Pressure Mounts To Charge IG Mutyambai’s Son Who Killed Two In Drunk Driving Accident

Pressure is being mounted for the arrest of Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai’s son David Mwendwa who killed two Boda Boda riders in an accident while under alcohol influence according to reports.

Mwendwa is said to have run over a pedestrian before colliding with two motorcycle riders, fatally injuring them along Nairobi’s Southern Bypass.

Though lucky to be alive, the pedestrian remains in critical condition; Mwendwa is alleged to have been intoxicated when the accident occurred.

Mwendwa supposedly fled from the scene alongside two female passengers on board the Toyota Hilux truck he was driving.

Neither the wreckage of the car nor a police report on the accident was available at Lang’ata Police Station, in whose jurisdiction the accident happened. This sparked talks of a cover-up.

Nairobi County Traffic Commandant Joshua Omukata has however refuted claims that the police were covering up the accident to exonerate Mwendwa, saying investigations will be conducted without putting into consideration the suspect’s relatives.

“Even if he is the son of the IG, the thing ahead of us is an accident. We are not investigating the son of the IG we are investigating the accident. It is not about other personalities,” he said.

Mwendwa presented himself at Lang’ata Police Station on Friday evening, a day after the accident took place.

David Mwendwa and Inspector General of Police (IG) Hillary Mutyambai.

Omukata says a medical examination will be conducted to establish whether he was drunk at the time of the accident.

“At this point, investigations about the accident are at an advanced stage and in due course, our file will complete once we obtain crucial evidence regarding the accident before we submit the file to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice,” NPS said in an earlier statement.

There are accusations against the IG that he’s using his power privileges to coverup for his son and delay justice. Dennis Itumbi in a post, alleged that the IG had bribed the bereaved families with Sh200K each and a widow promised a job with the Police in order to go slow on the case.

It is also alleged that the pickup involved in the accident is a police car which implicates the case as to how a police car ended up in the hands of a civilian a matter that equally puts the IG in trouble for misuse of public property.

The family of one of the deceased, a 28-year-old motorcycle rider, was thrown into disbelief after identifying the body of their kin at the City Mortuary three days after he went missing.

A postmortem of one of the rider’s body revealed that he succumbed after sustaining head and leg fractures.

Their misery was compounded by the frustrations they faced under the police handling the matter, who they accused of nonchalance and unwillingness to divulge crucial details about the accident.

“We have been taken round in circles. You can see the officer wants to help but when they think of repercussions that are likely to accompany them, they retreat,” said one of the family members.

Speaking in Garissa County, DPP Haji said he will do all he can in his powers to ensure the families get timely justice over the death of their loved ones.

“I will also check my desk. If the file on the case is ready, we will proceed and prosecute. As we said, justice will be served to every Kenyan” Haji said in Garissa.

This statement has raised concerns as to why the file had not reached the DPP’s table yet the accident took place eight days ago on December 2.

After presenting himself to the police in Lang’ata following public pressure, the son was released on Sh20K cash bail and the delay for him to be presented in court has raised eyebrows. In a country where the monied get away with a lot, there’s acceptable reason to worry if justice will be done or Mutyambai’s son will get away with it.

Similarly, a senior police officer Kingori Mwangi was trying to avoid traffic by driving on the wrong side of the road. He hit two pedestrians who were crossing the road. The two pedestrians suffered multiple injuries. The case silently faded away.

Question that many wait to get an answer to is if the IG’s son will be held accountable, charged for the deaths or the case will die naturally like many others?

UDA politicians want Mutyambai out over Laikipia attacks

Thirteen politicians allied to the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) are calling on the Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai to resign for failing to end the deadly violence and killings in Laikipia.

The lawmakers led by the vocal Kandara MP Alice Wahome accused Mutyambai of laxity in the violent conflict in Laikipia where a dusk to dawn curfew has been imposed as police fights to flash out armed herders who have attacked the region. Wahome said the manner in which the IG is handling the crisis is exposing his incompetence.

Another UDA ally, Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua also called on Mutyambai to take full responsibility of the skirmishes and resign as Laikipia Senator John Kinyua challenged the State to deploy the military to contain the situation.

“The work of any government is to protect its people, if it cannot protect its people then what else can it do?” Kinyua posed.

The politicians who spoke at Parliament buildings want the government to resettle all the victims of banditry attacks in Laikipia county even as it jails rogue politicians who are inciting residents to violence.

This comes barely a week after the same bunch of politicians criticized the State and the police boss for downgrading the security details attached to the Deputy President William Ruto. The debate that followed the incident pushed DP’s Chief of Staff Ken Osinde to write to the IG as he sought explanations for the withdrawal of GSU officers from Ruto’s official residence.

But Ruto downplayed the saga during a campaign meeting at Karen where he ‘advised’ Mutyambai to deploy the officers in areas that need serious security enforcement like Baringo and Laikipia which are under banditry attacks.

UDA allies are making their demands as Interior CS Fred Matiang’i maintains that the government is dealing with the situation and hunting down the  criminals who are terrorizing residents of the Olmoran area in Laikipia. He also claimed that security officers on the ground have taken full control of the situation.

DP Ruto Protests Withdrawal Of His Security

Deputy President William Ruto has written to the Inspector General of police seeking an explanation on the withdrawal of security at his official residence in Karen.

This after the security officer in charge of General Service Unit attached to his residence informed the Deputy President that he had received verbal orders to withdraw GSU officers effective 2pm Thursday afternoon.

Communication Secretary in the Office of The Deputy President David Mugonyi says the withdrawal extends to all his residences, adding that no explanation was offered for the unlawful act.

“The decision has been made contrary to the Police Service Standing Orders Chapter 8 section 5(E) that the GSU Commandant shall be responsible for the security of the President, the Deputy President, State Houses and Lodges,” He said.

Mugonyi says the withdrawal is the latest installment in a sustained and systematic effort to undermine the Deputy President’s personal security in pursuit of political vendetta saying it exposes him to personal harm.

Mugonyi further highlights several instances where security agencies have been used to frustrate the Deputy President among them the recent disruption of Mahoo MCA funeral where he was in attendance.

“In January 2020 Government officials acting with authority looked out the Deputy President out of his official residence in Mombasa which remains locked to date,” He added.

In response, The National Police Service says the withdrawal of security at Deputy President William Ruto’s official residence is a normal reassignment of duties within the service.

“The Security of Government Buildings (SGB) has been deployed to provide general security to the official residence of the Deputy President from the General Service Unit,” He said.

Shioso further added that the “Presidential Escort Unit continues to provide close protection security to the Deputy President.”

The withdrawal was condemned by elected leaders in the Country with Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja saying providing the Deputy President with security isn’t a favour and Police officers and their bosses must stop playing politics with it.

“I am not associated with DP Ruto but it’s reckless and careless to withdraw his security and it should be reinstated immediately. The Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, Interior CS Fred Matiangi and Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho should be held accountable if anything happens to the Deputy President,” He said.
