‘There’s Nothing Left for Me On This Earth,’ Beryl Odinga’s Daughter Recalls Her Mother’s Heart-breaking Reaction to News of Raila’s Death

Beryl Odinga’s daughter has opened an emotional window into the grief her mother carried after the passing of her brother, the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, revealing that the loss shattered her in ways the family never fully understood until now.

Speaking during Beryl’s memorial service at Consolata Shrine on Wednesday, Chizi Ambala told mourners that her mother’s life changed the moment Raila died.

The two shared a bond so profound that Beryl openly declared she no longer felt she had a purpose on earth.

“When Baba passed, the first words out of my mom’s mouth were: ‘There is nothing for me on this earth anymore,’” she recalled, her voice breaking as she described a relationship that shaped their entire family.

Chizi painted a picture of two siblings whose closeness stretched across decades.

She recounted stories her mother told often, tender memories from the years when a young bachelor Raila lived in Nairobi West.

He would pick up his sister, take her to his apartment, and insist she sleep in his bed while he lay on the hard floor.

“That was the kind of love they had,” she said.

Even after Beryl’s marriage collapsed, Chizi said Raila’s support never wavered. One of the most defining chapters of their journey came when the two moved to Zimbabwe.

Chizi described the country as a second home chosen by both her mother and her uncle, a place where they built a shared life and lasting memories.

Throughout her tribute, she emphasised how present Raila had been in her mother’s life, in childhood and adulthood, in joyful seasons and in painful transitions.

“You often cannot tell how close two people really were until one of them is no longer here,” she said, describing a bond so deep that Beryl openly confessed life had lost its meaning the day Raila died.

Chizi remembered her mother as intelligent, strong willed, warm, and fiercely loving. But she also witnessed how grief aged her, softened her, and finally exhausted her.

“I prayed and prayed, but I now know I was selfish. I wanted her to stay here for me, not realising she had given so much and needed to rest,” she said quietly.

Beryl lived boldly and made her presence felt wherever she went. Now, as she navigates life without her, Chizi takes comfort in believing her mother has reunited with the people she loved most.

She said she is convinced Beryl is now at peace with Raila, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, and Mama Mary.

“I will walk with grief for now, but one day grief will leave,” she said. “Heaven has taken you while my sorrow has engulfed me. I am grieving, yet I am glad you got to live life on your own terms.”

For Chizi, the pain remains fresh, but so does the love, a love she believes will outlast even the heaviest sorrow.

Odinga Family Appeals For Financial Support To Help Cover Funeral Expenses For Beryl

The Odinga family has appealed to Kenyans for financial support to help cover funeral expenses for the late Beryl Achieng Odinga.

In a memorial announcement poster, the memorial service and mini fundraiser are scheduled for today, Sunday, November 30, 2025.

The appeal was shared by Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga, who described her sister Beryl as a warm, generous, and deeply loved family member whose passing had left the family devastated.

The family urged friends, relatives, and well-wishers to join them in honouring Beryl’s life and supporting the family during the difficult period.

According to the announcement, a Holy Mass and mini fundraiser will be held at House No.5, Mwingi Villas, Mwingi Road in Kileleshwa starting at 4pm.

The gathering is expected to bring together friends, colleagues and members of the wider community for an evening of prayer, remembrance and solidarity.

The family also shared details of a dedicated funeral fund, inviting contributions through Paybill number 8002413, with the account name indicated as Your Full Name.

“Together, we extend our heartfelt comfort and solidarity to the family she loved so dearly,” the statement read, noting that the event will serve both as a memorial and an opportunity to support the funeral arrangements.

The family has asked Kenyans of goodwill to stand with them as they prepare to lay her to rest.

“Rest in eternal peace, Beryl,” the tribute read.

Beryl Achieng Odinga, who passed away on November 25, 2025 while undergoing treatment at a Nairobi hospital was the younger sister of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

A distinguished professional and trailblazer, Beryl’s life spanned continents and careers, leaving an indelible mark in both Kenya and Zimbabwe.

Beryl completed her Form Six (‘A’ Levels) studies in December 1972 and went on to pursue a career in teaching and law.

She made history as the first black Town Clerk of Mutare, Zimbabwe’s third-largest city, where she played a pivotal role in post-independence urban development.

After returning to Zimbabwe as a bona fide resident, she continued to rebuild her life and career, later serving as Company Secretary at the Housing Corporation of Zimbabwe.

In 2020, she was appointed by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to the board of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company.

On Sunday,  Raila Odinga Junior, a nephew of the deceased, announced that the family had convened and settled on Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, as the burial site.

He said the decision was made with the guidance and approval of his uncle, Siaya Senator Dr Oburu Oginga.

“With the blessings of my uncle Dr Oburu, we sat down with Jakawuor today to choose the final resting place for my late aunt, Ms Beryl Lilian Achieng Mungwari Odinga,” Raila Jr. posted on his X account.

He added that further details regarding the funeral programme would be shared at a later date.

  • Why Odingas Have Settled To Bury Beryl At Kang’o ka Jaramogi Where Raila Grave Is

Why Odingas Have Settled To Bury Beryl At Kang’o ka Jaramogi Where Raila Grave Is

The Odinga family has chosen to lay Beryl Lilian Achieng Mungwari Odinga to rest at the historic Kang’o ka Jaramogi homestead in Bondo, Siaya County, bringing her final journey full circle to the land where generations of Kenya’s most prominent political dynasty rest.

The decision, announced by Raila Odinga Junior on Saturday, was made with the blessing of Siaya Senator Dr Oburu Oginga, who returned to Kenya from Dubai on November 28 to oversee the funeral arrangements for his sister.

Beryl, who died on November 25 at a Nairobi hospital aged 78, will join her father, Kenya’s first Vice President Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, and her brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who was buried at the same homestead in October following his death in India.

The choice of Kang’o ka Jaramogi as Beryl’s final resting place speaks to the deep family bonds that have held the Odingas together through decades of political struggle and personal loss.

The homestead, whose name derives from the hard kang’o trees that once grew abundantly in the area, has become a sacred ground for the family, housing more than ten graves of Odinga family members.

Among those already buried there are Raila’s mother, Mary Adhiambo, and his son Fidel Castro Odinga, who died in 2015.

The homestead’s layout follows traditional Luo customs, with the houses of Jaramogi’s four wives arranged in a specific order that reflects cultural practices passed down through generations.

The decision to bring Beryl home to Kang’o ka Jaramogi is particularly poignant given her life of quiet dignity away from the political spotlight that defined much of her family’s existence.

While her brothers Oburu and Raila dominated Kenya’s political landscape for decades, Beryl carved out her own distinguished path in law and public administration.

She broke barriers as the first black Town Clerk of Mutare in Zimbabwe and later served as Company Secretary of the Housing Corporation of Zimbabwe. Back in Kenya, she chaired the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company, a position she held until her death.

Beryl was the fourth born in the Odinga family, coming after Oburu, Raila, the late Ngire Omuodo Agola, and Dr Akinyi Wenwa. Her marriage to the late Otieno Ambala, who briefly served as Member of Parliament for Gem before his death in 1985, tied her even more deeply to the political fabric of Nyanza region.

The family’s gathering at Kang’o ka Jaramogi to select Beryl’s burial spot included Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga, who has been actively supporting the funeral arrangements. Raila Junior posted on social media that they sat down with Jakawuor to make the final decision, honouring the traditions that govern such solemn family matters.

Oburu’s return from Dubai, where he had gone for rest and reflection following the emotionally draining period after Raila’s death and the Orange Democratic Movement’s 20th anniversary celebrations, underscores the significance of Beryl’s burial. Upon landing, he went directly to Lee Funeral Home to view his sister’s body, accompanied by party members in a procession that reflected the sombre mood within ODM.

The historic homestead has been open to the public since Raila’s burial, with thousands of Kenyans visiting to pay their respects. The graves of Raila and Jaramogi stand slightly apart from the main family graveyard, about 100 metres away, with a mausoleum over Jaramogi’s grave and plans for one to be built over Raila’s.

For the people of Nyamira village, where Kang’o ka Jaramogi is located, the homestead represents more than just a burial ground. It is a living monument to a family that shaped Kenya’s democratic journey, from Jaramogi’s fight for independence to Raila’s decades-long struggle for constitutional reforms and multiparty democracy.

Local residents recall how Jaramogi settled the area after families migrated from the shores of Lake Victoria due to tsetse fly infestation. With government help, they cleared the bushes and established homes where Jaramogi raised his children with his four wives, instilling in them the values of education and service that would define the family’s legacy.

Beryl’s homecoming to Kang’o ka Jaramogi thus represents not just a burial decision, but a reaffirmation of family unity and the enduring pull of ancestral land. Despite her long illness and years spent in and out of hospital, she will return to rest among the kang’o trees that gave the homestead its name, surrounded by the family members who went before her.

The funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days, but the choice of burial site has already been made. Beryl Odinga will lie at Kang’o ka Jaramogi, where the soil holds the bones of Kenya’s political aristocracy and where the family’s story continues to unfold, one generation at a time.

During a birthday celebration for Oburu Odinga in October 2023, Beryl shared that she had been classmates with prominent Kenyan leaders, including former Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o.

Beryl married Otieno Ambala in 1974, an aspiring legislator who later passed away from a heart attack in 1985 while at Kodiaga Prison.

Raila’s 2014 biography, The Flame of Freedom, recounts how Beryl endured an abusive marriage, which eventually led her to flee Kenya in the 1980s with her children.

Seeking refuge in Zimbabwe, she was granted asylum and began working with the Ministry of Local Government, where she helped shape urban planning policy in the newly independent nation.

Her most notable contributions include designing the Chitungwiza Town planning policy, later implemented during her tenure as Town Planning Director at Chitungwiza Town Council (CTC).

Beryl’s work modernised the town’s urban framework, curbing informal peri-urban settlements and influencing the structure of the city for decades.

Raila Odinga’s Younger Sister Beryl Achieng Dies

Nairobi, November 25, 2025 – The Odinga family is in mourning once again. Beryl Achieng Odinga, younger sister to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, passed away on Tuesday morning at Nairobi West Hospital after a prolonged illness.

The news was announced by Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga Odinga and Kisumu Woman Representative Ruth Odinga through separate social media posts.

“It is with heavy hearts, yet in humble acceptance of God’s will, that we announce the sudden passing of Beryl Achieng Odinga, my sister,” wrote Dr. Oburu. Ruth Odinga echoed the same message, describing her sister as a devoted mother and a pillar of the family.

Beryl was the daughter of Kenya’s first Vice President, the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, and Mama Mary Ajuma Oginga. She is survived by three children: Ami Auma, Chizi, and Taurai.

Unlike her prominent brothers Raila and Oburu, who spent decades in the public eye, Beryl lived a private life away from politics.

She rarely appeared in the media and maintained a low profile even during major family and national events.

Her death comes barely six weeks after the passing of Raila Odinga on October 15, 2025, while undergoing treatment in India.

Sources close to the family revealed that Beryl had also been receiving medical care in India earlier this year and was too ill to return home for her brother’s funeral in Bondo last month.

The double tragedy has deeply shaken the Odinga family and their supporters across the country.

Messages of condolence have poured in from political leaders, ordinary Kenyans, and longtime allies of the family.

Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, a close associate of the Odingas, described Beryl as a warm and gracious woman who always welcomed visitors with kindness.

Several leaders from the Azimio coalition also sent messages of comfort to the family.

Funeral arrangements are underway, with the body expected to be moved to the family home in Bondo, Siaya County, in the coming days.

A memorial service is likely to be held in Nairobi before burial in Bondo, following Luo customs and family tradition.

The Odinga family has requested privacy as they grieve and finalize burial plans.

May Beryl Achieng Odinga rest in eternal peace.
