Chris Brown Freed on Sh868M Bail By London Court

US singer Chris Brown has been freed on bail by a court in London after being charged with inflicting an “unprovoked attack” in a nightclub in 2023.

The Grammy-winning star, who has not yet been asked to enter a plea in the case, is able to begin his world tour next month as planned as part of his bail conditions.

He was arrested last week and later charged with grievous bodily harm over an incident in which he allegedly attacked a music producer with a tequila bottle at the Tape nightclub in London’s Mayfair.

The 36-year-old was not present at Southwark Crown Court for Wednesday’s bail hearing, at which the judge said he must pay a £5m (approximately Sh868 million) security fee to the court.

A security fee is a financial guarantee to ensure a defendant returns to court. Mr Brown could be asked to forfeit the money if he breaches bail conditions.

The musician had been held in custody since being arrested in Salford last Thursday, and was initially refused bail on Friday.

But bail was granted on Wednesday, on the condition that he pay £4m immediately, with a further £1m due in seven days.

His tour is scheduled to start in Amsterdam on 8 June, with stadium and arena dates in Manchester, London, Cardiff, Birmingham and Glasgow later that month and in July.

The two-time Grammy-winner is known for hits like Loyal, Run It and Under the Influence.

His next court date is 20 June, between shows at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium and London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

He must surrender his passport if he is not travelling on tour, Judge Tony Baumgartner said.

Other bail conditions include living at a specific address known to the court, not contacting the alleged victim, not visiting the Tape nightclub, and not applying for international travel documents.

He will appear at court next month with his co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, a 38-year-old who performs under the name HoodyBaby, also from the US.

  • Chris Brown Files Sh65B Suit Against Warner Bros

Chris Brown Files Sh65B Suit Against Warner Bros

US musician Chris Brown has filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. Discovery over a docuseries detailing his alleged history of violence.

The R&B star is accusing Warner Bros. Discovery of moving forward with the film’s release even “after being provided proof that their information was false.”

According to Billboard magazine, the R&B artist who performed at a sold out concert in South Africa in 2024, filed the complaint on Tuesday, January 21, at the Superior Court of Los Angeles.

Brown’s attorneys, led by Levi G. McCathern II and Evan Selik, argue that the Investigation Discovery docuseries, “Chris Brown: A History of Violence”, has been ‘detrimental’ to the singer and is ‘full of lies’.

The suit further alleges that the documentary intentionally sensationalised these false claims to attract viewers and generate more revenue, ultimately harming Brown’s reputation.

“This case is about protecting the truth,” said Brown’s attorney Levi McCathern. “Despite being provided with evidence disproving their claims, the producers of this documentary intentionally promoted false and defamatory information, knowingly disregarding their ethical obligations as journalists.”

Adding, “Since the beginning of October of 2024, Ample LLC and Warner Brothers were put on notice that they were promoting and publishing false information in their pursuit of likes, clicks, downloads and dollars and to the detriment of Chris Brown.”

Additional reporting from Deadline says that the suit further claims the documentary was based on a Jane Doe lawsuit, regarding a reported 2020 incident on a yacht, which they claimed has been ‘discredited over and over’ and she was ‘a perpetrator of intimate partner violence and aggressor herself’.

The lawsuit accuses Warner Bros and company Ample LLC for portraying her as ‘credible’.

The new lawsuit added: “Mr. Brown has never been found guilty of any sex-related crime (rape, sexual battery, sexual assault, etc.) but this documentary states in every available fashion that he is a serial rapist and sexual abuser.”

Attorneys for the award-winning singer, songwriter and producer said that a portion of the $500m (KSh. 64.6B) in damages would be donated to ‘survivors of sexual abuse’.

According to a report done by Entertainment Weekly, the “Please Don’t Judge Me” singer has had a history of legal troubles. These include:

South African Feminist Group Seek To Stop Chris Brown’s Concert Over Rihanna’s Abuse Case

BBC– Chris Brown’s forthcoming concert in South Africa has led to renewed focus on the country’s shocking levels of violence against women, with campaigners saying it sends the wrong message given his history of abuse.

In less than two hours, the Grammy-winner managed to sell out tickets to the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg – the largest stadium in Africa with over 94,000 seats. Demand was so high that a second December date was added.

Despite the massive interest, the R ‘n’ B star has experienced a backlash from people who did not want him to perform due to his violent past.

“When I saw the news that Chris Brown was coming to South Africa, I was shocked and deeply disappointed,” said Sabina Walter, executive director of Women for Change, an organisation that advocates for the rights of women and children in South Africa.

The group has started a petition to stop the US artist from performing. It currently has over 20,000 signatures.

“The petition was started to send a strong message that we will not tolerate the celebration of individuals with a history of violence against women,” said Ms Walter, especially in a country like South Africa.

South Africa has one of the highest rates of femicide and gender-based violence in the world.

A rape is reported in the country roughly every 12 minutes and it is assumed that many more go unrecorded.

“When someone like Chris Brown is given a platform in a country where GBV is at crisis levels, it sends a damaging message – that fame and power outweigh accountability,” said Ms Walters.

The most well-known instance in Chris Brown’s history of abuse is the domestic dispute with singer Rihanna in 2009.

Chris Brown, who was 19 at the time, pleaded guilty to assault and was sentenced to five years probation, community service and domestic violence counselling.

Although Rihanna forgave him and the pair briefly dated again after the incident, Chris Brown has also been accused of violence by other women – and men.

Women for Change says it wants to know how the Department of Home Affairs could grant “a convicted abuser” a visa.

For Ms Walter, the decision is “concerning and indicative of a systemic failure”.

According to South African law, having a previous conviction can result in a visa being denied. But there can be an exception for “good cause” and those are cleared by the Director General of the Department of Home Affairs.

Chris Brown has previously been banned from entering other countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, although he has subsequently gone on to play in the UK and elsewhere in Europe.

But his South African fans are undeterred.

Former University of Cape Town vice-chancellor Prof Mamokgethi Phakeng shared on X that she would be attending the Chris Brown concert.

“I am totally against GBV and condemn it. I believe that those who perpetrate GBV should face the full might of the law without exceptions or leniency.

“But let me be clear, just in case the message didn’t sit well: I am going to attend Brown’s concert if he comes. These two things are not mutually exclusive.

“To suggest that enjoying a concert aligns you with every past action of the artist is, at best, simplistic and, at worst, intellectually dishonest,” she said.

Prof Phakeng explained that “music is bigger than the individual”.

She added that boycotting Chris Brown’s concert wouldn’t end GBV in South Africa.

“Attending the concert does not magically erase our moral stance on GBV.”

Although this is not Chris Brown’s first concert in South Africa, there is huge excitement among his fans.

One said on X: “Chris Brown coming to South Africa??… I’ll take a loan for a meet & greet.”

“Chris Brown you don’t know us yet… but my wife and I will be those two microscopic fans in the stands singing and dancing to every jam!!!!” said another.

Ms Waters said she had even received threats because of her campaign against the US star.

“Supporters of Chris Brown seem ready to defend him at any cost,” she said.

“The criticism we are facing for our petition speaks volumes and actually reveals a deep disconnect in how we, as a society, view violence against women.”

She said that too often people were willing to “excuse abusive” behaviour when it comes to celebrities they admire.

Selective outrage is dangerous because it perpetuates the rape culture and high levels of violence women face every day, said Ms Walters.

President Cyril Ramaphosa accepts that South Africa has a huge problem with gender-based violence and in August, he called on the country’s men to take a stand.

“Our ultimate goal is to end gender-based violence altogether,” he said.

Yet this goal remains a distant one – little has changed five years after he called for action to tackle the country’s “rape crisis”.

This year alone, Women for Change has honoured over 200 women who have lost their lives to femicide.

“This fight isn’t just about this concert. It’s about changing the narrative in South Africa, where abusers are held accountable and where violence against women is never excused, overlooked, or forgotten.”

Demystifying The Lies That Chris Brown Broke A Female Fan’s Phone in Mombasa

The most anticipated performance of the year in Kenya finally came to reality when the international RnB star Chris Brown finally touched in in his private jet for one of the most expensive concerts in the recent times.

As he was making his way out of the airport to his waiting car, like he has been, Chris encountered an excited fan who asked for a selfie with him, but he politely turned her down saying “No baby.”

Unconvinced, the lady identified as Brenda Chepkoech, followed the superstar to his car and photos show the same. Reports emerged in the media moments after Chris left the airport on sections of media especially Nation Media Group that the singer had smashed the fan’s phone.

In an interview with NTV, who by then were under pressure to justify and give proofs that indeed the singer smashed her phone, Brenda says Brown grabbed her phone and threw it away when she was positioning herself to snap a selfie.

While it’s manner less and high scale psycho case to follow him even after turning down selfie request, it’s hard to believe the incident occurred since no footage has emerged to prove the allegations. It’s important to note near to 50 journalists were at the airport to receive the singer and all his steps from the jet to the car were covered. It’s nearly impossible for such a scuffle to go uncaptured with the dozens of cameras that followed him. The impact on her phone which from physical appearance look unscratched also disqualifies her allegations.

Enjoying her 40 seconds of fame, she’s showing the phone to journalists. You can see her phone unscratched

As usual, social media users who were sitting waiting for the pettiest moment to snap on took to Twitter trending #DeportChrisBrown basing their judgments on nothing but hearsay. No evidence to prove that he smashed the phone. This happening months after Koffi Olomide was deported following an assault on one of his dancers. The whole incident was caught on tape, unlike Chris.

Well, Brenda, you’re lucky enough Chris called you baby, and you can go around telling your friends Chris Brown smashed your phone, not a bad thing of you asked me. Learn to let go when one says No. Anyway, lies don’t stay for long; you can’t sustain a lie. It shows. Now let Chris Brown rock Mombasa.
