  • How Central Rift Valley Gangs Are Making Sh50m Monthly

How Central Rift Valley Gangs Are Making Sh50m Monthly

The public transport sector in the Rift Valley region is losing millions every month due to gangs that run the industry

Central Rift Matatu Owners Association Chairman David Kuria has said organized criminal gangs are taking over the management and operation of bus termini in the region and extorting an exorbitant amount of money from matatu owners monthly.

During holidays the cartels direct drivers to hike the fares which they later collect on per trip made basis failure to which will put the drivers out of business. This is clearly robbing the travelers,” said Kuria.

In some of the larger cities like Nakuru the gangs charge upto Sh 50,000 per matatu by collecting bribes and protection fees.

A report from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed that some of the criminal gangs were arising from former matatu Sacco employees fired for indiscipline.

The DCI detailed how some unscrupulous drivers and touts attached to respected SACCOS were being used as couriers for illicit brews and narcotics and were networking with members of organized gangs to convey the contrabands into estates.

Out of fear of these gangs, drivers working in central Rift valley are not willing to speak about it because of the consequences that may follow after such.

Kuria told the meeting that though the county government had the capacity and human resource to uproot criminal gangs from bus parks, its top management was reluctant to act. In the past, influential politicians have been accused of sponsoring and bailing out of court members of organized gangs once they are arrested. “There is a need for the formation of a special unit that can secretly investigate the matter,” He said.

Nakuru East Deputy Sub County Police Commander Daniel Kitavi assured the operators that a major crackdown on all organized criminal gangs was being conducted and will be extended to the termini. He said a significant number of arrests of members of a notorious gang had been made and mobile phones recovered from suspects yielding useful tips.

  • Ruto’s Kalenjin Tanga Tanga Members Opposes Building Bridges Initiative’s Leaked Proposals

Ruto’s Kalenjin Tanga Tanga Members Opposes Building Bridges Initiative’s Leaked Proposals

DP Ruto’s Team Tang tanga have stepped up their opposition to a referendum this time around arguing that the proposal for a single seven-year presidential term limit was insupportable. Tanga tanga MPs Benjamin Washiali and Margaret Kamar criticized the seven-year term proposal while backing the current two five-year presidential terms.

They were responding to the Thirdway Alliance Party leader Ekuru Aukot’s Punguza Mizigo (Constitution of Kenya Amendment) Bill which proposes the introduction of a single seven-year term presidency.

High Representative for Infrastructure Development in AfricaRaila Odinga is among the groups that have backed the seven-year non-renewable presidential term and an executive Prime Minister in their submissions to the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI).

In February, during an address at Chatham House, London, Ruto dismissed calls for a referendum aimed at creating positions for what he termed as ‘selfish leaders’. DP Ruto and his allied legislators have sworn to oppose any constitutional changes that aim at either expanding or cutting the powers of the Executive.

Ruto while addressing two separate church gatherings in Narok County, he welcomed Punguza Mizigo and Building Bridges Initiative calls to change the Constitution but questioned the brains behind the bill which he says is not ‘people-centered’ and whose objectives doesn’t seem, according to Ruto, truthful.

“The talk around the referendum should be carried out in an objective manner, devoid of deceit and done for the interest of all Kenyans, not for selfish interests,” DP Ruto said.

While ODM party which is deep into the handshake arrangement supports the seven-year non-renewable term saying that that will take focus away from the presidency which has a matter of life and death for ethnic leaders. A leaked BBI preliminary report also supported the proposal.

The National Assembly chief whip Benjamin Ashiali stated that if passed, the single seven-year term for president proposed in Ekuru Aukot’s Punguza Mizigo Bill would lead to two different elections-one for MPs and governors and another for president.

“I had the intention of supporting Punguza Mizigo, but there is one proposal that I do not agree with. Kenya will be holding many separate elections. This will not reduce our wage bill at all,” said Washiali.

According to the Punguza Mizigo initiative, when the term of the president comes to an end, Kenyans would be subjected to another round of elections for only one person, when the rest of the leaders have settled down,” Washiali added.

“What if one day we elect a leader who turns out to be a dictatorial President? We only want five-year term limits for Kenyan presidents,” Uasin-Gishu Senator Margaret Kamar said while opposing the bill and a leaked BBI memo.

on their defense, The Third Way Alliance has defended their proposal to have a  single seven-year presidential term stating that it will end violent competition for the presidency, and stop looting by incumbent fighting to finance reelection campaign.

“The proposed one seven-year term limit will end the “do or die” culture of re-election. There is an established violence trend in all our electoral cycles when the incumbent seeks re-election. There is accelerated theft of public money in the last two years of a first-term presidency because of the need to finance re-election. One term will also stop the cyclical economic meltdown witnessed during 1992, 1997, 2007, and 2017 elections,” the Bill argues.

Over the weekend Tanga tanga camp kept up its opposition to the Raila-Uhuru endorsed Building Bridges Initiative, which winded up their public hearings and will be retreating to compile its report that will be submitted to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila, who set up the team following their March 9, 2018 handshake.

Caleb Kositany, Ruto’s diehard fan, and Soy MP inculpated the BBI team of pursuing selfish interests stating that it was suspicious that people who supported the 2010 Constitution had changed tune and started calling for changes in the same law.

“The Constitution should be changed based on the views of Kenyans and not because of individual interests. Some of us had suggested we amend the 2010 Constitution and others now calling for changes insisted that we pass it without amendments,” Kositany said.

Uasin-Gishu Woman Representative Gladys Shollei who is also a tanga tanga member rubbished off  BBI team seriousness sitting that the team of ‘busybodies’ was wasting time in five-star hotels instead of collecting views and serious questions raised in the set up of the 2010 constitution from ordinary Kenyans and their leaders.

Uasin-Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago, who previously said he longer puts politics and political game in his heart, called out the BBI team for not taking views from leaders in his county. Mandago also has hinted that the council of governors was plotting to introduce another referendum campaign that would be dubbed Ugatuzi (devolution) to push for more resources to devolved units.

“As county governments, we are not on BBI and Punguza Mizigo groups. We are now bringing forth our referendum called Ugatuzi because we have been frustrated by Parliament. Ours will increase resources to counties,” governor  Mandago said.

National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale, who, most probably because of what is seen as a targeted political war on corruption directed to Ruto’s camp, has disappeared from the Tanga tanga movement activities is of contrary opinion and has stated that he will support a parliamentary system of government to avoid violence that is incontrovertible every election year.

“I am going to convince the President and Deputy President and members of Jubilee Party to support the parliamentary system,”  Aden Duale stated.

Amani National Congress Party leader and former Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi opposed the Punguza Mizigo’s recommendation to reduce the number of constituencies to lower the wage bill stating that the real burden for Kenyans was theft from public coffers and not the number of constituencies.

  • Food Crisis: Maize Reserves Are Going Empty

Food Crisis: Maize Reserves Are Going Empty

Panic looms as Kenya’s State-backed emergency maize reserve will run empty with the release of two million bags to millers from this week.

Noah Wekesa, the chairman of Strategic Food Reserve (SFR), says they want to empty the reserve in a bid to lower flour price.

The chairman has however urged the public to remain calm as the Reserve will replace the emergency buffer with new grains once farmers start harvesting from September.

The country is facing a shortage of maize pushing the price of 2kg packet of flour to Sh120 from about Sh80. in a quest to lower these prices SFR stated maize from the reserves will be sold at Sh2,300 per 90-kilogramme bag, compared to the market price of Sh3,600.

The National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) released 3 million bags to millers in June to address the high cost of flour that had hit a high Sh125 per two kg packet.

The government has cited hoarding of maize for the price jump, arguing that the country has enough grains after a bumper harvest last year.

Maize harvest hit 40.9 million bags last year, reflecting a 20 percent rise that was expected to deliver cheaper flour.

Farmers fear releasing maize to the market following forecast of failed rains this year, worsening the ongoing food shortages and water scarcity.

Earlier in the year Mps had raised alarm over the country’s susceptibility to a food crisis after the government failed to allocate funds to the Strategic Food Reserve.

Questions Linger on whether the government even has sufficient funds to sustain the supply of two million bags.

  • Harrison Mumia Wants February 17th Declared National Holiday For Atheists

Harrison Mumia Wants February 17th Declared National Holiday For Atheists

Do you believe in God or gods? Or you believe in nothing!  Well, in Kenya, the association of non-believers has petitioned the government to recognize February 17th a National Holiday.

Harrison Mumia, the president of Atheists in Kenya (AIK) has accused the government through his later to the State, of giving special treatment to Christians and Muslims and turning a blind eye on the minority groups such as atheists.

According to Mumia, the government has taken them and their non-believing act for granted citing the decision by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to gazette Monday, August 12th, as a public holiday to mark the Islamic Festival of Eid ul Adha.

This declaration amounts to religious privilege that the dominant religions in Kenya (Christians and Muslims) have enjoyed since independence, courtesy of the Kenyan Government and the current Constitution,” he said in a letter.

In order to end this social inequity that is rooted in history and the normalization of Christianity and Islam as the de facto religions in Kenya, we demand that CS Fred Matiang’i declares February 17th as an atheist holiday,” Mumia added.

Mumia said the declaration of February 17th as atheists’ holiday would end the abhorrence they face from members of dominant religious groups in the country.

As it stands today, atheists are considered an underclass in this country, yet our constitution protects freedom of belief and conscience,” he noted.
AIK was registered as a society under the Societies Act, Cap 108 on February 17th, 2016.

  • US Billionaire Jeffery Epstein Commits Suicide In His Manhattan Cell

US Billionaire Jeffery Epstein Commits Suicide In His Manhattan Cell

American billionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein has committed suicide in his prison cell in New York while awaiting trial for child sex trafficking charges. The billionaire paedophile is reported to have hanged himself in his Lower Manhattan prison cell.

His body was found in the Metropolitan Correctional Centre in New York on Saturday morning at around 7.30am. Manhattan federal prosecutors last month charged the 66-year-old with sex-trafficking girls as young as 14. Epstein was already a registered sex offender after being found guilty of soliciting a minor for prostitution in 2008. He spent 18 months in prison.

Epstein was also an associate of Donald Trump and previously a regular at the US president’s Mar-a-Lago club. Mr. Trump can be seen chatting and joking with Epstein during a party at his Mar-a-Lago resort in archive video. The pair are admiring a group of young women in footage unearthed by NBC News and dating to 1992.

Mr. Trump is seen to lean towards Epstein and apparently says: “Look at her, back there. … She’s hot”. Shortly afterwards, a second comment from Mr Trump prompts Epstein to double over with laughter.

“I’ve known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy,” the now president, told New York magazine in 2002. “He’s a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it – Jeffrey enjoys his social life.”

The news of Epstein’s death comes as Prince Andrew was accused in newly released legal documents of groping a young woman’s breast at Epstein’s home.  The allegation surfaced in a cache of legal papers unsealed by a US judge in a defamation case involving Ghislaine Maxwell – a British socialite alleged to have supplied Epstein and his well-off social circle with underage girls.

Virginia Giuffre, an alleged victim of Epstein who also claimed she was forced into a sexual encounter with Prince Andrew, sued Ms. Maxwell in 2015.  In the legal documents, released on Friday, Johanna Sjoberg, another alleged Epstein victim, said Prince Andrew touched her breast while sitting on a couch inside Epstein’s Manhattan flat in 2001. Buckingham Palace has insisted the allegations about the Duke of York are “categorically untrue”.

Epstein was facing fresh charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy and was due to potentially stand trial next year. The new charges laid against Epstein concern trafficking allegations involving dozens of minors from 2002 to 2005 allegedly carried out in Florida and New York. Epstein’s lawyers said they should be wiped as the new legal action backtracks on a plea agreement which saw him admit his 2008 charge in return for immunity from future allegations.

Epstein had previously been relocated to a suicide-watch unit after being found unconscious in his jail cell with marks on his neck on 23 July – a week after his bail request was rejected.

  • 62 People Killed While Trying To Siphon Fuel From A Tanker In Tanzania

62 People Killed While Trying To Siphon Fuel From A Tanker In Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (AP) — A damaged tanker truck exploded in eastern Tanzania as people were trying to siphon fuel out of it Saturday, killing at least 62 in one of the worst incidents of its kind in the East African country.

Tanzanian state broadcaster KBC, citing police figures, said at least 70 more people were injured during the explosion in the town of Morogoro, located about 120 miles (200 kilometers) from the economic hub of Dar es Salaam.

Regional police commissioner Steven Kabwe told the local Azam TV that many suffered serious burns.

Witnesses told The Associated Press that a crowd had gathered around the fuel tanker after it was involved in an accident early Saturday and some people were trying to siphon away fuel when the truck burst into flames.

Government spokesman Hassan Abbasi wrote on Twitter that news of the deaths was “received with sadness.”

“We send our condolences to the families, relatives and friends,” he said.

Residents are routinely killed by explosions while stealing fuel from incapacitated tankers in East Africa. Those who steal the fuel usually hope to be able to sell it cheaply to motorists.

In 2013, at least 29 people were killed on the outskirts of the Ugandan capital, Kampala, as scores swarmed around the scene of an accident.

There is limited awareness about the danger of explosions of damaged fuel tankers, said Henry Bantu, a road safety expert who runs the Tanzania-based Safe Speed Foundation. Local leaders need to do more to educate people on the risks, he said.

  • Two People Commit Suicide After Being Diagnosed With Cancer

Two People Commit Suicide After Being Diagnosed With Cancer

A 65-year-old man, who was allegedly diagnosed with cancer, has committed suicide. Tabathia Mugambi hanged himself in his house on Thursday evening at Kwa Mwaura village in Laikipia East Sub-county just hours after being screened
It was not immediately established what type of cancer the deceased was suffering from and at what stage.
The incident was reported by the deceased’s nephew Charles Maina who told police officers that he found his uncle hanging from his house’s roof.
Laikipia county police boss Maxwell Nyaema yesterday said the deceased left behind suicide note indicating that he did it on his own and that no one should be blamed for his demise
“The deceased left behind a suicide note that was found in his house about 200 metres from Kalalu trading centre. It stated that he did it on his own and his wife Teresia Kabariti Nyokabi should not be asked anything,” the commander said.
The incident occurs a few days after a 40-year-old woman from Naivasha committed suicide after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
Purity Muthoni hanged herself in her sister’s house in Kasarani Estate after travelling from Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) where she had gone for treatment.
“She waited until the sister had gone to work before using a rope to commit suicide after telling her friends that she did not want to undergo the pain other cancer victims had gone,” a neighbor said.
The mother of two had been undergoing treatment in different hospitals before she was diagnosed with the disease.
Cancer is now the third leading cause of death, and the second among non-communicable diseases (NCDs), accounting for seven per cent of the overall mortality.
The number of people diagnosed with cancer has tripled in the last couple of years.
As many as 133 people are diagnosed with the disease every day as the incidence of the disease continues to grow in the country with about 90 Kenyans dying from cancer daily, with many having been diagnosed too late for treatment.
Kenyans recently took to social media with calls to declare cancer a national disaster.
  • Raila: The Parliament Should Apologize To Kenyans For Spending Taxpayers’ Money On Irrelevant US Trip

Raila: The Parliament Should Apologize To Kenyans For Spending Taxpayers’ Money On Irrelevant US Trip

Jubilee administration under the leadership of President Uhuru has collecting forcing and traping Kenyans to pay and submit their tax returns while the National Assembly plans and approves useless trips on coffers pockets.

On Thursday, MPs went for a one-month recess without providing a list of members and staff who traveled for a legislative conference in the US that has caused furor after Kenya sent the largest delegation of 85 people. Deputy Speaker Moses Cheboi (Kuresoi North MP) failed to provide a list of the MPs and staff who had traveled to the US despite promising to do so.

New details have emerged stating that five more leaders traveled to the US for the legislative conference, whose agenda included sampling country music and getting inspirational talks from songstress Dolly Parton, bringing the total number of MPs, senators, ward representatives and Parliament’s staff to 90.

Sources speaking to the media stated that senators Agnes Zani (ODM, nominated), Fredrick Outa (Kisumu), Meru Speaker Joseph Kaberia and MCAs Ayub Bundi and Victor Karithi were listed as additional participants from Kenya by the organizers.

Raila Odinga was the first to chastise the wastage of taxpayers’ money, scolding the MPs for encouraging a culture of waste and living large at the expense of taxpayers.

Raila while speaking at the Media Council gala night last evening, stated that Kenya sent a delegation of 90 people to the US conference, adding that it was a shame to send such a huge delegation at the taxpayers’ cost. The former prime minister who has since demanded that Parliament apologize to Kenyans for spending their tax totally meaningless US.

Raila, who seem to have credible sources said that Kenya provided the largest number of participants at the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) in Nashville, Tennessee, at a time when President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration is proposing cuts on foreign travel as part of a wide range of austerity measures.

The only other country that sent a large delegation from Africa is Nigeria, which flew 20 legislators to the US before adding two more. Indonesia sent one, Portugal sent two, and Japan had six. Neighboring Uganda deployed three, Mr. James Mukaga (principal clerk assistant), Ms. Jane Rozse Semakula Ikiror (assistant director, Parliament) and Sitnah Cherotich (assistant director, Parliament). The main host, the United States had only nine key representatives.

According to Raila, Kenyan representatives at the conference that officially started on Monday and ended on Thursday could be more than 100, as some hangers-on who accompanied the VIPs were not listed in the official conference list.

In spite of National Assembly Deputy Speaker Moses Cheboi promising to issue a communication on an apology, the MPs demanded the House breaks for recess on Thursday with no mention of the trip. The two Houses, the Senate and National Assembly, have also been on the spot to explain why they paid for some staff who virtually had no role at the conference, to attend at the expense of taxpayers.

While a few of the Kenyan delegates were invited to the conference from as early as April for being in the technical and steering committee, amongst them, senators Kihika Kimani and Mutula Kilonzo Jr, most of the members of the delegation were honorable joyriders.

The list of the travelers could have been trimmed by the offices of the Speaker, clerk, senators, and MPs with either of them settling on one or two representatives. National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi and his Senate counterpart Ken Lusaka, who led the Kenyan joyriders to the US has remained mute.

On Thursday, the National Assembly went for a month recess without providing a list of the members and staff who traveled for the meeting. Deputy speaker Mr. Cheboi (Kuresoi North MP) failed to provide a list of the MPs and the staff who had traveled to the US, despite promising to do so.

On Wednesday,  Simba Arati had requested the speaker Mr. Cheboi to act on his request and the speaker promised to deliver the statement clarifying the matter after MPs complained, saying only about five legislators had traveled.

Speaker Muturi, who arrived in the US for the conference last Sunday, three days after most of the Kenyan participants had arrived despite the conference starting on Monday, was expected back in the country on Friday. Muturi’s whereabouts remain unknown and an aide who received his call told local media that the Speaker was still in the US.

The Commission on Revenue Allocation stipulates that the Speakers of Parliament are paid about Sh75,000 as a daily subsistence allowance for travel to the US, MPs pocket Sh65,000, and MCAs Sh42,600. From the figures, the trip could have a cost of more than 100 Million.

A round-trip business class ticket on the national carrier Kenya Airways costs about Sh587,000 from Nairobi to Nashville International Airport, and about Sh355,000 for economy class. Kenya Airways started direct flights to New York last year and the delegation has to connect from there to Nashville. An average hotel room in Nashville goes for between Sh15,000 and Sh30,000 per night.

Raila said that the US trip was evidence that these institutions have money they do not know what to do with, or they simply don’t care about the burden taxpayers are bearing.

Even though the Tennessee conference targets State legislators, legislative staff, government officials, business representatives, educators and others interested in public policy, the Kenyan delegation also included a number of personal assistants of the legislators other key speakers at the conference was American singer-songwriter Parton, presidential biographer, Pulitzer Prize winner and one of America’s most prominent historians Jon Meacham, author Wes Moore – celebrated filmmaker Evan Shapiro and CNN political contributor Vin Jones.

    WAGE BILL

The conference targeted about 5,000 delegates from across the world. It coincided with a visit by President Kenyatta to Jamaica. Another training targeting government officials from 21 Kenyan border counties has been going on in Arizona and Washington, DC.

Auditor-General’s report indicates that MCAs spent Sh162 million on foreign travel in the 2016/17 financial year. The county executive spent a wobbling Sh267 million in the same period. While expressing concern about the huge public wage bill last year, the Controller of Budget said demands for increased salaries and allowances by public officers and civil servants must be addressed, warning that the wage bill may not be sustainable in the long run if not contained.

  • Museveni’s Administration To Register And Monitor Social Media Influencers

Museveni’s Administration To Register And Monitor Social Media Influencers

African countries should avoid electing these extra old leaders who need to be resting at their homes or running their family business, that’s if, at all, they have either of the two. Uganda just like any other suffering African countries is forced to bear the burden of an old-school stone-hearted man at the helm of their leadership structures.

After signing a Bill that Tax social media users, Yoweri Museveni has now instructed his administration through Uganda’s communications regulator to register and monitor activities of Influencers on Ugandan social media and others with large, commercialized online followings.

According to Museveni’s allies and handlers, directive and scheme which also levies a $20 fee, is designed to clamp down on immoral or prejudiced content largely directed to the President, his family, and administration.

I mean everyone should at least agree with me that Museveni’s behaviour and the directive is centuries back a total disgrace to the independence and democracy, which clearly isn’t existing, of the People of  Uganda. Museveni is committed to a cause of muting his critics and now wants to suppress online content disapproving of him and his government.

Last week, university lecturer and social researcher Stella Nyanzi was jailed for 18 months on cyber harassment charges stemming from a Facebook post criticizing Museveni. According to digital communications rights watchdog Unwanted Witness, between 2016 and 2018 at least 33 Ugandans have either been summoned and interrogated by police or charged with online communications offences. The registration scheme is “not a positive move, it infringes on the rights to freedom of expression.

People are able to express themselves well when they know that somebody is not watching over them,” said the organization’s chief executive, Dorothy Mukasa.

Ibrahim Bbosa, Uganda Communications Commission spokesman stated that the data communicators to be registered included individuals with heavily followed social media and other online accounts that carried ads alongside other content on platforms including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. That would include prominent musicians, journalists and socialites.

“As a data communicator…you’re pushing out content which could easily violate the known parameters of morality, of incitement, of ethnic prejudice or not be factual. We want online platforms to register with the commission so that we can monitor (them), a process that the $20 fee was designed to fund.” Bbosa said

Robert Ssempala, national coordinator for Human Rights Network for Journalists-Uganda, said that, for many, the fee was prohibitive.

“The spirit of the regulation is essentially to make it extremely unaffordable, to make it extremely frightening for people to engage in sharing information on social media,” he added.

Last year the government introduced a tax on the use of popular social media platforms. Museveni has repeatedly complained that Ugandan social media is a vehicle for lying and spreading unregulated gossip, interpreted referring to information critical of the government.

In a Nutshell, any State that makes a mistake of trusting their leadership structures to leaders who have taken power by force rather attempted to take power through rigging or military force should expect muddles like the ones Uganda is in right now. Museveni has been in power since 1986, one wonders what is this that he has not accomplished for more than 3 decades. And if you think that he’s letting go, then you are the one in the wrong country, Museveni is extensively expected to run again in the next presidential election in 2021.

  • Kalenjin Leaders Want Raila To Moderate Second Phase Of Mau Forest Evictions

Kalenjin Leaders Want Raila To Moderate Second Phase Of Mau Forest Evictions

Mau Forest eviction is considered to be a slow political venomous poison that Kibaki cleverly gave Raila Odinga and without doubt, it still harms his political ambitions if the larger former Rift Valley province to date.

Things are slowly changing and the Former prime minister could soon find the much-needed antidote after a section of Rift Valley leaders visited him to help ensure the second phase of the Mau Forest evictions targeting some 60,000 settlers is done in what they termed as a ‘humane way’.

The group of Kalenjin leaders who visited Raila was led by former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto. According to Isaac Ruto, there is a fear on the ground that the intended evictions in the South Rift will backfire if it’s done blindly and without proper consultations.

“The evictions can cause a major humanitarian crisis even igniting ethnic flare-ups. We are reaching out to the State and key players to halt the process until a proper approach is adopted,” said Ruto

Former Governor stated in a meeting with  Mr. Odinga early in the week. Former Cabinet Minister Franklin Bett, one-time powerful internal security permanent secretary Zakayo Cheruiyot and politician Paul Sang met Mr. Odinga in what they termed as a move in need of a broader approach to the issue.

“Raila understands the (eviction) issue since he has handled it before. He was easy to access and he knows the challenge ahead,” Ruto said.

“The first round of evictions affected 18,000 school-going children. State issued title deeds must be respected,” said the former Kuresoi South MP Zakayo Cheruiyot.

Environment CS Keriako Tobiko announced two months ago the Government’s intention to carry out the second round of the Mau Forest evictions to clear the water tower of illegal settlers.

According to Tobiko, the second phase of the evictions has no compensation as the targeted group had illegally encroached on government land a move that could probably cause retaliation that might lead to blood being shed and unfortunate acts like lives of Kenyans being lost.

Billionaire Humphrey Kariuki To Be Put On Interpol’s Watchlist As DCI Kinoti Seeks International Arrest Warrant

Things are heading from bad to worse for one of Kenya’s most reclusive billionaire. In a statement issued by the DCI Kinoti, Kariuki who’s believed to be hiding in Mozambique is a man on the run and the long arms of the law could soon catch up with him.

Kinoti says they’ve now resorted to use Interpol in arresting the tycoon. In the warrant, Kinoti wants Interpol to arrest and detain Kariuki wherever he is found, with the activation of a Red Notice at airports across the world.

“I am applying for an international warrant of arrest for Humphrey Kariuki through Intrepol for him to be arrested and detained anywhere in the world including all airports,” Kinoti said.

Kariuki is wanted in Kenya to face charges of evading to pay Sh41 billion in taxes through his businesses Africa Spirits and Wines of the World.

Police were last evening looking for reclusive billionaire Humphrey Kariuki after the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Noordin Haji, ordered his immediate arrest alongside eight others on claims of tax evasion amounting to more than Sh41 billion by Africa Spirits and Wow Beverages in Thika.

He is accused alongside Wow Beverages directors Stuart Gerald Herd and Robert Thinji Muriithi, and Africa Spirits Directors Peter Njenga Kuria and Geoffrey Kaaria Kinoti Mbombua.

After perusing their files, the DPP said he was convinced there was sufficient evidence to charge the suspects with being in possession of uncustomed goods, counterfeit excise stamps, tax evasion and fraud, all amounting to more than Sh41 billion.

The items were confiscated from the factory in February during a raid by a multi-agency team.

Joe Mwangi the man who played his alleged conning acts below the radar and managed to keep his crooked ways away from limelight has found himself in a cash twenty-two situation.

Following an interview on Citizen TV’s JKL on Wednesday, gymnast Wendy Waeni accused her former manager Joe Mwangi of exploiting her talent for selfish reasons, something that did not go well with a section of Kenyans.

“I’ve been performing all over the world, and right now I live in Huruma because of Joe Mwangi. I’ve performed in Rwanda, Germany, and China…and I’ve not got even a single penny. My mum is really suffering right now, she sells sweets, I live in Huruma in a single-room with her. Wendy said while on the  JKL show.

“People are telling me that I’m rude, that I’m a brat, that I post things on Instagram…which I don’t really know. I don’t have access to my social media accounts, it’s Joe Mwangi who controls them,” said Wendy.

On Thursday, Joe came out to give his side of the story and alleged that the minor might have been coached to give misleading information on national TV. He added that he has never left the country in the company of Wendy and dared anyone who has proof to come forth.

“On the video, it has been said that I (Joe) has traveled all over the world with Wendy, FACT: I have NEVER, NEVER EVER left this country in the company of Wendy Waeni. Anybody with any prove (sic) that I have flown out any given time with her, put it here.

“It’s alleged that for more than 5yrs Wendy has never received a penny, I mean…. which parent in this World will allow his/her kid to be misused for not 1 month, not 1year, but 5yrs..?????,” Joe asked.

In his responses, however, coming amidst a storm of social media backlash from a section of Kenyans, Joe – in a tweet to Duncan Ondimu, Principal Prosecution Counsel in the office of the DPP – implied that he would be seeking legal action.

But things seemed to change when Joe Mwangi said: “Anybody with any proof that I have flown out any given time with her, put it here.” And, just before he could finish a tweet thread of his response, Media Personality, C.E.O Cape Media and Manager
@Tv47KE Eugine Anangwe slapped him with this video

A video that has seen everyone coming out with what looks like an open door opportunity to expose Joe Mwangi’s entire business dealings that might lead him in the hands of the DCI, and if proven guilty, he might be behind the bars for a very long time.

  • Big Win For Raila’s Handshake Kisumu Port Project

Big Win For Raila’s Handshake Kisumu Port Project

ODM party leader and the AU’s High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa will host four presidents from East Africa in the official launching ceremony of the Sh3 billion Kisumu port.

The Kisumu Port is one of the biggest rather the face of Raila, projects initiated in the former Nyanza province after the handshake. This is seen as part of the handshake goodies that he had promised and the project is expected to restore the glory of Kisumu City, the once vibrant East Africa hub, an area that had been deliberately marginalized by the previous administrations.

According to sources speaking to the media, RAO will be hosting his close political allies and friends of his allies. On Thursday next week, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga will host President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya, Yoweri Museveni leader of Uganda Uganda, Felix Tshisekedi of Congo, and John Magufuli from Tanzania.

Everyone knows that Magufuli and Tsisekedi are Raila’s family and political close friends and even though, Raila might to be in good terms with Museveni, but from recent visits in Kenya and signing some deals, we all know his ties with President Uhuru are way too close and the Port, being the biggest project in Lake Victoria, he definitely wouldn’t miss the opportunity and time to attend.

Yesterday, State House spokesperson Kanze Dena, who is in Jamaica with Uhuru said final communications on the launch of the port will be issued next week. Already Kenya Ports Authority has installed forklift trucks, mobile cranes and tractor-trailers in a clear signal that it’s all systems go.

KPA managing director Daniel Manduku told the Star on Thursday the port will initially create between 100 and 200 direct jobs when officially opened. “We are ready and all the equipment needed is on-site,” said Manduku.

Lake Victoria is the second largest freshwater body in the world with 13 ports and for Prime minister, Raila has been following the project so close and keenly. RAO has visited the site more than four times and receives updates on every step of the rehabilitation of the port.

Last Thursday Raila, President Kenyatta and DP William Ruto visited the port to inspect the progress of the repairs and Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi stated during the visit that the makeover of the port was a clear testament that the handshake is working

“We are happy with the speed at which this project, among others, is moving. This is a clear testament of what the handshake between the President and the Prime Minister has done. This is one of the major projects that will not only open up the entire western region but will create employment for the thousands of youths and increase trade between Kenya and neighbouring countries.” Wandanyi said.

If the Port project works, Raila will have a smooth way for the people of Nyanza, Western and most probably other regions who will be employed directly or indirectly by the Port. Raila has also assured his Nyanza political turf that his strong-willed plans to revive collapsed Kisumu Cotton Mills (Kicomi), are well on course and the Government is also setting up an industrial park in Muhoroni, Kisumu county.

According to Raila handlers, all the key projects that the region has received are on course due to the famous March 2018 handshake between President Uhuru and Raila Odinga. Some of the projects include the construction of the Koru-Mamboleo road, Kabunde airstrip where Sh128 million has been allocated to pay off the landowner and Sh4 billion allocated to the blue economy.

Water Hyacinth had also choked the lake. Almost all the beaches had been filled with the deadly weed. Lake Victoria Beach Management Units Chairman Tom Guda said for a month now, fishermen in Karachuonyo and Kochia have felt the pinch of water hyacinth infestation.

“Water hyacinth restricts the movement of boats. How do you cast your nets in water infested in hyacinth? Sometimes you set out to go fishing only to be trapped in the water for eight hours,” said Mr Guda.

According to the Kenya Marine and Fisheries Research Institute Kisumu (KMFRI), periodic changes in wind patterns and human activities encourage the re-germination of the stubborn weed on Lake Victoria.

According to Dr Aura, by January this year approximately 10,360 hectares of the lake was covered by water hyacinth that tends to settle where there is little pressure from the wind.

“Rachuonyo’s proximity to Homa Hills and trees which act as windbreakers bring water hyacinth to Rachuonyo. At our station, we have water hyacinth prediction map which shows the accurate spatial-temporal availability of weed. Currently the area affected include Kisumu Bay, Homa Bay, Osodo Bay, Kendu Bay, Nyakach Bay and Ngege Bay.” Dr Aura noted.

“The National Environmental Management Authority (Nema) has designated water hyacinth disposal sites. After removal of the weed you are not allowed to throw it away,” said the environmental authority.

Since the Port project was launched, the government has taken measures to hyacinth that had choked the Lake by setting up licensed water hyacinth disposal sites in Homa Bay County. This includes Alara Beach, Oginga Beach, Ngegu Beach, Rakwaro Beach, Achuodho, Kananga and Rarimba Beach.

“We are happy with the progress made so far. The port, a major project in the region, is shaping up and we hope soon our leaders, the President and the former Prime Minister, will be commissioning,” ODM chairman and Suba South MP John Mbadi said

The seriousness of the Port projects can also be felt and seen from a far, NYS and prison workers are clearing bushes around the port and the gates to the port remain locked to members of the public and thorough checks are done before one is allowed access.

Kenya Coast Guard has also been given a go-ahead and has already taken charge of security at the port ahead of the launch and taking pics and videos of the site is a prohibited act.

The project has seen structures around the port demolished including the famous Lwang’ni beach which saw traders lose millions of shillings without alternative places to go.

Kisumu Residents Association Chairman Audi Ogada said following the destruction and public outcry they expect the port once opened to provide opportunities for people.

“Our expectation is that the port is effectively managed to give employment opportunities to our youths and even chances to the business persons whose structures were demolished,” he said.

On June 14, Uhuru and Raila were at the port t to check progress and on July 6, the President made an impromptu tour after a two-day visit to Tanzania. The President also toured the Kenya Marine School and the dry dock where the giant MV Uhuru is docked. He held meetings with officials and was briefed on the project.

President Uhuru ordered the repair of the 1,000-tonne and 91-meter-long cargo ship of which the MV Uhuru engine was switched on and roared for hours.

“Kisumu port was the biggest dry dock inland in the entire African continent where vessels such as SS Usonga, SS Nyanza, MV Victoria and MV Uhuru amongst others were manufactured. We want to see this happening again here,” Raila said.

Rugby Players Alex Olaba and Frank Wanyama Found Guilty Of Gang Rape

It’s the end of the road for two promising careersafter two Kenya Harlequins players were declared guilty of rape by a Milimani Law Court Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku late Thursday.

The two allegedly recorded the entire ordeal, and when they learnt that the victim was planning to seek legal redress, they deleted the video recordings.

The chief magistrate stated the case had guilt written all over it after the duo deleted a video recording of the assaultwhich would have been key evidence in the case

The suspects’ decision to delete the videos was an action of guilt,” said Magistrate Mutuku.

Alex Olaba and Frank Wanyama were in April 2018 charged with raping a woman on her birthday on February 10th at her apartment in Nairobi’s High-rise Estate.

The woman, Wendy Kemunto who is an upcoming artist allegedly became pregnant after the ordeal and claimed that one of the rugby players, who also plays for the Kenya Sevens team, had threatened to sue if she went public she claimed she tried to confront Wanyama with the allegations, but he dismissed her telling her to go look for a lawyer if she decided to go public.

In their statements, the duo stated they knew the accuser and that they were together on the day she claims she was sexually assaulted during her birthday on February 10.

The rape allegations emerged on March 31st 2018 after the artist accused the two on her Instagram page of taking advantage of her and engaging in a forced threesome which resulted in the unplanned pregnancy.

The ruling had been postponed twice after Olaba missed court sessions and at some point a warrant of arrest was issued after missing for the second time.

They had earlier denied these accusations and had been released on bail

The two athletes who have vowed to appeal against the decision will be sentenced on Friday, August 9th.
