Mt Kenya UDA MPs Give Hassan Omar 48 Hours to Quit

A fresh political storm has erupted inside the ruling United Democratic Alliance after a section of lawmakers from the Mt Kenya region demanded the resignation of the party’s Secretary General Hassan Omar over remarks they described as ethnic profiling against the Kikuyu community.

The legislators, who addressed the press on Wednesday, dismissed Hassan Omar’s public apology and clarification as inadequate, insisting that the comments he allegedly made during a political gathering in Mombasa had crossed the line and could not be brushed aside with a statement.

The MPs accused the UDA Secretary General of making divisive remarks while discussing historical land injustices at the Coast, arguing that his statements unfairly targeted members of the Mt Kenya community and risked fuelling ethnic tensions at a politically sensitive moment for the country.

In a strongly worded address, the lawmakers said the ruling party was founded on the promise of national unity and inclusivity and warned that leaders occupying senior positions should not engage in rhetoric that appears to alienate communities.

“As elected Members of Parliament, we speak today with one clear and equal vocal voice. We flatly reject the statement of clarification and apology issued by the UDA Secretary General, Honourable Hassan Omar. An apology cannot erase or excuse calculated ethnic profiling,” the MPs declared.

The lawmakers maintained that every Kenyan has a constitutional right to live, invest, own property and conduct business in any part of the country without intimidation or ethnic targeting. They argued that Omar’s remarks undermined those principles and threatened the cohesion the Kenya Kwanza administration has repeatedly preached since taking power.

The MPs demanded Hassan Omar’s immediate resignation from the powerful party position and issued a 48-hour ultimatum, warning that failure to step aside would trigger further political action within the ruling coalition.

“We demand nothing less than the immediate resignation of Honourable Hassan Omar. Enough is enough. Pack your things and leave our party,” the legislators said.

The dispute now threatens to expose widening cracks within President William Ruto’s ruling party at a time when political alignments ahead of the 2027 Kenyan General Election are already beginning to take shape.

The controversy stems from remarks reportedly made by Hassan Omar during a political event at the Coast where he spoke about historical land ownership disputes, an issue that has remained politically sensitive for decades in the region. Critics interpreted the remarks as targeting Kikuyu landowners and business people living at the Coast, sparking backlash from leaders allied to the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Since the remarks surfaced, politicians from Mt Kenya and other regions have intensified pressure on the UDA leadership to take disciplinary action against the Secretary General, arguing that the party cannot claim to champion unity while tolerating statements perceived to be ethnically divisive.

The growing rebellion also places additional pressure on the UDA leadership to contain internal tensions that have increasingly emerged in recent months over succession politics, regional interests and competition for influence within President Ruto’s camp.

Some grassroots leaders from Mt Kenya have already threatened to reconsider their loyalty to the ruling party if no action is taken against Hassan Omar, a development that could complicate UDA’s efforts to maintain its political dominance in one of its key support bases.

Despite the uproar, Hassan Omar has defended himself, saying his remarks were taken out of context and insisting that he was addressing historical injustices rather than targeting any community. However, the explanation appears to have done little to calm anger among a section of UDA leaders who now want tougher action taken against him.

Nyali MP Mohammed Ali Withdraws from UDA Grassroots Elections, Cites Top Leadership Interference

Nyali Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali has announced his withdrawal from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) grassroots elections in Mombasa, accusing the party’s top leadership of compromising the process.

In a strongly worded statement, Ali revealed that his team, #TeamMohamedAli, will not participate in the upcoming elections, citing blatant interference and manipulation by the UDA Secretary General (SG) Hassan Omar.

Ali, a seasoned journalist-turned-politician, expressed his frustration with the party’s internal processes.

“It has become unequivocally clear that the upcoming Mombasa’s grassroots elections have been compromised, and hence, it is quite unfortunate that #TeamMohamedAli will not be taking any part in them,” he stated.

The MP accused Omar of handpicking officials to influence the election outcome, describing the move as a “profound conflict of interest.”

Ali further criticized the SG for micromanaging the party to prioritize personal political interests over the will of the people.

“His tendency to micromanage the party, prioritizing his personal political interests over the will of the people, is not only unacceptable but a grave disservice to the citizens of Mombasa,” he said.

The MP’s remarks highlight growing tensions within UDA, a party that has been preparing for its grassroots elections scheduled for April 11-12, 2025.

The UDA National Elections Board recently concluded a weeklong sensitization and training program for aspirants in counties such as Taita-Taveta and Lamu, as part of its preparations for the polls.

The training, which took place at the party headquarters, aimed to equip ward and sub-county aspirants for the elections.

However, Ali’s withdrawal casts a shadow over the party’s efforts to conduct a fair and transparent process in Mombasa.

Despite the setback, Ali reassured his supporters of his unwavering commitment to their interests.

“Despite this disheartening development, I want to assure you all as my avid and loyal supporters that we will not be deterred nor fazed,” he said.

He hinted at a potential mass exit from the party if the mismanagement persists, stating, “If he persists in treating the party as his personal property, we will be left with no choice but to decamp as one.”

Ali emphasized that UDA, like any political party, belongs to the people, not to any single individual, regardless of their position.

“When the right moment comes and the rubber hits the road, we will confront this head-on,” he added, signaling his readiness to take further action if necessary.

“During the announcement of the presidential results, the Chairman Wafula Chebukati, Commissioners Prof. Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu, and CS/CEO Marjan H. Marjan were physically attacked, assaulted, and injured by persons in the company of certain political leaders. We call for the arrest and prosecution of these assailants regardless of their political affiliation” he said.

While calling for the arrest of the perpetrators, Chebukati said his staff were fearing for their lives as such could not report for duty.

“The Commission is concerned that some of its critical staff who objectively and impartially performed their duties at the National Tallying Centre are being intimidated and harassed through profiling and/or arbitrary arrests. This has instilled fear within the staff, who are now unable to report to the office for duty. This harassment must stop forthwith” he stated.

“In view of the prevailing circumstances, the Commission has postponed the by-elections slated for 23rd August 2022, to a date to be announced through a gazette notice” he announced.

The United Democratic Alliance – UDA Mombasa Gubernatorial candidate Hassan Omar and his Deputy Selina Maitha are set to address a presser on the same at the Party’s Headquarters, The Hustler Centre, Nyali.

Wrangles threaten to break UDA’s Mombasa base

United Democratic Alliance party which is associated with the Deputy President William Ruto risks witnessing a massive defection if he fails to neutralize the feud between former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar and other party aspirants.

A  section of budding politicians eyeing elective positions in upcoming 2022 elections through the party are accusing Omar of importing his sycophants from Wiper Democratic Movement where he previously served as the secretary general to shortchange UDA loyalists.

Omar who is eyeing Mombasa’s gubernatorial seat has hijacked UDA party in Mombasa and sidelined politicians who have stood with DP Ruto even before he [Omar] was poached from Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper party. One Ali Mwatsahu who is eyeing the Mvita parliamentary seat is accusing the DP’s point-man of handpicking and planting aspirants for various elective position in Mombasa County without consulting party leadership.

Mwatsahu emphasized that UDA is for hustlers and not elites like Omar who are just masquerading and doing less to popularize DP Ruto’s candidature down to the grassroots.

The wrangles are intensifying just a week after a sections of UDA luminaries opposed to Omar met Baringo senator Gideon Moi at a Mombasa hotel and vowed to shift their allegiance to KANU if Ruto does not move with speed to tame despotic Omar.

But Omar who is still remains unperturbed with negative developments has maintained meeting his preferred aspirants as the country moves closure to 2022 general elections. He wants Nicholas Mutuku to fly the UDA flag in Changamwe constituency, Karisa Nzai in Jomvu, Twaha for Tudor and Domoko in Likoni despite Masoud Mwahima, the son of the former area MP commanding an unwavering support.

He also prefers Peterson Mittau for Mombasa senatorial seat and Esther Chepng’etich for woman rep seat but his opponents in UDA claim that his list is not electable in Mombasa. UDA supporters are also accusing Omar of planting goons as security men at the Hustlers Centre in Nyali to intimidate his opponents.
