediate removal from office.

Mutuse also claimed that Gachagua had amassed wealth estimated at Ksh 5.2 billion through corrupt dealings, using his influence to award lucrative government tenders to family members and friends.

However, Gachagua has dismissed all the accusations as false, calling the charges “ridiculous and embarrassing.”

List Of Lawyers In Gachagua’s Impeachment Trial In The Senate Led By Senior Counsel Orengo And Paul Muite

Siaya Governor James Orengo is spearheading the legal team representing the National Assembly in the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Orengo’s legal team includes prominent lawyers Paul Nyamodi, Eric Gumbo, Moses Kipkogei, Muthomi Thiankolu, Peter Wanyama, Melly Kennedy Kipkoech, and Joan Jeruto.

Other members of the legal team are Muriuki Eric Mwirigi, Mwereru Boniface Mawira, Ondago Kevine Otieno, Alex Mbaya, Kennedy Kyalo, and John Mwangi Kang’u.

The designated Members of Parliament attending the proceedings include Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, George Murugara, Samuel Chepkong’a, John Makali, and Zamzam Mohammed.

The witnesses for the National Assembly are Kibwezi West MP Eckomas Mwengi Mutuse, former KEMSA CEO Andrew Mulwa, Secretary to the Cabinet Mercy Wanjau, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, and businessman Peterson Njomo Muchira.

On the defense side, Gachagua’s legal team is led by Senior Counsel Paul Muite, alongside Elisha Ongoya, Ndegwa Njiru, Faith Waigwa, Amos Kisilu, Tom Macharia, Swanya Victor Ogeto, John Njomo, George Wandati, George Sakimpa, Andrew Muge, Eric Naibei, Juliah Omwamba, and Willis Echesa.

Gachagua is the sole witness for his defense.

However, Gachagua’s legal team has raised an objection to Governor Orengo’s participation in the proceedings, citing a conflict of interest due to his position as a serving state officer.

Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru argued that Orengo was a state officer serving as a first term governor and past decisions made by the house have squashed attempts of public officers to represent clients in the house due to conflict of interest.

“Governor James Orengo is a full-time serving state officer as per Article 260 of the constitution which bars a full-time state officer from engaging in meaningful employment. It would be prejudicial for this house to allow Orengo to represent National Assembly in these proceedings,” he said.

Njiru cited Kisii Deputy Governor Robert Monda case where Senate Speaker Amason Kingi allowed the preliminary objection raised by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei to disallow National Assembly Majority Whip Sylvanus Osoro from representing the Deputy Governor.

“Just recently this house which is a house of record during the impeachment of the Kisii Deputy Governor, the county assembly attempted to appear by legal counsel Sylvanus Osoro (South Mugirango MP) which was raised by Senator Cherargei which was sustained,” he said.

Gachagua’s counsel also buttressed his objection based on a High Court ruling by Justice Ogolla barring Governor James Orengo from representing Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director Daniel Manduku.

“A person engaged in direct employment cannot purport to appear and represent a party before this assembly. It will raise serious conflict of interest, the same will prejudice our client and also in violation of key provisions of the law,” Njiru remarked.

Gachagua Lawyers Want Governor Orengo Barred From Representing NA

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s legal team has objected to senior counsel James Orengo (Siaya Governor) representing the National Assembly.

Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru in his preliminary objection argued that Orengo who is National Assembly lead counsel should be barred on grounds that he is a state officer.

“James Orengo is a full-time serving state officer and is barred from engaging in employment. It would be prejudicial to our client if this house were to allow James Orengo to represent the National Assembly in these proceedings” Ndegwa said.

    Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru.

He further cited similar objections which have been upheld in the past on account of conflict of interest, a case in point being the 2021 high court ruling where Orengo who was the Siaya Senator at the time was barred from representing former Kenya Ports Authority managing director Dr Daniel Manduku facing graft charges.

He also referred to Article 260 of the constitution which bars a full-time state officer from engaging in gainful employment. The Lawyer also objected to the introduction of any new evidence against his client.

Responding to the objection, lawyer Eric Gumbo challenged the defence team to table evidence supporting the claims.

“The Constitution of Kenya article 77 is the primary law that then speaks to the restrictions on activities of state officers. There has been no assertion that learned Senior Counsel James Orengo by representing a party before this house has participated in gainful employment. In any case, what evidence has been tendered before this House to speak to that fact? he posed.

Meanwhile, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has pleaded not guilty to the 11 charges levelled against him.

The National Assembly has been allocated a maximum of three hours for presentation of the case and re-examination while the Deputy President will have 2 hours for cross-examination of witnesses.

Thereafter, Senators will be given an opportunity to ask questions or seek clarification from the National Assembly.

    Thursday sitting

The DP is scheduled to present his case before the Senate and will have a maximum of three hours for both presentation and re-examination whereas the NA will have two hours for cross-examination of witnesses.

Senators will once again be given an opportunity, following which closing statements by the parties will be made for a period of not exceeding one hour each.

The Senate shall thereafter proceed to debate a special motion before voting on each of the charges.

The Senate has been adjourned until 2.30 pm when the proceedings on the proposed removal from office of Deputy President by impeachment will continue.

Speaker Amason Kingi is expected to rule on the preliminary objections by the Deputy President’s counsels and also on businessman Peterson Njomo Muchira affidavit claiming to have key evidence regarding the ongoing impeachment motion.

Devastating Blow for Orengo as Raila Appoints Nyong’o ODM Leader

Raila Odinga’s recent appointment of Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang Nyong’o as interim ODM leader has sent shockwaves through the party, marking a significant setback for Siaya Governor James Orengo.

Despite Orengo’s substantial campaign efforts, insiders suggest a political plot involving former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua aimed at destabilizing ODM.

As tensions rise within the party, Orengo’s recent criticisms of Ruto’s administration highlight the deeper divisions.

This article explores the implications of Nyong’o’s appointment and Orengo’s responses amid ongoing political turmoil in Kenya.

Raila’s Shocking Move: Orengo’s Ambitions Crushed as Nyong’o Takes ODM Leadership

Raila Odinga’s decision to appoint Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang Nyong’o as interim ODM leader is a significant setback for Siaya Governor James Orengo. Orengo has spent millions campaigning for this influential position.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua reportedly wanted Orengo to take over ODM leadership while Raila focuses on his AU Commission chairmanship bid.

Insiders claim this is part of a strategy to undermine the collaboration between President William Ruto and Raila Odinga. Gachagua aims to sway ODM decisions in his favor as he prepares for the 2027 presidential elections.

Orengo, known for his frugality, has surprised many with his recent generosity. He has spent heavily on key ODM members and cartels that promised him the leadership role now held by Nyong’o.

Raila and Orengo have a complicated history, dating back to the death of Raila’s father, founding Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.

Just a month ago, Orengo harshly criticized the idea of ODM joining Ruto’s administration, calling it an “abomination” and “disaster.”

Amid growing divisions in ODM, Raila’s proposals for national dialogue with the Kenya Kwanza administration have raised concerns.

Orengo stressed the importance of justice for families affected by recent protests, stating that their needs should take precedence over political ambitions. “We must address injustices now, not tomorrow,” he asserted.

Orengo’s Outrage At Scrambe for Positions

Speaking during the burial of Kevin Onyango, a victim of the anti-government protests, Orengo expressed outrage at the scramble for positions while the community mourns. “We cannot prioritize politics over the loss of our children,” he emphasized.

He urged Kenyans to listen to grieving families and ensure justice for the deceased. “How can we join the government when justice has not been served?” he questioned.

Orengo warned against joining the Kenya Kwanza administration, labeling it a “disaster.” He rejected claims that Ruto’s departure would cause a constitutional crisis and reaffirmed his support for Raila.

Recently, Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga warned that calls for Ruto’s resignation could lead to unconstitutional changes and political instability in the country.

  • Why John Mbadi is Desperate to Become a CS in Ruto’s Shaky Government

Why John Mbadi is Desperate to Become a CS in Ruto’s Shaky Government

John Mbadi, a seasoned politician and key figure in the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), is determined to secure a Cabinet Secretary (CS) position in President William Ruto’s unstable government.
His ambitions have stirred controversy and raised questions about his motivations. Mbadi’s actions and statements show a strong desire to leverage the new alliance between Ruto and Opposition leader Raila Odinga to achieve his political goals.
This move has put him at odds with several top ODM leaders, further intensifying internal party tensions.

Here, we delve into why John Mbadi is desperate to secure a CS position in a government that many consider unstable.

John Mbadi Supporting the Ruto-Raila Alliance

Mbadi has thrown his weight behind the unexpected friendship between Ruto and Raila. He believes this alliance is his best chance to finally become a CS, a position he has coveted for years.

This support has put him at odds with several top ODM leaders, who view the alliance with suspicion.

    Clashing with ODM Leaders

Siaya Governor James Orengo has been one of the most vocal opponents of ODM and Raila Odinga joining Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza (KK) administration.

Orengo and other critics argue that this move is a blatant attempt to secure cabinet positions and exploit government resources.

Mbadi, however, has fired back, insisting that the alliance is essential for ODM’s influence and his personal political future.

    The Allure of Cabinet Positions

Azimio, the coalition where ODM is the largest party, has been awarded seven Cabinet slots in Ruto’s government.

ODM is scrambling to secure the majority of these positions, and Mbadi is fiercely vying to be one of the beneficiaries.

This pursuit is not just about personal ambition but also about ensuring ODM’s strategic foothold within the government.

    Dismissing Opponents

Mbadi has not hesitated to dismiss the objections of prominent figures like former President Uhuru Kenyatta and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Both leaders are against Azimio sanitizing Ruto’s tainted government. Mbadi’s rebuttals underscore his commitment to the Ruto-Raila alliance and his belief that this partnership is the key to his ministerial dreams.

“I am not persuaded that Uhuru means well for us now. If he wanted to give us leadership, he would have given us leadership in 2022. Some of us today would be Cabinet ministers; I would not be a nominated member of Parliament,” Mbadi said.

    Broken Promises and Renewed Ambitions

In 2022, Mbadi shelved his gubernatorial ambitions after Raila Odinga promised him a CS position. However, Raila’s loss to Ruto in the presidential election dashed those hopes.

Now, with Ruto’s government extending an olive branch to the opposition, Mbadi sees a new opportunity to realize his long-held dream.

His name is among those floated by Raila for the CS positions, alongside former Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya and former Mombasa governor Hassan Joho.

    The Gen Z Factor

Mbadi’s ambitions are unfolding amid a political impasse caused by Generation Z protestors demanding accountability and growth from Ruto’s government.

These young Kenyans are frustrated with the administration’s performance and are pushing for meaningful change.

Ruto, in response, is adopting a political approach to address economic problems by creating a broader government of national unity that includes opposition parties. This strategy aims to quell the protests and restore stability.

    Orengo’s Opposition

James Orengo argues that joining Ruto’s government betrays the push for accountable governance that Gen Z protestors have initiated.

He believes that aligning with a government perceived as corrupt undermines the very principles the youth are fighting for.

Mbadi, however, views this as a pragmatic move to ensure ODM’s influence and his political advancement.

    The Broader Implications

Mbadi’s desperation to become a CS highlights the fluid and often unstable nature of Kenyan politics. His actions reflect the internal divisions within ODM and the broader opposition coalition.

The scramble for cabinet positions has exposed rifts that could weaken the opposition’s ability to present a united front against Ruto’s government.

    Conclusion

John Mbadi’s bid to become a Cabinet Secretary in Ruto’s shaky government is a microcosm of the larger political struggles facing Kenya.

His support for the Ruto-Raila alliance, despite internal opposition and public criticism, underscores his determination to achieve his political goals.

As Mbadi navigates these turbulent waters, his actions will have significant implications for his career, his party, and the future of Kenyan politics.

The political landscape in Kenya remains dynamic and unpredictable. Mbadi’s quest for a CS position is just one of many factors that will shape the country’s future.

Whether his gamble pays off or leads to further division within ODM and the broader opposition, only time will tell.

For now, John Mbadi remains a key player in the unfolding drama of Kenyan politics, driven by ambition and the hope of securing a place at the top.

  • Why Raila Skipped Gen Ogolla’s Burial In Siaya

Why Raila Skipped Gen Ogolla’s Burial In Siaya

Raila Odinga’s absence at the burial ceremony of CDF General Francis Ogolla at his home did not only catch everyone by surprise but also sparked a wave of speculations.

Raila, who comes from Nyanza region, just like Ogolla, was a relative as revealed by Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga during the burial. Raila’s mother hailed from Alego, same as Ogolla, making the General his ‘uncle’.

Raila being the defacto leader of the Luo, was expected to headline the funeral which was also attended by President William Ruto.

Mr. Odinga was however seen attending a football match between local teams in Nairobi. His brother Oburu Odinga who represented him in the ceremony said the former prime minister was disposed to attend.

However, sources speaking to Kenya Insights allude to a strategic scheme by Odinga to avert a possible fallout and generally to preserve his image as a candidate for the up coming African Union election.

Odinga is also keen not to fracture his newly formed relationship with Ruto, “Raila is keen not to antagonise Ruto due to his bid for the AU seat. He didn’t want to be forced into pushing the theory of an assassination of Gen. Ogolla in front of Ruto.” The source said.

From the inception of the crash, majority of Azimio leaders have subtly advanced their view that there was a foul play in the fatal accident.

We learn from our insider source that Raila’s absence was an internal agreement in Azimio. “They knew that if Raila attends, then the organizers will give him a chance to address mourners, hence blocking the other Azimio luminaries. So, the agreement was that Kalonzo or Martha Karua was to be chosen to speak on behalf of Azimio. This is the reason why Kalonzo broke the protocol to invite Martha, and he was forced to come and recognize the presence of Wajackoyah and Mwangi wa Iria after the duo complained that Kalonzo ignored them.”

Also as part of their strategy, Dr. Oburu and Alego Usonga MP Sam Atandi tried so hard to push the assassination theory, and even it is said they have tried to push the family to demand an investigation, and the family has refused to play along.

Oburu in his speech said the Luo community has in the past lost high-ranking leaders under unclear circumstances hence need to probe for the truth.

“Even though it was an accident; in this region we’ve had many such accidents and we’ve also had assassinations of leaders from this region. So when such things happen we are a bit suspicious not because of anything, but we want to know the truth,” Oburu said.

Oburu differed sharply with Joel Rabuku Omondi, the general’s son who had ruled out foul play in his father’s death, “I want to ask our Uncle, the General’s son, young man, don’t be impatient with us allow investigators to do their work! It’s not because of anything it is because once bitten twice shy. We asking for no stones to be left unturned and let us know the truth on who killed General Ogolla.” Oburu said.

    Family rules out foul play

The general’s family differed. Joel was very close to the father and is said to know a lot of things about the father and that he went with the father to some of the most sensitive places and meetings hence he took charge of the funeral on behalf of the family.

Speaking during the funeral service at Senator Obama Primary school in Ng’iya area Siaya County yesterday, Joel said that his father had disclosed to him how he enjoyed a cordial relationship with President William Ruto, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale.

Joel said that his death was a big blow to the three with whom he had great plans to turn around the security situation in the country.

“He would tell me, I have had a very good meeting with the boss. And not with the President alone but also with the Deputy President as well. He really enjoyed his company and formed very serious rela- tionship of securing the country. And the cabinet secretary (Duale), these people become like brothers,” Joel said.

The Ogolla’s family during the burial.

He said that the President was equally devastated by the untimely death of General Ogolla calling on the pub- lic to stop speculating about what could have caused the death of his father. “Even yesterday (Saturday) people were still speculating, ooh President appointed him because of this. I want to clear the air about the conversations I had with my fa- ther about his time with the President. He didn’t divulge any national security issues but generally, I feel it is important to clear the air.

“The President didn’t have to appoint him first of all. And nitially, he saw his competencies and decided that this was the man for the job. Very quickly they started becoming friends and they formed a serious chemistry,” he said.

The refusal of the family to advance the assassination narrative didn’t ogre go well with most regional leaders. Hence Oburu’s call that the death of Gen. Ogola was beyond the family. It is was made to appear as more of a tribe issue, hence the luonization of Ogolla’s death and Raila eyeing the continental position could not risk to be the headline of that theory.

Raila, however, attended the memorial service at Ulinzi Sports Complex on Saturday.

Another unnamed politician cited by a local daily said the Bomas controversy and the ‘mood on the ground’ could have led to Raila skipping the event because he would not be in a position to talk about some of the issues that his supporters could have wanted him to address.

“The way the people applauded Senator Oburu and Governor Orengo signals what they wanted to hear and Raila may have avoided going that route due to his working relationship with the Kenya Kwanza regime,” noted the politician.

Analysts also view the move by Raila to issue a separate press release away from his Azimio co-principals could be a pointer that he did not want to issue a hard-hitting statement to the government that is backing his African Union Commission chairmanship bid.

While Raila in his statement urged the government to expedite the probe into the cause of the accident that claimed Ogolla’s life, his co-principals Martha Karua, Kalonzo Musyoka, Mwangi Wa Iria, Eugene Wamalwa and George Wajackhoya raised concerns on the accident they want the Ruto-led administration to respond to.

Raila raised concerns about the state of helicopters and other equipment being used by the security officers.

“Many near-death encounters have occurred with the security aircraft. We may never know what exactly brought down the helicopter in which the general died.

“It is our prayer that this tragedy may mark the beginning of a serious relook into our security equipment, especially aircrafts with a view to undertaking a complete overhaul and modernization of the equipment. That was the General’s vision,” he said.

Orengo Ordered To Pay Ongwae’s Mother Sh1M For Defamation

A Kisii court has ordered Siaya Governor James Orengo to pay former Kisii Governor James Ongwae ‘s 94-year-old mother, Grace Moraa sh1 million and to issue her a public apology in a defamation suit where the governor used derogatory language towards her person at a political rally in Kisii.

Her lawyer Peter Wanyama says the governor didn’t show remorse during the hearing. Her husband testified that they were listening to radio at their home in Kisii when they heard Orengo utter the defamatory words, repeatedly. He told the magistrate that if Orengo had a political problem with his son, the best way was to confront him directly ; there was no need to drag his wife in the matter.

Wanyama went further to slam the governor for taking his jugular to the old mother, “Instead of doing his politics against his equal, he went after the mother.”

    The lawsuit

The suit stemmed from the remarks Orengo made during the Azimio s Baraza la Wananchi forum at Gusii Stadium on February 17, 2023.

The function was attended by, among others, Azimio leader Raila Odinga and Kisii Governor Simba Arati.

In the petition, Moraa argued that Orengo ‘failed to prudently discharge his duty of care in uttering a false statement resulting in consequences leading to injury to her’.

Orengo, she further argued, did not publish a clear apology equal to the published video in which he made the vulgar utterances against her.

She sought payment for general damages for ‘slander, aggravated and exemplary damages’.

She is further pushed for the publication of an apology commensurate with the magnitude of the offence.

Moraa, additionally in her prayers, wanted Orengo, or his agents, permanently barred from making similar statements about her.

In the suit papers, Orengo is said to have contemptuously described the Defendant as ‘incapable of bearing and raising a person worthy of Ongwae’ s stature ‘.

She says the sentiments were made to soil her reputation and standing in the family and larger society.

The defamatory words were widely published on YouTube and social media.

In his judgement, Hon. Mutai the trial magistrate was satisfied that all the ingredients of defamation had been proved and awarded damages.

Siaya Deputy Governor William Oduol is facing a Senate hearing after ward representatives removed him from office. The hearing is conducted by the Senate Special Committee, chaired by Senator William Kisang’ from Elgeyo Marakwet.

The agenda for Wednesday’s hearing includes a conference of parties, the introduction of the Special Committee Members, Members representing the County Assembly of Siaya, and the council. The Deputy Governor and his counsel will also be introduced to the committee.

The committee will read out the charges against the Deputy Governor and proceed to hear the evidence presented by the County Assembly of Siaya. On Thursday, June 22, 2023, the Deputy Governor will present his evidence.

The County Assembly members unanimously voted to impeach Oduol due to gross misconduct, violation of the Constitution, and abuse of office. The Assembly Speaker, William Oduol, pronounced the decision on June 8, 2023, after giving the Deputy Governor an opportunity to be heard.

Throughout the process, the Deputy Governor has the right to appear and be represented before the Senate committee to defend himself. If the committee finds no evidence supporting the allegations, the proceedings conclude.

However, if evidence is found, the Senate will vote on the impeachment charges, ensuring a fair hearing for the Deputy Governor.

If a majority of the Senate members vote in favor of the impeachment, the Deputy Governor will be removed from office. If the Senate rejects the impeachment charges, the Senate Speaker will notify the speaker of the respective county assembly.

However, the same charges can be reintroduced before the assembly after three months if the Senate votes against the impeachment. If the Senate upholds the assembly’s impeachment, a vacancy will occur in the deputy governor position.

In such a scenario, the responsibility falls on the county governor to nominate a new deputy within 14 days. The Members of County Assembly will then vote on whether to approve or reject the nomination within 60 days.

The report by the Special Committee will be presented in the Senate during a Special sitting on June 26, 2023.

Piki Piki Ponki Lawyer: Orengo Vs Oduol battle

William Oduol finds himself embroiled in a heated feud with his boss, Governor James Orengo.

The conflict stems from alleged plots to oust Oduol from the party, tarnish his reputation with corruption allegations, and even bribe MCAs to remove him from office.

Governor Orengo’s actions are driven by his fear that Oduol could pose a formidable challenge in the upcoming 2027 elections. Determined to hinder Oduol’s future political aspirations, Orengo is leaving no stone unturned in his efforts to frustrate his deputy.

MCAs Approve Motion To Impeach Siaya Deputy Governor William Oduol

The motion to impeach Siaya County Deputy Governor William Oduol has been approved by the County Assembly.

The motion was tabled by East Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Gordon Onguru who accused Oduol of gross misconduct.

38 County Assembly MCAs Monday voted to endorse the impeachment motion that could potentially see Oduol become first Deputy Governor to be impeached after the August 9 polls.

The assembly has now formed a 10-member special committee to look into the matter and report back to the house within the next 10 days.

Oduol, who has been expelled from the ODM Party, accuses the Governor James Orengo-led administration of misappropriation of public funds.

He has vowed to fight to the bitter end until he exposes how millions of public funds were withdrawn from the county kitty in mysterious circumstances.

Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei was quick to weigh-in on the matter terming the move sickening.

“The impeachment proceedings & removal from ODM party of Siaya Deputy Governor H.E Oduol by Tinga is sickening & nauseating for exposing corruption in Siaya County govt. As a Senate, we shall NOT impeach DG Oduol nor confirm impeachment proceedings from Siaya County Assembly against him. This once again has confirmed Tinga as Lord of corruption, poverty and impunity! Blessed afternoon,” charged Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei.
