7 Men Behind Viral ‘Sigor Boys’ Gang Rape Video Arrested

Police in Bomet have arrested seven men believed to be involved in the gang rape of a lady captured in a video that has since gone viral on Kenya’s social media network and caused outrage.

In the video seen by Kenya Insights, several men are seen taking turns on the unnamed lady who despite pleading for mercy but is ignored and not only ends up being raped by all but the whole ordeal captured on camera.

“Following the circulation of pornography video (of an incident) purported to have taken place at Chebanyiny village of Kimaya sub-location (Kongasis civic ward of Chepalungu constituency)…police officers together with the area chief and nyumba kumi elders, conducted an operation in the said area and managed to arrest seven suspects,” a police report on the incident reads.

“The suspects have been placed in police custody for interrogation and miscellaneous application (in court) to enhance further investigations,” the police report states.

Bomet County Police Commander Robinson Ndiwa revealed that the video was recorded in 2023 and released to different social media platforms on April 10, 2024.

Also, Ndiwa said that the woman on the recording had not yet been identified. The group of men has since been named the ‘Sigor Boys’ by users online.

Chepalungu sub-county police commander Phanton Analo confirmed the incident and said two of the suspects had been positively identified.

He said the matter was being investigated by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

Kenyan Law on Circulation of Pornographic Material

The ICT Ministry in 2018 announced the introduction of a law to punish anyone involved in creating, distributing and using children in pornographic content with a jail term of up to 25 years.

In the revised Computer and Cybercrimes Bill 2017, an offender is liable to a 25-year jail sentence or a Ksh20 Million fine.

At the same time in 2021, Defence Cabinet Secretary Adan Duale, then a member of parliament, proposed the amendment of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act to make it illegal for anyone to publish pornography through a computer system.

The bill outlawed the production, distribution, transmission, sale or offer for sale of any pornographic material as well as possession of the same in a computer system.

In the proposed law, pornography was treated as any data, visual or audio, that depicts persons engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

Sossion confirms ditching Raila for Ruto

ODM nominated MP Wilson Sossion is now set to join United Democratic Alliance (UDA) associated with the Deputy President Dr. William Ruto as he prepares to go for Bomet senatorial seat in 2022. Sossion claimed that the village elders who have endorsed his senate bid also directed him to join a party that resonates with the region as he popularizes his candidature.

“They say charity begins at home. Today in my residence, the elders of Motigo sublocation in Bomet Central have decided to endorse my senate aspirations in 2022. The elders have advised me to stick on the prize and avoid backing any politician but to support DP Ruto in his 2022 presidential bid,” Sossion said.

The former KNUT secretary general had hinted at running on Chama Cha Mashinani (CCM) party ticket but has finally made the bold move to join ODM’s arch rival to reap from the influence and support that DP Ruto enjoys in the region.

CCM is owned by former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto, a one time fierce critic of Deputy President William Ruto who also pledged to throw his support behind the country’s second in command’s 2022 bid.

Sossion was nominated to parliament by ODM owner Raila Odinga who is expected to face off with UDA’s Ruto for presidency in 2022. He was however expected to ditch ODM after he was technically ‘kicked out’ of KNUT following a heated battle with the government and Teachers Service Commission but delayed the move that everyone had seen coming.

He is eyeing the Bomet senatorial seat which is currently occupied by Christopher Andrew Langat who has been accusing Governor Hillary Barchok of incompetence. In May 2021, Langat verbally attacked the governor challenging him to sack all health officials at the county over the incompetent manner in which they are running the department.

But Senator Langat has not declared whether he will be going the county’s top seat or defending his senate seat as the outspoken Sossion makes clear his intensions to oust him. Sossion’s move to join Ruto’s party is a big blow to ODM which is desperate for a point man in the region but a boost for DP who has been poaching ODM politicians since 2013.

“I am grateful for the time I have served as nominated MP on ODM ticket. I want to thank my brother Raila Odinga and my colleagues in ODM. Am now seeking UDA ticket to run for Bomet Senatorial seat,” Sossion added.
