Why Mombasa Public Beaches Will Be Closed Today

Governor Nassir orders two-day closure following meteorological warning of dangerous weather conditions

Mombasa’s public beaches remain off-limits today as authorities implement emergency safety measures following severe weather warnings from the Kenya Meteorological Department.

Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir announced the unprecedented closure yesterday evening, affecting all public beaches in the coastal county for Saturday and Sunday, with the possibility of extending the restriction through Monday if conditions don’t improve.

The decision came after Mombasa’s Disaster Preparedness Committee convened an emergency meeting in response to Met Department alerts warning of strong winds and dangerous ocean waves reaching heights of up to 2.5 meters along the coast.

“We’ve resolved to close public beaches for two days, suspend ocean activities, and halt all construction work for public safety. Daily updates will be shared,” Governor Nassir stated during a media briefing on Friday.

    Severe weather alert

The Kenya Meteorological Department issued its advisory Friday, warning residents across 15 counties—including the entire coastal region—to prepare for destructive wind conditions over the next three days.

Wind speeds, which began Friday at over 30 knots (15.4 m/s), are expected to intensify significantly today, reaching more than 35 knots (18.0 m/s) before gradually subsiding to 25 knots by Monday.

The affected areas extend beyond the coast to include southeastern lowlands and northwestern regions, with counties such as Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, and Taita Taveta all under the weather warning.

Governor Nassir confirmed that all fishermen have been notified of the restrictions, while construction activities have been suspended to prevent weather-related accidents.

The Kenya Wildlife Service has been enlisted to help enforce the beach closures, ensuring no unauthorized access to dangerous coastal areas during the severe weather period.

Coastal counties Tana River, Kwale, and Kilifi face similar warnings about large ocean waves, though Mombasa appears to be taking the most proactive approach with its complete beach closure.

The closure marks the first time many residents can recall beaches being shuttered due to weather conditions, with some social media users expressing surprise at the unprecedented measure while others praised the governor’s cautious approach to public safety.

Local officials emphasize that the restrictions will be evaluated daily, with the possibility of reopening beaches Monday if meteorological conditions improve sufficiently.

  • Detectives Nab Key Suspect In Mombasa Blogger’s Sodomy Case While Trying To Flee The Country

Detectives Nab Key Suspect In Mombasa Blogger’s Sodomy Case While Trying To Flee The Country

A man who police describe as a main suspect in the September 12 abduction and subsequent sexual harassment of blogger Bruce John Khajira aka Chawa – 001 was arrested at the Lunga Lunga border while trying to flee to Tanzania.

Detectives said the suspect Omar Ali Mohamed known by his moniker as Nyanya has been on the run for months.

His arrest Thursday was a culmination of days and nights of vigilance by duty-bound detectives working jointly with the Immigration Department, who were privy to the plans by the masterminds to sneak out of the country all those implicated in the perversion.

In the painstaking investigation conducted by a select team of detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Nyanya was forensically placed at both the primary and secondary scenes of the incident.

This was besides being in constant communication with other known perpetrators before, during and after the incident.

Notably, detectives identified the motor vehicle as make Nissan Note grey in colour, in which the victim was bundled from his house to the scene.

The vehicle had been hired by Nyanya on August 20, 2024, and returned on September 12 in the evening after the fiendish gang completed their hellish mission.

The car has since been intercepted and detained.

Crime researchers were also able to forensically place the said car at the primary scene (where the victim was sexually assaulted) at a County Government of Mombasa construction site within the Bonje Area for about two hours, before revving to Mwakirunge area where the victim was dumped.

Several accomplices have since been identified and are holing up in various parts of the country. The DCI calls upon them to surrender at any police station or DCI offices.

Four people have already been charged with abduction, gang rape and assault of the blogger.

They are Esther Muthoni John, alias Totoo, and Violet Adera, alias Vayoo, Abdul Hassan Athman, alias Sindimba, and Haji Babu Ndau Mohamed, alias Achkobe or Jay.

Mombasa County Lands Executive Hussein Mohamed was granted a Sh1 million anticipatory bond with strict conditions over the issue.

This is as he waits to know whether he will be charged over the matter or not.

The court was informed that the DCI had completed its investigation into Hussein’s alleged role in cyber-harassment linked to the abduction and gang rape of the blogger and has forwarded the file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review and further action.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has also provided a statement to the police regarding the heinous matter.

  • Abdulswamad, Mother Accused Of Blogger’s Rape

Abdulswamad, Mother Accused Of Blogger’s Rape

Mombasa governor Abdulswamad Nassir, alongside his mother and several top county officials, faces possible arrest over allegations of facilitating the gang rape of a local blogger.

This follows claims made by the blogger Bruce John alias “Chawa 001” who accused individuals connected to the governor of abducting and assaulting him.

In a sworn affidavit presented to Shanzu Resident Magistrate Robert Mbogo, Police Corporal Irene Karuga of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detailed the ongoing investigation.

From left Haji Babu Ndau Mohammed, Abdul Hassan,Esther Muthoni alias Totoos, Violet Adera alias Vyaoo before the Shanzu law court the suspects are facing several charges among them abduction, gang rape, conspiracy to commit a felony and assault.

According to Karuga, efforts to apprehend additional suspects are underway, including Nassir, his mother, and other senior high-ranking county officials.
Karuga told the court that her investigation involves serious criminal offences, including abduction (contrary to Section 259 of the Penal Code), gang rape, and conspiracy to commit a felony. The crimes, she alleges, are among other offences allegedly facilitated by the county boss and his associates.

“The complaint was filed by an online blogger known for his critical posts on Mombasa County politics. He alleges that he was abducted by individuals he recognised after a post he had made, and he ended up being sodomised and later dumped in areas of Mwakirunge while fighting for his life,” Karuga stated.
The court heard that intelligence gathered by detectives suggests that Nassir and his allies may have been aiding some of the suspects to evade arrest.

    First arrest

“We have managed to establish that there has been communication that has been going on following the first arrest, where it is reported that there were more than fifteen suspects involved; hence, releasing them will interfere with the on-going investigations,” she informed the court.

She argued that releasing the suspects on bond could not only interfere with the investigations but also endanger public safety, given the high-profile nature of the case. “The incident is of public interest, and releasing the respondents would pose a threat to their own lives,” she told the magistrate.

    Forensic procedure

Karuga further informed the court that DNA analysis of the suspects was pending and releasing them would hinder crucial forensic procedures necessary to compare DNA samples with those collected from the victim.

She recounted the difficulties law enforcement agents had faced in apprehending the four suspects who appeared in court, namely Abdul Hassan, Haji Babu Ndau, Esther Muthoni (alias Totoos), and Violet Adera (alias Vyaoo), due to interference from county officials.

  • Alarm Over Rise Of Juvenile Delinquency In Mombasa

Alarm Over Rise Of Juvenile Delinquency In Mombasa

Mombasa leaders have intensified calls for parents to seriously take responsibility for their children’s behaviours in the wake of a resurgence of juvenile crimes in Kisauni Sub-County.

County Commissioner (CC) Mohamed Nur said a security agencies had mobilized a mop up in Kisauni Sub-County to weed out the youthful criminals who have been terrorizing residents with impunity

“Yesterday alone, we arrested 23 people some are young people between 16 and 17 years engaging in crime. We will extend the operation to Likoni and Jomvu sub-counties to weed out criminals,” said Nur.

He decried that it was appalling to see people losing their phones or going to the mosque being attacked. “We won’t allow that trend to go in Mombasa,” he said.

Parents were urged to know their children’s whereabouts during school holidays and not to allow them to loiter around.

The County Commissioner (CC) Mohamed Nur was speaking after Eid-ul-Fitr Prayers at the Ronald Ngala grounds, he stated that in conjunction with the County Government, they will close down mugukaa chewing dens which are breeding grounds for criminals and children to stay there overnight.

“We want children at dusk to be at home, in the dens they acquire indecorous behaviour. We have finished Ramadhan we will close all the dens,” stated CC Nur.

In the renewed fight against Alcohol and Drug Abuse, the CC revealed that they have so far closed 167 bars, got heroin 160 sachets, and 30,000 litres of bootleg liquor was destroyed.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir echoed the County Commissioner’s sentiments saying there is no justification for anyone to engage in crimes and a child between 17 years and 20 years is supposed to be in school and shouldn’t use the lack of jobs as an excuse.

“Parents and community must take responsibility. Parents should also be interrogated about their children’s behaviour. Data shows that whenever schools are on crime rates are usually low but when they are closed crime surges. It is not right,” said Governor Nassir.

He warned children engaging in crimes that when they are apprehended their crime cases are being recorded and no employer will employ them.

Chief Kadhi Sheikh Abdulhalim Hussein congratulated the Muslim faithful for cooperating with the security to ensure there was peace in Ramadhan epoch.

  • Nassir Sues Chebukati

    Nassir Sues Chebukati

Mombasa ODM party gubernatorial candidate Abdulswamad Nassir has moved to court to compel the electoral body IEBC to conduct the governor elections on Tuesday as earlier announced.

Nassir who was expected to file a petition Thursday at 9.30 am said there was no reason to postpone the election, saying the law is very clear about postponing the election.

IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati on Wednesday evening postponed the gubernatorial elections for Mombasa and Kakamega indefinitely citing frustrations and intimidations of his officials.

The elections were to take place on August 23 after they were cancelled on August 9 due to technicalities.

In a statement, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati attributes the move to intimidation of IEBC staff. Chebukati has also postponed the elections of Member of National Assembly for Kitui Rural Constituency in Kitui County, Kacheliba Constituency and Pokot South Constituency in West Pokot County as well as Rongai Constituency in Nakuru County.

Also postponed are elections of Member of County Assembly Ward in Nyaki West in North Imenti Constituency of Meru County and Kwa Njenga in Embakasi South Constituency in Nairobi County.

The IEBC chair regretted the chaos that erupted during the announcement of the Presidential results which left some commissioners nursing injuries.

“During the announcement of the presidential results, the Chairman Wafula Chebukati, Commissioners Prof. Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu, and CS/CEO Marjan H. Marjan were physically attacked, assaulted, and injured by persons in the company of certain political leaders. We call for the arrest and prosecution of these assailants regardless of their political affiliation” he said.

While calling for the arrest of the perpetrators, Chebukati said his staff were fearing for their lives as such could not report for duty.

“The Commission is concerned that some of its critical staff who objectively and impartially performed their duties at the National Tallying Centre are being intimidated and harassed through profiling and/or arbitrary arrests. This has instilled fear within the staff, who are now unable to report to the office for duty. This harassment must stop forthwith” he stated.

“In view of the prevailing circumstances, the Commission has postponed the by-elections slated for 23rd August 2022, to a date to be announced through a gazette notice” he announced.

The United Democratic Alliance – UDA Mombasa Gubernatorial candidate Hassan Omar and his Deputy Selina Maitha are set to address a presser on the same at the Party’s Headquarters, The Hustler Centre, Nyali.

  • Mike Sonko, A Spent Cartridge Bulldozed By Kalonzo In His Proxy Fight With Raila

Mike Sonko, A Spent Cartridge Bulldozed By Kalonzo In His Proxy Fight With Raila

Mike Sonko’s glory days are over, let’s start with that. In an afterthought move, Wiper Movement leader and presumed Ukambani leader Kalonzo Musyoka pulled Mike Sonko out of the court corridors to contest for Mombasa gubernatorial position in his sinister way to derail, blackmail and fight Azimio’s candidate Raila Odinga.

Sonko of today is not that of 2018 who wowed the Nairobian electorates and got more votes than any other candidate in the same position in the country.

At the time, many perceived him as incorruptible, a clean template politician who couldn’t touch a coin against the will and to the advantage of the wananchi and as wisemen said, give a man power, money and know his characters, Mike Sonko turned out to be the devil who was hiding in plain sight.

The embattled former Nairobi Governor has not only had to face serious fraud, corruption accusations still in court, he was also faced with terrorism charges that saw him being put under custody of the dreaded anti terror police unit.

At one point, Sonko had President Uhuru on speed dial, but they’d later break up as the president kept a safe distance from the ex-governor after intelligence sources singled him out as spiked and disastrous. Sonko would at one point launch personal attacks on the president eventually leading to his arrest and ouster. Sonko willingly gave up the functions of the county government to NMS after it became imminent that he was incompetent and not up to the task.

After he was eventually impeached by both the Nairobi County assembly and the Senate over corruption allegations, Sonko claimed that he was forced to transfer power under duress in Statehouse, sensationally saying that he was drunk while doing so. Investigations by both EACC, County Government and Senate found the ex-governor incompetent to hold public office.

Sonko and his puppet master Kalonzo.

Kalonzo Musyoka who has been subtly blackmailing Raila Odinga to appoint him as his running mate with the aim of taking over from him in 2027 as Mr Odinga wants to go for one term, decided to frustrate Odinga’s consolidation of his support base.

In Nairobi, Kalonzo against the Azimio’s MoU of having a Jubilee candidate for the governor and ODM for DG, fronted his own candidate a Prof Kaloki whom again he used to blackmail ODM by fronting him to deputize Jubilee’s Richard Ngatia.

After negotiations, leading contender Tim Wanyonyi of ODM stepped aside in favor of Polycarp Igathe the candidate that Jubilee fronted. Again, Kalonzo went ahead with his push and insisted a Kamba in this case Prof Kaloki was to deputize, he had his way.

In Mombasa, Kalonzo a supposed reformist has brought a ‘garbage’ to lead the county as the preferred Wiper candidate, Sonko who’s marred with all manner of scandals has been given a direct ticket by Wiper in a cunning move that has been read by many experts as yet another blackmail move by Mr Kalonzo staging a proxy war against Mr Odinga.

Mombasa is seen as an ODM stronghold with its candidate Abdulswamad Nassir seen to be a leading candidate according to latest opinion polls. Kalonzo is banking on the Kamba votes in Mombasa together with the Mijikenda’s Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo votes to spoil the broth for ODM and Raila.

In March, the US government sanctioned Mike Sonko banning him from visiting the U.S. together with his family due to his involvement in what they term as ‘significant corruption’.

According to Ned Price, the department’s spokesperson, the US has impeccable information that while in office, Governor Sonko solicited bribes and kickbacks in exchange for awarding government contracts to his associates.  “His actions undermined the rule of law and the public’s faith in Kenya’s democratic institutions and public processes.” The statement says.

He is alleged to have embezzled more than 300 million shillings partly through the irregular awarding of contracts to friends’ companies that are said to have wired money to his personal accounts after receiving their payments from Nairobi county.

He was also recently accused of recruiting and arming a militia, procuring military clothing associated with terrorist groups and financing terrorist activities.

Being a tourist destination for many international guests, many are asking us this the profile for a governor they want for their city? One who’s sanctioned and limited to travels abroad to bring in investors and other investments?

Why is Kalonzo using Mombasa as a dumping site for rejected leaders as Sonko? It can only mean one thing he thinks and wishes for Mombasa. Why didn’t Kalonzo front Sonko in any of the counties in Ukambani? The answer is open.

Sonko as I started, is a sober cartridge, his glory days are gone, the once unruly Sonko is no more, he’s been turned into a puppet of Kalonzo, turn left, Sonko turns left.

  • Abide By My Conditions Or I Bolt Out, Shahbal Gives ODM Notice

Abide By My Conditions Or I Bolt Out, Shahbal Gives ODM Notice

Being an ODM’s stronghold, the region’s political bigwigs are engaged in high voltage fights that according to analysts, threatens to break the strings holding the Raila Odinga’s led party.

Mombasa governor ticket has come into focus more so much than any other. Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir who’s been leading in recent opinion polls is not having his smooth way as his arch rival and businessman Suleiman Shahbal  engages his arsenal in ensuring the legislator doesn’t overrun him.

Shabhal is trying to make a third stab on the county’s top seat. Branded by critics as a party hopper, Shahbal made his first attempt and was defeated in 2013 by the incumbent Governor Hassan Joho when he contested through Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper Party.

In 2017, Shahbal ran on a Jubilee Party ticket, but still lost to Joho for a second time. At the time, Joho resoundingly thrashed Shahbal with 221,363 votes against his 69,429.

Last year, Shahbal returned to ODM from Jubilee and is now battling with Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir for the ODM ticket in the governor’s race.

On Thursday, the ODM National Elections Board brought together the contestants from Mombasa to a meeting held at Emory Hotel in a bid to arrive  at a consensus on the best candidate to front for the party but all didn’t end well.

During the meeting, other contestants didn’t agree with opinion polls results that the party was relying on for the best bet with the disgruntled revolting that they don’t trust the process. According to documents availed to our desk, Abdulswamad was favored in all polls as the leading candidate while his opponents who were trailing at a distant, thrashed the results as being fake and untrustworthy.

The Orange party’s National Executive Council in February endorsed four ways of picking aspirants, which also received the backing of the National Delegates Congress.

The NDC approved the use of consensus, direct nomination, identification of candidates through voting by delegates and universal suffrage, through which ODM members would vote for their preferred candidate.

However, the NEC noted they favour consensus while direct nomination would be the last resort.

Raila is on record stating that parties affiliated with the Azimio la Umoja Movement will have to sacrifice their ambitions for the good of the budding coalition.

ODM Chairman, John Mbadi recently shelved his Homa Bay’s gubernatorial ambitions for Gladys Wanga citing calls by his party leader Raila Odinga to help in his national agenda mission.

”I discussed with my party leader and it became apparent that if the national chairman can sacrifice his ambition because of leadership of women, then so be it. I had a huge following in the county. If you look at the anger on the ground, you can clearly see I had captured the imagination of the people.” Mbadi is quoted in a media publication.

“I have supported my party leader since1992 and he told me that he wants to work with me at the national level. I’m happy that I took the risk for the sake of Raila. This will be the first time since 2007 that I will not seek an elective seat.”

The Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate said coalition partners would try to strike a balance in picking candidates for various seats in certain regions.

According to intelligence briefs in the holds of Kenya Insights, ODM had to postpone the party primaries for Mombasa and Kilifi counties.

The party in a statement on Saturday said the move is meant to enable the conclusion of ongoing consultations and consensus-building.

The party primaries for Kilifi and Mombasa were scheduled to take place next week on April 5 and April 6 respectively.

In Kilifi County, Devolution Chief Administrative Secretary Gideon Mung’aro and Deputy Governor Gideon Saburi are also battling for the ODM ticket.

Reports also indicate that Kenya’s High Commissioner to Tanzania Dan Kazungu who is also the former Malindi MP is also eyeing the Kilifi Governor seat through the ODM party.

In Mombasa, the fierce battle between the front contenders has threatened to split the party. While the party insists the choice of candidate should be informed by internal opinion polls amongst other internally laid structures, Shahbal who’s coming second after Nassir in both polls, has rejected the results terming them untrustworthy. In remedy, the party’s top organs have recommended a third, last and determinant poll to square out the stalemate but insiders tell our writer that the businessman is not going to hear none of it. “He’s made it clear that he’s either his way or no way,” a source close to the negotiations says.

”How can a national party be held hostage by interests of an individual? The party has structures and policies laid out that are not only binding to Mombasa but all the counties, why would the part bend its tail for one person? As Saitoti once said, there comes a time when the interests of a nation  supersedes that of an individual.” A top ranking party official told this publication.

”We’re determined to arrive at an equal footing with both parties, we’re one family, squabbles are bound to happen. We’re still considering all options on the table and we’ve not exhausted anything. Nobody should feel unwanted, no one should feel too big or too small. We will square this out.” A senior source told Kenya Insights.

”We’re demanding nothing other than a direct ticket,” a close source cites Shahbal.

By the time of going on air, Abdulswamad’s team said they’re open for talks, Shahbal’s said they’re not taking anything other than universal suffrage and if not, they’ll bolt out, “we don’t trust ODM at this point and we have plenty of options” a Shahbal’s senior official told us.

  • Abdulswamad Set To Bag Mombasa ODM Ticket For Governor

Abdulswamad Set To Bag Mombasa ODM Ticket For Governor

As political temperatures continue to heat up in the country ahead of national primaries, numbers continue to separate the bulls. Mombasa, one of the hottest grounds for ODM being a stronghold, has attracted a lot of attention and tension equally.

ODM advisory board had said in earlier communications advised that they’d avoid m nominations in areas perceived to be volatile as a way of subverting violence. The party through it’s National Elections Board commissioned several opinion polls that were conducted between different months to help in arriving at the most suitable and popular candidate in hot areas and then bring together contestants to break a deal within themselves.

It’s this poll that recently brokered the deal between Homa Bay contestants who unanimously endorsed Hon Wanga handing her a direct ticket.

A similar case was seen in UDA when Malala and Khalwale came to common deal after talks for the Kakamega seats as it became clear through polls that Malala was ranking ahead of Khalwale for the gubernatorial seat.

At a meeting with ODM party’s top brass  amongst them John Mbadi, Junet Mohammed, Catherine Muma, Mombasa gubernatorial candidates including Abdulswamad Nasir, Suleiman Shabal and other contestants, were holed up at Emory Hotel on Thursday in a bid to broker a deal looking at all the factors to choose on the most suitable candidate. This was the party’s idea to avoid imminent violence in the nominations.

Sources present in the meeting confided to our writer that the choice of suitable candidate for the ticket was to be informed by opinion polls which were conducted by the national elections board at different times in the country.

In all the polls presented by the board to the aspirants, Abdulswamad was ahead of his main rival Shahbal. Together with other dissatisfied candidates present in the meeting, Shahbal  protested saying they couldn’t trust the polls.

Shahbal in protest said the race was too close to call. However, the margin of the polls seen by Kenya Insights shows otherwise as the Mvita MP commands a wider lead in all the polls as Shahbal comes second. The other option on the table that Shahbal refused to give a chance to is consensus amongst the contestants. He’s insisting on universal suffrage which the party understands its dangers and trying to talk all contestants in flagged areas out of.

There have been two ugly incidences of violence have played out in the recent past, one before Raila during an Azimio rally and another at Tononoka grounds during International Women’s Day, supporters of Shahbal and Nasir’s clashed giving a clear indication of what would become.

The party offered to conduct another poll for final clarity and for satisfaction of other dissatisfied aspirants. This was also opposed by some.

Another person present in the meeting tell this writer that Shahbal in protest said “I don’t trust ODM” a statement that left party officials agitated.

In the latest update, ODM’s Elections Board had to postpone party primaries in Nakuru County amid violence fears.

The consensus stalemate is not only a headache for the party in Mombasa, in Kisumu, former East African Community chief administrative secretary Ken Obura is playing the hardball on consensus with the incumbent Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o for the county’s top seat.

Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathews Owili called on the ODM National Elections Board to consider issuing Prof Nyong’o a direct ticket to save resources for Mr Odinga’s presidential campaigns.

“We should not conduct party primaries to please an individual at the expense of the bigger goal of ensuring Mr Odinga’s victory,” he said on Wednesday.

    Opinion poll

Citing an opinion poll result, Dr Owili argued that there is every indication that Governor Nyong’o will triumph over his sole competitor.

“The latest poll indicates that Governor Nyong’o garnered 90 per cent against 5 per cent (for) his sole challenger,” he said.

He called on Mr Odinga’s supporters to rally behind his fifth presidential bid.

  • New Poll Ranks Raila, Abdullswamad Ahead In Mombasa

New Poll Ranks Raila, Abdullswamad Ahead In Mombasa

If Kenyans went to the polls today, Azimio la Umoja presidential aspirant Raila Odinga will win a majority of the votes in Mombasa County.

This is according to the latest findings of a poll conducted by Infotrak Research and Consulting.

In the poll conducted from 9th to 12th March 2022, the firm noted that Raila still commands huge support in the coastal county with 52 percent support compared to his fiercest political rival Deputy President William Ruto whose support currently stands at 29 percent.

The same trend follows the popularity of their political parties and political coalitions.

According to the poll sponsored by Haki Africa, Azimio la Umoja enjoys 51 percent support in the county while Kenya Kwanza Alliance has the backing of 29 percent of the county voters.

The Raila Odinga-led Orange Democratic Movement is still the party of choice with 46 percent support while Ruto’s UDA now has 24 percent support in the county.

Even though Raila’s support is not as big as it was in previous general elections, the poll indicates the former Prime Minister is still the most popular politician in the area.

In the meantime, Mvita lawmaker Abdullswamad Sharrif Nassir is ahead of the pack in the race to succeed Ali Hassan Joho as the Governor of Mombasa.

Infotrak survey shows that Nassir is most popular in Mombasa with 48% support, followed by Businessman Suleiman Shabhal with 18% while former Senator and UDA member Omar Hassan is third with 5% support.

  • Mijikenda Factor In Joho Succession Race

Mijikenda Factor In Joho Succession Race

Mombasa deputy governor Dr. William Kingi is enjoying a growing popularity as the race to succeed governor Hassan Joho intensifies, exactly one year to the next year’s general election. DG Kingi had been trashed as an underdog in the race but the backing from his Mijikenda community has boosted his candidature.

The Mijikenda community is simply putting it that it is now their turn to occupy the lucrative seat which has been held by Joho who comes from a minority Arab extract for the past nine years.

Joho was first deputized by Hazel Katana in his first term but he later picked Kingi in 2017, both are from the Mijikenda community who are the majority voters at the coast.

Mombasa DG William Kingi and Governor Hassan Joho [p/courtesy]
But smaller tribes have taken advantage of disunity and poverty among the Mijikenda to chest thump for plum positions. What still remains clear is that ODM party still stands a chance of producing the next governor of Mombasa county but the candidate may be different from the usual faces like Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir or businessman Suleiman Shahbal who are eyeing the ODM ticket.

Even the ODM party leader Raila Odinga who has been secretly pushing for the moneyed Shahbal has read the mood on the ground and assured Kingi of free and fair party nominations.

This comes after goons funded by Shahbal booed the Mombasa DG in attempts to prevent him from delivering his speech during a function hosted by Joho and graced by ODM leader at Coast General & Referral hospital.

Flip flopping Shahbal had initially dismissed Kingi as a weak candidate but with a strong Mijikenda candidate emerging,  even picking a DG from the community will not do much to sway voters to his side. And with Joho backing Nassir as his preferred successor, Shahbal is also secretly engaging Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka as another alternative if things fail to work in ODM where he is seen as a stranger.

  • How long will flip-flopping Shahbal stay in ODM?

How long will flip-flopping Shahbal stay in ODM?

The entry of businessman Suleiman Shahbal in ODM party has angered politicians lining up to succeed the outgoing governor Hassan Joho. Shahbal who ran on a Jubilee party in 2017 and lost to Joho has ‘bought off’ the ODM party leader Raila Odinga who is behind his strange entry into the orange party.

His recent defection from Jubilee to ODM has now triggered a heated fight for the party’s ticket for Mombasa gubernatorial contest as supporters of Deputy Governor William Kingi and Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir express their dissatisfaction.

Both Kingi and Nassir are interested in succeeding Joho in 2022 with Nassir challenging Shahbal to publicly apologize to ODM, its leadership and supporters for the past insults.

“I challenge Shahbal to first apologise to Raila and Joho for his past utterances because he is known for flip-flopping parties” Nassir told the media.

But defection has been the norm for Mr Shahbal since the beginning of his politics. Just before the 2013 general elections, the businessman defected from ODM to UDF and then to Wiper party all in less than a month.

He had also expressed his confusion in 2020 when he attended a Wiper party office opening function where Kalonzo Musyoka introduced him as the sole party candidate for the Mombasa gubernatorial in next year’s polls but a week later, the flip-flopping politician was seen drumming up support for the ODM candidate in Msambweni parliamentary by-election.

But going with the ODM tradition and its messy nominations Shahbal will be dealt a big political blow when the battle for ODM ticket gets to the nominations stage.  Deep rooted insiders like Nassir will ensure he is beaten.

Nassir is a longtime loyalist and preferred choice of the outgoing Joho who doubles up as ODM party’s deputy leader with reliable influence connection with financiers.

Until his defection, Shahbal was Jubilee Party’s key point-man in Mombasa but has been joining Odinga’s entourage at the coast before he announcing his dream to vie for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket.

Mbogo breathing hot air as he enters Mombasa gubernatorial race

The race to succeed Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho is shaping up to be a three horse race after Kisuani Mp Ali Mbogo Menza made clear his intentions to face Kisauni Mp Abdulswamad Nassir and businessman Suleiman Shahbal who are still hanging around for Joho endorsement.

Mbogo who was elected on a Wiper party ticket is relying on his development record in Kisauni constituency since his election in 2017  when he beat ODM’s Rashid Bedzimba.

He has built five new schools within three and a half years including Concordia Secondary School, Karisa Maitha Secondary School, Mwembelegeza Secondary School, Mwembelegeza Primary School and , Magogoni Primary School. He also boasts of buying school buses buses for Mwakirunge Secondary School and Hassan Joho Girls’ School.

But the expected tarmacking of two key roads linking Mombasa and Kaloleni through Mwakirunge area which are of great economic importance to the residents of Kilifi and Mombasa counties is expected to up his ratings.

He has also ensured that over 3,600 title deeds are issued in Kisauni with surveyors still camping on the ground as he challenges his opponents to be of importance to the residents of Mombasa before asking for votes.

Mbogo challenged Shahbal to assist the residents of Mombasa instead of boasting of international links during campaigns and doing nothing with those connections to change the lives of Mombasa residents.

He added that Shahbal is not empowering women and the youth but only chasing business opportunities like the construction of low cost housing he is undertaking in Buxton. Mbogo argues that the project is a classic case of conflict of interests.

“ Shahbal won the tender to do the project and is busy trying to become the governor. He should either remain a businessman or a politician and stop confusing the residents” Mbogo said.

The Kisauni legislator also accused Shahbal of building Kiluwa Resort on a piece of land he grabbed from African Safari Club.

He then went on to poke holes on the development record of Mvita Mp Abdulswamad whom he accused of aspiring to be a governor when he can’t construct a single classroom in his constituency since he was elected in 2013.

Hon. Nasir has also been under criticism for using his ‘skills mtaani’ programme to siphon CDF funds through Istiqama Driving School and Istiqama Academy which belong to his sister.

An inspection by a special funds accounts committee in December 2020 also uncovered that the implementation status as captured in the audit reports were about projects that never existed on the ground.

Nassir’s ghost projects include the the construction of Kenya Medical Training College at a fabricated cost of Sh4.5 million and construction of a police booth at Sh2.4 million, construction of Ganjoni Primary School toilets at Sh2 million and renovation of a library at Serani Primary School at a cost of Sh1.6 million.

But Mbogo is also basing his bid on the population of Kisauni Constituency which is the largest in Mombasa County. He is also a native, meaning his candidature is salable to a majority of the residents unlike his opponents who are from the minority Arab extract.

The Mombasa top seat will fall vacant in August 2022 when the incumbent retires with reports indicating that Joho might also go for Kisauni parliamentary seat and bargain for a ministerial position in case BBI Bill is adopted.

The battle to succeed Joho is expected to be titanic as aspirants are expected to employ various strategies to woo the more than 500,000 voters. Former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar and deputy governor William Kingi have also declared interests but analysts  are pointing that candidates’ financial muscle, upcountry vote support and party affiliations will play a key role.
