Equatorial Guinea Orders Crackdown On Sex In Government Offices After Videos Leaked

Equatorial Guinea on Tuesday ordered a crackdown on sex in government offices after private videos leaked on social media appeared to show a senior finance ministry official having sex with several women in various places, including his office.

The government said it was taking action because the videos had denigrated the tiny Central African country’s image.

Equatorial Guinea has been ruled by the same president for decades and the scandal has been shaking the government since the videos first emerged last week.

Local media reports said hundreds of amateur videos had been found at the finance official’s home during a raid associated with a corruption investigation. The women featured in the videos appeared to include wives of other powerful government figures and other family members, local media said.

On Tuesday, Vice President Nguema Obiang Mangue ordered new measures to prevent judiciary and ministry officials from engaging in illicit acts at work, a government statement said. These included installing security cameras in all offices as well as stepped-up security.

“The executive is taking this decision following the videos of a sexual nature that have gone viral on social media in recent days and that denigrate the country’s image,” the state information agency said in the statement.

The statement said the measures were agreed during emergency meetings with the Supreme Court, attorney general and others.

It said those appearing in the sex tapes would be suspended, without providing names, while those responsible for securing the buildings in which the videos were allegedly filmed would be reprimanded for failing to do their jobs.

President Teodoro Obiang has ruled Equatorial Guinea, a nation of some 1.7 million people on the west coast of Central Africa for 45 years and is the world’s longest-serving president.

Baltasar Ebang Engonga, Director General of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF), is currently at the centre of a major scandal after authorities discovered hundreds of explicit videos allegedly featuring him in compromising situations.

The videos reportedly include encounters with high-profile individuals, such as his brother’s wife, his cousin, and the sister of the President of Equatorial Guinea.

The scandal emerged in the course of a fraud investigation, during which investigators found over 300 videos on Ebang Engonga’s computer, showing encounters with multiple women, including some who are married.

The footage, discovered in his personal office, was said to have been recorded with consent and has since been leaked online, causing a media uproar.

Equatorial Guinea’s Vice President, Teodoro Nguema, addressed the scandal in a public statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), where he condemned inappropriate conduct within government offices.

He stressed that sexual relations are strictly prohibited in administrative workplaces and warned of repercussions for violations.

“Given the abuse that has been shown on social media in Equatorial Guinea in recent days, and remembering that ministries are solely and exclusively for carrying out administrative work in support of the country’s development, sexual relations in offices are prohibited,” Nguema stated.

“Control mechanisms are already in place, and anyone who violates this rule again will be subject to disciplinary proceedings for indecent conduct and will be dismissed from their job.”

His role includes overseeing financial investigations and managing activities aimed at curbing financial corruption in the country.

Married with six children, Ebang Engonga has held a prominent position in the agency, which has significant influence over the nation’s financial transparency and regulatory framework.

Baltasar Engonga, the Director-General of the National Financial Investigation Agency in Equatorial Guinea, has been arrested for allegedly having extramarital relationships with the sister of the country’s president and the wives of notable people.

It was learnt that the illicit affairs were seen in sex tapes recovered from his house in the course of a fraud investigation against the 54-year-old economist which resulted in the search of his house and office on impromptu notice.

The building was searched by anti-graft officials who came across several CDs that later revealed his sexcapades with different married women.

The video showed contacts with high-profile individuals such as his brother’s wife, his cousin, the President of Equatorial Guinea’s sister, the Director-General of Police’s wife, and the wives of over 20 of the country’s ministries, among others.

The film, located in his office, was alleged to have been recorded with his permission and has since been published online, sparking a media frenzy.

According to a report by the local media outlet Ahora EG, Engonga has been involved in a sexual scandal unmatched in Equatorial Guinea’s history since last October.

The former ANIF DG known as “Bello” had sexual contact with multiple women, some of whom were married, and videotaped these private interactions.

The report read, “The most striking thing is that some scenes took place in his work office, including moments in which he is seen sleeping with a woman next to the National Flag. Based on this sexual scandal, the Executive has stated that the measure is a direct response to the acts that have affected the image of the country.

“With these new measures, the Government hopes to establish a clear precedent on the expected conduct of public officials in order to create a more respectful work environment in the public and private administration of Equatorial Guinea.

“For days now, erotic videos have been circulating on social media featuring Baltasar EBANG ENGONGA, better known as “Bello”, who is currently the Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF) and is currently imprisoned for alleged corruption issues.”
