Somalia based al-Shabaab militants on early Sunday morning raided a construction site in Kenya’s northern county of Mandera and burnt down construction equipment valued at about Sh38 million.
The destroyed equipment include an excavator, flat roller machine, shift foot roller and a pressure pump.
Two guards manning the site at the Mandera-Arabia-Lafey road managed to escape and no one was reported injured.
Outgoing North Eastern Regional Commissioner Mohamed Birik said they are investigating the incident. The al-Shabaab militants have in the recent past intensified attacks along the Somalia-Kenya border targeting civilians and government installations.
In December, al-Shabaab fighters attacked a bus heading to Mandera and killed eight police reservists who are not natives of the region, an incident that has seen eight suspects arrested for their alleged involvement in facilitating the attack on the reservists.
