Kenyans Cry Foul Over Dubai Jobs Scam After CS Mutua’s Advertisement

Job seekers who responded to Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua’s advertisement for motorcycle riders in Dubai have accused unknown individuals of demanding Sh200,000 bribes, sparking fresh questions about the authenticity of government-endorsed overseas employment opportunities.

The controversy erupted when a Kenyan using the handle @Eagern_KE on X exposed what he described as a fraudulent scheme targeting applicants who had attended interviews at the National Industrial Training Authority offices in Athi River between September 11 and 13.

On September 10, Dr Mutua had posted on his official X account advertising positions for male riders aged 21-38 to work in Dubai, with attractive monthly salaries ranging from AED 2,100 to AED 2,500, or performance-based pay of AED 7.5 per successful delivery.

CS Mutua’s post that has since been pulled down from his social media pages.

“We were told it was free; now that I woke up early,” echoing similar experiences reported in other recruitment drives, @Eagern_KE claimed that after successfully completing interviews and receiving job offer letters, applicants were added to a WhatsApp group where administrators demanded the substantial payment to secure positions.

When questioned about the unexpected fees, the group administrators allegedly ceased communication and blocked further messages from the applicants.

The incident adds to mounting concerns about overseas job scams targeting Kenyans desperate for employment opportunities.

Parliament has summoned Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua and the National Employment Authority (NEA) over the swindling of youth seeking employment abroad by recruitment agencies, with the Senate Standing Committee on Labour and Social Welfare demanding answers about oversight mechanisms.

This year alone, the government through Labour CS has listed recruitment agencies accused of defrauding Kenyans, as part of a crackdown on rogue operators, highlighting the scale of fraudulent activities in the sector.

Dr Mutua has previously faced criticism over similar overseas job advertisements.

Dr Mutua asked to explain his association with the owner of a recruiting firm that saw Kenyans from Uasin Gishu lose millions of shillings in fake Dubai and Canada job schemes, while victims reported they had lost Sh720 million on the promise of overseas jobs, according to police.

The latest allegations come at a time when Kenya grapples with significant employment challenges.

Unemployment Rate in Kenya decreased to 5.40 percent in 2024 from 5.60 percent in 2023, though over 16.8% unemployment among 20–24-year-olds and a 16.3% NEET rate indicates youth continue to face particular difficulties finding work.

The vulnerability of job seekers has created fertile ground for fraudsters who exploit the lack of regulation in online recruitment.

Social media platforms and messaging applications like WhatsApp have become common tools for building trust with victims before demanding payments.

Social media users have expressed frustration with both the alleged scammers and the government’s handling of overseas employment programs.

“Now the mfs blocked us from texting on the group,” wrote @Tejay_001, while others questioned the effectiveness of government oversight in protecting citizens from exploitation.

As of Sunday evening, Dr Mutua had not responded to the latest allegations, nor had the Ministry of Labour issued any statement regarding the claims.

The silence has left affected job seekers without recourse and raised questions about the government’s commitment to protecting citizens seeking opportunities abroad.

The Dubai motorcycle riders controversy serves as the latest cautionary tale in Kenya’s ongoing struggle with overseas job scams, highlighting the urgent need for enhanced oversight and protection mechanisms for citizens pursuing international employment opportunities.

  • CS Alfred Mutua’s Qatar Police Jobs Scandal: Kenyan Job Seekers Left Stranded

CS Alfred Mutua’s Qatar Police Jobs Scandal: Kenyan Job Seekers Left Stranded

What was touted as a golden opportunity for 200 Kenyans to join the Qatar police service has devolved into a major scandal, leaving dozens of job seekers jobless and deep in debt after paying hefty recruitment fees.

In December 2024, Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua confidently announced during a labor and migration forum at Nairobi’s Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) that the government was finalizing a deal to place Kenyans in Qatar’s police force.

“We just recruited 200 police officers for Qatar, and they are just doing their security check. By the end of this month they will be going to Qatar to work as police officers making good money,” Mutua declared at the event, which was attended by Qatar’s ambassador to Kenya, Mohammed Mutair.

    The Broken Promise

Documents reviewed by Kenya Insights reveal that successful candidates were promised an initial monthly stipend of around Sh100,000 during training, with salaries doubling upon absorption into the Qatari police service.

The contracts offered to candidates stated they would receive “a fixed monthly salary of QR4,200” (approximately Sh140,000) plus “QR1,500 per month as an exceptional allowance” after completing training.

However, multiple victims who spoke to this reporter tell a different story.

After paying substantial fees to secure these positions, they arrived in Qatar only to be detained in camps, have their phones confiscated, and subsequently be deported back to Kenya following new medical examinations.

    The Companies Behind the Scheme

The Qatar-Kenya police recruitment deal was exclusively assigned to Qhire International Services Company Limited, owned by Abdullahi Ibrahim and Mohammed Hussein.

Inspocare Health Ltd, owned by Damaris Ndani Soo and Isaac Mbithi Maundu, was contracted to conduct pre-departure medical screening.

Business records show that Qhire markets itself as an immigration and relocation support agency connecting job seekers with overseas opportunities in the United States, Canada, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.

Inspocare Health presents itself as a premier laboratory and wellness checkup center operating from Muthaiga Square on Thika Road.

    The Victims’ Accounts

CS Alfred Mutua sees off Kenyans at JKIA going to Qatar after landing jobs through the government program, 13 Dec 2024.

Abdiwahid Hamdi Aden, 26, paid Sh250,000 to Qhire International Services and approximately Sh10,000 to Inspocare Health for medical tests.

Upon arrival in Qatar in February 2025, Qatari authorities flagged his medical screening report as doctored after conducting fresh laboratory tests.

“They kept telling us that we should not worry about the lab tests given they are well connected,” Aden said, adding that he has been unsuccessfully pursuing a refund.

Abdulfatah Ismail, 29, borrowed Sh250,000 from his brother after hearing about the opportunity.

After paying the recruitment fee and receiving a clean bill of health from Inspocare, he was shocked when Qatari officials claimed discrepancies in his medical reports and sent him back to Kenya.

“I am now looking for a job to refund my brother the Sh250,000. I have been calling the recruitment agency and Inspocare asking them why they lied to us, but they don’t pick my calls. I feel frustrated and conned,” Ismail said.

Abdulqafar Adan, 25, who also paid Sh250,000, described being held in isolated camps in Qatar where their phones were confiscated.

“We were treated like illegal immigrants,” he said. After three weeks of waiting and undergoing new medical tests, he was deported on February 22.

    Official Silence

When contacted, Labour CS Alfred Mutua declined to clarify whether the Qatar police deal was a government-to-government arrangement or explain who was mandated to conduct the recruitment.

“I do not deal specifically with agency operations. I will find out the status and revert,” Mutua responded in a text message, promising feedback within two days.

However, no further response was provided by press time.

The Qatar Embassy in Nairobi referred inquiries to Kenya’s National Employment Authority (NEA), whose Director-General Edith Okoki did not respond to calls or messages.

Representatives from both Qhire International Services and Inspocare Health have failed to address the allegations despite multiple requests for comment.

    Growing Scandal

This controversy adds to mounting criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s overseas jobs programs, which victims claim have become goldmines for rogue recruiters exploiting desperate job seekers.

The scandal has now caught the attention of Kenya’s Senate, which has summoned CS Mutua to explain the failed overseas jobs initiatives and why thousands of youths who paid substantial fees never secured the promised positions abroad.

As investigations continue, many victims remain jobless and in debt, with some afraid to return to their rural homes because they cannot account for the money raised for what they believed would be life-changing opportunities abroad.

  • Labour CS Alfred Mutua Announces Plans To Export 200,000 Kenyan Workers To Qatar

Labour CS Alfred Mutua Announces Plans To Export 200,000 Kenyan Workers To Qatar

Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection, Alfred Mutua, has announced plans to increase the number of Kenyans working in Qatar to hit 200,000.

Speaking after a meeting with Qatar Labour Minister Ali Saeed Samikh Al-Marri on Sunday, October 6, 2024, Mutua indicated that the new agreement would see the number of Kenyans working in Qatar increase to 200,000 from 67,000.

During the meeting, CS Mutua lauded the move indicating that it is key to addressing the issue of unemployment in the country.

“Currently, there are about 67,000 Kenyans working in Qatar. With this new agreement, we anticipate that number to rise significantly—possibly reaching over 200,000—unlocking a wave of employment opportunities for Kenyan professionals in Qatar’s key development sectors,” Mutua’s statement read in part.

    Amending MoU

Mutua said Kenya and Qatar are looking to amend the bilateral agreement signed in 2012 between the two countries, to allow for more Kenyans to travel in to the Arab country for work.

The CS emphasised that the amendment would give skilled Kenyans to get jobs in Qatar unlike previously where only unskilled Kenyans were majorly considered for opportunities.

“I am pleased to announce that Kenya has begun bilateral talks with Qatar to finalize a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will open doors for skilled Kenyan workers to work in the Gulf state. This new agreement will amend the 2012 Bilateral Labour Agreement, which was primarily focused on unskilled labour migration, and now focus on skilled sectors,” Mutua stated.

“This MoU will open thousands of opportunities for skilled Kenyans to contribute to Qatar’s growth while gaining valuable experience and bettering their livelihoods. The talks reaffirm Kenya’s commitment to providing ethical, trained, and well-prepared workers to meet Qatar’s needs while ensuring that our workers are protected and treated fairly,” he added.

Together with his counterpart, Mutua said among the plans in place is to set up a visa centre in Kenya to avoid delays for those looking for job opportunities in Qatar.

Mutua’s remarks come days after President William Ruto announced that Germany is open to accepting Kenyans to work in their country.

During his visit, Ruto signed an agreement with German firms allowing Kenyans to apply for the jobs.

The government is however yet to issue a progress report on Germany’s job opportunities secured.

  • Shock As Alleged Scammer Judy Chepchirchir Headlines Ruto’s ‘Kazi Majuu’ Initiative

Shock As Alleged Scammer Judy Chepchirchir Headlines Ruto’s ‘Kazi Majuu’ Initiative

Yesterday President William Ruto ‘Gava Mkononi’ an initiative that aims to digitize 5000 government services made accessible on the E-Citizen platform, to enhance service delivery, increase revenue collection, promote transparency, and eliminate corruption.

Ministries, Departments, and Agencies are now onboarding respective services with the hopes in a significant spike in revenue generate from levies and fees charged for government services.

During the launch, Dr. Alfred Mutua, the CS of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs announced his ministry’s initiative dubbed ‘Kazi Majuu’ where he explained that Kenyans looking for opportunities abroad would log in to the e-Citizen portal and find available opportunities and to make it look more attractive the portal is to include information about genuine agents with job connections abroad. In this he explained to the president that unscrupulous agents would be cut out of the ecosystem that has recently seen many youths lose millions to fraudsters.

However, there was a problem, Judy Jepchirchir whom the CS fronted as the face of genuine agents is herself a subject of fraud and has been under investigations for scamming youths with nonexistent jobs.

Judy (circled) during the Gava Mkononi launch with CS Mutua.

Early last month, the Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome revealed that the police are investigating First Choice Recruitment Agency for allegedly scamming youths millions in Eldoret.

Appearing before the Senate Committee on Labour and Social Welfare, Koome promised to ensure that suspects involved in the financial fraud of more than 5,000 youths in Eldoret are brought to book.

Koome informed the Committee that nearly 300 victims of the First Choice Recruitment Agency have already recorded their statements with the National Police Service financial fraud investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

According to the police, preliminary investigations indicate that last year, First Choice Recruitment Agency registered under two directors namely Judy Jepchirchir and Faith Waringa Gichuhi allegedly scammed youths by purporting to secure jobs and study placements on their behalf in Qatar during the 2022 World Cup.

Each youth allegedly paid Ksh 40,000 and surrendered their passports to the agency, but failed to secure either jobs or study placement.

Her inclusion in the program didn’t go without attracting attention and criticism.

With such a controversial past, the integrity and reliability of ‘Kazi Majuu’ is obviously in jeopardy.

  • Lillian Ng’ang’a: Threats, Fraud And Theft By Governor Mutua

Lillian Ng’ang’a: Threats, Fraud And Theft By Governor Mutua

The divorce is getting messier according to the latest developments by the former Machakos First Lady. Lillian Ng’ang’a has hit an alarm claiming that her life’s in danger from Governor Mutua with whom they recently separated from.

Activist Boniface Mwangi whose house in Machakos was recently bobbed by people he alleges were sent by the same governor, was the first to raise the alarm when he said the governor has been sending serious threats to the former wife and her current lover musician Julius Owino aka Juliani. Mwangi in a viral video claimed Mutua was being a nuisance and only that Lillian was afraid of going public.

In a sharp turn, the ex-wife to the jilted governor has gone public.

Below is a statement issued by Lillian during a press conference accompanied by her lawyer Philip Murgor.

I ended my relationship Alfred Mutua in early June this year. On repeated occasions and as recent as two weeks ago, I’ve seen Mr. Mutua state in
print and social media that we are still friends, and our separation has been amicable.

These are Mr. Mutua’s usual theatrics and lies. Mr. Mutua and I have not spoken since
late August, 2021.On 8th September 2021, Mr. Mutua accompanied by his police bodyguard, Martin Ninghi arrived at my apartment parking lot at Kileleshwa, Nairobi, and without my knowledge or consent and using a spare key which he had illegally obtained, drove away my personal motor vehicle KBY 186G – a car which had been fully registered in my name since 2014. Mr. Mutua proceeded to fraudulently transfer the ownership of the car in the log book into his name, and thereafter sold the vehicle to a 3rd party. I filed a
case which is pending in court so I will not comment further on it, except to ask the
purchaser to be on notice that | maintain my claim to ownership.

I therefore call for a criminal investigation into this serious criminal offence.

    1. Along the same fraudulent conduct, Mr. Mutua recently and illegally transferred my shares in the Ndash Enterprises LTD (the hotel company) to his sister Ann Mbandi Mutua. Again, a clear act of fraud. At no point did I execute a transfer of my shares or otherwise transfer my 1800 shares (45%) shareholding in the company to him, let alonehis sister. My advocates have managed to trace the transaction documents from the
company registry as follows:A purported Circular Resolution dated 10/6/2021 in which the shareholdersapproved the transfer of 1800 shares of Ksh 10 each from Lilian Wangui Nganga to Ann Mandi Mutua.
    2. A purported Transfer of Shares form in pursuance of a Declaration of Trust
dated 10/6/2021 transfer of 1800 shares of Ksh 10 each from Lillian WanguiNganga to Ann Mbandi Mutua. Both documents have been lodged at the Companies Registry together, effectively defrauding me of 90% of my shareholding in Ndash Enterprises LTD, a company I personally incorporated on 30/6/2014 when I held 90.9% of the shareholding. Indeed, I named the company “Nash” after my own high school nickname.
The two documents, which bear a stamps dated 12th and 13th August 2002 bear what
resembles my signature, but not in original form and clearly the signatures have been
electronically superimposed to provide the impression to the Registrar of Companies
that the transaction is genuine, while in effect the documents are clearly forgeries. The transactions by Mr. Mutua are clear and obvious frauds, which he has committed in
the false and mistaken belief, that he is above the law, and will not be held to account
for his criminal acts against me.

I have reported this serious crime this to Kilimani Police Station, under OB NO:
    48/15/09/2021.

Mr. Mutua is overreacting to our separation. Whilst I indicated that I wanted to move on with my life, he thought otherwise.

At a meeting at the Windsor Golf and Country Club on 22d September 2021, in the company of two mutual friends, and after the two criminal incidents, I requested him for a mature and amicable separation and reminded him that, after all, we were not married. Mr. Mutua angrily termed me as his Enemy No 1, and threatened to “crush
me to ash”, as he takes away everything I have, and own. Indeed, this has already started as he has demanded that I refund any money he has ever given to me or made available for my use. He also threatened to harm persons close to me. He
further demanded I apologize and retract the statements I’ve made on social media regarding our breakup, which I declined.

He stated that he had offers from people to kill persons close to me, and threatened that
he might indeed take up the offers to teach some of them a lesson.

He arrogantly stated that he was a very important and powerful person in this Country, and he can get away with anything and everything he has planned to do to me, and my friends. He added that his social media machinery is ready and waiting to “finish” me and my friends completely.
On October 7th 2021, I filed a case in the High Court at Milimani for a restraining order because I believe my life, and those around me were in danger. Mr Mutua is fighting the Restraining Order by rubbishing my claims, and wants the case transferred to Machakos where he believes I will be too scared to step, as he can hire goons to bully
and harass me, when I attend court.

Mr. Mutua has gone to further falsely accused me of abusing drugs, and that I am being used by Governor Kibwana (who is Alfred’s Uncle) and HE Kalonzo Musyoka to bring him down politically – which is complete nonsense, as I have never interacted with the two gentlemen at a personal level.

I am publicly requesting Mr. Mutua to immediately return my property, cease threatening my life, and those around me and stop his arrogance, wanton abuse of power, manipulation and bullying.

He needs to get a life and move on.

  • Governor Mutua Gets Gag Orders Against Boniface Mwangi

Governor Mutua Gets Gag Orders Against Boniface Mwangi

Machakos governor Alfred Mutua has been granted a major reprieve after the high court stopped activist Boniface Mwangi from further defaming him.

High Court judge Margaret Muigai issued the orders in an application filed by the governor.

“An interim injunction is hereby granted restraining Mr Mwangi or his agents, from publishing in any print or electronic media, on any electronic or web-hosted platform, such defamatory material, concerning Governor Mutua,”Justice Muigai ordered.

The judge also certified Governor Mutua’s application as urgent and directed him to serve Mr Mwangi who is expected to respond within two weeks.

This after Governor Mutua through lawyer Harrison Kinyanjui moved to court seeking to bar activist Boniface Mwangi from defaming him further.

The Governor urged the court to issue interim injunction restraining the activist from publishing in any print, electronic media, on any electronic or any web-hosted platform, repeating any publication, innuendos, insinuation, allegations or statement linking him to distraction of his Lukenya house.

The case will be mentioned on November 4.

  • Boniface Mwangi Speaks On Why He Believes Governor Mutua Was Behind His Home’s Bombing And Kenyans Treating Him Like God

Boniface Mwangi Speaks On Why He Believes Governor Mutua Was Behind His Home’s Bombing And Kenyans Treating Him Like God

My family is afraid because of the bombing of my house. Y’know, no one comes to lay explosives in your house as a sign of greetings. They are not coming to say ‘hi’. People who walk around with bombs and guns don’t do that to hand out candies. They hand out bullets and bombs and death.

So will I have to tear down the whole house, whose construction began in July 2020? That will be decided by structural engineers, but there’s one room that is kaput. There are three major cracks on the entire building. The assailants put the explosives in the drainage pipes, so, the kitchen is entirely cracked.

The foundation of the house is very good, which is why not much damage was done. They were putting explosives underneath to crack the foundation. Once the foundation cracks, the house is gone. Also, there was some luck because not all the detonators went off. I don’t know how many didn’t blow up because when the police bomb squad came they told us to move away from the scene.

And I wonder: what if the construction workers were sleeping in that house? Much as the house is incomplete, workers spend time there sometimes. It could have been worse.

By the way, when Isaac, one of the workers, first called to report, I thought it was just a person who had had one too many reporting a petty theft. It was a holiday, you know. And I had just come from an Eric Wainaina concert.

The farm (in Lukenya) is at quite a remote place, eight kilometres from the road. There isn’t much of a road there. It’s a very dusty, hidden place on top of a hill.

At first I told Isaac, ‘Okay, we’ll talk tomorrow.’ It was until they told me the house had been bombed; that it was cracking, that I was jolted. They even sent me videos. That’s when I lost my mind and I uploaded a video online.

You want to know why I suspect Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua had a hand in this? See, the governor has separated from Lillian Ng’ang’a. And Lillian’s story is not mine to tell. But the governor is suspected of doing things, or is trying to do some things, to Lillian and Juliani (the gospel artiste, whose real name is Julius Owino and who has publicly declared being in a relationship with the Lilian) — which were reported to the police.

(Governor Mutua, through his lawyers, has denied any involvement in the explosives incident, accusing Mr Mwangi of tarnishing his reputation and demanding a retraction of social media posts made in reference to him).

I know the governor knows I am building there (this is no proof of any wrongdoing). When they were still an item, Lillian visited the site with the governor’s security and chase cars. And he knows I’ve been there since 2018. It’s because since 2018 I’ve been tweeting about the road heading there.

And what people should know is that I didn’t know Lillian yesterday. I have known her since 2004. I met Lillian through the late) Ann Kamoni, who was my classmate in journalism school. Ann used to be Raila Odinga’s photographer at some point, having previously worked at the Standard Group. She went to the same school as Lillian. As for Juliani, I’ve known him personally for 11 years. So, combined, I’ve known both of them for 28 years.

And I can tell you that those two people are under a lot of pressure. The reason they don’t want to share all they are going through is that people are mocking them. And Lillian loved the governor; so she can’t go public about it. And it’s not my story to tell.

Some people have been saying I’m defying the ‘bro code’ by sharing photos of a happy Lillian with Juliani; that I’m spiting Governor Mutua by sharing the photos. Anafeelishwa kwa nini, si waliwachana? Why do you feel bad when your ex is happy? What is a bro code, my friend? Does the bro code mean that you’re jealous of your ex when they’re happy?

There are those saying the incident at my house was a sympathy-seeking expedition. Sympathy for what? Did I ask anyone for money? Have I asked anyone for money? I know (former Chief Justice) Willy Mutunga has done a public appeal as Willy Mutunga, not as me. But Willy Mutunga understands the struggle I’ve gone through to build that house.

The reason the Directorate of Criminal Investigations sent a bomb squad to the farm was that there were explosives there. Now, listen: the only people who are trained in this country to use explosives are the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit, Recce Squad and the military. Your ordinary police officers don’t have those things. There is no way that attack was carried out by average citizens.

This is yet another warning of death to me. I often joke that for me, death threats are like a change of weather; they just come and go. So, I hibernate for a while then come back.

I’m not scared of death, but I’m scared of my children’s future should I die, because I believe they will be trolled and they’ll be told that I wished to die. I don’t wish to die. Ideally, I would love to be living my own life, enjoying it without being threatened.

But why should I be the one feeling threatened and I’m not a criminal? Does that mean we have actually accepted that criminals have more power than good people? Are we admitting that criminal elements in this country have more power than people who do good?

Man, I fought for Nairobi’s Lang’ata Primary School, whose land was about to be grabbed. I fought for Nakuru’s Naka Primary, where there were allegations of land grabbing. The land was worth Sh1.4 billion; it was not stolen. I’ve trained many activists in this country. I’ve helped make title deeds for all schools a policy for the government because of Lang’ata Primary School.

I have done so much for this country. Why should I die young for saying the truth? (He’s 38). Are we saying that it’s okay for a father of three to die young for saying the truth? Why do you want to make me a martyr? I don’t want to be anybody’s ****ing martyr.

But activism is in my blood and I am helping a lot of people with it. Do you know that I receive more than 100 messages on a typical day? Do you know that even police sometimes want me to help them push a cause or another? I have even got requests for help from some people at State House!

So, you’ll find people asking for help here and there. It can be about rape, murder, abortion —name it. Numerous times, it takes just a phone call for people to get assistance. Like last year, during the lockdown, there was a lady who tried to do an illegal abortion. She was bleeding in the house and the boyfriend contacted me, saying she was in pain and there was nothing he could do. I called someone who took her to the hospital and ensured that she was cleaned up. There are many things that I actually help with that I don’t even put online.

Sometimes a call comes from a tenant who has been told by the landlord that they are going to be kicked out without deposit. I call the landlord, I introduce myself, they get their money.

But you see, I do these in my personal capacity. I don’t work for any organisation.

So, I help a lot and my son has summed it up that people treat me like God: They deny I exist, until they need my help. That’s what my son says, because I have gone out with him at night to bail out people. Many Members of Parliament in this city call me when they have issues that require my intervention.

I left Pawa 254, the organisation I founded, as I geared up to run for Starehe MP in 2017. But my wife, Njeri, still works there. So how do I make my money? Not by selling ugliness to foreigners as some people often say. I’m a photographer. I also teach. I’m teaching at the European University Institute.

I quit politics a few months ago. I resigned from my position from Ukweli Party to be just a member in order to focus on my family. But that is not to say I will never vie for a position, even though I know for sure that I’m not running for any position in next year’s election.

Also, I am fed up with the elective politics of this country because I’m a man of values and principles. I can’t go and buy popularity so I can get elected. Because if I bribe people to get elected, I’m going to become a thief. I don’t want to become a thief. I don’t want to become the people that I really, really despise.

But I feel sorry for the people of Starehe. I feel so sorry for them, and Starehe is the story of Kenya. In the history of this country, this is the worst Parliament Kenya has ever had. We had better parliamentarians when we were a one-party State.

The ‘Seven Bearded Sisters’ were in Parliament in the 1980s. They were Kanu MPs demanding answers from a Kanu president. Imagine today Jubilee members can’t challenge President Uhuru Kenyatta but in the ’80s Kanu MPs were challenging the president. Even under Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, the likes of Martin Shikuku and Waruru Kanja were challenging Mzee Kenyatta. And they were Kanu members!

Nowadays, it’s who can dance better, or who has the best bling, or who has the biggest car, who gets elected. You are electing tongue tied people to go represent you and they have no idea what a policy is.

When you are elected to go to Parliament, it’s not entertainment you’re going for. This thing of electing people for looks — slay queens and kings — shows that even progressively, the IQ of Kenyans has dipped very low.

Proverbs 26: 11 says: ‘As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats its foolishness.’ Kenyans have a way of behaving like dogs. They keep on repeating the same foolishness over and over. We keep voting the same thugs, expecting different results.

Kenyans, don’t be cowards. Read Revelation 21:8, which says: ‘But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur, which is the second death.’

The Bible has put cowards together with murderers and the vile. Don’t fear. In my fearlessness, some people think I’m always this angry person. And I am actually angry. I have so much trauma within myself. I was a witness to the 2007/2008 post-election violence. I have been a witness to many police brutality cases. At The Standard I worked at the crime desk. I used to go and cover those police shootings.

And then, I can see through the lies of politicians because I’ve covered them as a photojournalist, so we know some of their secrets. Then we see them lying to people every day. It makes me very angry. So, yes; I’m angry that my children are growing up in this country. Our children’s present has been stolen, their future is mortgaged. They are born into debt, and right now they can’t even exist.

I’m angry that injustice is a way of life every day. Extra-judicial killings never get resolved and suspects are never apprehended.

We must address political murders. Because if tomorrow I’m killed, it will be a political murder. And they will say ‘no stones will be left unturned’ but they’ll never turn any stone.

Joanna Stutchbury, the Kiambu-based environmentalist, was murdered in July. The President even issued a statement. But have the murderers been arrested? No. That is a big problem that Kenya must address, because it means that people can decide that instead of reason, they will send assassins.

I’ve gone through everything. I’ve been shot, I’ve been beaten. I still even have the wound from last week at Pension Towers in Nairobi. I have so many scars in my body. No one likes scars. Do you think I like being beaten?

My parting shot would be the words of Francis Imbuga, a Kenyan playwright who died in 2012. He once wrote that when the madness of an entire nation disturbs a solitary mind, it is not enough to say the man is mad.

I’m not mad. I just really, really deeply love this country. Let me tell you; the easiest person to get an asylum is me. I can leave this country. But activism comes from a place of compassion, empathy and love. We fight for a better Kenya because we love this country. If we really, really didn’t love this country, we would have joined the eating class. We wouldn’t really care.

And I think the political class would like to push me out because they can’t stand my guts and they can’t stand the truth. But I don’t want to go. I want to be here. And I really don’t have a death wish. My family would never forgive me if I’m killed. They’ll be broken forever.

And for those who don’t have a voter’s card, go get one. It’s still important to choose among the pigs the least-smelling one.

How Mutua’s men looted Covid-19 funds

The Auditor General Nancy Gathungu has unearthed how Machakos County officials misappropriated Sh425 million that was allocated for Covid-19 response in March 2020.

The rogue officials cooked up a scheme which they termed as health staff lunch allowances to loot the public funds meant for combating covid-19.

The scheme saw some 74 ghost healthcare workers getting Sh542,500 as lunch allowances. None of the ‘workers’ is registered with Machakos county human resource master data but were found to be close relatives to Governor Alfred Mutua’s men who plotted the  scheme.

Machakos county health CEC Ancent Kituku is one of the beneficiaries who was overpaid with Sh47,000, Lucas Mwove was paid Sh31, 500 while Jackson Muthini, Naomi Mutie, Morris Aluanga, and Robert Maitha who are also staffers in Machakos were underpaid.

County’s records, however, show that 526 people were paid allowances totaling Sh1.9 million but the payments schedule is missing.

Even some non-medical staffers also received allowances including Stephen Alphonse Kioko who is Governor Alfred Mutua’s driver. Kioko, Muinde Janeffer, and Wambua Jacob Nduki were paid Sh75, 000 in total.

In his usual PR stunts, Governor Alfred Mutua confronted his chief driver was fronted by in a move aimed at distancing himself from the scandal involving his officers.

There were also duplicate payment of allowances made to four staff members with the double payment costing Sh120,000. The rogue officers implicated in the duplicate payments include Muia David  Mutunga Regina,  Mbatha Martin and Musau Michael Musyoka. Musyoka and Muia spent their loot in buying expensive suits.

Some two ward administrators who were also implicated in the scandal were found to have used the same phone number registered in the name of one Festus and Michael Mutuku.

Corruption has crippled many projects in Machakos including 2019 when Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission raided county offices to probe the twin dam scandal involving the outspoken flamboyant governor.

EACC detectives were investigating the Sh89 million deal for the de-silting of Marumba dam and another Sh50 million that came from the Danish International Development Agency.

The detectives were found that no work had commenced by 2019 while the Sh89 million contract was awarded to Waki Clearing and Forwarding Agents on January 5, 2016.
