The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has refuted information circulating online claiming that they will soon start taxing dowry payments to raise revenues.
The story that originated from a blog post published on December 3, 2019, claimed the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) was going to start collecting on dowry payments in a bid to meet its target revenue collection.
The blog had stated that the taxman would periodically publish names of Kenyans paying dowry and those who had paid before would also be included in the new tax bracket.
“This information circulating on social media is fake news and did not originate from us,” KRA head of marketing and communication told Standard Digital. KRA proceeded to then make an official statement on twitter;
