Sam Atandi to Replace Ndindi Nyoro as Budget Committee Chair – Senator Methu Reveals

Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi is set to become the next Chairperson of the Budget and Appropriations Committee in what appears to be a pre-arranged political decision under the broad based government framework following President William Ruto’s pact with ODM Party leader Raila Odinga, Nyandarua Senator John Methu has revealed.

Speaking on a local media station, Senator Methu stated that committee leadership positions in Parliament have already been determined by party leadership, with members expected to follow directives rather than engage in contested elections.

“For all the elections that have happened at the Senate, the elections have not been contested because these are issues that have been agreed upon. The decision of who chairs what is not really a decision of the members,” Methu asserted.

    Ndindi Nyoro Sidelined

    Ndindi Nyoro.

The senator categorically ruled out Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro from the race for Budget Committee chair, despite widespread speculation about his candidacy.

“I can tell you straight to your face, Ndindi Nyoro is not going to be the chairman of the committee on budget. He will not even pick up his nomination paper,” Methu stated.

According to Methu, members of the Budget Committee have already been directed to back Atandi for the chairmanship, making the upcoming election a mere formality.

“As a team, in terms of making the broad-based arrangement work, we have settled on Sam Atandi to be the chairman of this particular committee. What will happen this week or next week will just be a rubber stamp of what has already been agreed,” he explained.

    Party Directives and Internal Control

The senator also disclosed that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party leadership had issued strict instructions regarding committee appointments, warning members against engaging with perceived rebels or opposition figures.

“The leader of the majority (Kimani Ichung’wah) wrote on our platform, ‘Those who are engaging rebels and the opposition, we shall dewhip you from those particular committees,’” Methu revealed.

He further noted that similar predetermined decisions had been made for other parliamentary committees, including the Defence Committee, which will be chaired by Belgut MP Nelson Koech.

Methu, a member of the Education Committee, also highlighted that committee members were given clear instructions on whom to elect, with external oversight from figures such as Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina, despite him not being a member of the committee.

“The leadership was there; Senator Ledama was there, and he is not a member of that committee. So they confirm and affirm that the positions that have been taken will be effected,” Methu stated.

    Nyoro’s Removal from Budget Committee

On March 5, 2025, Ndindi Nyoro was officially removed as Chairperson of the Budget and Appropriations Committee following a motion moved by South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro, the National Assembly Majority Whip.

Osoro’s motion restructured the National Assembly committees, effectively stripping Nyoro of his role. However, the Kiharu MP remains a member of the Budget Committee, giving him the option to contest for either the chair or vice-chair position—should he choose to do so.

With the ruling party’s leadership exerting tight control over committee appointments, Nyoro’s future role within the budget committee remains uncertain. However, if Senator Methu’s remarks are anything to go by, the matter may already be settled.

  • Kenya, Like the United States, Is a Country Made Up of Immigrants

Kenya, Like the United States, Is a Country Made Up of Immigrants

Kenya, like the United States of America (USA), is a country made up of immigrants. For example, Kenya’s Kalenjins, Luos and Maasais, came to Kenya from Egypt (via Sudan), about 4,000 years ago, Kenya’s Somalis came to Kenya from Abyssinia/Ethiopia about 2,000 years ago, Kenya’s Merus came to Kenya from Tanzania about 2,000 years ago and there is even a Mt. Meru in Tanzania, Kenya’s Abaluhyia community came to Kenya from Sudan about 2,000 years ago, Kenya’s Whites and Asians came to Kenya in the 19th and 20th centuries, and Kenya’s Kikuyus came to Kenya from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) about 2,000 years ago.
Apart from Kenya’s Whites and Asians, who did the rest of us find when we came to Kenya those many years ago? Who did we “colonise” when we came here? If Kenya’s Whites and Asians are “colonialists,” then the rest of us too are “colonialists,” because we must have found different communities here in Kenya when we came those many years ago.
And on a related note, a light one, Daniel T. arap Moi (1924 to 2020), was Vice President of Kenya from 1967 to 1978, and President of Kenya from 1978 to 2002. Daniel T. arap Moi was from Kenya’s Kalenjin community. Salim Ahmed Bamahriz (1942 to 2016), was one of six founder members of Kenya’s Forum for the Restoration of Democracy (FORD) political party, the other five being Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, George Nthenge, Philip Gachoka, Martin Shikuku and Masinde Muliro. FORD looked united and formidable in early 1992, looked like they were set to dislodge the Kenya African National Union (KANU), from power at Kenya’s General Elections of 1992. There were however internal wrangles in FORD in mid-1992, leading to the split of FORD into two, that is, FORD-Kenya lead by Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, and FORD-Asili led by Kenneth Stanley Njindo Matiba. The split weakened FORD, and contributed to KANU’s victory at the 1992 elections.
Salim Ahmed Bamhriz traced his ancestry to Yemen, and Daniel T. arap Moi traced his ancestry to Sudan. In early 1992, President Daniel T. arap Moi, at a public rally, said that Salim Ahmed Bamahriz should “go back to Yemen.” Salim Ahmed Bamahriz was a fast thinker and good with words too, and Salim Ahmed Bamahriz responded to President Moi by saying that yes indeed, he would catch the next flight to Yemen, but told President Moi to be on that flight too, so that he could be dropped off in Sudan, for good, as the flight proceeded to Yemen to drop off Salim Ahmed Bamhriz in Yemen, for good.
There also used to be a vocal White Kenyan in the 1990s based in Nakuru, Kenya, who’s name this writer does not immediately remember. In the late 1990s there was a charged debate on “Who owns Kenya” in the “Letters to the Editor” page of Kenya’s “Daily Nation” newspaper that went on for about two months, before the Editor of “Daily Nation” closed the debate. Highly charged letters from different parts of Kenya were published in the “Letters to the Editor” page of the “Daily Nation” during that about two month period.
In one of the letters, the White Kenyan mentioned above, who’s name this writer does not immediately remember, was told “to pack up his belongings and return to Britain with immediate effect.” He responded in the affirmative, saying he that he would indeed return back to Britain “with immediate effect,” but that as he did so, all other Kenyans should “also do likewise” with regard to their origins and ancestries, as he listed, in his letter, where many of us came from, and the approximate periods in time that our forebearers/forefathers/ancestors arrived in Kenya.
So, “Who owns Kenya?” Remarks made by Smith Hempstone in the year 1989 could guide us on this. Who is Smith Hempstone? Smith Hempstone (1926 to 2006), was America’s ambassador to Kenya from 1989 to 1993. In the 1970s and 1980s, there was widespread killing of Kenya’s wildlife for food, sport and sale abroad as “trophies/decorative ornaments/wall items.” Many Kenyans who hunted wildlife back then in the 1970s and 1980s, did so for subsistence, did so for food, while many tourists who hunted wildlife in Kenya back then in the 1970s and 1980s, did so for “fashion,” for sport. For example, a helicopter with White tourists would land in a Kenyan national park or Kenyan game reserve back then, and one or two individuals with powerful rifles would disembark from the helicopter and shot dead, on the spot, a rhino, a lion, or an elephant, take photographs and video along the dead animal, and then leave. That was it. Local Kenyans would then move in fast and cut up the dead animal for food. It was even said back then, that lion meat is “tasty and delicious.”
And then guess what? Local Kenyans back then who hunted wildlife were referred to as “poachers” while well heeled tourists back then who hunted wildlife in Kenya, some of whom came in private jets, were referred to, not as “poachers,” but as “hunters.” Almost all were White, bringing about the mismatch and contradiction of “Black Poachers vs. White Hunters.”
When Smith Hempstone arrived in Kenya in 1989 as America’s ambassador to Kenya, one of his key agendas was to bring an end to the killing of wildlife in Kenya. Indeed, Dr. Richard Leakey (1944 to 2022), was appointed Director of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), with a generous budget, generous personnel, and sophisticated equipment to combat “poachers” and “hunters.” A significant amount of funding for Dr. Richard Leakey’s task-at-hand was made available by the US Government. George H.W. Bush (the senior George Bush), was US President at the time.
Kenyan parliamentarians at the time came down hard on both Smith Hempstone and the US Government for “interfering in the affairs of Kenya,” telling both Smith Hempstone and the US Government that Kenya was not “an American colony.”
Smith Hempstone’s response was interesting. He said that Kenya’s wildfire did not belong to the Kenyan people, per se, but to global society in general, and that we Kenyans were simply the custodians and caretakers of Kenya’s wildlife, for the benefit of current and future generations of mankind.
So who does the Republic of Kenya as a whole belong to? To we Kenyans, or to global society in general? Are we, the current generations of Kenyans, simply the current custodians, current caretakers and current trustees of the land area known as Republic of Kenya, for the benefit of current and future generations of mankind?
Smith Hempstone did and does have a broader point, because none of us created what we today know as the Republic of Kenya, none of us created the planet Earth as a whole? Those of us of present times found the Republic of the Kenya and shall leave it behind. Those of us of present times found the planet Earth as a whole and shall leave it behind. It is our creator, the creator of mankind, and the creator of planet Earth, who could actually give guidance on “who owns what.” Does anybody have the telephone number or email address of our creator?

‘Nimewasamehe,’ Says Ruto as He Forgives Critics, Donates Sh20M to Eldoret Church a Week After Controversial Sh100M Gift in Nairobi

President William Ruto on Sunday, March 9, 2025, donated Ksh20 million to AIC Fellowship Annex in Eldoret to support church projects. This comes just a week after his controversial Ksh100 million donation to Jesus Winner Ministry Church in Nairobi sparked public outcry.

Speaking during the church service in Eldoret, President Ruto defended his donations, stating that no one would stop him from supporting churches.

“My donations to churches are aimed at helping them play a key role in fighting drug abuse and other vices among Kenyan youth,” said President Ruto.

His remarks followed protests at Jesus Winner Ministry Church in Roysambu, Nairobi, where citizens demonstrated against the president’s Ksh20 million donation to the church. The protests, organized online under the hashtag #OccupyJesusWinner, gained momentum on Sunday, leading to the arrest of 38 individuals at the church premises.

Police reported that the suspects were taken to Kasarani Police Station for questioning. Meanwhile, Bishop Edward Mwai of Jesus Winner Ministry Church claimed that unnamed individuals had mobilized thugs to demonstrate at his church.

“People I know very well used them and even sent some here today. Someday, they will know there is God’s presence at this altar. May God forgive our children who are being used in such a manner,” said Bishop Mwai.

He added, “Watu wameingia kwenye mitandao wakaniita majina mbaya, nimewasamehe, na Mungu awasamehe… pia kupitia kwa hiyo maneno ya mitandao kuna watu walikuwa hawanijui, sasa wamenijua.” (People have gone online and called me names, I have forgiven them, and may God forgive them… through these online discussions, some people who didn’t know me now know me.)

The protests were sparked by President Ruto’s visit to the church on March 2, 2025, where he pledged Ksh20 million and an additional Ksh100 million for an upcoming fundraiser. Heavy police presence was reported at the church on Sunday as youths attempted to storm the premises. Bishop Mwai confirmed that he had ordered the release of those arrested, despite police beating them for allegedly planning chaos.

  • Raila Gives Fresh Demands To Ruto For Cooperation

Raila Gives Fresh Demands To Ruto For Cooperation

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga has said the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report must be fully implemented for the party to continue its cooperation with the President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government.

Raila made the remarks on Monday March 3, 2025 during his public consultation forum with ODM delegates at Billionaires Resort in Malindi Town, Kilifi County.

“I’m consulting all my party members and getting their views and concerns and we find solutions to the problems bedeviling the country such as high cost of living, the SHA problems, abductions and devolution struggles and this are the things we want the government to address,” he said.

Kilifi ODM leaders gave Raila the nod to press on with demanding for accountability and compensation of families of people who died during the 2023 Azimio protests and the 2024 anti Finance Bill protest.

Raila was received by the Kilifi County ODM Chairman and Kilifi County Assembly speaker Teddy Mwambire, Governor Gideon Mung’aro and his deputy Flora Chibule.

Other leaders present include Senator Steward Madzayo, Kaloleni MP Paul Katana, Kilifi County MP Getrude Mbeyu, several MCAs and party delegates.

Raila made the remarks, a few days after returning to Kenya after losing in the AUC chairmanship elections.

Since his return, the ODM party leader has been demanding action from the government, seeking compensation for the demonstrators who lost their lives during the 2023 Azimio protests and the 2024 Anti Finance Bill protests.

Governor Mung’aro on his part insisted that counties were still struggling since most devolved functions have been retained at the national level such as the roads fund.

“We have had a meeting with our party leader and we have resolved to continue the push of implementation of the NADCO report because Kenya is for everyone and we have given Baba the mandate to lead the process,” he said.

At the same time, Senator Madzayo called on the government to compensate families of those who died during the 2023 and 2024 protests and those who lost their livelihoods after getting life-threatening injuries during the protests.

“Those who were rendered hopeless and lost their livelihoods must be compensated fully before we can move forward and on the issue of abductions, they must stop,” he said.

McCarthy, unveiled at a press conference in Nairobi, was last on the staff at Manchester United for two seasons under manager Erik ten Hag, working as a coach for the strikers.

His previous managerial experience has been at South African clubs Cape Town City and AmaZulu.

The 47-year-old McCarthy, who won 80 caps for South Africa and scored at the 1998 and 2002 World Cups, played in the Premier League for Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United. He lifted the Champions League with Porto in 2004.

Rally Driver Maxine Wahome Maintains Late Boyfriend Died After Cutting Himself During Domestic Fight

Award Winning Safari Rally Driver Maxine Wahome has mantained her innocence in the murder of her late boyfriend Asad Khan injured himself during a domestic altercation that led to his fatal injuries.

This came up in court on Monday during hearing of the mueder case where she was charged with the murder of Asad who succumbed to his wounds days after the fight.

In a video played in court by her lawyers, Maxine is heard crying emotionally when the officers arrived at the scene.

In the video, two police officers are seen speaking with Maxine telling her to open the door which she initially refused to open it but she later opened for them.

In the video, Maxine is heard saying, “Why should I be the one to open the door when I’m the victim? I have been beaten… He cut himself… He kicked that window… I will show you.”

Police officer John Wambua testified that he received a report initially classified as grievous harm, which was later escalated to murder. He stated that upon arriving at the scene, he found several items, including an empty soda water bottle.

During cross-examination, defense lawyer Phillip Murgor questioned Wambua on why he had not used the word alleged when describing the incident, implying a presumption of guilt rather than neutrality.

“You know that everything is an allegation before it’s proved,”asked Lawyer Phillip Murgor

Wambua confirmed that there’s a possibility that the late Assad could have injured himself while trying to reach to Maxine who was the balcony taking refuge from him during the fight.

“Can we say that Assad is a victim of his own recklessness?”Murgor asked

However, Wambua said he was not the right person to make the determination on who was the victim between deceased or the accused person.

During cross examination, Murgor pointed one picture showing that there was blood stains on broken window and a piece of flesh which the defence believes was Assad’s.

Additionally, the prosecution presented over 50 photographs taken from various angles, depicting the crime scene. Among the evidence, the court was shown bloodstains that appeared to indicate the direction the victim had moved.

Maxine has denied the murder charge, maintaining that she acted in self-defense which her lawyers have expressed to court.

Maxine was charged with the murder of her boyfriend, Asad Khan. It is alleged that on December 12 at Preston Apartments on Oloitoktok Road, she murdered Asad Khan.

The trial continues as the court examines more evidence in this high-profile case.

  • NCIC Warns Gachagua Over Tribal Incitement

NCIC Warns Gachagua Over Tribal Incitement

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has issued a stern warning to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over statements alleging that President William Ruto is orchestrating a scheme to remove Chief Justice Martha Koome from office.

In a notice dated Thursday, February 27, NCIC Chairman Samuel Kobia cautioned Gachagua against making remarks that could undermine peaceful coexistence among Kenya’s ethnic communities.

“Your allegation that there is a scheme hatched by the President to remove the Chief Justice from office because of her ethnicity is misleading and meant to promote negative ethnicity. Such statements are likely to incite feelings of animosity among Kenyans, thereby undermining peaceful coexistence,” the commission stated.

The NCIC also took issue with Gachagua’s remarks warning President Ruto against visiting Meru County if Chief Justice Koome is removed from office. The commission emphasized that such statements violate the constitutional rights of the President, who has the freedom to visit any part of the country to discharge his duties.

“Your statement warning the President not to set foot in Meru County if Chief Justice Martha Koome is removed from office is a direct violation of the President’s constitutional right as the symbol of national unity. He has the right to visit any part of the country to fulfill his official duties as the duly and lawfully elected President of the Republic of Kenya,” the commission added.

The NCIC urged Gachagua to exercise restraint and carefully choose his words, warning against hate speech or advocacy of discrimination.

“Having reviewed the statements attributed to you, the Commission cautions you to exercise more restraint and choose your words more carefully. While freedom of speech is guaranteed by our Constitution, you are advised not to engage in utterances that amount to propaganda for war, incitement to violence, hate speech, or advocacy of hatred based on discrimination,” the commission stated.

Additionally, the NCIC called on Gachagua to refrain from making remarks that could disrupt peace among ethnic groups.

“In the interest of national cohesion and unity, we ask you to desist from such or similar utterances or conduct, the particulars of which are best within your knowledge, from the date of this notice. These statements are likely to interfere with the peaceful and harmonious coexistence of ethnic groups,” the commission concluded.

Gachagua’s remarks were made during a church service at AIPCA Antubetwe Kiongo Church in Igembe North, Meru County, on Sunday, February 23. During the event, he warned President Ruto against alleged plans to remove Chief Justice Koome from office.

“If you chase our Martha Koome, don’t set foot in Meru. You chased Rigathi Gachagua, and the Mt. Kenya people were silent. You thought they were cowards,” he said.

Gachagua further threatened to call for protests if the alleged plan is executed, accusing President Ruto of undermining the leadership of the Mt. Kenya region.

“This is too much now. How do you purge the leadership of an entire community that made you president? If Koome is dismissed and I call for protests, will you come out? We are not going to sit back as Ruto destroys the leadership of Mount Kenya,” he added.

Woman Who Killed Lover In Airbnb and Disguised It as Mob Justice Charged

A woman accused of killing her lover in an Airbnb three years ago and reporting the incident as mob justice was arraigned in court on Thursday to face murder charges.

Cecilia Wangari Karisa, however, did not enter a plea as she had not undergone a mental assessment test, a mandatory requirement for all murder suspects before taking a plea.

According to the charge sheet, Wangari allegedly murdered Maxwel Wamwea on March 10, 2022, at Thome Estate within Kasarani Sub-County in Nairobi.

Wangari was scheduled to take a plea today, but the prosecution requested the court to defer the plea due to the pending mental assessment. The prosecution noted that Cecilia had not undergone the mental evaluation, a procedure adopted by Kenyan courts to determine a capital offender’s mental capability to stand trial.

She is suspected of colluding with another suspect, who is yet to be arrested, to murder the late Maxwel.

Initially, the case was reported to the Kasarani Police Station as a mob justice incident. However, according to the police, fresh investigations were initiated after a complaint letter was received on November 19, 2023, prompting the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to reopen the case.

After reviewing the file, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) recommended that Wangari, along with another suspect still at large, be charged with the murder of the deceased.

Wangari was apprehended at her hideout in an Airbnb in Thindigwa, Kiambu County.

The case will proceed on March 10, 2025.

  • Sudan’s Junta Praises Gulf States for Opposing RSF’s Parallel Government in Kenya

Sudan’s Junta Praises Gulf States for Opposing RSF’s Parallel Government in Kenya

Sudan’s ruling military junta has lauded Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Egypt, and Qatar for rejecting the recent establishment of a parallel government by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Nairobi.

In a statement, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs also acknowledged the support of African members of the UN Security Council—Algeria, Somalia, and Sierra Leone—along with Russia, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Guyana, and Türkiye.

The ministry accused Nairobi of adopting an “irresponsible stance” by supporting the RSF, which it labeled a “genocidal militia.”

“These clear positions affirm that the Kenyan presidency’s reckless decision to embrace the RSF and attempt to legitimize its unprecedented atrocities is isolated both externally and internally,” the statement read.

The diplomatic standoff follows the RSF’s February 23 agreement with 23 allied groups, including the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, to form a parallel government in RSF-controlled territories.

This move has heightened tensions between Kenya and Sudan’s military leadership under General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.

The Sudanese military which governs form Port Sudan has gone further to label Kenya a “rogue state,” accusing it of violating international norms by engaging with the RSF.

The Sudanese government has renewed its call for global condemnation of what it describes as a “grave threat to regional peace and security.”

It urged the international community, regional organizations, and particularly the African Union, to take a firm stance against actions undermining Sudan’s stability and violating international law.

On February 28, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry stated its opposition to any “illegitimate steps or measures taken outside the framework of Sudan’s official institutions that may affect its unity and do not reflect the will of its people, including the call to form a parallel government.”

Riyadh reaffirmed its commitment to Sudan’s security, stability, and territorial integrity, urging all parties to prioritize national interests over factional disputes to prevent division and chaos.

Qatar similarly expressed “full support for the unity, independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the sisterly Republic of Sudan.”

Doha rejected any “interference in Sudan’s internal affairs” and called on all factions to prioritize national unity and avoid fragmentation.

Kenya, however, has defended hosting the RSF meeting, describing it as a nonpartisan platform for dialogue and rejecting accusations of taking sides in the Sudanese conflict.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized Kenya’s commitment to facilitating peaceful resolutions to regional conflicts while accusing Sudan’s military of undermining democratic progress.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi emphasized Kenya’s dedication to regional peace and stability while dismissing claims of bias in hosting Sudanese civilian and RSF representatives.

He also noted that Sudanese groups have previously sought mediation in neighboring countries, arguing that Nairobi is merely providing a platform for dialogue, as other regional states have done in the past.

“We note that this is not the first-time groups in Sudan have sought solutions to their crisis by leveraging the good offices of neighboring countries,” Mudavadi stated.

“Indeed, in January 2024, parties and stakeholders to the Sudanese conflict met in a neighboring country to chart a way forward on inclusive dialogue and the return to civilian rule.”

Ruiru Church Vandalized as TikTok Group Accuses Pastor of Sodomy

Property of unknown value was destroyed when a group of youths claiming to be members of the ‘TikTok High Court’ stormed a church in Ruiru, accusing its leader Pastor Peter Barangu of sexual abuse.

The irate crowd claimed the pastor had been sexually abusing victims, with some cases allegedly dating back two years. Police were forced to disperse the mob using teargas.

One of the group’s leaders, Jackline Jaycee, alleged that she has evidence supporting the claims, stating that two survivors had come forward—one of whom had recorded a statement at Nakuru Central Police Station.

“Out of the two, one reported the case to Central Police in Nakuru. The officer in charge confirmed to us that the complaint was filed, but no action was taken. However, they are open to following it up,” she said.

Jackline added that the crowd was alerted to the situation through a live broadcast on ‘TikTok High Court’.

“We have over 30,000 followers, and they were all watching us live. That’s how people found out and rushed here in anger,” she explained.

Another member, Antony Mulai, stated that the group ensured they had credible evidence before taking action.

“Once this has happened there is no going back, so we had to make sure we had the receipts first, because this can destroy someone’s reputation…so we had to be sure first,” he said.

The pastor is accused of sedating his victims, most of whom are men, before sexually abusing them. While a complaint was reportedly filed at Nakuru Central Police Station, no official report has been made in Ruiru.

    The pastor’s whereabouts remain unknown.

‪More Kenyans Rescued From Myanmar Slave Camps‬

Sixty-four Kenyans are among more than 7,000 foreigners stranded at the Thai-Myanmar border after being rescued from scam compounds.

They remain in makeshift military camps in Myanmar’s Karen State, awaiting clearance to cross into Thailand for repatriation.

The Kenyan government said it has initiated talks with Thai authorities to reopen the border on humanitarian grounds, facilitating the safe return of its stranded citizens.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs confirmed that the Kenyans were rescued by two armed groups—the Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) and the Border Guard Force (BGF).

“The situation in the makeshift military camps in Karen State where the rescued nationals are being held, remains dire with lack of access to medical facilities, clean water, electricity and sanitation. The Ministry further informs that the Government is exploring other alternative routes to bring Kenyans home,” read the statement.

The Kenyan Ambassador to Thailand has been in daily contact with those stranded, while the government explores alternative routes for their safe return. Officials are engaging with Thai authorities to reopen the border on humanitarian grounds to allow the rescued individuals entry into Thailand for processing and repatriation.

A multi-agency team, led by the State Department for Diaspora Affairs, has already completed logistical plans for their return, pending border access approval.

A prime suspect in the murder of British national Campbell Scott was arrested in Mombasa town on Sunday, March 2.

The suspect is said to have been hiding in Mombasa since the murder of Campbell Scott on February 18.

He was flushed out of his hiding and brought to Nairobi where police planned to produce him in court for a miscellaneous application to detain him.

Investigators said that at least two accomplices are hiding either in Nairobi or Mombasa.

Homicide detectives handling the matter said they had a breakthrough in the probe following the suspect’s arrest.

They did not disclose the motive of the murder.

The team added that the taxi driver and the waiter arrested earlier on over the matter are innocent and would be used as witnesses.

Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin confirmed the arrest

“We have a prime suspect in the murder of Scott. The hunt for more suspects is ongoing. We hope to get more suspects involved in this callous murder,” he said.

The suspect was expected in court on Monday, March 3 at the Milimani Court for the application.

An autopsy on the body of Scott turned inconclusive.

Officials said soft tissue injuries found on Scott’s body are deemed too minor to kill him.

This forced the pathologists to pick samples for further tests.

The autopsy was conducted on the body of Scott at a mortuary in Makueni  last Thursday.

This threw investigators to the drawing board in their quest to establish the cause of the death.

The autopsy was conducted by Government Pathologist Dr. Richard Njoroge.

    His family was present.

The autopsy failed to reveal what caused his death, forcing them to pick samples for tests at the government chemist.

The police had earlier found injuries to suggest he was strangled or hit by a blunt object.

According to police, after disposing of his body in a forest in Makueni, the suspect proceeded to Mombasa, where they have been hiding.

Police also believe those who killed him were after his money.

They had held him for days in a house in Pipeline area in Nairobi before they killed him and transported the body to Makongo forest where it was discovered on February 22.

There are possibilities that the killers also accessed his bank accounts.

Scott went missing from his hotel in Nairobi on February 17 before his body was found in a forest days later.

Scott’s body was found on February 24, at the Makueni County Referral Hospital where it had been lying for two days.

  • Businesswoman Mary Wambui Implicated in Sh5 Billion Digital Super-Highway Scandal

Businesswoman Mary Wambui Implicated in Sh5 Billion Digital Super-Highway Scandal

A high-stakes scandal involving Kenya’s Sh5 billion Digital Super-Highway project has ensnared prominent businesswoman and former Communications Authority (CA) board chairperson Mary Wambui Mungai, casting a harsh spotlight on alleged state capture and conflicts of interest within President William Ruto’s administration.

At the heart of the controversy is Wambui’s company, Nightingale Enterprises Limited, which secured lucrative contracts to lay fibre optic cables under the government’s flagship digital connectivity initiative.

Investigations reveal that Wambui transferred her shares in Nightingale to her daughter, Evelyn Nyambura Mungai, shortly before the tender awards—a move critics decry as a bid to sidestep conflict-of-interest allegations during her tenure at the CA, which oversees the ICT sector.

    Systemic Favoritism and Legal Controversy

The Digital Super-Highway, touted as pivotal to Ruto’s “digital economy” vision, aims to expand Kenya’s fibre optic network by 100,000 kilometres.

However, procurement documents show Nightingale Enterprises—70% owned by Wambui’s daughter—was among three firms awarded contracts by the ICT Authority, a body under the same ministry as the CA.

A legal opinion by Solicitor General Shadrack Mose, mandating the CA to honor payments to Nightingale despite the ethical cloud, has intensified public outrage.

Stephen Mutoro, Secretary General of the Consumer Federation of Kenya (COFEK), condemned the move: “The rot is deep. This mirrors past scandals like the NYS looting, where influential individuals exploit state projects for personal gain.”

    Kenya Kwanza’s “Tenderpreneur” Web

    The scandal extends beyond Wambui.

Investigations have revealed a pattern of Kenya Kwanza allies and appointees clinching state contracts for instance:

Belgut MP Nelson Koech, chair of Parliament’s Defence Committee, saw his wife’s firm, Shovels N Trowels, awarded a Sh1.2 billion contract to repair sections of Mombasa Road damaged by the Nairobi Expressway.

Former KRA Chairman Anthony Mwaura’s company, Toddy Civil Engineering, bid unsuccessfully for the fibre optic tender but has a history of securing county government contracts.

While public procurement laws do not explicitly bar officials’ relatives from bidding, the practice fuels perceptions of insider influence.

Notably, President Ruto had vowed to dismantle such “tenderpreneur” networks but have yet to act on their pledge to probe state capture.

    Wambui’s Controversial Track Record

Nightingale Enterprises, incorporated in 2012, has repeatedly landed government deals under successive administrations:

    – In 2018, it controversially won a Parliamentary Service Commission tender to furnish Parliament Towers amid allegations of forged documents.

    – During COVID-19, Wambui’s Purma Holdings secured Sh120 million in KEMSA contracts for PPE and facemasks.

Wambui and her daughter were also implicated in a 2021 tax evasion case, later withdrawn amid claims of political witch-hunts during the Uhuru-Ruto feud.

Despite approving a Conflict of Interest Bill in February 2023, the Kenya Kwanza government faces mounting criticism for ignoring its anti-corruption rhetoric.

Transparency advocates warn that the Digital Super-Highway risks becoming another NYS-style scandal, eroding faith in Ruto’s governance. “This isn’t just about corruption—it’s about a systemic betrayal of the public’s hope for reform,” Mutoro asserted.

  • Kisumu Locals Push Raila to Widen Talks Before Ruto Pact

Kisumu Locals Push Raila to Widen Talks Before Ruto Pact

Kisumu residents have called on Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga to broaden his consultations as he prepares to join the broad-based government.

Speaking on Sunday, the locals expressed support for his engagement with Kenyans but urged him to also consult religious groups, civil society, and the youth.

Job Mandela emphasized that while they back Raila’s efforts, discussions should not be confined to ODM, as many Kenyans support the process.

“Raila is consulting on our behalf, and we are fully behind him,” he said, adding that he should resist intimidation or coercion and focus on strengthening ties with the Kenya Kwanza administration.

“Let no politician, especially within ODM, derail this process. We want it concluded quickly so that we get into government,” he added.

Joe Obuya cautioned Raila against falling for political traps ahead of the 2027 General Election, warning that the same politicians urging him to abandon talks with President William Ruto had misled him before.

“We want to assure Raila that the 6 million-plus who voted for him in 2022 support him in negotiating on our behalf,” he said, stressing that the government must prioritize service delivery.

He pointed to Raila’s past collaboration with former President Mwai Kibaki, which led to tangible benefits for Kenyans, and urged a similar outcome in his engagement with Ruto.

Lilian Onyango, a businesswoman in Kisumu, expressed anticipation for the formalization of the agreement, citing hopes for peace and stability.

“We want unity and an end to demonstrations that lead to destruction and loss of lives. I support Baba working with Ruto for the sake of the country,” she said.

Raila Calls for Unity and Full Implementation of the Constitution

Speaking during the burial of Baringo Senator William Cheptumo on Saturday, President Ruto urged leaders to set aside political interests and prioritize national unity.

Since losing the African Union Commission chairmanship bid, Raila has been consulting within his ODM party and in his Nyanza stronghold, engaging grassroots leaders, elders, and county officials. He has called for patriotism and urged Kenyans to abandon political suspicion.

“We must ensure that our constitution, which is rated among the best in the world, is fully implemented,” he said. “Once this is done, bad governance and corruption will be relegated to the museum.”

Raila also emphasized the need for equitable resource distribution and a stronger parliamentary role in governance.

    Ruto Pushes for Opposition Collaboration

President Ruto has hinted at upcoming political realignments, pushing for a collaboration agreement with opposition parties, starting with ODM.

“We need to be patriotic about Kenya. We can disagree, but we must never disagree on the destiny of Kenya,” he said.

Ruto dismissed leaders opposing his unity efforts, even as figures in the opposition—led by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua—begin forming alliances to challenge his leadership in 2027.

“It doesn’t matter who you are or what you believe in. We share a country and a destiny. If Kenya succeeds, we all succeed. If Kenya fails, none of us succeeds,” Ruto said.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and Senate Speaker Amason Kingi echoed Ruto’s sentiments, urging both Raila and Ruto’s supporters to embrace their unity.

“Raila and Ruto were the main contenders in 2022. If they are now working together to unite the country, why should their supporters be angry?” Wetang’ula asked.

He further warned against political hostility, quoting historian Ali Mazrui: “When elephants fight, the grass suffers. But when elephants make love, the grass suffers even more.”

  • Raila Outlines His Conditions for Collaborating with Ruto

Raila Outlines His Conditions for Collaborating with Ruto

Former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga is now calling for the compensation of victims of the 2023 Azimio anti-government protests as well as those of Gen Z demos last year.

Speaking in Mombasa, Raila said the compensation must be given to those who got injured in the two protests.

To those who lost their lives, the former PM said that their families should be compensated.

According to Raila, this is just one of the conditions they have put in place for negotiations with the government.

He, however, noted that while the compensation is a condition, what is important is to ensure such acts do not happen again in the country.

This loosely translates to, “The youths who were injured and the parents of those who were killed in 2023 during the Azimio protests and last year’s Gen Z protests should be compensated or their families compensated. That is a condition we have agreed upon. The most important thing is that such acts should not continue in our country.”

During his remarks, Raila stated that in his consultations, various issues that need fixing have come up.

He said these include ethnic discrimination, especially when Kenyans are looking for jobs, corruption, weakening devolution, especially in health, education matters and the arbitrary arrests and enforced disappearances.

He insisted that these are just some of the many issues Kenyans want to see improved.

The meeting was held at the Elimu na Mazingira Building in Mombasa ahead of a crucial consultative meeting with the ODM Mombasa branch leadership.

According to Mombasa Governor and ODM deputy party leader Abdulswamad Nassir, their discussions focused on strengthening party structures, enhancing grassroots mobilization, and aligning the vision for a more prosperous and equitable future for all.

“As we continue to advance the ideals of justice, inclusivity, and development, this engagement reaffirms our commitment to unity and progress within the ODM family and for the people of Mombasa,” he said.

  • Nairobi County Executive Geoffrey Mosiria Allegedly Fakes Hospitalization to Dodge DCI Probe Amid KPLC Waste Dumping Scandal

Nairobi County Executive Geoffrey Mosiria Allegedly Fakes Hospitalization to Dodge DCI Probe Amid KPLC Waste Dumping Scandal

Geoffrey Mosiria, Nairobi County’s camera-loving Chief Officer for Environment, has reportedly gone into hiding after allegedly faking a hospitalization to evade a criminal investigation linked to the controversial waste dumping at Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) offices earlier this week.

Sources close to the matter tell Kenya Insights that Mosiria, abandoned by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja amid mounting pressure, staged a medical emergency to avoid interrogation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The saga began on Monday when Nairobi County officials, under Mosiria’s direct instructions, dumped piles of garbage outside Stima Plaza, KPLC’s headquarters, in a dramatic retaliation to a power disconnection at City Hall over an unpaid KSh 3 billion electricity bill.

The situation escalated further as county askaris disconnected sewerage lines, causing an explosion of waste that drew widespread outrage.

The incident, captured in viral footage, sparked a public relations nightmare for the county government and prompted swift intervention from the national level.

On Friday, February 28, Mosiria announced via social media that he had been admitted to Nairobi Hospital with a stomach upset, a claim that raised eyebrows given the timing.

Insiders now allege this was a ruse to sidestep a looming DCI summons as the waste-dumping fiasco spiraled into a criminal investigation. “He knew the heat was on, and Sakaja wasn’t going to back him up,” a source familiar with the situation told this publication. “The hospitalization was a convenient escape hatch.”

Governor Sakaja, summoned to State House on Friday by President William Ruto, faced intense scrutiny over the incident. Ruto, addressing congregants at a church service in Roysambu on Sunday, March 2, revealed he had personally intervened, calling both Sakaja and KPLC management to resolve the feud.

The President tasked Head of Public Service Felix Koskei with ending the standoff, a directive that led to a truce announced by Sakaja on Wednesday.

However, in distancing himself from the debacle, Sakaja claimed he had not directly ordered the waste dumping, effectively leaving Mosiria to bear the brunt of the fallout. “I didn’t tell the askaris to dump garbage,” Sakaja insisted during a press briefing at City Hall, pointing the finger squarely at his environment chief.

Mosiria, known for his high-profile, live-streamed raids on city establishments over noise complaints and sanitation violations, has been conspicuously absent from the public eye since the scandal broke.

His penchant for the spotlight—often seen documenting his enforcement actions on social media—stands in stark contrast to his current silence. “This is a man who thrives on attention,” remarked a Nairobi resident. “For him to vanish like this, something’s seriously off.”

The waste-dumping incident has not only strained relations between Nairobi County and KPLC but also drawn legal action.

On Wednesday, KPLC and its affiliated trading partners took the county to court over the stunt, with a hearing scheduled for later that day.

The court directed parties to await the outcome of negotiations led by Koskei, Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, and Sakaja, but Mosiria’s absence has fueled speculation that he’s become the scapegoat in a messy political chess game.

Critics argue that Mosiria’s bold move at Stima Plaza may have been a miscalculation, flying too close to the sun in a bid to assert county authority.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko weighed in, slamming the approach as reckless: “Dumping waste doesn’t punish KPLC alone—it exposes residents to health risks like cholera.” Sonko urged Sakaja to pursue diplomatic solutions rather than theatrical retaliation, a critique that now hangs over Mosiria’s head.

As of Sunday, March 2, Mosiria remains out of sight, with no official statement from his office or Nairobi Hospital confirming his alleged condition.

The DCI has yet to comment on whether they are actively pursuing him, but the pressure is mounting. President Ruto, in his Sunday address, praised Sakaja’s apology as a sign of courageous leadership, a nod that pointedly excluded Mosiria, further isolating the embattled executive.

With a criminal investigation looming and his governor seemingly cutting ties, Mosiria’s next move remains uncertain.

Has the self-styled enforcer of Nairobi’s environmental laws finally met his match, or will he emerge from the shadows to face the music? For now, the city watches as this saga unfolds, one pile of garbage at a time.

  • Ruto Donates Sh120M to Roysambu Preacher, Hands Over KDF Land, and Criticizes Catholics

Ruto Donates Sh120M to Roysambu Preacher, Hands Over KDF Land, and Criticizes Catholics

The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) have ceded a 20-acre parcel of land in Nairobi’s Roysambu to a flamboyant city preacher on the intervention of President William Ruto.

President Ruto confirmed the controversial decision on Sunday during a chruch service at the Jesus Winner Ministry where he was hosted by Bishop Edward Mwai, a close ally that he flaunted GSU protection in public appearances.

KDF had numerously contested a transaction involving the said parcel by Uchumi Supermarket, a public listed supermarket chain that collapsed over debt.

“In your prayers to me, you fronted the land contestation issue, and you told me you wanted it resolved. Because you prayed for me to become the Chief of the Armed Forces, and God gave me that power, I gave orders to the Ministry of Lands to do their mandate,” Ruto announced.

“Since I am the Commander-in-Chief, I told KDF that this land is a holy place, and the church will be built there. I will personally join hands with you to make it happen,” he said while pledging a Sh120 million donation.

He also took a swipe at unnamed clerics over their criticism of the government urging them to “learn” from Bishop Mwai.

Ruto’s remarks come amid increasing criticism from prominent clergy, particularly from the Catholic Church and the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK), over his handling of the economy, governance, and corruption.

The Catholic bishops, led by Archbishop Anthony Muheria, have been at the forefront of questioning Ruto’s policies, including high taxation, the cost of living, and governance failures.

The rift escalated when the Catholic Diocese of Nairobi ordered a refund of President Ruto’s donation to a parish in Nairobi’s Soweto in November 2024.

    Sh120mn pledge

However, on Sunday, Ruto was full of praise for Bishop Mwai, commending him for working with the government instead of criticizing it.

“I wish the other bishops of other churches would have conducted themselves like Bishop Mwai. Instead of pointing accusing fingers, we all can contribute to finding solutions to the issues facing the youth and the country,” Ruto stated.

The President lauded Jesus Winner Ministry’s role in youth employment, specifically mentioning its contribution to his labor export program, which aims to send skilled Kenyan youth abroad for work opportunities.

“I want to congratulate in a very special way Bishop Mwai and the leadership of Jesus Winner Ministry for taking responsibility for the youth and preparing them for export labor employment opportunities,” he said.

Ruto revealed that Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua would visit the church on Wednesday to list youths at the church in the Kazi Majuu labor export initiative.

“How I wish other people and other churches could do what Jesus Winner Ministry is doing—being part of the solution instead of worsening problems,” he added.

Ruto committed to donating Sh20 million immediately and raising an additional Sh100 million through a fundraising drive.

“I will donate Sh20 million first, and we will plan a harambee with my friends to raise Sh100 million in support. This church will be built so that we embarrass the enemy of this country,” Ruto declared, without elaborating on who he was referring to as “the enemy.”

    Church-State Divide

The President dismissed critics questioning his frequent donations to churches, insisting that his contributions are acts of faith rather than political patronage.

“I have been criticized for giving donations to churches, but when we give to churches, we don’t give to humans, bishops, or congregations—we give to God [and] I have searched the Bible, and nowhere does it say that when you give to God, the bishops return the money. I am a product of giving to God, and I am unapologetic about it,” he declared.

Ruto’s remarks on Sunday underline a growing division between his administration and sections of the church, with some clergy accusing him of weaponizing religion for political gain while selectively rewarding those who align with his government.

In recent months, several prominent Kenyan bishops have taken a firm stand against political donations, rejecting financial contributions from politicians, particularly those in President Ruto’s administration.

Catholic Archbishop Anthony Muheria has been vocal in urging the clergy to decline questionable donations, emphasizing that the church should not be used as a platform for political endorsements.

The Anglican Church has also distanced itself from financial contributions tied to political figures, with Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit previously stating that churches should not be turned into “campaign podiums” through monetary gifts aimed at securing political favor.

His decision to award contested military land to a pro-government church leader raises questions about state favoritism, given that other religious leaders critical of his administration have faced backlash rather than presidential endorsements.

  • ‘You Have Full Backing’ of UK, British Premier Tells Ukrainian President

‘You Have Full Backing’ of UK, British Premier Tells Ukrainian President

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday reiterated his country’s support for Ukraine during talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in London.

The Ukrainian president arrived in London earlier Saturday for talks with Starmer and to attend a summit on Ukraine to be hosted by the British premier on Sunday. The summit will be attended by many European leaders.

“You have the full backing across the United Kingdom, and we stand with you and Ukraine for as long as it may take,” Starmer told Zelenskyy, referring to cheering crowds gathered outside Downing Street.

He said that the UK has an “absolute” and “unwavering” determination to achieve what they both want to achieve, “which is… a lasting peace for Ukraine based on sovereignty and security.”

The Ukrainian president thanked Starmer and the British people for their support for his country since the beginning of the war in 2022.

A statement by the Prime Minister’s Office following the meeting noted that Starmer reiterated his “unwavering support” for Ukraine.

“The prime minister re-stated his determination to finding a path that ends Russia’s illegal war and ensures a just and lasting peace that secures Ukraine’s future sovereignty and security,” a Downing Street spokesperson said in the statement.

It added that the pair looked forward to continuing discussions at the leaders’ summit in London on Sunday.

Zelenskyy will also meet King Charles III on Sunday.

The meeting came one day after a heated exchange between Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance at the Oval Office.

During the exchange, Trump criticized the Ukrainian leader’s attitude, while Zelenskyy expressed his expectation of support for his country.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan will also attend Sunday’s summit on Ukraine on behalf of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
